<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wikimedia Commons</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Portland coffee juggernaut and hipster favorite, Stumptown Coffee Roasters <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/07/business/dealbook/peets-buys-stumptown-coffee-roasters.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur">is being purchased by another West Coast coffee giant, Peet's Coffee &amp; Tea</a>, according to The New York Times.</p><p>Stumptown owner and founder Duane Sorenson <a href="http://www.eater.com/2015/10/6/9466285/peets-coffee-tea-buying-stumptown-coffee-roasters">confirmed the deal in an email to Eater</a> on Tuesday afternoon.</p><p><span>"Stumptown's journey has been about creating a coffee experience that surpasses all expectations. I'm excited and confident that Peet's will continue to support our journey in a way that uniquely reflects who we are," Sorenson told Eater in a prepared statement. </span></p><p>Peet's will purchase ownership of Stumptown from existing shareholders, though purchase price and other terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. </p><p>Despite the deal, both companies have been quick to emphasize that the two chains will operate indepedently.</p><p><span>"We both fit well under a family of coffee brands run independently and treated as separate businesses but with similar values," Joth Ricci, president of Stumptown, told The New York Times. </span></p><p><span>According to the Times, one of the main attractions for Peet's was Stumptown's success with cold-brewed coffee, the latest crave for coffee aficionados. One of the trendiest coffee chains in the US just got bought

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Pete's Coffee and Tea is on a buying spree.</span></p><p><span><span>On Friday, Pete's announced it will acquire a majority stake in Chicago-based </span><span>roaster</span><span>, Intelligentsia Coffee, according to </span><a href="http://www.eater.com/2015/10/30/9643642/blockbuster-peets-coffee-tea-buys-intelligentsia-coffee">Eater</a><span>.</span></span></p><p><span>This is the second time in one month that Peet's&#xa0;bought a stake in a small coffee chain.&#xa0;<span>It also acquired a stake in Portland-based Stumptown Coffee in early October.</span></span></p><p>Headquartered in Berkeley, California, Peet's&#xa0;has been expanding rapidly over the past few years.</p><p>After opening its first locations on&#xa0;the West Coast - like the&#xa0;other coffee giant, Starbucks - Peet's now has coffee shops&#xa0;in&#xa0;California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, DC.</p><p><span>Peet's says it will let Intelligentsia and Peet's continue to operate independently.</span></p><p><span>Stumptown is most commonly known for its ready-to-drink cold brew. Peet's will keep Stumptown as a separate brand and will <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> the brand's name across its cafes, wholesale, and grocery channels.</span></p><p>As for Intelligentsia, the coffee shop has a total of 10 locations&#xa0;in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. It boasts its acute observance&#xa0;of the farming, roasting and cooling process of its coffee - offering a detailed description on its&#xa0;<a href="http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/content/coffee-process">website</a>.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Intelligentsia's co-founders are also planning to stay actively involved in the business.<p><span>Peet's </span><span>Coffee &amp; Tea CEO&#xa0;<span>Dave Burwick, made this strategic move in order to continue to evolve to cater to millennials, a<span>ccording to the&#xa0;</span><a href="http://investor.peets.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=939575">press release</a><span> </span><span>on the acquisition</span>:&#xa0;</span></span></p><p>"We're excited to welcome Intelligentsia to the Peet's family as the growth of the super-premium coffee market continues to explode in the U.S. It's driven by 18-34 year-olds who are more affluent, purchase premium brands from other categories like craft beer and pressed juice, and seek variety and new experiences."</p><p>While Peet's may be driven by an 18-34 year old customer base, so is Starbucks, which has 21,366 locations world-wide.&#xa0;</p><p>With over 200 locations nationwide, Peet's has a way to go before being a major competitor of Starbucks.&#xa0;</p>

Starbucks' smaller competitor is buying up some of the biggest names in coffee

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Keurig</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Keurig Green Mountain's next big thing is its cold-drink maker, as the recently-acquired company attempts a financial comeback. <br /><br />Called the Kold, it is going to be rolled out nationally next year. Right now, it is available on the company's website and in a few retailers.</p><p>On Monday, Keurig announced it is being acquired by JAB Group - which also has a majority stake in coffee-centric companies such as Peet's Coffee &amp; Tea<span>, </span>Caribou Coffee Company<span>,</span> and Jacobs Douwe Egberts - <span>for $92 per share. </span></p><p><span>The deal comes</span> after a year in which <span>shares of Keurig lost about 60% of their value, with<span> an all-time split-adjusted high of around $150 per share last November. </span></span><br /><br />Keurig faces a saturated market for its hot drink brewing machines, which means a lot is riding on the Kold - which can deliver a carbonated, chilled beverage in 90 seconds without using a CO2 canister. <br /><br />There's a lot of technology - and money - behind this. The company <span>filed </span><a href="http://www.coca-colacompany.com/innovation/introducing-keurig-kold-home-system-delivers-fresh-made-beverages-including-coca-cola-with-push-of-a-button/"><span>more than 50 patents,</span></a><span> and has another 100 applications pending, over the course of five years as it developed the system. Keurig invested about $100 million in the device in fiscal 2015, and said in September it planned to spend a similar amount in 2016.<br /></span><span><br />However, the roll out has so far been limited and often negative. Critics of the Kold have been quick to point out some big flaws in the device: it's expensive, large, needs to get warmed up and isn't more convenient than popping open a soda, according to some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/keurig-kold-reviews-are-brutal-2015-10">complaints on Keurig's website and Facebook page.<br /></a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/keurig-kold-reviews-are-brutal-2015-10"><br /></a>But a closer look at how the device works also reveals a few hints to how Keurig might be able to do to address some of these issues.</span></span></p>

