<ul class="summary-list"><li>Netflix's "Fool Me Once" is the streamer's latest series based on a Harlan Coben book.</li><li>The show follows a woman who sees her supposedly dead husband on a nanny cam.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-upcoming-shows-coming-to-netflix-2024">Netflix's "Fool Me Once"</a> is based on the book of the same name by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-new-addictive-drama-series-safe-starring-michael-c-hall-2018-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Harlan Coben</a>, and it follows Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan), a grieving widow who sees her dead husband on a nanny cam inside her house.</p><p>The eight-episode miniseries, which premiered on Monday, sees Maya tackle her controversial military history while investigating her wealthy husband's shady past in a sprawling mystery.</p><p>Keegan, best known for her "Downton Abbey" and "Our Girl" roles, is joined by a few well-known British stars, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/the-hobbit-then-and-now-2018-12">"The Hobbit" star Richard Armitage</a> as Maya's late husband, Joe Burkett, and "Absolutely Fabulous" icon <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/prince-charles-friend-joanna-lumley-says-the-crown-made-up-2021-12">Joanna Lumley</a> as Joe's mother, Judith Burkett.</p><p>Although Coben's book is set in New Jersey, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.njspotlightnews.org/video/harlan-coben-on-growing-up-in-new-jersey-and-his-friendship-with-chris-christie/">where the author grew up</a>, the Netflix series is set in the UK.</p><p>"Fool Me Once" mainly takes place in and about the fictional town of Winherst. But <a target="_blank" href="https://www.filminginengland.co.uk/fool-me-once-the-story-behind-the-locations-from-the-new-year-hit-of-2024/">Manchester, Salford, Oldham, and other locations in Cheshire</a> were used as the backdrop for all those juicy plot twists.</p><p>One of the locations Maya frequently visits is the Farmwood mansion, owned by her mother-in-law, Judith. Arley Hall in Cheshire was used as the wealthy matriarch's home.</p><p>Fans of "Peaky Blinders" might recognize the huge house as the same one owned by gangster Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in the BBC period crime drama.</p><p>Maya also has a pretty big house where much of the drama occurs. Producer Jessica Taylor told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/netflix-fool-once-filmed-manchester-28331070"><u>Manchester Evening News</u></a> they used a house in the small town of Alderley Edge in Cheshire for Maya's home.</p><p>Taylor also explained that they had to build a gun cabinet into the house because the story required it.</p><p>"We took over a residential house for three weeks, and this is where you see the nanny cam scene, as well as discussing stuff with her best friend Shane," she said. "There is also a gun room at her property, but naturally we had to build this into the house as we don't tend to have those in this country."</p><p>One of the most important scenes is the moment Joe gets gunned down while walking in a park at night with Maya. The producers used Oldham's Alexandra Park as the location for the dramatic moment.</p><p>As Joe's past gets put under the microscope, Maya visits his old private school to figure out what happened to him and his friends when they were younger. These scenes were shot at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boltonschool.org/"><u>Bolton School</u></a> at weekends and during school holidays.</p>

Everything coming to &mdash; and leaving &mdash; Netflix in June

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Netflix launched its cheaper ad-supported plan last month.</li><li>It has 245 fewer movies and 118 fewer TV shows than the streamer's ad-free plans in the US.</li></ul><p>Last month, Netflix did something that it had resisted for years: It <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-netflix-with-ads-plan-is-like-2022-11">launched an ad-supported plan</a>.</p><p>The cheaper option, called "Basic with Ads," is $6.99 per month, compared to its more expensive ad-free memberships that range from $9.99 to $19.99 a month.</p><p>But it does come with limits, including notably fewer movies and TV shows than ad-free plans.</p><p>Netflix noted as much when it announced the ad plan, saying that "a limited number of movies and TV shows won't be available due to licensing restrictions."</p><p><a href="https://reelgood.com/">Reelgood</a>, a streaming search engine and guide, analyzed the catalog sizes of the ad-free tiers and the new ad-supported tier in the US.