Now, signs have emerged that they're not yet done with generative AI mania.As September rolled into October, some of the most significant investment areas in AI received fresh votes of confidence — be it in the chip space, the large language model arena, and devices. "Are we likely to see a bear market in the next two years for large-cap growth? Yeah."Arnott's comments came as the S&amp;P 500 — a large-cap index dominated by mega-cap growth firms known as the Magnificent Seven — jumped 5% within a week following the election of Donald Trump, closing above 6,000 for the first time. The explosive move was the latest advance in a torrid 66% rally that's lasted more than two years.A robust economy and excitement about artificial intelligence and business-friendly policies from the future Trump administration have propelled the market to all-time highs. But Arnott believes AI optimism, which has driven the lion's share of the rally, is already fully priced in.Those high expectations are visible in the S&amp;P 500's Shiller cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio, Arnott said, which sits at levels that rival the dot-com bubble peak. "Well, Intel is teetering perilously close to irrelevance, and Nvidia wasn't on anyone's radar screen five years ago. So disruptors get disrupted."There's also the possibility that the pace of AI adoption is slower than expected, Arnott said. He said internet use in 2005 wasn't all that different from its use in 2000, but that today, things have completely changed. A longer timeline may play out for AI as well, he said.Arnott joins a long list of strategists and money managers who have recently expressed lackluster outlooks about forward return prospects, given the state of stock valuations.Goldman Sachs' Chief US Equity Strategist <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sp500-outlook-next-decade-forecast-david-kostin-goldman-stocks-strategist-2024-11">David Kostin</a> made waves in October when he said the S&amp;P 500 would deliver 3% annualized returns over the next 10 years. Asset prices can trade at the wrong price and they can trade at the wrong price for a long period of time," Einhorn said. "I just observe that it's a really expensive market that if you buy and hold for a very long period of time, I doubt that this is a great — you'll look back and say this was a great entry point of all of the entry points that you could have."The way Arnott sees things, that better entry point could come in the next couple of years.

The answer comes down to sentiment — so much positive news for so long that it has become the new normal," Hayes said.He added: "The risk is that the lack of risk aversion would leave investors exposed to a degree of sustained macro deterioration yet to be experienced since the bull got underway."Hayes isn't calling for an imminent peak in the stock market, especially with falling interest rates historically acting as a tailwind for stock prices, but he's aware that it could happen."The last two secular bulls lasted 24 years (1942 - 1966) and 18 years (1982 - 2000). But with the secular bull mature, we're watching out for signs that it may be at risk," Hayes said.The first warning sign of a near-term peak in the stock market is worsening breadth among the underlying issues of the US stock market.In other words, if only a handful of companies drive the stock market higher, that would be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-rally-broadens-small-caps-another-win-for-bulls-2024-7">bad sign,</a> as it was at the secular top in 2000.Investors don't have to worry about that signal flashing just yet, with recent data showing a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/rare-bull-signal-perfect-track-record-just-flashed-stock-market-2024-9">surge in market breadth.</a>Extreme valuations would be another warning sign to watch for, according to Hayes, who added that high valuations price in a perfect macro environment, and if something goes wrong, those valuations can fall apart rather quickly."Expensive valuations appear justified when earnings growth is coming through, but that also leaves the market vulnerable when earnings turn lower," Hayes said.Long-term peaks in the stock market also typically occur when earnings growth and economic growth hit extreme levels, as the other side of that boom is typically a swift deceleration in growth.The secular stock market peaks of 1929, 1966, and 2000 all coincided with a peak in S&amp;P 500 earnings growth, "after which prices dropped on the growing realization that the valuations were not justified," Hayes said.While valuations and earnings growth are currently at high levels, they could have more room to grow, according to the note."The current level of earnings growth has yet to reach its levels at the peaks in 1929 and 2000 but has already closed in on its levels of 1966," Hayes said.He added: "For a downturn in earnings growth, we would expect to see a downturn in economic growth."Finally, Hayes said investors should keep an eye on bond yields and commodities, as they will reflect a potential rebound in inflation. And a rebound in inflation, coupled with rising interest rates, would be an unwelcome warning sign for the current bull rally in stocks."If that would start to change with a severe cyclical bear, the secular bear warnings would strengthen, and we would be likely to see reversals from extremes in valuations, earnings growth, and economic performance," Hayes concluded.