If you’re an avid social media user, chances are you've stumbled across the term “small d*ck energy” (SDE). Before you let your imaginations run wild on how researchers collected the data, let us clarify that this research was solely based on data from the 2023 ‘Masculinity, Sexual Health and Politics’ survey. Secondly, and more importantly, they found that men who were satisfied with their penis size were slightly more likely to buy a gun! Naturally, you may wonder how reliable this conclusion is, since the data was based on subjective responses from the participants. And you would be right—researchers do admit that no causal or temporal inferences can be made, as the analysis is based on a cross-sectional design and because penis dissatisfaction is measured with single-item self-reports. Are men with penis size insecurities more likely to own a gun? US sociologists investigate!

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Matt, a contractor in his 40s, spent $16,000 to get Penuma, a silicone penis-enlargement implant.</li><li>He's one of nine men who told Insider the implant caused damage or swelling in their penises.</li></ul>Matt first discovered Penuma, a silicone penile implant that's surgically inserted just under the skin of the penis shaft, via an online search. The implant increases both flaccid length and flaccid and erect girth, and helps straighten out penises with <a href="https://www.drelist.com/blog/congenital-penile-curvature/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mild to moderate</a> curvature.The latter issue was Matt's concern. He didn't like the curve in his penis, and he worried it might be hurting his girlfriend during sex, he <a href="https://www.insider.com/penuma-implant-penis-enlargement-enhancement-surgery-james-elist-2023-3">previously told Insider</a>.In September 2019, Matt flew to Los Angeles to have Penuma implanted by its inventor, urologist Dr. James Elist. Since the device received its first FDA approval in 2004, nearly 5,000 men have gotten it, and Elist has trained 17 other urologists to implant it. The FDA has since cleared it twice more, most recently in 2022, when it <a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfpmn/pmn.cfm?ID=K220760" target="_blank" rel="noopener">clarified</a> that Penuma is intended for penile augmentation. The outpatient procedure is brief, typically lasting 45 to 60 minutes. His penis ultimately ended up curved even worse than before, "like an orange peel in the sun," said Matt, who requested anonymity given both the sensitive nature of the surgery and his concerns about possible legal action from Elist. "I had to push it into the toilet to go pee." Matt shared his experience with Insider for <a href="https://www.insider.com/penuma-implant-penis-enlargement-enhancement-surgery-james-elist-2023-3">a larger story</a> about the implant and its effects, which is based on interviews with 13 other Penuma patients. <h2>Matt says he cared for his penis meticulously, but complications still arose</h2>Matt previously told Insider that after the surgery, he followed Elist's strict orders: No sex, no masturbation, and using a compression wrap that fit snugly around the penis. His girlfriend, a registered nurse, confirmed to Insider that she double-checked his work. He had been asked to stay in touch with Elist's office for eight weeks. Around week four, the complications began. "When I get random erections at night, the blood flow combined with the additional fluid swelling is overwhelmingly painful," Matt told Elist via email. (A spokesperson for Elist declined to comment on Matt's specific case, citing patient confidentiality.) The painful swelling did not go away, Matt said. Five months later, in February 2020, he returned to Elist's office to have him remove the implant. He ultimately chose to seek care from other urologists, and has since had seven pricey correctional procedures. <h2>Insider interviewed other patients who said Matt's experience was not unique</h2>Nine of the 14 patients interviewed for Insider's story said they experienced significant side effects, including excruciating pain in their penises, swelling, seromas and erectile dysfunction. The device is billed as removable, but two of the men told Insider that doing so caused them to lose penile length and sensation.Elist contends that most Penuma patients are satisfied with the device, citing his own <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30145095/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 study</a>, which found that 81% of subjects had "high" or "very high" levels of satisfaction two to six years post-operation. "There is no procedure without any complications," he told Insider. "I've seen this thing erode through the skin, I've seen it fragment, I've seen it curl," said Dr. Mark P. Solomon, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Philadelphia and Beverly Hills. Solomon, who's <a href="https://academic.oup.com/asj/article/38/2/NP39/4754059" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> and lectured on complications from penis enhancement surgery, estimates he's removed between 50 and 100 Penuma devices.Matt is one of nine patients who've <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23702808-2023-amended-california-medical-board-accusation-against-james-elist?responsive=1&amp;title=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed a complaint</a> against Elist with the California Medical Board. In the complaint, they accuse Elist of misdiagnosing them with penile dysmorphic disorder or low self-esteem without proper psychological evaluations; minimizing their post-surgical complaints of swelling, pain, curvature and loss of sensation; and maintaining inaccurate records, among other concerns. "The accusations are false," a representative for Elist told Insider. "We are confident the matter will be resolved favorably with the California Medical Board." As for Matt's penis, it now looks "OK" after multiple correctional procedures."It looks like it's finally back to normal and it works great now," he said. "But it took a fortune and years of despair to get here."

