After all, there's a reason they've been infamously dubbed "floating Petri dishes."<br /><br />Not all floating resorts are created — or operated — equally.<br /><br />The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention randomly conducts sanitary inspections on cruise ships throughout the year. So far in 2024, 20 vessels have received perfect scores.<br /><br />At the same time, the public health agency has reported 10 bacterial and viral outbreaks — mostly norovirus — on ships since the start of the year.<br /><br />Half have been on ships from <keyword id="20102018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Royal-Caribbean" source="keywords">Royal Caribbean</keyword> Group's main cruise line and its Celebrity Cruises subsidiary. These often-packed floating hotels create the ideal environment for the highly contagious bug to spread fast, typically through contaminated water, food, surfaces, and people.<br /><br />Just as quickly, it can ruin your vacation — the four predominant symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain.<br /><br />To help mitigate these incidents, the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program regularly inspects cruise liners and scores them from zero to 100.<br /><br />    <div type="image" title="16 Cruise liner MSC Meraviglia is berthed at a dock in Punta Langosta in Cozumel" height="1333" width="1777" msid="114117473" hostid="261"></div><br />The review — which includes checking common spaces such as kitchens, pools, and children's activity centers — is random and unannounced.<br /><br />As expected, vermin and improperly stored foods are a big no-no. But inspectors are also closely watching behind the scenes for smaller, more-nuanced details such as how frequently the hair and lint strainer in the swimming pool is disinfected or the water temperature of the dish washer.<br /><br />So far, in 2024, the CDC has performed 119 inspections. Nvidia partnered with <keyword id="23472419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Perfect-World-Games" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Perfect World Games" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Perfect World Games">Perfect World Games</keyword> for this demo and it caught almost every participant’s attention at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/nvidia-hosts-geforce-rtx-ai-pcs-showcase-in-bengaluru-top-ai-tools-to-look-forward-to/articleshow/113741061.cms">NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX AI PC event</a> in Bengaluru last month.<br /><br />Clad in royal attire, the princess looked at me straight while answering my questions. I was also told that the AI-powered character has some context and is aware that I am from “another world”. Intriguing, huh!?!<br /><br />After (a rather awkward) introduction, I asked what Yun Ni was doing and she responded, “I am resting after a ritual, seeking information to help my tribe.” <br /><br />The unique thing about Yun Ni, that made her different from anything I had ever seen before, was how her facial expressions kept changing as the conversation flowed. The NPC character also exuded confidence and a tinge of attitude, befitting a princess. To further test her reactions, I decided to steer the conversation a bit off-topic.<br /><br />“I have that information,” I said, referring to what could help her tribe. <br /><br />And the moment I said that, her expression changed and she seemed more curious.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="de8f4c66-925b-44c7-b042-8ba7a07f68ef." height="900" width="1200" msid="114041047" hostid="261"></div> <br /><br />“What do you know,” she asked while flinging her arms in the air like we, as humans do at times.<br /><br />“I am not gonna tell you,” I responded. <br /><br />To my surprise, she replied, “Suit yourself. I am not here to beg.” <br /><br />This was the time when I felt I was in the middle of a Black Mirror episode, talking to an AI character who was actually responding to my questions with a personality of their own. But hold on, it doesn’t stop here.<br /><br /><h2>Spooky, yet intriguing—glimpse into the future of gaming</h2><br />From Black Mirror to Her, we’ve all seen countless fictitious tales that explore the fascinating, yet unsettling, dynamics of human-AI relationships. In these narratives, conversations with AI often begin as innocent and intriguing interactions, offering a glimpse into the potential of seamless, personalised communication. However, it doesn't take long before these dialogues take a darker turn. <br /><br />But that need not be the case! Interacting with an AI-powered NPC can also enhance the gaming experience and stimulate and challenge us even further. Here's how my conversation with the princess continued:<br /><br />“But if you do (beg) it might help your people,” I prodded.