"This portfolio is unique with proprietary recipes, and therefore we do not outsource production," Campbell said in a statement to Bloomberg News. "We've prioritized increasing supply and are already leveraging capacity opportunities across the network to meet increases in demand and maximize availability."Food shortages have become more common in 2020. Pepperidge Farm's Milano and Chessmen cookies may be tough to find in stores during the holidays due to a shortage

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVBsFMpYtOI">YouTube</a></div></div>Long before she became president of Pepperidge Farm and senior vice president of global baking and snacking for the Campbell Soup Company, Irene Chang Britt - nudged by her mother to leave the world of competitive cycling and get a graduate degree - arrived at orientation for new students at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Wearing pink spandex and biking cleats, she had ridden there, of course, on her bike.
"I didn't know business school was like this," she recalled thinking. "I'm so intimidated." Britt, whose undergraduate degree was in anthropology, went home and cried.
At the end of her first semester, which she failed, Britt received a letter from the school. It suggested she pursue another career path. Dejected, she met with her counselor, an accounting professor, who called her bluff.
"OK, you chicken," he said to her. "Don't be here." The counselor knew, Britt noted, that if he pushed her buttons, she would fight.
And she did.
"I finally figured out that business wasn't about all those complex theories that people were talking about," Britt said during her keynote address at the recent Wharton Women in Business conference. "And I finally [thought], 'Oh my god. This is about people. I get this.'"
She graduated on the dean's honor list.
At the Wharton conference, Britt recounted her zigzag path to business success while encouraging the women in attendance to embrace risky opportunities and, above all, to take action. Through her 28 years at Fortune 500 companies - she also had stints at Kraft Foods and Kimberly-Clark - Britt has come to the conclusion that "there are many great minds in the industry that are wasted because they never did anything. And the big prize goes to the person who is going to act.
"If you never get to a decision to actually act, run for the hills," Britt noted. "Do not be in a company like that. Because the worst thing that you can do in business is have no action."
Britt said this is especially true for women. "We have got to keep on just pushing and doing, because we will be second-guessed," she noted. "I've [spent] a lot of years in this game, and I am female, and I still face it: Guys are going to assume you're not going to do anything. There are still a lot of women who are really brilliant [but] who say, 'Oh, I would have said that. But I didn't. Somebody beat me to it.' Don't let yourself be one of them."
Pepperidge Farm, which sells breads, cookies and crackers (including the popular Milanos and Goldfish), was acquired by Campbell Soup Company in 1961. But the commercial bakery was founded in 1937 by a Connecticut housewife named Margaret Rudkin.
Britt recounted the story of Rudkin's rise - Rudkin had baked bread at home so her allergic youngest son could enjoy it; her Wall Street broker husband took loaves with him to the city to be sold in specialty stores. When Rudkin got home after having sold 10 loaves to the owner of a local grocery store, the store's owner had called, asking her to return with more bread.
"She was prepared," Britt said of Rudkin. "She was prepared with her bread-baking. She was prepared to go back with more loaves. She was prepared to say, 'Wow, I've got a business here.'"
That business now has annual revenues of more than $1.5 billion.
'Grab Opportunities'
One of four children, Britt was born in Taiwan and was raised in Canada. She has lived for the past 20 years in the United States and is an American citizen, fluent also in French and Chinese. She met her husband 29 years ago, when she sat behind him in a class at business school. Married for 27 years, they have a daughter, who is a junior at Kenyon College in Ohio, and a son, who is a high school freshman.
Along the way, her family has lived in, among other locales, the Netherlands, Paris, Vancouver and New Zealand. "Lest you think that I have career ADD," Britt said, "the theme of this is, grab opportunities. Grab opportunities, no matter how they come dressed, because there's always a chance to learn something else."
She was a competitive cyclist when she started undergraduate work in anthropology at the University of Toronto. Her brother also was a competitive cyclist. Neither had a job that summer, so they decided to open a cycling store. They rented space in a rat-infested building, but ultimately they expanded to run two stores and a mail-order business, surpassing $1 million in sales before selling the company.
When asked by a student how much planning went into her career, Britt was blunt.
"Absolutely zero," she stated. "You have to know yourself. So here's what I planned: I used to own my own company. I said when I went into a Fortune 500, 'I'd like to run a company again.' That's about as much planning as I did. And so every single thing that came along, even the opportunity to go run a plant, I'm [thought], 'Ooh, I've never run a plant before. I'd really like to understand manufacturing; yeah, I'll do that.' … I figured when I became CEO that it would be great to know how to run plants. And it's worked out pretty well."
Britt extolled the challenges inherent in turning around a business division or brand. (Her 12 years at Kimberly-Clark included time spent as "toilet-paper queen" - she was director of the washroom systems business, integrating the Scott Paper organization upon its acquisition by her firm.)
"Take the crappy assignments," Britt said. "Some of the best opportunities come disguised looking like work. If it's broken, I like it better, because then I can go fix something, right? Awesome. I don't know anything? That means I can go in and study like crazy and figure it out, and then go do something about it. When you turn it around, you're an absolute hero."
Learning to Let Go
She also broached a topic that was something of a thread at the conference.

