The central government's push for <keyword id="19916955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="millet" source="keywords">millet</keyword> crop has increased the yearly income of 75 per cent of the millet farmers between 10 per cent to 20 per cent in Uttarakhand, revealed a study conducted on over 2,100 farmers by Indian Institute of Management, Kashipur. As per the IIM Kashipur study, the six-month-long study conducted by four senior professors and five data collectors, "Millet Production in Uttarakhand: An Empirical Analysis of its Socio-Economic Impact and Marketability Challenges" was recently released at the premises of the premier management institute. The International Year of Millet 2023 has played a role in raising awareness about millet as a sustainable crop worldwide and increased the demand for millet-based products both nationally and globally. The study found that the recent push by both the Centre and the State created a demand for millet crops in the market but the farmers were unaware of it. Besides, they found most farmers are growing Millets for self-consumption instead of earning a profit. "Most of the farmers growing millets for self-consumption and are not using it as a money crop like rice and wheat," said assistant professor <keyword id="20997580" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shivam-rai" source="keywords">Shivam Rai</keyword> of the IIM Kashipur, the Principal Investigator of the study. Apart from Shivam <keyword id="19931853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rai" source="keywords">Rai</keyword>, the co-investigators of the study are Dr Deepak <keyword id="20997581" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sangroya" source="keywords">Sangroya</keyword> and Dr Gaurav Kabra, Associate Professors at OP Jindal Global Business School and Dr Nishant Singh Assistant Professor at Bennett University. The study was funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research. "The study reveals that the government schemes designed to support the Millet farmers are becoming futile because of the communication gap and the language barrier. Millets are a sustainable crop which is not only nutritious, and healthy but also easy to store and doesn't damage the soil," said Professor Rai. The study was conducted to address the marketability challenges of millet production and identify effective strategies to increase its economic presence. The sample size for the survey was collected from the major hilly regions of the state such as Pithoragarh, Joshimath, Rudra Prayag, Chamoli and others. Millets are considered the staple food for the local community, enhancing their food security and nutrition by reducing their dependence on other cereal crops. The individuals part of the study believe their work will aid in devising strategies for improving the livelihoods of producers and the supply-value demand of millet. India produces all the nine commonly known traditional millets viz. Sorghum, Pearl Millet, Finger Millet, Foxtail Millet, Proso Millet, Little Millet, Barnyard Millet, Browntop Millet and Kodo Millet. The government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution for declaring the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets and the proposal of India was supported by 72 countries. Millet is a common term for categorizing small-seeded grasses that are often called Nutri-cereals. Most of the states in India grow one or more millet crop species. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are the major millets producing states. Millet push increased farmers' income 10-20% in Uttarakhand: IIM Kashipur study

With the United Nations designating 2023 as the International Year of Millets at India's request, the superfood - millets - is going to be the talk of the world soon. And proactive star hotels and food companies in India have chalked out their plans to whip up new millet-based dishes for their customers. The industry officials are expecting sustained deliberations about the goodness of millets to start soon and extend throughout 2023. This will certainly have a positive rub-off effect on the demand for millet-based dishes, hotel and food company officials told IANS. "Now nobody can ignore millets. The focus for food product companies will be on how to milletise their products," S. Murugan Narayanaswamy, CEO, of Southern Health Foods P Ltd makes Manna brand food items. The Manna brand which gained prominence with cricketer Ashwin Ravichandran as brand ambassador has millet-based idli/dosa/upma/poha/kichadi/Pongal and rava dosa mixes. Generally, millets are small-grained, annual, warm-weather cereals belonging to the grass family. They are highly tolerant of drought and other extreme weather conditions and have a similar nutrient content to other major cereals. Mayank Kulshreshtha, Area Executive Chef of Southern Region, ITC Hotels &amp; Executive Chef of ITC Grand Chola told IANS. The millets commonly grown in India include Jowar (sorghum), Bajra (<keyword id="2136819" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pearl-millet" source="Orion">pearl millet</keyword>), ragi (finger <keyword id="9463" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="millet" source="Orion">millet</keyword>), Jhangora (barnyard millet), Barri (Proso or common millet), Kangni (foxtail/ Italian millet), Kodra (Kodo millet) and others, he said. The year 2023 will be a turnaround year with more consumers and companies opting for millets. The Atta product categories will see new offerings like oats