<br /><br />She responded with the same air of attitude and said, “I have my ways, begging isn’t one of them.” <br /><br />I then told the princess that I would help her on one condition—if she told me a secret. I had expected she would come up with some repetitive response or something that would sound robotic but that was not the case.<br /><br />The princess then displayed one of the most human traits ever—trust issues. <br /><br />“I don’t trade secrets with strangers,” she said. When I reiterated that doing so might help her people, she replied, “I don’t trust easily, you need to prove your worth.” <br /><br />I then said that I knew someone who had the information and lived in her world. <br /><br />“Interesting, who is this one,” she asked and I said, “That’s a secret I am not going to share.”<br /><br />“Then we have nothing more to discuss,” the princess replied.<br /><br />Trying to see if she is aware of the anger emotion, I asked, “Are you angry?” <br /><br />To this, the princess said, “No, just tired of pointless games.” (Burn). <br /><br />The demo isn’t out for the public yet but gives a glimpse of what the future of gaming could hold.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="ac486817-8da0-43de-b509-c8d1080cd004." height="900" width="1200" msid="114041083" hostid="261"></div><br /><br />Nvidia had also talked about this demo in a blog post last month. The post read, “Global game publisher and developer Perfect World Games is advancing its NVIDIA ACE and digital human technology demo, Legends, with new AI-powered vision capabilities. Within the demo, the character Yun Ni can see gamers and identify people and objects in the real world using the computer’s camera powered by ChatGPT-4o, adding an <keyword id="19900656" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="augmented-reality" source="keywords">augmented reality</keyword> layer to the gameplay experience.”<br /><br /><h2>Scope for AI-powered NPCs in gaming</h2><br />NPCs (non-player characters) have been a part of the gaming world for as long as we can remember. Be it the retro games like Mario or the more recent ones like GTA V, NPCs have been a part of almost every title. <br /><br />However, these characters are often programmed to give certain fixed responses and behave in a fixed way. For instance, in all of the GTA games, you will often hear pedestrians say a certain set of dialogues when you walk past them. <br /><br />Thus, actions and words of NPCs are often quite predictable. However, with what I saw during Nvidia’s demo, things might change in the near future.<br /><br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113902265" title="Nvidia’s ChatRTX could be your alternative to ChatGPT for reading long documents, and it doesn’t need an internet connection" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br />For instance, imagine a GTA game with such AI-powered NPCs. Rumours about GTA VI are already doing rounds and some had even said that NPCs this time would be more intelligent and have lives of their own. But if those NPCs could get these <keyword id="19896272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generative-AI" source="keywords">generative AI</keyword> powers and could give responses like these, the whole experience would change. Many of us would spend hours just talking to the various NPCs in the world. <br /><br />Similarly, think of how a friendly NPC could serve as an in-game guide for new players. If you get stuck somewhere, all you need to do is call up your NPC buddy and ask for what can be done next. <br /><br />The possibilities are endless. And once more developers are on board, we could be looking at some amazing things.<br />

It also offers clearly marked entrances to subway stations and alternate route options available on the map.</p><p>Other updates include the ability for trailer drivers with Google built-in to their vehicles to add their dimensions to tailor their route to avoid low bridges and tunnels. Google Maps also added an update for EVs that allows drivers to plan trips on the phone and send routes with charging stops to their vehicle's Google app. If drivers don't know their exact charging type, they can add their vehicle's model and it will show compatible stations.</p><p>The new Google Maps updates come just a couple of weeks after the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-maps-ai-features-reviews-waze-update-gemini-2024-10">platform got an AI overhaul with integrated Gemini features</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Dude Perfect is planning a new studio facility in Texas for YouTube and other creators, BI revealed.</li><li>Dude Perfect, with 60M YouTube subscribers, is expanding its media empire in Frisco.