</p><p>It found that as of December 13, Netflix's ad plan has 245 fewer movies than the other plans in the US and 118 fewer TV shows. </p><div type="image" title="netflix ad plan charts" height="1458" width="1500" msid="96260993" hostid="261"></div><p>In a statement to Insider, Netflix reiterated that a limited number of titles are unavailable due to licensing restrictions. It added that it is "working on" making them available.</p><p>"Members on the Basic with Ads plan have access to almost all our TV and movies," a Netflix spokesperson said.</p><p>Reelgood also looked at which movies and shows are missing from the ad-supported tier. </p><p>The top three movies missing from the ad-supported tier, based on Reelgood's popularity scores, were "Bullet Train," "Where the Crawdads Sing," and "Uncharted." The scores take into account critic and audience scores from IMDb and other "quality markers."</p><p>Notably, all three of these were released by Sony this year and moved to Netflix after their theatrical runs as part of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-gets-streaming-rights-to-sony-spider-man-movies-2021-4">a deal between the two companies</a>. It appears Netflix and Sony have yet to reach an agreement on including ads in the movies.</p><p>"Bullet Train" was Netflix's most popular movie for several days after it debuted on the service earlier this month. On Thursday, it was still No. 2, according to Netflix's own daily rankings.</p><p>The top three TV shows missing from the ad plan, based on Reelgood scores, were "The Walking Dead," "Peaky Blinders," and "The Last Kingdom." While "Peaky Blinders" and "The Last Kingdom" are distributed exclusively by Netflix in the US, they're produced by other companies.</p><p>US subscribers to the ad-supported plan still get over 3,700 movies and more than 2,200 TV shows. It's the latest British series to be streamed outside of the UK by Netflix, which regularly works with international production companies to acquire global distribution rights, according to <a href="https://deadline.com/2018/09/netflix-picks-up-bbc-drama-series-bodyguard-1202466086/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a>, which first reported the "Bodyguard" deal in September.</span></p><p><span>Other British shows that Netflix has acquired include <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-frankenstein-chronicles-a-binge-worthy-cult-hit-from-the-uk-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cult hit "The Frankenstein Chronicles,"</a> which stars another former "Game of Thrones" actor, Sean Bean; "Collateral," starring Carey Mulligan; "Wanderlust," starring Toni Collette; and "The End of the F---ing World," which Netflix recently renewed for a second season.</span></p><p><span>It's a strategy that has worked in both Netflix and UK networks' favor, as Netflix is able to introduce the shows to a wider audience. Some series don't manage to grab audiences in the UK, but once streamed on Netflix, shows like BBC's "The Last Kingdom" found success. Its third season debuts November 19.</span></p><p><span>"The first season didn't break through on BBC America, but it did on Netflix in the US," executive producer Gareth Neame told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/apr/17/netflixs-new-world-order-a-streaming-giant-on-the-brink-of-global-domination" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Guardian</a> in April. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>CBS and Viacom are already plotting their next acquisition, execs at the two companies suggested on a call this week. </li><li>Business Insider talked to M&amp;A experts about what <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword>, <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>, and other companies would make the best potential targets and why.</li><li>ViacomCBS, as the combined company is to be called, wants the scale to compete with Disney, Comcast, and Netflix, which makes unscripted TV giant Discovery a frontrunner.</li><li>But the company could also pursue a handful of smaller deals for media franchises or ad-tech companies to bolster its portfolio of brands and advertising tools.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></li></ul><p>CBS and Viacom have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cbs-viacom-agree-to-merger-details-revenue-2019-8">agreed to tie the knot</a> and are already plotting their next merger.</p><p>The media outfits say they'll be stronger together financially, paving the way for future deal making - with no  further speculation hanging over the companies about whether they themselves will recombine.