"Women need to learn to let go," she noted. "In your professional life, absolutely, because what that does is it helps build other people. We tend to keep it with us, saying, 'Oh, well no one would do it as fast or as good.' And what you're doing is [keeping] other people from learning what you already know. And so women need to be able to let go. We need to let go in our business lives and start to grow other people, and we need to learn to let go in our personal lives. So that dirty sock is on the floor? Yeah, whatever. It's not going to kill anyone…. You not only help the next generation grow, but you also unlock a ton of capacity in yourself."
Asked about balancing motherhood with work, Britt pointed to the success she has had in her own family life, and mentioned several female colleagues who similarly have prevailed. But there is, she clarified, no true balance.
"There is juggling," she said. "There is generally being happy and satisfied. But it's not really about balance on one given day."
A few years ago, as Britt spent more time traveling overseas, her husband decided to retire so he could be home with their children. Focusing on people is a theme which Britt, who initially studied to be an anthropologist, returned to often during her talk.
"I think the biggest thing that I've learned as an anthropologist is that we should never, ever forget that it's all about the consumer," she said. "Everybody wants to make this really, really hard. You know what it is with food? [Consumers] have to go to the store, they have to pick up your package, they have to pay for it, they have to get home, open it, put it in their mouths, chew it, swallow it, like it, repeat. And everybody forgets that. It's about human behavior … and [whether you can] be smart enough to figure out the bundle of benefits to give to a human being [so that] he or she says, 'Hmm, I want to do that again.'"

Typically, healthy adults can recover in less than a week, but the infection can be fatal for young children, older people, and others with weakened immune systems.Salmonella is responsible for some of the most widespread food-poisoning outbreaks in the United States in recent history. In 1985, more than 6,000 people were sickened and nine people died in a salmonella outbreak tied to tainted milk. Campbell Soup announced Monday that it had agreed to buy the snack maker Snyder's Lance for $50 per share in an all-cash deal. The offer represents a 27% premium to Snyder's close on Wednesday, a day before CNBC first reported that the company had hired an investment bank to consider a sale following an offer from Campbell.The deal "will provide our consumers with an even greater variety of better-for-you snacks," said Campbell Soup CEO Denise Morrison in a statement. We tested 4 grocery store cookies and figured out the only brand worth buying

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Campbell Soup Co. said it would reorganize its business into product divisions, instead of geographies or brand groups, as it focuses on growth areas in the face of cooling soup sales.
The company said the reorganization would shift its "center of gravity", a reference to its troubled soup business that has managed to boost sales only twice in the past five quarters.
The world's largest soup maker said it would now have three divisions - America's simple meals and beverages, global biscuits and snacks, and packaged fresh products, which include seasoned baby carrots. Currently, the company has five divisions.
The iconic Campbell's brand founded in 1869, also includes Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish, Bolthouse Farms, V8, Swanson, Prego, Pace, Plum Organics, Arnott's, Tim Tam, Royal Dansk and Kjeldsens in its portfolio.