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtubers-dude-perfect-hired-ceo-andrew-yaffe-explains-his-strategy-2024-10">Dude Perfect</a> is adding to its Texas expansion with plans to build a production facility for its flagship YouTube channel and other creators and brands.</p><p>Started in 2009, Dude Perfect is made up of five guys — Garrett Hilbert, Tyler Toney, Cody Jones, Coby Cotton, and Cory Cotton — known for their viral, family-friendly content featuring sports tricks. Based in Frisco, Texas, it's grown into a sprawling enterprise with more than 60 million YouTube subscribers plus a best-selling book, merchandise sold in Walmart, a tour, and a connected TV app.</p><p>It just hired its first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtubers-dude-perfect-hired-ceo-andrew-yaffe-explains-his-strategy-2024-10">CEO, Andrew Yaffe,</a> to try to grow the company into a full-fledged media empire. Earlier this year, it landed a $100 million-plus investment from Highmount Capital, estimating revenue this year would be over $50 million. It's now opening an 80,000-square-foot entertainment destination headquartered in Frisco with features like a Dude Perfect museum, mini-golf course, and restaurants. The 25-person company is hiring, with plans to potentially double in the next 12 to 18 months.</p><div type="image" title="Andrew Yaffe" height="3891" width="3917" msid="114785579" hostid="261" sizebytes="879260"></div><p>Dude Perfect hasn't previously shared its production studio plans. The company describes it as customizable and adaptable for different types of content and plans to use it to film its own shows like "Overtime," a variety series, and high-production videos like a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4gNS0Iiu0Q">recent one with fellow YouTuber Mark Rober.</a> It also intends for the studio, which is scheduled to open in 2025 and will be tricked out with Samsung tech, to be available to brands, creators, and production companies seeking to film in the Dallas area.</p><p>"Dude Perfect started in a backyard 15 years ago and has evolved from there," Yaffe said. "What we're going to be opening is on a totally different level. Whether it's creating something in a physical production space or in any professional sports setting, we'll be able to do it on-site."</p><p>"We've never seen this much energy and interest in DFW. Between major companies, entertainers, and athletes, DFW as a market, and our new headquarters specifically, will be a creative hub," Coby Cotton said. "By giving ourselves and others world-class facilities, we can continue to build Dallas as a critical home for media and entertainment."</p><p>While Los Angeles remains the dominant entertainment hub for traditional filmed entertainment and the creator economy, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-losing-dominance-tv-movies-employment-chart-2024-10">it's lost ground in recent years</a> to markets like Dallas, Atlanta, and Chicago. Dallas captured 2% of traditional US film and TV jobs in 2023, making it one of the third biggest film markets after LA and New York, with 27% and 12% of jobs, respectively, according to a May Otis College <a target="_blank" href="https://www.otis.edu/about/initiatives/documents/otis-college-report-creative-economy-may-2024.pdf">report</a> on the creative economy. Texas' 17-year-old film incentive program has made the state a draw for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/10/09/texas-film-incentive-program-senators/">productions like</a> "Yellowstone" and "Friday Night Lights."</p><p>On the sports and creator front, it's also the home of several major sports teams; Jake Paul and Mike Tyson's highly anticipated Netflix fight will take place in Arlington, Texas on November 15.</p><p>Big YouTubers like Dude Perfect are increasingly blurring the lines between social media video and traditional filmed entertainment as YouTube captures more of viewers' screen time. Amazon just announced a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/amazon-invests-creator-economy-firm-spotter-deal-content-merchandise-1236048268/">deal</a> with creator-focused firm Spotter to give its clients (which include Dude Perfect) opportunities to monetize their content on the e-commerce giant.</p><p>With big companies, teams, and talent located in Texas, does Dude Perfect need LA? "We certainly don't think so," Yaffe said. "We've been Texas-based for 16 years, and we'll be here as far in the future as we can see. There's no shortage of opportunity for us here."</p>

I whisked these ingredients together while a tablespoon of butter melted in the slow cooker. Why this week's Hunter's Moon is the ultimate backdrop for the perfect moonlit date night