</p><p>"One of the other big things this deal does is take a big uncertainty off the company," Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, who will be CEO of the combined ViacomCBS if the deal goes through, told analysts on a conference call Tuesday. "We will be very well positioned to exploit those opportunities," he said, adding that both companies have been, and will continue, looking for opportunities.</p><p>Media strategists and analysts told Business Insider that ViacomCBS doesn't need to jump into another merger right away, though the companies seem to want to. Bakish summed up his ambitions on the call.</p><p>"Simply put, the combined company will be one of only a few with the breadth and depth of content and platforms and the global reach to shape the future of the industry," Bakish said.</p><p>ViacomCBS is sizing up content and production assets to reach the scale required to challenge media giants like Netflix, Disney, and Comcast. The company is also in a bit of a time crunch to get these deals done to generate more income to bid on NFL rights against deep-pocketed rivals like tech company Amazon, analysts say. </p><p>Shari Redstone, president of National Amusements, which has a controlling stake in both CBS and Viacom, has been shopping for deals with companies like Sony Pictures Entertainment and TV company Discovery Communications, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/all/if-cbs-viacom-reunite-more-mergers-could-be-way-n1036476">NBC News previously reported</a>.</p><p>There are few directions that ViacomCBS could go in with its next acquisition, the experts said. It could make a big deal for a company like Discovery, or snap up a handful of smaller companies in key growth areas like content production and ad-tech.</p><h2>Scale</h2><p>If scale is the name of the game, ViacomCBS will be looking for other media companies with robust production capabilities, popular franchises, and international footholds that complement its own breadth of brands and IP.</p><p>CBS has an older crowd through its broadcast network and sports and news channels, and Viacom targets kids with Nickelodeon, and teens through adults with myriad cable networks like Comedy Central, MTV, and BET.</p><p>Together, the two companies have a combined enterprise value of about $48 million. But they'd still be dwarfed by Disney, worth $313 billion; Comcast, worth $308 billion; and Netflix, worth $145 billion.</p><p>In addition to Sony and Discovery, execs at CBS and Viacom have mulled the idea of acquiring Starz, or its parent company Lions Gate, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/cbs-viacom-merger-opens-door-to-more-deals-11565726296">The Wall Street Journal</a> reported. Movie studio MGM and cable programmer AMC Networks have also been floated in news reports as possible targets. Analysts Business Insider spoke with mentioned Fox, as well as Univision, which is <a href="https://variety.com/2019/biz/news/univision-for-sale-strategic-review-spanish-language-1203259599/">seeking a buyer</a>.</p><p>Of this group, unscripted TV giant Discovery seems to be the best fit, according to the experts.</p><p>Discovery would offer ViacomCBS three things: greater international presence, since Discovery has a variety of international TV channels, including Eurosport; content assets and access to non-fiction talent, like Chip and Joanna Gaines of "Fixer Upper" fame, and its arsenal of Food Network stars; and enough cable-TV networks to form an advertising juggernaut.</p><p>"CBS-Viacom with Discovery would make them the de facto gorilla in terms of ad sales in the pay-TV universe," Mary Ann Halford, a senior advisor at OC&amp;C Strategy Consultants, told Business Insider. "They would be the market leader in that area."</p><p>Adding more cable channels exposes ViacomCBS to more risk from cord-cutting. But the company could also leverage its free ad-supported TV service Pluto TV, as Viacom is doing now.</p><h2>All about that brand</h2><p>But if the priority is to build scripted production capabilities and content assets to compete with Netflix and Disney (and sell programming to them), then Sony or Lions Gate would be better bets.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The question that's behind this merger and will be behind subsequent moves is: Do we have a pipeline of content that is attractive and defendable?" Stephen Beck, cofounder and managing partner of management consultancy cg42, said. "And then, can we monetize it, and to what extent?"</span></p><p>Sony has brands like the Spider-Man franchise and a strong international presence. Lions Gate, meanwhile, has content assets like the "Hunger Games" franchise, and its subsidiary Starz could be used to bolster ViacomCBS' premium-TV service Showtime.