atta, multigrain atta, nutrition bars and ready-to-cook packs. "Sales of millet-based products are expected to go up by 2.5 times. This is due to the creation of awareness about millets by the central and state governments, food companies promoting their products and the emergence of new categories based on millets," Narayanaswamy added. According to him, millet-based health drinks, breakfast cereals and noodles will grow. The breakfast cereals will turn into multigrain products with millets. While Southern Health is mulling an entry into the millet-noodles segment, the existing player the Mumbai-based Satvika Bio-Foods Private Ltd is expecting higher sales volumes within and outside India. "We have started exporting to Australia and the US. The big food products companies can no longer avoid the millet segment. And their entry will grow the market," Vinod Kumar, Founder and CEO of Satvika Bio-Foods told IANS. Terming noodles as a pan-India food now, Kumar said the overall noodles market size is about Rs 15,000 crore. Within that, the Atta noodles segment will be about Rs 500 crore. Though the Atta noodles segment is growing fast it will take a long time to grow to the size of the maida noodles market. Given this, the millet noodles segment is small but will log accelerated growth starting in 2023, Kumar said. Like millet noodles, there is millet pasta from Wholsum Foods under the brand Slurrp Farm. On the star hotels side, the 650-room meta ITC Grand Chola and beach resort Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa seems to have the first mover advantage having readied their special millet offerings to their guests. "Next year, we will have a focussed millet programme at our restaurants. We have incorporated millets in European dishes," Kulshreshtha of ITC Hotels said. According to him, the ITC Hotels as a group has enhanced millet offerings across the country. On October 14, ITC Hotels launched its millets programme on the Pavilion buffets. "At our buffet restaurants, we will encourage our guests to try out new millet-based dishes highlighting the health benefits. For example, the Kambu Koozh or Pearl Millet Porridge is good for the gut. Small portions will be served for the guests to taste," Devakumar said. As 51 per cent of the leisure guests come with their families, Devakumar said the children can also be encouraged to have millet-based food items. However, the June deficit has had an effect on kharif acreage sowing which is around 9% lower than what it was last year. The sowing seen in rice and pulses saw the weakest progress — shrinking by almost a quarter. “Within pulses, lower acreage of Arhar (Pigeon pea) and Urad (Black lentil) was noted for the same period. Even the sown area of oilseeds, cotton and Jute and Mesta have fallen sharply,” say economists at Bank of Baroda. Economists at HDFC say that uneven distribution of rainfall is the reason for the blip in sowing. “This could be due to weak rainfall progress in major rice and tur producing states. Looking ahead, as the majority of the season’s sowing takes place in July, rainfall progress during the month would be crucial,” say economists at HDFC. Eastern belt states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and in Central (Maharashtra) and Southern region of Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala have received deficient rainfall. Then there is the El Nino effect which might impact the entire monsoon season. On the other hand, signaling a bounty year for millets, sowing seen in bajra or pearl millet was much more than that of last year. Jowar or sorghum also saw higher sowing, along with coarse cereals – and a marginal growth in sugarcane. The year of 2023 has been declared the year of millets by United Nations, and apart from the Union Budget push, most state governments like Chattisgarh and Odisha are providing incentives to farmers an effect on food prices, and the prices of vegetables like tomato, chillies and ginger rose sharply in the past few days, in addition to milk inflation which continues to be high. Tur, wheat and rice are also beginning to inch up. “To reduce the impact of steep increase in <keyword id="506836" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tomato-prices" source="Orion">tomato prices</keyword>, some state governments like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have taken supply related measures. Among cereals, sufficient buffer stock of wheat and rice might offer a cushion and keep a check on prices,” said the HDFC report which expects inflation to average at 5% in the second quarter. Also, in order to encourage pulses production the government has removed the 40% procurement limit on pulses, like Tur, Urad, Masur (red lentil). “We expect the RBI to continue remaining on pause at its August meeting as the central bank’s inflation projections are on the cautious side and already factor in some upside to the inflation prints going forward. Although, if weather conditions turn for the worse and have a material impact on the inflation outlook, rate cut expectations by the RBI could be pushed back further in 2024,” HDFC believes. A recent report by Kotak Institutional Equities says that a weak monsoon in July-August could make this a broad-based upside across various food items. “This may not bode well for market expectations of an early rate cut cycle. We estimate inflation to average around 5% in FY2024 without any significant impact of monsoons and 5.3% in case monsoons were to disappoint and we see a more broad-based pickup in food prices,” Kotak says.