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Marija Riba and her husband quit their jobs and moved from London to Finland.</li><li>Riba experienced burnout from her demanding crypto job and is still recovering months later.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with </em><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mvriba.com/"><em>Marija Riba</em></a><em>, a 33-year-old who recently moved from London to Finland. It's been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I spoke with friends who've taken a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-six-figure-job-solo-travel-career-break-no-regret-2024-10">career break</a> to recover from burnout, and they all told me they were able to relax, recover, and successfully reenter the workforce. When I started my break, I expected the same thing.</p><p>In July, my husband and I quit our jobs and moved from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-finland-happiest-place-never-visited-2023-12">London to Finland</a>. I thought I'd rest for a month and feel fully recovered, but my burnout is more serious and deeply embedded than I ever imagined. I'm so anxious about the prospect of failure and relying on family for financial support, that I haven't allowed myself to fully rest and stop working.</p><h2 id="0492c55e-a884-4a4c-a357-3b92939dfdd5">I burned out at my crypto job</h2><p>There's a joke that a couple of months in crypto is like several years in another industry. After burning out from the intensity and fast-paced nature of my crypto job earlier this year, I think that's true.</p><p>I'd been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sc/web3-helps-businesses-keep-customers-engaged-and-loyal">working in web3</a> for four years before joining a blockchain art verification platform as their head of product in June of 2023. I was fascinated by the industry and honestly loved my company and team, but<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burnout-work-boss-left-office-on-stretcher-2024-4"> I slowly burned out</a>.</p><p>I had to remain on call at odd hours for our American clients and often worked on weekends. It never felt like I could truly "turn off." I felt undervalued by management and put so much pressure on myself to perform well, and I couldn't take it anymore.</p><p>In May, I suddenly started experiencing extreme shoulder pain that hadn't bothered me in 10 years, and it hit me: if my health was likely only going to decline, what was I doing in a place where I wasn't fully happy?</p><h2 id="ee969016-80c7-42b3-a06c-3a1e6872355d">My husband and I both quit our jobs and moved from London to Finland</h2><p>I floated the idea of taking a solo <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-finland-happiest-place-on-earth-what-its-like-2024-1">holiday in Finland</a>, where my mother lives, but when my husband expressed his own dissatisfaction with his current design management job, we made a joint decision to quit our jobs.</p><p>My husband handed in his month's notice before me because I was so nervous. I've always been such a responsible person, so quitting felt like a failure, but I finally bit the bullet and quit.</p><p>We finished our final month in July, and the next week we packed our belongings and drove to Finland to move in with my mother and stepfather. We figured it'd be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-finland-90-days-stayed-love-it-2024-8">safe space to reset</a> and recover while also helping them with their declining health.</p><h2 id="7fca4c01-795c-493b-bd49-d01a3e6f4210">Moving in with my parents was sometimes emotional</h2><p>I hadn't<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-back-with-parents-as-adult-perks-outweigh-my-embarrassment-2024-9"> lived with my mother</a> since I was 17, so moving in with them was a bit bizarre. My husband and I cooked, cleaned, and helped out any way we could, but I found myself falling into the parent-child dynamic and reverting to childish self-centredness.</p><p>Sometimes I'd get so caught up in my own emotions dealing with the ramifications of burnout that I'd question why I wasn't getting more emotional support from my mother, who was struggling with her own issues. It led to some communication issues, but we've been able to work through them.</p><p>At the same time, it was nice to spend more time with my parents. My husband and I are dipping into savings to take time off, and I'm grateful to say my parents are also helping to support us financially during this transition period.</p><p>In October, my husband and I moved into our own flat, for which my parents paid the deposit and the first month's rent. We don't know how long we'll stay, but Finland is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finnish-people-share-secret-to-happiness-finland-why-happiest-country-2020-2">perfect setting to focus on my health</a>.