But when they size themselves up against the adult film industry they may start having insecurities," <a href="https://www.jaminbrahmbhatt.com/">Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt</a>, a urologist in Orlando, Florida, told Insider.When a patient tells Brahmbatt penis size is a concern for them, he reminds them the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8709382/">average penis</a> is 3.5 inches long when flaccid and 5.1 inches when erect.He also said a normally healthy person, whether they fall above or below the average, shouldn't experience lack of sexual satisfaction due to size alone. <h2>Myth: You can use supplements to lower your post-sex refractory period</h2>With a simple Google search, you'll find there's a huge market for pills that promise to lower your <a href="https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/refractory-period#reduction">refractory period</a>, or the time it takes after ejaculating to get an erection again.But there's no scientific evidence to show these supplements, which lower levels of the hormone prolactin, work.The pills are marketed under the supposition that high prolactin levels in men make their refractory periods longer, so reducing levels of prolactin can reduce that period when they're unable to get it up.But recent <a href="https://phys.org/news/2021-01-men.html">research</a> on mice, who have similar sexual behaviors to humans, found prolactin isn't to blame to refractory periods.Researchers from Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Portugal found no difference in mice who were given prolactin after sex and mice who weren't given any prolaction after sex."If prolactin was indeed necessary for the refectory period, males without prolactin should have regained sexual activity after ejaculation faster than controls," Susana Valente, one of the study authors, <a href="https://phys.org/news/2021-01-men.html">told Phys.org</a>. "But they did not."Urologists have also warned against using supplements to reduce your refractory period."There is no hard science backing up the proposed claims. Plus, supplements are not FDA-regulated so what you think you are taking, may not be what you are taking," <a href="https://www.jaminbrahmbhatt.com/">Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt</a>, a urologist at Orlando Health and assistant professor at UCF College of Medicine, told <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/sex-women/a19524569/refractory-period/">Men's Health</a>.<h2>Myth: 'Blue balls' can be deadly</h2>It's certainly scary to see your testicles turn blue and to feel pain and discomfort in your penis.But those sensations, which are often indicative of the condition <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/sex-women/a19534594/science-blue-balls/">epididymal hypertension</a>, or "blue balls," aren't life-threatening or a risk for permanent damage.Epididymal hypertension occurs when a person has "excess blood remaining in the testicles from a wave of erections not followed by ejaculation," according to Brahmbatt.Normally, when a man gets aroused, blood flows to the penis and testicles, and causes an erection. If the man ejaculates, the blood returns to a normal level. But if he doesn't, blue balls can occur instead.Brahmbatt said there's no "cure" for blue balls. "Anecdotally, the quickest way to recovery appears to be ejaculation. Other ways discussed in forums include ice packs, avoiding erections, [and] exercise of some sort," he said.In some cases, symptoms of a more serious problem could be confused with blue balls, so its important to see a doctor if it doesn't go away, Brahmbatt said.<h2>Myth: Men never fake orgasms</h2>When men reach climax, the tell-tale sign is ejaculation.But Brahmbatt said that doesn't exempt men from faking orgasms."Men can fake the sights and sounds of an orgasm. The only problem is there may be not visible ejaculate. They could, at that time, just blame it on a medication or medical problem," Brahmbatt said.<h2>Myth: Men can't have more than one orgasm at a time</h2>Some women can have consecutive orgasms during sex without any downtime. But since the majority of men ejaculate during climax, they're less likely to experience more than one orgasm in a single sex session.But that doesn't mean it's impossible, according to Kinsey Institute sex researcher Justin Lehmiller.The reason men typically only have one orgasm is the refractory period, or time it takes after ejaculating for the penis to become erect again."The length of this period is highly variable across men, but could be just a few minutes in a younger guy compared to hours (or maybe even days) in older guys," Lehmiller <a href="https://www.lehmiller.com/blog/2014/3/10/can-men-have-multiple-orgasms-too">wrote on his website</a> where he shares his research findings.But some men can orgasm without ejaculating, so for them, it's possible to have more than one orgasm in a row since the refractory period is taken out of the equation.In fact, a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2818169/">1989 study</a> looked at 21 men who were able to have consecutive orgasms without a refractory period.<h2>Myth: Premature ejaculation is incurable</h2><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/premature-ejaculation/symptoms-causes/syc-20354900#:~:text=Premature%20ejaculation%20occurs%20when%20a,this%20problem%20at%20some%20time.">Premature ejaculation</a>, or ejaculating before you or your partner would like during sex, is a common problem among men.As Insider previously reported, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-cure-premature-ejaculation-cant-last-in-bed-2019-9">1 in 3 men have experienced premature ejaculation</a> at some point in their lives. But it can be fixed with the help of topicals, condoms, and medications.According to Dr. Seth Cohen, a urologist at NYU Langone Health, penis sprays and condoms from <a href="https://www.promescent.com/faq">Promescent</a> and <a href="https://www.getroman.com/premature-ejaculation/">Roman</a> contain ingredients that temporarily desensitize the penis to prevent early onset ejaculation.Cohen said SSRIs like Prozac, which are commonly used to treat depression, may be used off-label to delay ejaculation. 7 myths about male orgasms you should stop believing

Penis size is an important factor in male attractiveness, a new study suggests. It's as important as height and more important than shoulder-to-hip ratios, the study says.