India sows more millets and less rice this kharif season

By Namita Tewari Gumla (Jharkhand), A Jharkhand district known for its extreme poverty and Naxalite insurgency is now witnessing a silent revolution centering around snacks made from a type of millet which can help prevent <keyword id="6378239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malnutrition" source="Orion">malnutrition</keyword>. The new agro-industry coming up in this backwoods district is an initiative of a young bureaucrat Sushant Gaurav who says he would like Gumla to be the Ragi capital of eastern India. Tucked away some 100 km from state capital Ranchi, his work in Gumla has been selected for the Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Public Administration that recognises exemplary work by civil servants across the country. Previously Gumla's economy revolved around rain-fed agriculture with the cultivation of one crop rice. Ragi cultivation was initiated with procurement of high quality seeds through the National Seed Corporation, Deputy Commissioner Sushant Gaurav told PTI in an interview. "From an initial cultivation of Ragi in 1,600 acres, it was increased to 3,600 acres. Net output increased 300 per cent... What helped in the success story is procurement by Sakhi Mandal Samuh (women self help group). "We established a Ragi processing centre which is the first in Jharkhand. Ragi Laddus, Bhujia snacks and flour are being produced which help battle malnutrition and anaemia (as it is rich in protein, calcium and iron)," Gaurav said. Gaurav will receive the award on Friday in the "holistic development through aspirational district programme - overall progress with special focus on saturation approach" category at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. New Delhi, Jan 6 () Agro-chemical firm Crystal Crop Protection Ltd on Monday said it has acquired three insecticide brands from US-based Corteva Agriscience, which will help the company to generate an additional revenue of about Rs 50 crore annually.
The company has seven manufacturing plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Haryana. It posted a net profit of about Rs 130 crore over a turnover of around Rs 1,400 crore during the last financial year.
"We have acquired three premium insecticides brands Dursban, Nurelle-D and Predator brands in India from Corteva Agriscience," Crystal Crop MD Ankur Aggarwal told .
This is Crystal's fifth acquisition in last two years and is part of the company's strategy to diversify product portfolio and widen its market presence, he added.
"This acquisition is a part of Crystal's strategy to add value to its business and ensure growth for all its stakeholders. We believe such strategic acquisitions would improve our competitiveness, further help in diversifying our product portfolio and thus strengthen our market presence across India," Aggarwal said.
Aggarwal said these three brands would give Rs 40-50 crore revenue annually.
Corteva Agriscience is a major American agricultural chemical and seed company. Originally an agricultural unit of DowDuPont, it later became one of the major stand alone agricultural organizations in the world.
While Dursban is a specialty insecticide that offers control of more than 280 pests, Predator is broad-spectrum insecticide for control of pests of cotton and rice.
Nurrelle D offers pest protection to mainly potato, tomato, apple, peach and plum plants.
In 2018, Crystal acquired a specialty chemicals manufacturing facility at Nagpur from Cytec India.
After that it acquired Indian grain sorghum, pearl millet and fodder sorghum seeds business from Syngenta India, followed by the acquisition of four brands namely Furadan, Splendour, Affinity Force and Metcil from FMC India Limited.
Crystal also bought three brands from Syngenta, namely Tilt, Proclaim and Blue Copper.