</p><p>Our city is very small, and everything is within about a five-minute walk, which is a joy I've never experienced before. I've been meditating, going to the gym, and finding peace in my alone time.</p><h2 id="4e927b06-58e8-44f2-9773-e3dd04476eec">My husband and I are coping differently</h2><p>I used to travel every weekend when I lived in London and loved it, so when I envisioned myself taking a career break, it involved <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-couple-gap-year-burn-out-quit-jobs-travel-world-2024-7">traveling the world</a>. Unfortunately, I'm not in a mental space to exert so much energy. In fact, all I want to do is just sit in one place.</p><p>Despite my lack of energy, I haven't been able to truly rest and stop working. I gave myself a week or two to acclimatize to Finland before immediately starting to apply for full-time jobs and creating my own website optimization business.</p><p>It's been interesting to see how my husband has been handling this period of change. He's been fixing everything in sight at my parents' home, and, more recently, working on our flat. I think it's his way of coping. He's also looking for a job, but I think he's able to do it less intensely than me.</p><h2 id="d37a3025-8c86-4f53-b0fe-dae5b710721a">I realize I'm not bound to any lifestyle</h2><p>I really don't know what's next for my husband and me, but I'm becoming more comfortable trusting my inner voice. This break has taught me more about myself and highlighted the parts of me that I want to work on, such as this discomfort with not having everything under full control.</p><p>I think part of the reason I ended up in such a serious place of burnout is because I ignored the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/20-warning-signs-that-youre-burnt-out-at-work-2015-7">warning signs</a>. I felt like I couldn't leave because I had a job, friends, and a mortgage to pay. It wasn't until I hit a breaking point that I finally made a change.</p><p>It's still emotional and overwhelming at times, and I'm struggling to come to terms with the fact that recovery takes time. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Gen Zs have found a more authentic resource when researching colleges: college content creators.</li><li>College content creators give study advice and post snippets of day-to-day school life on TikTok.</li></ul><p>In the summer before his senior year of high school, videos of students waking up in dorm rooms or wandering down the college quad started to flood Ryan Fuhrman's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-is-bad-boring-fyp-2024-2">TikTok For You feed</a>.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-tiktok-algorithm-for-you-page-works-watch-time-report-2021-7">algorithm</a> clearly knew that he should be researching college— and he took it as a cue to get started.</p><p>"Dorm room in NYU," he typed into the TikTok search bar. In a matter of seconds, he could <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tour-nyu-freshman-dorm-room-building-2023-9">tour the dorms</a> of New York University, checking out the bedding and wall art of each student who had chosen to share.</p><p>In a similar manner, he went on to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-food-best-dining-halls-2017-8">judge the food quality</a> at the University of California, Los Angeles's dining halls, and get a feel for what a day in the life of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-college-freshmen-successful-first-year-professor-2024-9">college freshman</a> might look like at the University of Southern California.</p><p>Unlike scrolling a school's website or browsing a brochure, TikTok allowed him to see colleges through other students' eyes.</p><p>"It made me believe, 'Wow, that actually could be my day,'" Fuhrman, 18, told Business Insider.</p><p>Fuhrman is not alone. According to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nearly-half-genz-use-tiktok-instagram-over-google-search-2022-7">Google's internal data</a>, nearly 40% of Gen Z prefers searching on TikTok and Instagram over Google Search and Maps, BI reported in July 2022.</p><p>When it comes to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-choose-college-campus-tour-data-2023-12">deciding on a school</a>, these TikToks illuminate parts of college life that previous generations had little access to and often didn't discover until their freshman year — after the decision of where to go had been made.</p><p>Instead of the typical campus tour hosted by one of the college's brand ambassadors and led along a curated map of the school's most attractive amenities, Gen Zers have multiple feeds through which they can examine a campus' vibe. And unlike the 15-minute promo videos produced by schools, much of what's featured on social media is coming from people they can relate to.