The report said potential suitors could include Starbucks and Domino's.</p><p>In a note out to clients Tuesday, a group of equity analysts at Credit Suisse led by Jason West said Panera's most likely buyer is an investment group that has been buying up restaurant chains at a clip: <a href="http://www.jabholco.com/">JAB Holding Corp</a>.</p><p>"We believe JAB would be the most likely acquirer of PNRA given JAB's current portfolio of coffee assets (Krispy Kreme, Keurig, Peet's, etc.)," Credit Suisse said. </p><p><span>JAB, the<span> </span><a href="http://qz.com/207122/meet-the-family-behind-the-worlds-biggest-new-coffee-company/">investment arm of the secretive Reimann family</a>, <span>has been busily scooping up companies in the consumer and food sectors in the past few years. It </span></span><span>spent<span> about </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jab-buying-krispy-kreme-2016-5">$1.35 billion</a><span> to buy Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in 2016. Soon after, the chain closed 80 locations, and rebranded 88 others as&#xa0;Peet's&#xa0;coffee shops. However, as a concept, it reveals JAB's future aspirations to combine multimillion-dollar chains in a way that could create a challenge for&#xa0;rivals like Starbucks.&#xa0;</span></p><p>Starbucks has long struggled with its food business, looking outside the company for assistance.&#xa0;</p><p>In<span>&#xa0;2012, Starbucks acquired the bakery&#xa0;<span>La Boulange</span>&#xa0;for $100 million. While Starbucks has grown its food business in the double-digits ever year since the acquisition, La Boulange </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-starbucks-closed-la-boulange-bakeries-2015-6">shuttered in 2015</a><span>. Starbucks still uses the bakery's recipes.</span></p><p><span>More recently, in July,&#xa0;<span>Starbucks<a href="http://nordic.businessinsider.com/starbucks-reserve-only-princi-partnership-2016-7/"> announced a partnership with Princi,</a> an artisan Italian bakery and restaurant, with plans to use the bakery's recipes in its new upscale Reserve and Roastery locations.</span></span></p><p>Starbucks' reliance on outside brands&#xa0;to grow its food business reveals a gap in the coffee industry that could create an opportunity for JAB. Peet's, which opened its first location in 1966, in&#xa0;<span>Berkeley, California, represented the company's first major investment into the American coffee business.&#xa0;</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Under JAB's control, Peet's has been&#xa0;on a buying spree. A European company you've never heard of is quietly building a caffeine empire that could challenge Starbucks