Of course, this is a kind of weird study, because usually we meet mates while wearing clothing — and they shouldn't be able to determine penis size.
It would be relevant, though, before humans invented clothing. And it could have influenced how the penis evolved, because without clothes, humanity's upright posture a man's "protruding, non-retractable genitalia" would have been clearly visible to potential mates.
Females may have preferred to mate with males with larger penises, hoping to pass on the attractive trait to their sons. This could be what led to the human penis being longer and thicker than it is in any other primate.
<a href="http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2013/04/the-final-word-on-penis-size.html#.UWMhs6A4wIc.twitter">Science Magazine suggests</a>:
Women may have selected for larger penises because they're linked to higher rates of female orgasm and sexual satisfaction, which may explain why the human penis is proportionally larger than those of our evolutionary cousins.
Luckily, this has diminishing returns as the penises get bigger and bigger. As <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/bigger-not-always-better-for-penis-size-1.12770">Nature News puts it</a>, "<keyword id="2754" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Men">men</keyword> with substantially larger-than average features were not found much more attractive than those with only slightly above-average features."
The study was published in the journal <a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/04/03/1219361110">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>. And yes, PNAS does sound a lot like penis. The researchers used 3D models of naked men with varying body shapes, height, and flaccid penis length — up to 5.1 inches. That being said, having a longer penis had a bigger effect on tall people. It may not be pretty, or a registry item, but it's one small thing I can offer in the face of a system that isn't focused on truly caring for birthing people.<h2>Our well-being isn't high on the list of priorities</h2>I cannot make a list long enough to encapsulate all the ways mothers and birthing people are harmed by the structures that are supposed to support us in doing "the most important job in the world."Each step on the motherhood journey is another piece of evidence that mothers' well-being is at the bottom of the culture's priority list — from prejudiced, substandard prenatal and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/advice-on-postpartum-care-2019-4">postpartum care</a> with abysmal maternal health outcomes, to no federal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/maternity-leave-around-the-world-2018-5">family leave</a>, to inaccessible mental health treatment, to the lack of affordable early childcare education, to inadequate public schools — particularly for marginalized kids and families — to the childcare black hole every day after school from three to six o'clock and all summer long.<h2>Mothers are expected to be caregivers and receive little care in return</h2>The care infrastructure in the US is "Money or Mommy" — if families don't have the financial means to pay out of pocket for everything from medical expertise to childcare, the onus is on mothers to provide it. We rage because over and over the culture says to mothers, "You are the caregivers. We will not take care of you."The refusal to invest in mothercare begins long before the baby is even born.Around 33% of Americans <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/FT_18.07.17_IVF_W36_Topline.pdf">reported in 2018</a> that they or someone they know has used some type of fertility treatment, and the global fertility industry was valued at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.economist.com/business/2019/08/08/the-fertility-business-is-booming">$25 billion in 2019</a>. Yet insurance coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other related treatments is limited at best, making the endeavor prohibitively expensive and out of reach for many. This discriminatory lack of access disproportionately impacts women, the LGBTQ community, and poor people. However, the vaginal canal is impressively flexible and how deep a vagina is at any given time often depends on the person as well as circumstances like sexual arousal, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. <h2>How deep is a vagina? </h2>According to a <a href="https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1471-0528.2004.00517.x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small 2005 study</a>, the average depth of a vagina is 9.6 centimeters (or 3.78 inches). However, it has the ability to <a href="https://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/how-deep-average-vagina-and-does-it-elongate-when-somethings-it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stretch</a> when sexually aroused to accommodate a penis.The vagina can also stretch six inches or wider during childbirth to accommodate the baby's head and shoulders, says <a href="http://www.mygynpractice.com/contents/meet-our-practitioners" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maureen Whelihan, MD, FACOG</a>, a gynecologist at the <a href="http://www.mygynpractice.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elite GYN Care of the Palm Beaches</a> and section chair of <a href="https://www.acog.