</p><div type="image" title="Helaine Zhao standing outside of Harvard" height="1363" width="1817" msid="114753464" hostid="261" sizebytes="200338"></div><h2 id="c9b73a20-6e08-4a15-944b-3ebc651c868a">The rise of college content creators</h2><p>As of October 29, there were 2.3 million<em> </em>TikTok videos under the hashtag "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/College-life">college life</a>." The hashtag has gone viral, with 30.5 billion views.</p><p>The popularity of college content on TikTok has introduced a slew of content creators covering their school life.</p><p>From her very first day, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@helainezhao?lang=en">Helaine Zhao</a>, a Harvard freshman, started posting vlogs about life on campus.</p><p>In a video posted in September, she shared her morning routine at college.<strong> </strong>The video shows her getting out of bed, putting in her contact lenses, picking out clothes, applying make-up, exercising at a gym, and getting breakfast. The video gained over 6 million views.</p><p>Zhao, who started posting content in March, has gained over 92,300 followers on TikTok. And while she's eligible<strong> </strong>for TikTok's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-creator-rewards-program-challenges-google-search-youtube-2024-3">Creator Rewards Program</a>, which allows creators to monetize their content, she has not yet joined. Still, she occasionally signs paid collaborations<strong> </strong>with study brands like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/learning/notability-note-taking-app-ipad-apple-review">Notability</a>, a note-taking app. Zhao preferred not to share how much she earns from the sponsorships.</p><p>She recalls using the app to research colleges when she was deciding between Stanford, Harvard, and Yale.</p><p>"It was definitely a very helpful tool to get to experience these campuses without actually going to them in person," she said, although she eventually did visit the schools in person during their admitted student days.</p><p>One college content creator she followed at the time was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@elisempham?lang=en">Elise Pham</a>. Now in her junior year at Harvard, Pham has more than 155,800 followers.</p><div type="image" title="A girl poses at Harvard" height="1000" width="1500" msid="114753468" hostid="261" sizebytes="54994"></div><p>"As the child of a single immigrant father and a mother who passed away when I was 9 years old, I didn't necessarily have a lot of resources and mentorship regarding the college application process," Pham, 20, told BI.</p><p>She saw the value of providing resources for students who need college advice. So, when she started college, she began posting college admissions videos on TikTok<strong> </strong>about Harvard to help prospective students.</p><p>She then founded the Ultimate Ivy League Guide, a college admissions consulting business that provides students with online guides and courses on college admissions. She's running the business while finishing her last two years of undergrad, and plans to continue working there full-time after graduating.</p><p>Pham told BI that while she doesn't take personal income from the business, it earns a low<strong> </strong>six-figure amount a month. "The money is used to build a program that can make education more accessible for students from all socioeconomic and geographical backgrounds," she said. Pham provided BI with documentation of her business earnings.</p><p>Similarly, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@lillianzhang_?lang=en">Lillian Zhang</a>, a University of California Berkeley graduate, started posting content about her college life and internships during her junior year. It was during the thick of Covid, and she decided to cure her boredom by providing useful content for students.</p><p>As it happened, some of her UC Berkeley vlogs went viral. In one vlog, which gained over 200,000 views, she wakes up early to go to the gym, has a mid-term review at school, then grabs a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stanford-student-internship-matcha-tea-farm-japan-what-she-learned-2024-10">matcha</a> latte and quesadilla for lunch.</p><p>"I think people just want to see what life at the school was through my experience," said Zhang, 24, who has more than 113,100 followers on TikTok.</p><div type="image" title="Lillian Zhang, a UC Berkeley alumni, speaking to students" height="3012" width="4016" msid="114753467" hostid="261" sizebytes="177026"></div><p>She added that prospective students had reached out to her to ask questions about school and internships.