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook/Krispy Kreme</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>JAB Holding Company is buying Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for $21 a share, or about <span>$1.35 billion.</span></p><p><span>The deal is expected to close in the third quarter.</span></p><p>Last year JAB spent $13.9 billion to buy the home-brewing company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jab-holding-buys-keurig-coffee-2015-12">Keurig Green Mountain</a>.</p><p>It also owns Caribou Coffee and <span>JAB also has controlling stakes in Peet's Coffee &amp; Tea.</span></p><p>"This transaction puts us in the best possible position to continue to spread that joy to a growing number of people around the world while delivering significant value to Krispy Kreme shareholders," Krispy Kreme chairman Jim Morgan said in a statement.</p><p>Wells Fargo is advising Krispy Kreme and Barclays and BDT &amp; Company are advising JAB.</p><p>JAB also owns a stake in the consumer products company Reckitt Benckiser, which <span>owns everything from </span><span>Durex to Gaviscon.</span> It also has a luxury arm which houses investments in Jimmy Choo, Belstaff and Bally, and owns perfume maker Coty.</p><p>JAB struck a deal in 2013 to buy D.E. Master Blenders 1753, and later agreed a deal with Mondelez International to combine their respective coffee businesses. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images/Win McNamee</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Stocks went nowhere while the price of crude oil slid to start the week. </p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/crude-oil-price-may-9-2016-5">decline in oil prices</a> came after news out this weekend that Saudi Arabia would replace its oil minister after 20 years on the job. </p><p>First, the scoreboard:</p><ul><li>Dow: 17,699, -41, (-0.2%)</li><li>S&amp;P 500: 2,058, +1.2, (+0.1%)</li><li>Nasdaq: 4,750, +15, (+0.3%)</li><li>WTI crude oil: $43.40, -2.8%</li></ul><h2>Coffee, Donuts</h2><p>JAB Holdings is creating a coffee and donut empire. </p><p>On Monday, the European investment company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jab-buying-krispy-kreme-2016-5">announced a deal to acquire Krispy Kreme</a> for $1.35 billion, or $21 per share. Shares of Krispy Kreme gained about 24% on the news. </p><p>In December, JAB spent $13.9 billion to buy home-brewing coffee company Keurig Green Mountain. The company also owns Caribou Coffee and a controlling stake in Peet's Coffee &amp; Tea. </p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jab-holding-building-a-coffee-and-bagel-empire-2016-5">Here's a full rundown of the consumer-related companies JAB has scooped up in recent years</a>. </p><p>"This transaction puts us in the best possible position to continue to spread that joy to a growing number of people around the world while delivering significant value to Krispy Kreme shareholders," Krispy Kreme chairman Jim Morgan said in a statement on Monday. </p><p>The only thing I can definitely say on this deal is that Krispy Kreme has good donuts and good K-cup flavors. </p><h2>Fintech, Disrupted</h2><p>Fintech leader <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lending-club-ceo-stepping-down-2016-5">Lending Club announced Monday</a> that its CEO will be stepping down following an internal review that involved a $22 million loan sale. </p><p>In a statement Monday morning, Lending Club said CEO Renaud Laplanche would step down after, "<span>an internal review of sales of $22 million in near-prime loans to a single investor, in contravention of the investor's express instructions as to a noncredit and nonpricing element, in March and April 2016."</span></p><p><span>Basically, the company lined up a buyer for a pool of loans but then didn't deliver loans of the credit quality desired by the buyer of the loan pool. According to Bloomberg, Jefferies was the buyer of this particular pool. </span></p><p><span>Kadhim Shubber at <a href="http://ftalphaville.ft.com/2016/05/09/2161111/well-at-least-things-probably-cant-get-worse-for-lending-club/">FT Alphaville writes</a>:</span><span> "<span>A key selling point of online lending has been that the digitisation of the loan process means that data is easier to analyse and, critically, more trustworthy. But as </span><a href="http://ftalphaville.ft.com/2016/04/01/2158123/transparency-is-our-skin-in-the-game/" target="_blank" title="" Transparency="" is="" our="" skin="" in="" the="" game="">we've argued before</a><span>, it's wrong to assume that greater transparency and detail equals greater accuracy, particularly when the key issue in lending has always related to incentives rather than information."</span></span></p><p><span><span>Basically, fintech needs borrower but it also needs purchasers of those loans just as much and getting those two folks to line up is not a particularly easy process. In fact, in this case it didn't seem to work at all! </span></span></p><p><span>Elsewhere, the company reported earnings that missed on the bottom line though revenue came in better than expected. </span></p><h2><span>Bond Market Liquidity</span></h2><p><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/deutsche-bank-on-bond-market-liquidity-2016-5">Matt Turner is worried about bond market liquidity</a>. </span></p><p><span>Or, specifically, about the use of bond ETFs as a source of liquidity when the price of the bonds underlying the ETFs are probably stale. </span></p><p><span>But as this chart from Deutsche Bank shows, there is basically a period in which bonds exist, in terms of being legitimate market instruments for which an investors can get up-to-date pricing information, and then the bonds just sort of sit. </span><span>Like, say, in the pool of bonds that compose an ETF, the price of which is guesstimated and used a source of daily liquidity for those bond investors who can't this liquidity elsewhere. </span></p><p><span>And so on. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Deutsche Bank</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Here's Deutsche Bank:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">So there you have it: roughly one-third of all names in HY and IG barely ever trade. They could go for months without a real price print, meaning that <strong>all those indexes tracking thousands of ISINs on a daily basis are routinely guessing values for 25-40% of their constituents.</strong></p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">It is what it is, whether we like it or not, the reality of the situation, and at least to this point, the industry has not come up with a better solution to this problem than guesstimating values for a large number of bonds. But it nevertheless provides an important lesson to all those using indexes to measure their volatility, sharpe ratios and other useful risk/return characteristics. <strong>Because a large portion of this indexes is marked at stale prices, all these otherwise useful measures are routinely underestimating true volatility in credit. </strong></p><p>Citi, meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/citi-says-10-year-yield-to-retest-lows-2016-5">thinks the 10-year could be headed</a> to 1.5% this year an possible back to its all-time low of 1.38%. </p><h2>Bill Ackman</h2><p>Bill Ackman sent some really great emails during the whole Valeant blow-up back in the fall. </p><p>Among them was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-ackman-email-to-charlie-munger-2016-5">lengthy email to Charlie Munger </a>imploring him to reconsider his comparison of the company to ITT, one of the most famous conglomerate roll-ups from the 1960s. </p><p>Rather than compare Valeant to ITT, Ackman pitched Munger on a more familiar idea: Berkshire Hathaway. </p><p><span>"Valeant shares a lot of similarity to Berkshire in its decentralization, its approach to capital allocation, and its shareholder orientation," Ackman wrote. </span></p><p><span>"Pearson's management approach is similar to 3G's in the company's extremely cost-disciplined and rational approach to operations. While Valeant has made a large number of acquisitions of varying size in an extremely strategic and disciplined fashion since Pearson has been CEO, nearly all have been purchased for cash.</span></p><p><span>"Valeant is not a roll up which has used a high-value currency to buy lower-multiple unrelated businesses.