</p><p>The key is finding content assets that still have a lot of runway. </p><p>"They're going to pay a premium for content that is, 1. marquee enough to hold consumers' attention and 2. which is almost more important, provides a platform for CBS to able to expand the content pool," Greg Portell, a lead partner with the global management consultancy AT Kearney, said.</p><p>Think Star Wars before Disney bought Lucasfilm. It was still a huge cultural phenomenon, but there was plenty of opportunity to revive the franchise for a new generation, broaden the universe with TV shows and spin-off films, sell toys and video games, and, ultimately, use Star Wars as a launch pad for Disney's streaming services, as Disney is doing now by making "The Mandalorian" the first original series to hit Disney Plus.</p><p>That could make movie studio MGM appealing at the right price. "<span style="font-weight: 400;">The only reason to buy MGM is to get the Bond franchise," Halford of OC&amp;C said.</span></p><h2>Think like a tech company</h2><p>ViacomCBS doesn't need to acquire a major media company to get the brands, IP, and relationships with top talent it's after. But to get around that, it'd have to start thinking like a tech company.</p><p>Like Netflix before it, ViacomCBS could make a handful of smaller deals with production companies and media franchises to shore up its portfolio.</p><p>Netflix has grown its assets, not by buying other media companies, but by signing long-term deals with top showrunners like Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, and "Game of Thrones" creators <span>David </span>Benioff<span> and D.B. </span>Weiss. It's also bought a few small production companies with valuable IP, including comic-book creator Mark Millar's MillarWorld and <a href="https://media.netflix.com/en/press-releases/netflix-acquires-the-critically-and-fan-acclaimed-storybots-property-and-commits-to-bringing-educational-content-to-kids-and-families-around-the-world">kid's media franchise</a> Storybots.</p><p>Viacom <a href="https://deadline.com/2019/08/viacom-to-acquire-garfield-1202662457/">recently acquired</a> the "Garfield" kids franchise, which suggests CEO Bakish is open to that thinking.</p><p>Endemol Shine, the Dutch-based media company behind productions like "Big Brother," and dramas like "Peaky Blinders" and "Black Mirror," is reportedly on the market, among other smaller studios in Europe.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"At the end of the day what you want to do is build your IP," Naveen Sharma, analyst at S&amp;P Global, said. "And it wouldn't blow up their balance sheet."</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></p><h2>Another ad-tech </h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Execs of the future ViacomCBS also called out ad-targeting as one of the three key areas of growth for the combined company. As Halford said, advertising could become even more important if ViacomCBS doubles down on pay-TV channels through a deal with Discovery. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">ViacomCBS could pursue an ad-tech company to sure up its advertising tools, just as AT&amp;T followed up its deal with Time Warner by buying AppNexus.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"As pressure on CPMs and ad revenue continues to increase, just having size and scale isn't necessarily going to help CBS and Viacom," Portell said. "They're going to need some kind of secret sauce that offers advertisers more than just the eyeballs."</span></p><h2>The Vice question</h2><p>Another potential target floated in media coverage has been Vice, which is reportedly eager to find a buyer. None of the strategists or analysts that Business Insider spoke with were clear on what the upside of a deal with the digital media company would be for ViacomCBS.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The question with Vice is how much revenue and profit will it add to the bottom line of a potential acquirer?" Portell explained. "That's always been debatable. If you're an established media player you're always being criticized because you're not creative enough and can't keep up with the Vices and BuzzFeeds, but as soon as you buy that company, your scorecard goes back to economics of the deal. Those acquisitions very rarely have paid off."</span></p><p><a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/08/nancy-dubucand-big-investor-hoping-for-an-exit-strategy-cbs-viacom">Vanity Fair also reported</a> that Viacom's Bakish has no interest in acquiring Vice, which could squash its deal potential now that Bakish will be leading the combined company.</p><h2><span style="color: #000000;">Other considerations</span></h2><p>There are other considerations that will affect future deals with ViacomCBS, including whether the companies are  for sale, and the competition to buy them.