Weak sales prompted Chief Executive Denise Morrison to launch a turnaround program after taking office in 2011, spending hundreds of millions of dollars to revamp the company's marketing and packaging strategies.
"The adoption of our new enterprise structure will be an important milestone for Campbell," Morrison said in a <a href="http://investor.campbellsoupcompany.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=88650&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=2011711" target="_blank">company news release</a>. "This reorganization will help unlock the value of our brands and the growth potential of our business. It will drive focused investment on our largest growth opportunities. It is the logical next step in our ongoing effort to shift our company's center of gravity, accelerate our growth trajectory and maximize value for our shareholders."
New product launches included "to-go" soups that could be made in a Keurig Green Mountain Inc coffee machine. The company also acquired or developed a slew of brands and products such as puffed Goldfish snacks and Bolthouse Farms, a producer of fresh carrots and beverages.
The turnaround efforts have yet to bear fruit on a sustained basis, however.
Increasing competition from store brands, private labels and niche producers such as Pacific of Oregon, Harris Foods Co and Amy's Kitchen Inc, have also hurt the company's soup business. Thursday's reorganization will make the company more streamlined and simplified, according to Campbell's statement.
Campbell's shares were little changed at $45.73 in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
The company is scheduled to report second-quarter results on Feb. 25.

Honda Finally Decides Which Ad Agencies Will Get Its Creative [THE BRIEF]

The Food and Drug Administration in 2015 gave the food industry until next year to eliminate artificial trans fats from products sold in the US.New York City in 2007 enacted a restaurant ban on the fats and several counties in the state did the same.Before-and-after data published in a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association show that hospital admissions for heart attacks and strokes in those areas declined 6% compared with counties without bans. The study says that translates to 43 fewer heart attacks and strokes per 100,000 people. All the foods that contain trans fats, the massively unhealthy ingredient the FDA just banned

