Their mission would become one of the largest SAS operations since the end of World War II.<h2><keyword id="11894876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pebble-island" source="Orion">Pebble Island</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="Pebble Island in the Falkland Islands" height="1014" width="1532" msid="85457608" hostid="261"></div>Less than 10 miles long, Pebble Island was located just north of West Falkland, the second-largest of the Falkland Islands.Pebble Island had a small civilian settlement with its own airstrip. When the Argentines invaded, they discerned the strategic value of the location and quickly went to work upgrading the small airstrip to a potent airbase and early-warning facility.The Argentine Air Force relocated several aircraft there and built a radar station while planning to deploy hundreds of troops to protect what was becoming a major airbase.The Pebble Island airbase housed several Argentine Pucara ground-attack aircraft and modified T-34 Turbo Mento aircraft that could damage or sink the cumbersome and slow British amphibious landing ships.The Argentine Air Force fielded a hodgepodge fleet, including US-made A-4 Skyhawks, French-made Super Etendards and Mirage IIIs, Israeli-made Daggers, and UK-made English Electric Canberras. It was a fearsome and valiant opponent that came very close on its own to winning the conflict for Argentina.The closeness of the small civilian settlement to the airbase precluded an air attack, so British commanders turned to their special-operations troops.Although the main British armada was still far away, British special-operations forces had been operating in the Falklands for weeks, conducting reconnaissance operations to prepare the incoming force.<h2>In and out</h2><div type="image" title="British commands on HMS Hermes during Falklands War" height="1332" width="2000" msid="85457609" hostid="261"></div>On the night of May 11, a special-operations Sea King helicopter from the 846 Squadron, the pilots of which had just begun using night-vision goggles, inserted an eight-man team from D Squadron's boat troop at Keppel Island, a smaller island just across a sound from Pebble Island.The SAS team was there to find the location and number of Argentine aircraft and their defenses. Their reports would inform their colleagues who were gearing up to assault the airbase.The SAS reconnaissance team crossed the sound's freezing waters with Klepper canoes. Once ashore, six men found a hiding position while two commandos went forward and set up an observation post from which they could watch the airbase.The SAS men rotated shifts between the hiding place and the observation post for the next two days, avoiding Argentine patrols and sending back crucial intelligence.Meanwhile, the rest of D Squadron, about 45 men, was on standby to conduct the raid. When the reconnaissance was over, they would insert on Pebble Island, link up with the reconnaissance team, and proceed to the target.<div type="image" title="Argentina Air Force Skyhawk fighter jets" height="1239" width="2000" msid="85457611" hostid="261"></div>The SAS troopers were ready for anything. Besides their individual M-16 rifles, they carried LAW 66 anti-tank rockets, GPMG machine guns, high-explosive satchels, and even an 81 mm mortar.Each commando carried at least 80 pounds of gear, including 400 to 600 rounds of machine-gun ammunition and two mortar rounds that they would give to the fire-support elements just before the raid began.The assault force would take off from HMS Hermes, one of the two British aircraft carriers.Because of the danger posed by the Argentine Air Force and the value of Hermes to the British campaign, the ship couldn't operate close to the Falklands during daytime. So the SAS troopers had only a few hours to launch, destroy the airbase, and return to the ship before dawn.The recon team spotted 11 aircraft, which they believed to be real and not decoys, and radioed back. The mission was on.<h2>The raid on Pebble Island</h2><div type="image" title="British Royal Navy Falklands War" height="1282" width="2000" msid="85457613" hostid="261"></div>On the night of May 14, three Sea King helicopters inserted the assault force 5 miles from the airbase, where they linked up with the recon element. The mission started an hour late after one of the choppers had a malfunction just before takeoff.Time was running out, so the SAS troopers ran the 5 miles to the airbase. Some elements got lost on the way, but all were in their positions by 7 a.m. on May 15, when a nearby destroyer started bombarding the Argentine barracks.This was the signal for the attack, and the SAS got to work, planting explosives on the aircraft and destroying the radar and barracks.The raid was planned for 15 minutes, but it took 45. By the end, everything had been destroyed, including the 11 aircraft. Two members of the SAS assault force were lightly wounded before getting extracted.