"In mid-March, when some coronavirus cases were detected in the state and the government ordered closure of malls, swimming pools, gyms, I realised that I should leave for my native place. When malls are shut, what value will I have," he told over phone from his village. He is now busy working at his family farm land, growing wheat, sugarcane and paddy. Asked if he willcome back, Kanhaiya said, "Let's see how the situation unfolds. Even though I have a farm in the village and a house of my own, agriculture is unreliable. Never know what you have sown will remain, it depends on rain. At my shop in Mumbai, I could at least make some savings." He has been missing his stall at Bhuleshwar, which was the hub of wholesale and retail cloth, gold, diamond, steel, plastic and readymade garments. Taxi drivers and low wage workers frequently visited the area, where 'puri bhaji', 'bhel puri', 'vada pav' and 'dosa' were available at prices ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 200. Three khau gullies in Bhuleshwar, streets near the Churchgate station, Flora Fountain in Fort, Bombay Stock Exchange and other areas in south Mumbai used to be packed with food stalls and canteens selling snacks at cheap prices on normal days, but now these areas wear a deserted look. Pappu Singh, another 'paani puri' vendor from Vile Parle area, also left for his native village Khedlakhurd in Dausa district of Rajasthan amid the lockdown. "I used to earn Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 every month and lived at a rented room in Vile Parle with my sons. I came back when business started suffering," he told over phone. "I am penniless since the last two months. There is no water or work in my village. I have been surviving on roti- mirchi (flat bread and chilly)," he said. "There is nothing in my farm. I will sow bajra (pearl millet) if there is good rain. I am waiting for the situation to normalise so that I can resume work," he added. His son Narender singh, who works at a 'bhel puri' shop in Vile Parle, however, did not leave Mumbai as he felt the lockdown will not prolong. "I and seven workers are staying at the 'bhel puri' shop and we are getting food. The owner hails from our village," Narender said. His employer Sandeep Sharma, owner of the 'Sharma Bhelpuri' outlet in Vile Parle, said his business is affected by this unprecedented crisis. "My 16 employees were mostly from my native place in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Some from UP have left and those who stayed back are living in my shop and godown. They are my family, so it is my duty to look after them in such harsh times," Sharma said. He also feels it is time to reinvent the business model once the COVID-19 crisis ends. "We are thinking of starting 'sev puri' and 'paani puri' takeaways and supply our 'chutneys' hygienically packed to general stores which are open," Sharma said. "Business is anyways low during monsoon. I don't think people will prefer eating'bhel puri' and 'paani puri' when normalcy returns. They will be scared to eat outside and would rather spend on more important things in life," he added. Santosh Sawant, a 'vada pav' stall owner in suburban Santacruz, said business owners like him are now confused about their future. "When my business shut two months ago, I looked after my staff members who were staying in two rooms that I own. I gave them moneyand food. But, on May 15, they left for their native places without informing me. They were my employees for last 15 to 20 years and I can't start my business again without them," he said. But, Sawant is hopeful that his employees will return as he used to acknowledge their hard work. "My focus has always been on quality food and my customers know it. I am sure when things normalise, my business will resume. But I am working on how to take it forward. I am thinking of taking home delivery orders right now," he said. Sagar, whose mother used to supply tiffins to staff at the Vidhan Bhavan, secretariat and the Shipping Corporation of India in south Mumbai, said his business was already down after his father died last year and mother became ill. Since the lockdown, their tiffin service has completely shut down. Sagar said his mother used to sit on the footpath opposite the secretariat in the afternoon to get more customers who would stop by for a quick lunch of Malvani food. "Since our business closed, I even tried taking up other jobs, but didn't have much luck after everything came to a standstill due to the lockdown," he said. Franchise broker Pravin Jagtap said nearly five lakh people worked in the micro-business sector of fast food and takeaway joints, which has been badly hit by the lockdown. A lot of youngsters had joined the business before the COVID-19 crisis took it all away. "Those who have paid the one-time franchise fees and have taken loan will not be able to pay the shop rent and bank dues due to business losses. After the situation normalises, these shops will have to be careful about health and hygiene issues to get customers back," he said. Rents will also be unaffordable in future and prices will go up due to inflation, he claimed. "Mumbaikars have already forgotten the habit of eating out," Jagtap said. Writer and culinary expert Ajit Joshi said," The street food of Mumbai, that found a place in Bollywood films, international documentariesand food shows, is going to be missed." "There will be a drop in production of at least 10% in the rice crop," he said. Production of cotton and pearl millets may also get affected due to poor rain in the state.