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bill Smead warns of a stock market bubble made worse by the market's recent surge.</li><li>Smead compares current market conditions to past bubbles, citing high equity ownership.</li></ul>When Bill Smead took his first job as a broker at Drexel Burnham Lambert in 1980, his dad asked him to place a trade that would benefit from a Ronald Reagan win later that year.So he did, and after Reagan won, the investment jumped the day the results were announced — a continuation of the 29% rally that had endured since March of that year.Unfortunately for his father, however, that was as good as the returns were for the next 18 months.From November 1980 to July 1982, stocks entered a bear market, dragging the S&amp;P 500 down 27% as a recession gripped the US economy. That was despite the market's trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio sitting at a cheap 7.5 in 1980 versus a more expensive 24 today.While no two market environments are the same, Smead — the founder of Smead Capital Management — cites the example as a cautionary tale to investors who have eagerly jumped into stocks following the election of Donald Trump to a second term earlier this week.Just like Reagan, Trump touts a regulation-slashing, tax-cutting agenda that should boost the market in theory. But other factors are at play.Smead warns market conditions are setting the market up for dismal returns going forward, and that stocks are in a bubble only made more extreme by the so-called 'Trump bump' this week, which saw the Dow jump 3.5% in a day."You've got an expensive market that just exacerbated itself," Smead told Business Insider."It's a disaster waiting to happen," he continued. "We have put the icing on the financial euphoria cake and lit the candle on top."There is plenty of evidence that the market is historically expensive.For instance, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-why-sp500-decade-weak-returns-goldman-jpmorgan-2024-11">Goldman Sachs said last month</a> that current levels of the Shiller cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio (the dark blue line in the chart below) — rivaling prior bubbles — lead them to believe that the S&amp;P 500 will deliver 3% annualized returns over the next 10 years. However, the intense solar exposure at the equator causes the frost to dissipate rapidly each morning, explaining its transient nature. The frost layer itself is extraordinarily thin, just 10 micrometres thick, reflecting Mars' limited atmospheric water vapour. In terms of volume, the frost could cover about 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools if harvested. Though this seems substantial, it's a minuscule quantity compared to Mars’ total surface area. Nonetheless, it represents a potential resource for future astronauts, who could use it for drinking water or converting it into rocket fuel. This discovery not only enhances our understanding of Mars' current water cycle, but also offers clues about its past climate and potential habitability. By refining our knowledge of Martian weather patterns, we can better prepare for future exploration and continue unravelling the mysteries of the Red Planet. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has promised that AI will revolutionize the company's ad services.</li><li>But Meta's use of AI for moderating ads may already be putting the company in hot water.</li></ul>During July's earnings call, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg">Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg</a> laid out a vision for his company's valuable ad services once they are further bolstered by artificial intelligence."In the coming years," he said, "AI will be able to generate creative for advertisers as well and will also be able to personalize it as people see it."But as the trillion-dollar company hopes to revolutionize its ad tech, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-earnings-mark-zuckerberg-ai-spending-tech-investors-stock-2024-4">Meta's usage of AI</a> may already have put the company in the hot seat.On Thursday, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Republican Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan and Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor of Florida, sent a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://walberg.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/walberg.