<div type="image" title="Argentina troops soldiers prisoners Falklands War" height="1265" width="2000" msid="85457614" hostid="261"></div>"The operation came at an opportune time. It served, so to speak, as a grand rehearsal before the landings that were scheduled to take place in a few days," a retired SAS officer told Insider."Hitherto, we had conducted mostly recces [reconnaissance operations] in South Georgia and the main [Falkland] islands," the retired officer said. "Pebble Island presented us with an opportunity to test our combat mettle. It was a basic but brilliant operation worthy of the Regiment's annals."Only a few days after the raid, however, disaster struck. I stayed for seven days and had the time of my life.I'd never been to the Caribbean country and heard rave reviews from the bride (whose family is from Barbados) and other friends who visited over the last few years.While Barbados has gained fame as the homeland <a href="https://www.insider.com/rihanna-net-worth-how-she-makes-her-money-2022-8">of beauty mogul and pop star Rihanna</a>, I wanted to go off the beaten path and avoid tourist traps. My mindset was to be open to venturing to new spots, so I made sure not to pack my itinerary and to be flexible.I grew up in the Los Angeles area and went to college in Charleston, South Carolina, so the beach is my home. In my travels, I've also spent time in Mexico, Thailand, Cuba, and Ghana, so I was excited to compare my beach experience in Barbados. The main difference was that Thunder Bay has more of a social, party feel than Peebles Beach. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Killer whales near Spain and Portugal have sunk three sailboats in recent years.</li><li>An orca name Luna that was damaging boats near Vancouver Island in the 2000s just wanted to play.</li></ul>A string of incidents in which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/portugal-orcas-sink-a-sailboat-and-ram-another-in-atlantic-2022-8?r=US&amp;IR=T">killer whales have rammed into and sunk sailboats</a> may have been triggered by a single, traumatized female, one scientist said — but at least one other orca has previously been documented purposefully colliding into boats, and for much less nefarious reasons.A population of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-orcas-kill-great-white-shark-eat-liver-south-africa-2022-7">killer whales</a> near Portugal and Spain's Iberian Peninsula first began having "disruptive" interactions with boats in 2020. Since then, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/mms.12947" target="_blank" rel="noopener">researchers</a> have identified hundreds of incidents in which an orca approached or collided with boat, though most incidents were short and caused minimal damage. The behavior generally follows the same pattern, with the orca approaching the back of the ship and hitting the rudder until successfully causing the boat to stop.In three cases, the orcas have caused sailboats to sink, leading some to brand the interactions as "attacks." Alfredo López Fernandez, a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal who is studying the orcas, told LiveScience the behavior may stem from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/traumatized-female-orca-behind-rise-killer-whale-attacks-scientists-2023-5">single female named White Gladis</a> who was struck by a boat and has since taken to ramming them. The other orcas may simply be learning the behavior from her.Andrew Trites, director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia in Canada, told Insider he was "blown away" by the recent incidents, adding they were "unprecedented." However, the encounters reminded him of a young male <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/orca-killer-whale-attack-boat-expert-advice-2023-5?inline-endstory-related-recommendations=">orca</a> named Luna that engaged in similar behavior with boats around 20 years ago.Luna was part of the L-pod of the <a href="https://whalemuseum.org/pages/frequently-asked-questions-about-the-southern-resident-endangered-orcas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Southern Resident Community of orcas</a>, which are endangered. The L-pod today is made up of about 30 individual orcas, who spend their summers near Washington's San Juan Islands. They eat fish, primarily salmon, and spend the winters hunting along the Pacific Coast, from California to Alaska.But in the summer of 2001, two-year-old Luna somehow ended up all alone."He got lost and separated from his pod, and was left behind in one of the outer coastal areas of British Colombia," Trites said.After Luna turned up solo in the Nootka Sound of Vancouver Island, scientists were initially skeptical of reports that a baby killer whale was all alone. Considering Luna's age and the social nature of orcas, they also weren't sure he would survive. But somehow he did, managing to hunt and feed himself without the support of a pod."Being a social animal, he got very lonely and became quite attached to boats," Trites said. "He learned how to swim up behind a boat, grab onto the rudder, and dismantle it to stop the boat from moving. It was an animal that was clearly searching for social interaction."Luna's desire to play with boats and be near humans made him <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/whale-of-a-tale-40617532/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">famous</a>. He would swim up to boats and rub up against them, or vocalize at people and even let them pet him. While many adored the playful killer whale who befriended humans, the situation inevitably caused problems.