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists</a> (ACOG) District XII.<h2>Does vaginal depth affect sexual pleasure?</h2>Some people may think that having a deeper vagina is more pleasurable because there will be more nerve endings to heighten the sensation.However, "the current evidence suggests that vaginal length is not associated with sexual satisfaction. Most women are aroused from the clitoris which is independent from vaginal length," says <a href="https://www.yalemedicine.org/specialists/oz_harmanli" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oz Harmanli, MD</a>, chief of <a href="https://www.yalemedicine.org/departments/urogynecology-and-reconstructive-pelvic-surgery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yale Medicine Urogynecology &amp; Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery</a> and professor at the <a href="https://medicine.yale.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yale School of Medicine</a>.Additionally, a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2893226/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2010 study</a> involving more than 500 heterosexual women found that the length of the vagina did not seem to affect how sexually active they were.<h2>How does the vagina change over time? </h2>Age and lifestyle has a big impact on how the vagina changes over time. In particular, <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sexual-health/vagina-changes-after-childbirth/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">giving birth</a> and going through menopause are perhaps the two primary events in a person's life that will significantly <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-your-vagina-changes-2018-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">change</a> their vagina.<h3>Childbirth</h3>Childbirth can affect vaginal depth because the pelvic floor muscles, which <a href="http://www.childbirthconnection.org/giving-birth/pelvic-floor/basics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">support</a> the pelvic organs such as the uterus, bladder, and bowels, get stretched out to support the weight of the baby. In fact, a <a href="https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/10.1146/annurev-bioeng-061008-124823" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2009 study</a> found that the pelvic floor muscles stretch more than three times their normal size during labor.The vagina can remain lax after childbirth for up to a year, depending on the size of the baby or the number of babies that were born, says Whelihan."The main reason for [feeling loose] could be pelvic floor relaxation and tears as a result of pregnancies, and especially vaginal deliveries," says Harmanli.Experts say <a href="https://www.insider.com/kegel-exercises" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kegel exercises</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/pelvic-floor-excercises" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pelvic floor exercises</a> can help <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000141.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">regain</a> muscle strength in the pelvic floor, which <a href="https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/patient-education/pelvic-floor-muscle-kegel-exercises-women-improve-sexual-health">increases</a> sexual arousal and vaginal lubrication.<h3>Menopause</h3>During menopause, estrogen levels drop, which <a href="https://www.menopause.org/for-women/sexual-health-menopause-online/changes-at-midlife/changes-in-the-vagina-and-vulva" target="_blank" rel="noopener">makes</a> the vaginal canal shorter and narrower, says Harmanli. Postmenopausal individuals may feel like there is less room inside the vagina for intercourse if they don't have penetrative sex for a long time, he adds. However, having regular vaginal sexual activity even after menopause <a href="https://www.menopause.org/for-women/sexual-health-menopause-online/changes-at-midlife/changes-in-the-vagina-and-vulva" target="_blank" rel="noopener">helps</a> maintain the vagina's length and width and reduces dryness.<h2>What if a vagina feels loose during sex?</h2>When it comes to penetrative sex, there is a pervasive myth that having more sex will make the vagina feel "loose" and lead to less pleasurable sex. However, this is <a href="https://www.centreforsexuality.ca/sexual-health-info/sex-myths/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not true</a> and is most likely used to <a href="https://www.insider.com/myths-about-the-vagina-2018-1#myth-your-vagina-will-get-loose-if-you-have-a-lot-of-sex-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shame</a> people for their sexual activity.A vagina that is perceived as loose might point to a lack of arousal or be reflective of their partner's <a href="https://www.insider.com/average-penis-size" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small penis</a> or inability to maintain a firm erection, says Whelihan.Therefore, if the quality of your sexual experience has diminished, it's important to communicate with your partner(s) about each other's wants, needs, and openness to try new things.<h2>Insider's takeaway </h2>The vaginal canal is usually about seven to ten centimeters deep.