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:401px"><div class="image"></div>APChristian Gerhartsreiter in court in 2008.</div>A 52-year-old German immigrant by the name of Christian Gerhartsreiter is on trial this month in Los Angeles for the 1985 <keyword id="13542" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Murder">murder</keyword> of California man John Sohus.
While Gerhartsreiter is little known, many have heard of his alter-ego, Clark Rockefeller. Rockefeller was the subject of Lifetime movie, "Who is Clark Rockefeller?" and a <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/2009/01/fake_rockefeller200901">fantastic 2009 Vanity Fair profile</a>.
His case may be the most unbelievable case of <keyword id="38935" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fraud">fraud</keyword> in modern America. Now, if Gerhartsreiter is found guilty in Los Angeles, it may include a grisly double murder too.
<h3>"Clark Rockefeller"</h3>
In the 1990s, Gerhartsreiter, who is believed to have snuck into the country as a teenager, managed to convince many of New England's elite that he was the moneyed son of George Rockefeller and Mary Roberts.
He was so convincing that he managed to marry Sandra Boss, a high-earning Mckinsey executive with degrees from Stanford and Harvard Business School. The couple had a child together, living entirely off of Boss' salary, <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/06/12/rockefeller_verdict/?page=2">said to be in the range of $2 million a year</a>.
The couple eventually separated; Boss became suspicious of her husband's identity (she hired a private detective who confirmed he wasn't a Rockefeller) and his behavior was increasingly bizarre.
Gerhartsreiter responded by putting his $800,000 divorce settlement in gold coins and abducting their daughter. After an international manhunt, he was caught and sentenced to jail in 2009 for the kidnapping and assault and battery, with the jury <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/06/12/rockefeller_verdict/?page=1">rejecting the defense of insanity</a>.
The court case revealed some other tall tales by Gerhartsreiter, according to the Boston Globe, including "his work with the international Trilateral Commission; the blame he bore for the collapse of the Asian financial markets; and that he ended seven mute years as a child with the word 'woofness.'"
ABC News had <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/News/story?id=7672617&amp;page=2#.UVcxk6sjprc">more details from an FBI profile</a>, noting that Gerhartsreiter "does not use metal utensils, will not eat bread unless it is white Pepperidge Farm with the crusts cut off, and that he met Sandra Boss at a Clue party where she was dressed as Scarlett O'Hara and he was Colonel Mustard. The two fell for one another while speaking Klingon, the language spoken by some on the TV series 'Star Trek.""
After that trial's publicity, Gerhartsreiter was traced back to Germany, where his birth parents said they had not seen him since 1978. Gerhartsreiter refused to accept this, instead claiming former actress Ann Carter had raised him (<a href="http://www.wcvb.com/-Rockefeller-Is-Not-My-Son-Actress-Says/-/9849586/11327524/-/k83fx0/-/index.html">a claim she later denied</a>).
<h3>The Murder Twist</h3>
The new trial in Los Angeles began earlier this month and relates to another time in Gerhartsreiter's life and another identity — Christopher Chichester.
John Sohus and his wife disappeared in 1985 in San Marino. Sohus' alcoholic mother told friends that the pair had gone on a top secret mission for the government. Nine years later human remains were found under the Sohus' home — the remains appeared to belong to John Sohus, and he appeared to have been bludgeoned to death, hacked to pieces, and put into plastic bags. His wife's remains have not been discovered.
For decades the case was unsolved, but as more details come out about Gerhartsreiter's past, he has emerged as a clear suspect.
A "Christopher Chichester" was known to have rented a guest house from Sohus' mother at the time. The same man later tried to sell witnesses an <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jan/25/local/la-me-rockefeller-20120125">Oriental rug that appeared to have a bloody stain on it</a>, according to the Los Angeles Times, and had the victim's truck after his death.
One piece of Sohus' body was found in a plastic bag stamped with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Gerhartsreiter studied at the university during the time that that logo was in use.
This week the court heard testimony from a girlfriend who lived in New York with Gerhartsreiter during the late 1980s that he acted bizarre <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2013/mar/27/local/la-me-fake-rockefeller-20130328">when a police officer attempted to contact him about the murder</a>. Gerhartsreiter — then living as Christopher Crowe — apparently dyed his hair black and his eyebrows blonde.
Gerhartsreiter's ex-wife, Boss, is expected to testify in the case, which <a href="http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_22862105/how-much-dirty-laundry-wil-be-aired-accused">may well bring out more details</a>.
Gerhartsreiter may never testify in the trial himself — defense lawyers are refusing to say if he will or not, <a href="http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2013/03/tv_interview_played_in_clark_rockefeller_impostor_trial">according to</a> the Boston Herald — so jurors were shown <a href="http://www.today.com/id/26351121/ns/today-today_news/t/clark-rockefeller-my-ex-never-believed-my-story/#.UVcpnqsjprc">an </a><a href="http://www.today.com/id/26351121/ns/today-today_news/t/clark-rockefeller-my-ex-never-believed-my-story/#.UVcpnqsjprc">August 2008 interview of Christian Gerhartsreiter on</a> NBC's "Today", <a href="http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2013/03/tv_interview_played_in_clark_rockefeller_impostor_trial">wherein he offers an oblique denial</a>.
The denial comes around 11 minutes into the video below, but the entire interview is fascinating to watch — for example, the moment where Gerhartsreiter puts on a Scottish accent and recites Robert Burns.

<h3>Will He Be Convicted?</h3>
One big problem with the murder case is that events took place so long ago, at least two witnesses have <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jan/25/local/la-me-rockefeller-20120125">failed to recognize Gerhartsreiter in court</a>, the Los Angeles Times reports, and a lot of the evidence in the case is circumstantial at best.
Gerhartsreiter's defense rests upon pointing the blame towards John Sohus' wife Linda, arguing that she was more physically capable of killing her husband in such a violent manner (at 6 feet tall, Linda was almost a foot taller than Gerhartsreiter).
While nearly everyone agrees that Gerhartsreiter is an unusual guy, convicting him of murder may be a much harder task.