<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna5866161" target="_blank" rel="noopener">News reports</a> from the time recount how Luna's behavior damaged several boats. In 2004, the 75-year-old skipper of a fishing boat told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that after Luna damaged the boat, forcing him to rig a rope-and-pulley system just to steer, the orca continued to "harass and bang around the boat like a beach ball for five hours."The interactions prompted <a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=20060311&amp;slug=luna11m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">efforts to remove Luna</a> and reunite him with his pod, but those were opposed by a local Native community. Shortly before Luna appeared in Nootka Sound, the chief of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations had died. The Mowachat/Muchalahat peoples believed Luna embodied the spirit of their chief and did not want the orca to be moved.Luna remained in the sound for nearly five years, but "unfortunately for Luna, it did not end well," Trites said.The orca was killed in 2005 after being struck by a <a href="https://archive.seattletimes.com/archive/?date=20060311&amp;slug=luna11m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tugboat</a>.<h2>The killer whales 'attacking' boats might just be playing</h2>Like in the case of Luna, Trites believes the whales near the Iberian Peninsula are more likely engaging in playful behavior with boats, rather than "attacking" them."They're very tactile. They have a sense of touch. Their skin is sensitive," Trites said of orcas, explaining that they are known to rake their teeth over the body of another killer whale, rub and bump into each other, and even rub their bodies up against pebbles.Unlike Luna, this situation is unique in that it involves a growing number of whales. Trites said orcas are extremely intelligent and could learn behaviors simply by watching. The fact that other orcas are mimicking and adopting this behavior suggests it is being positively reinforced, meaning they are gaining some benefit or pleasure from it.He also said the idea that a single killer whale was traumatized and is taking "revenge" with the help of other orcas felt a bit too "Hollywood movie.""Undoubtedly the people on board these little boats feel attacked," Trites said, but noted he did not think "attack" was an accurate term as the intent of the behavior is not yet clear.Still, he said these interactions can be disastrous for whales and humans. I try to make it to Maui a few times a year, but I know that crowds and tourist traps can take away from that sense of rural, remote paradise. As such, I've carved out a go-to list of off-the-beaten-path places that honor the Maui I grew up with: unspoiled, raw, and visually extraordinary. From secret beaches devoid of crowds to incredible snorkeling and surfing spots, as well as hidden hikes tucked inside verdant valleys, and volcano craters that peek out from above the clouds, these activities will allow you to enjoy Maui like a knowledgeable local. I only ask that you be careful and follow the Hawaiian expression of mālama ʻāina (it's our responsibility to respect the land) and leave places just as you found them so that future generations can enjoy them. Along Big Beach, you can find more secluded spots that crowds don't know about, like Oneuli Beach or Paako Cove. For those with little experience on a board, I suggest the beginner-friendly waves at Guardrails, which isn't as crowded as fellow beginner spots, Launiupoko or Breakwall. But newbie surfers should never go out alone, so consider enlisting the help of an instructor, like from the woman-run surfing school, <a href="https://www.mauisurfergirls.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Maui Surfer Girls</a>. Those with a little more experience will have a lot of fun at Olowalu, which breaks in multiple places so you can avoid crowds.Advanced surfers have their picks too, like the world-famous Honolua Bay, known for its glassy barrels, or Hookipa. Look for Makena Alanui Road and when you park, make sure you don't park on lava rock — your tires will thank you. Go in the early morning and you might catch a glimpse of spinner dolphins.Or, <a href="https://redlinerafting.com/tours/molokini-snorkeling-tours-two-hour-trip/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow nofollow noopener sponsored sponsored">book a trip</a> to snorkel or dive around the crescent-shaped Molokini Crater, the state's only island marine sanctuary. Bring sunscreen, lots of water, and snacks, and pay attention to the weather and your skill level. Cruise line customers are questioning their travel plans after coronavirus forces Princess Cruise Line to shut down operations for 60 days

People walk on two legs like most avian species. 
They are also largely diurnal and rely upon sight as their primary sense. All of this, incidentally, is unlike most mammals. 
Yet how much do humans really share with birds?
More than people admit, argues Noah Strycker, an American field biologist, in a new book. The author wants people to appreciate birds "one feather at a time". He trawls through an impressive amount of field research and introduces readers to some flabbergasting facts.
A manx shearwater, for instance, was once kidnapped from a burrow on the Welsh coast and flown 3,200 miles (5,150km) before being released in Boston harbour.
In less than 13 days it had found its way home. Mr Strycker also alights on the amazing biometrics of hummingbirds, whose pea-sized hearts are the largest of any bird when measured in proportion to the bird's body mass. These vast organs can pound away at a staggering rate of 1,200 beats a minute.
What makes Mr Strycker's hummingbird essay particularly engaging is his concern to explore how the avian facts carry implications for human beings. It turns out that humans and hummingbirds, despite differences of scale and style, enjoy a lifespan of about a billion heartbeats, a rule that holds good for many warm-blooded animals, from mice to elephants.