</p><p>Sony execs haven't said publicly whether they'd consider selling Sony Pictures, but <a href="https://nypost.com/2019/04/08/hedgie-to-pitch-sony-on-selling-off-entertainment-division/">The New York Post reported</a> that Amazon may also be interested in the movie and TV studio. Meanwhile, Lions Gate and Univision, which has touted its Hispanic audience, are actively courting buyers.</p><p>Lions Gate, Starz, and Discovery come with another caveat: industry insiders suspect investor John Malone, which has <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2018-john-malone/">stakes in all three companies</a>, will want some kind of active involvement, such as a seat on the board of the merged company, if a deal is done. M&A experts break down what Viacom and CBS could buy next, from ad-tech to James Bond

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>25 years ago, ABC premiered a cop show called "NYPD Blue," and a bunch of advertisers, TV stations, and pro-family groups freaked out.</strong></li><li><strong>That's because the show featured rough language, nudity, and serious topics not common to commercial, broadcast TV at the time.</strong></li><li><strong>Today, 'NYPD Blue' looks rather tame, and advertisers find their ads next to all sorts of far racier content without batting an eyelash.</strong></li><li><strong>But the show's complicated lead character, Andy Sipowicz, continues to influence TV.</strong></li></ul><p><br>A few weeks ago, I started watching the new <a href="https://www.sltrib.com/artsliving/tv/2017/11/17/kevin-costners-sweeping-new-tv-series-is-spending-big-bucks-in-utah/">Kevin Costner series "Yellowstone.</a>" It's decent show. It wants to be prestige TV, but comes off more like a modern version of "Dallas" or "Dynasty."</br></p><p>Costner's character is a rich ranch owner, has a big dysfunctional family, and is kind of good (he's a grandpa), but also really bad (his ranch hands kill people).</p><p>One thing that stood out early on is there are loads of bad words, f-bombs and all, and a fair amount of nudity - all brought to you by Ram trucks, a major advertiser.</p><p>I've also just started watching Lifetime's "<a href="https://www.mylifetime.com/shows/you">You</a>" (don't judge because it's awesome). It's about a guy (the same actor who played Dan on "Gossip Girl") who stalks a love interest, so you're not exactly signing up for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hallmark-channel-christmas-movies-with-lacy-chabert-candace-cameron-bure-2017-10">Hallmark movie</a>.</p><p>Just a few minutes into the first episode, the characters are saying and doing all sorts of naughty things that in a different time would be absolutely shocking on commercial TV.</p><p>Yet right after a scene of intense stalking and public masturbation, there was an ad for a bunch of great appetizer specials at Applebee's. Talk about feeling <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyvgD0vJgEQ">good in the neighborhood.</a></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>But it was Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz, who broke out, and changed TV. In the pilot, Andy grabs his crotch and shouts, "<a href="https://www.tvinsider.com/678598/steven-bochco-favorite-nypd-blue-moments/">ipso this, you pissy little bitch</a>" at a female district attorney. No one knew what that meant, but it was definitely adult.</span></p><p><span>Sipowicz also boozed a ton, cavorted with prostitutes, might have been mildly racist, and was definitely not afraid to cross the line into police brutality territory. Yet he also had a heart of gold.</span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><span>You can trace a direct line from Sipowicz to Walter White, or anyone from"The Shield" or "Peaky Blinders" - even Don Draper. To be fair, most of these envelope-pushing shows ran on cable, which doesn't have to deal with the Federal Communications Commission, which still regulates what is broadcast over the air (and cares about stuff like Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfunctions, even more than advertisers seem to).</span></p><p><span>But the point is, modern prestige TV, or even cheese TV, is a lot rougher around the edges than it used to be.</span></p><p><span>In terms of the peak 1990s - "I can't believe that was just on TV" - it's hard not to think of a <a href="http://www.spokesman.com/stories/1995/jan/22/nypd-blue-star-is-unlikely-sex-symbol-dennis/">1995 "NYPD Blue" episode </a>featuring Sipowicz in the shower with the DA he previously cursed out. If you like your TV shows edgy, you can thank<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/03/bracket-of-the-day-best-butt/359665/"> Sipowicz's butt.</a></span></p><p><span>Back then, advertisers were surely holding their breath and waiting for the angry calls.