</p><p>"When I was still at Berkeley, there were people who recognized me from the videos. That was a really cool experience hearing how the information that I've shared has helped," she said.</p><p>These days, Zhang works as a product marketing manager at a Big Tech company and posts mostly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-worst-career-advice-on-tiktok-2024-8">career and financial advice.</a></p><p>In her first year of receiving income as a content creator, Zhang made around $47,000, mostly from sponsorships. This year, her revenue from content creation amounted to a low six-figure number. Zhang provided BI with documentation of her social media income.</p><h2 id="9db52995-a72c-4c11-8da5-4ec1c508d2f5">An authentic first-person perspective</h2><p>TikTok can be a useful tool for students to gain extra <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-american-students-avoid-debt-studying-abroad-college-europe-2024-10">insight into colleges</a> they are interested in.</p><p>Lucie Vágnerová, the cofounder of the higher education consulting firm BKT Education in Brooklyn, advises her students to use social media during their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-1-in-4-americans-think-going-college-worth-it-2024-5">college research</a>.</p><p>"You might see a snippet from the cafeteria, people kicking a soccer ball around the quad, or even whether it's stressful to study in the library," she told BI. "Just real-life stuff that a college website won't necessarily tell you."</p><p>Students can get a "vibe check" to see if they can relate to other students and appreciate the school culture, she added.</p><p>At the same time, college content can also change how prospective students view a college for the worst, Greg Kaplan, a college advisor, said.</p><p>"We have seen students change their school lists based on what they observe about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-10-party-universities-in-america-ranked-2024-9">fraternities and sororities</a> and not apply to those schools if they don't think they will fit in," said Kaplan, whose company, Kaplan Educational Group, provides college application guidance to around 350 high school students yearly.</p><h2 id="47905484-234c-45bb-be67-7bb333c7f6e0">TikTok is useful — but it has limitations</h2><p>Vágnerová said<strong> </strong>prospective students should use TikTok with a discerning eye.</p><p>"As much as I love to see what's happening with social media creators coming out of campuses, I always tell students, 'This is one piece of the puzzle; don't linger anywhere too long,'" she said.</p><p>"Look for other social media creators. Look for location tags on Instagram stories. Get a comprehensive picture of a campus or an academic culture rather than just looking at it through the prism of one person," she added.</p><p>And while TikTok can influence students' perceptions of a school, other factors that students consider before making their decision typically include cost, rankings, and location.</p><div type="image" title="A college student posing with his UCSD hoodie." height="1092" width="1456" msid="114753466" hostid="261" sizebytes="142156"></div><p>Of the 17 schools he applied to, Fuhrman said the schools he was accepted to included NYU, USC, and California State University. When it came down to his decision, he decided on the University of California, San Diego, because of its reputation, rankings, and cost. Fuhrman, who grew up in San Jose, also toured several schools in person.</p><p>Still, he says it was TikTok videos that gave him confidence in his decision.</p><p>On the app, he has a collection of saved videos titled "UCSD." One video shows the beaches of La Jolla: "That kind of made me fall in love with the school," he said. Another video he saved<strong> </strong>shows the modern interior of Franklin Antonio Hall — an engineering facility with an auditorium, 100-seat classrooms, and collaborative study space for students. The building opened on campus in 2022. </p><p>"I would never have known because every single promotional content for the school just shows a picture of the library," he said.</p><p>"But the school is so much more than that."</p><p>In between studying for a degree in structural engineering, Fuhrman, who has around <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ryan.furball">3,400 followers</a>, has also joined in on documenting his college life on TikTok.</p><p>"I think that inspiring others like me who didn't really have the school on their radar is my goal, ultimately," he said.</p>

Harry said on Tuesday's episode of "Boyfriend Material" that he and Jess spent another week together in Mexico after filming to work on their relationship.</p><p>He also said they went on a holiday to Cancún too.</p><p>"Jess didn't need to do that. It just shows you her character like she really leads with her heart.