But hummingbirds are "trapped" in an evolutionary sense at the outer margins of warm-blooded existence, locked by their relentless quest for high-calorie foods into a cycle of aggression, isolation and the constant threat of starvation.
None of this would matter were it not for the fact that human lives are also moving this way. The pace of life is quickening in wealthier countries; one study shows that it takes people an average 10.5 seconds to cover 60 feet (18.3 metres) of pavement in Singapore, 18 seconds in Bahrain and 31 seconds in Malawi, indicating marked differences between developed and developing nations.
Overall, people walk fastest in the world's biggest cities. Mr Strycker thinks people should heed the hummingbirds--creatures that are "slaves to speed, desperately fighting for control of calories".
"The Thing with Feathers" turns a shrewd, comparative eye on a succession of bird families to explore what he calls their "human" characteristics.
Most striking are the gorgeous Australian fairy-wrens (pictured), whose intergenerational altruism looks uncannily like humans' supportive family life, and the bowerbirds of New Guinea: avian painters and decorators that construct fancy little "gardens" of shell, pebble and foliage where they lure potential partners into a mating mood.
Could these bowers emanate from an aesthetic appreciation comparable to that manifest in human art? And does the albatross, always so loyal to its single long-term partner, raise the possibility of "love" and "commitment" that matches people's own marital lives? This is an engaging work which illuminates something profound about all life, including our own.

Avian Zoology: Fairy Creatures

The allegations stem from a chapter in Dunham's new book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/081299499X/?tag=googhydr-20&amp;hvadid=57028993968&amp;hvpos=1t1&amp;hvexid=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=4890473217202774428&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=e&amp;hvdev=c&amp;ref=pd_sl_6sucw6s84h_e">Not That Kind of Girl</a>," in which she describes an incident that occurred when she was seven-years-old and she "spread open" her one-year-old sister's vagina to see whether it was "like mine."

Truth Revolt <a href="http://www.truthrevolt.org/commentary/lena-dunham-threatens-sue-truth-revolt-quoting-her" target="_blank">today said they received a "cease and desist" letter</a> from Dunham's camp, demanding they remove <a href="http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/lena-dunham-describes-sexually-abusing-her-toddler-sister">an article posted</a> on sections of her book, and that legal action would follow if they did not both delete the article, as well as print a note, with the language suggested below:

Truth Revolt <a href="http://www.truthrevolt.org/commentary/lena-dunham-threatens-sue-truth-revolt-quoting-her" target="_blank">publicly responded</a> by stating:
We refuse. We refuse to withdraw our story or apologize for running it, because quoting a woman's book does not constitute a "false" story, even if she is a prominent actress and left-wing activist. Lena Dunham may not like our interpretation of her book, but unfortunately for her and her attorneys, she wrote that book - and the First Amendment covers a good deal of material she may not like...
We also look forward to asking her why she believes it is now appropriate for a 28-year-old woman to make light of opening her baby sister's vagina...
...for a woman who proclaims to be an advocate for <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/confidential/howard-stern-big-fat-meanie-girls-star-article-1.1238991">freedom of speech</a> to attempt to shut down such speech based on her own apparent embarrassment at her own disclosures in her own book demonstrates the totalitarianism of those on the left.
While Dunham's own sister has <a href="http://www.gossipcop.com/grace-dunham-twitter-reaction-lena-sexual-abuse/" target="_blank">come to her defense</a>, as have <a href="https://twitter.com/clementine_ford/status/529157560700399617" target="_blank">her friends</a>, many on Twitter are also disturbed by the book chapter:

"Yes," she told me. "We're born with them, and with all our eggs, but they start out very small. And they aren't ready to make babies until we're older."
I looked at my sister, now a slim, tough one-year-old, and at her tiny belly. I imagined her eggs inside her, like the sack of spider eggs in Charlotte's Web, and her uterus, the size of a thimble.
"Does her vagina look like mine?"
"I guess so," my mother said. "Just smaller."
One day, as I sat in our driveway in Long Island playing with blocks and buckets, my curiosity got the best of me. Grace was sitting up, babbling and smiling, and I leaned down between her legs and carefully spread open her vagina. She didn't resist, and when I saw what was inside I shrieked. "My mother came running. "Mama, Mama! Grace has something in there!"
My mother didn't bother asking why I had opened Grace's vagina. This was within the spectrum of things that I did. She just got on her knees and looked for herself. It quickly became apparent that Grace had stuffed six or seven pebbles in there. My mother removed them patiently while Grace cackled, thrilled that her prank had been such a success.