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/Congressional%20Letter%20to%20Meta%20-%20Illicit%20Drug%20Advertising.pdf">letter</a> to Zuckerberg demanding the CEO answer questions about Meta's advertising services.The letter comes in light of a March <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/u-s-is-investigating-meta-for-role-in-drug-sales-574944cb?mod=Searchresults_pos4&amp;page=1">Wall Street Journal</a> report that revealed how federal prosecutors are probing the company for its role in the illicit sale of drugs on its platforms."Meta appears to have continued to shirk its social responsibility and defy its own community guidelines," the letter said. "Protecting users online, especially children and teenagers, is one of our top priorities. We are continuously concerned that Meta is not up to the task and this dereliction of duty needs to be addressed."Zuckerberg already faced senators who grilled the CEO about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-ceos-face-senate-in-hearing-over-child-sexual-exploitation-2024-1">safety measures for children</a> who use Meta's social media sites. During the senate hearing, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-faced-families-online-child-safety-senate-hearing-2024-1">Zuckerberg stood up and apologized</a> to families who felt that social media use harmed their kids.In July, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.techtransparencyproject.org/articles/meta-allows-drug-ads-selling-everything-from-opioids-to-cocaine">Tech Transparency Project</a>, a nonprofit watchdog group, reported that Meta continued to make money from hundreds of ads that promoted the sale of illegal or recreational drugs, including cocaine and opioids, which Meta prohibits in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://transparency.meta.com/policies/ad-standards/">policy</a> regarding ads."Many of the ads made no secret of their intentions, showing photos of prescription drug bottles, piles of pills and powders, or bricks of cocaine, and encouraging users to place orders," the watchdog group wrote."Our systems are designed to proactively detect and enforce against violating content, and we reject hundreds of thousands of ads for violating our drug policies," a Meta spokesperson told Business Insider, reiterating a statement shared with the Journal. "We continue to invest resources and further improve our enforcement on this kind of content. Our hearts go out to those suffering from the tragic consequences of this epidemic — it requires all of us to work together to stop it."The spokesperson did not address how Meta uses AI to moderate ads.<h2 id="ba53f796-1957-4bf8-ad47-88fce5b82bce">Ads poke holes in Meta's AI system</h2>The exact processes for how Meta approves and moderates ads are not public information.What is known is that the company, in part, relies on artificial intelligence to screen content, as reported by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/meta-cocaine-opioids-ads-dea8e0fc">the Journal</a>. The outlet reported that using photos to display the drugs may allow the ads to slip past Meta's moderation system.Here's what <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.facebook.com/business/help/204798856225114?id=649869995454285">Meta</a> has revealed about its "ad review system":The company also said it's continuously working to automate the review process further to rely less on humans.But the revelation of ads promoting drugs on Meta's platforms shows how policy-violating content can still slip through its automated system, even while Zuckerberg paints a picture of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-adds-new-generative-ai-to-advertising-tools-details-2024-5">sophisticated ad service</a> that promises improved targeting and creates content for advertisers with generative AI.<h2 id="9e49470f-e2c3-4a18-991f-08d1db0db08d">Meta's bumpy AI rollout</h2>Meta has experienced a bumpy rollout of its AI-powered services outside ad tech.Less than a year after Meta introduced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-chatbots-assistants-tom-brady-mr-beast-kendall-jenner-2023-9">celebrity AI assistants</a>, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-scraps-kendall-jenner-tom-brady-celebrity-ai-chatbots-2024-8">discontinued the product</a> and focused on allowing users to create their own AI bots.Meta also continues to work out kinks for Meta AI, the company's chatbot and AI assistant, which has been shown to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/we-asked-ai-chatbots-about-trump-shooting-chatgpt-meta-claude-2024-7">hallucinate answers</a> or, with BI's Rob Price, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-tells-strangers-it-owns-my-phone-number-whatsapp-2024-8">act like a user and hand out his phone number</a> to strangers.The technical and ethical issues that pervade AI products — not just Meta's — concern many top US companies.A survey by Arize AI, which conducts research around AI technology, showed that 56% of Fortune 500 companies view AI as a "risk factor," <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ft.com/content/5ee96d38-f55b-4e8a-b5c1-e58ce3d4111f">The Financial Times</a> reported.Sifting by industry, 86% of technology groups, including Salesforce, said that AI presents a business risk, according to the report.Those concerns, however, conflict with tech companies' evident push to implement AI into every corner of their products, even as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-hype-train-profits-valuations-startups-google-openai-2024-7">path toward profitability also remains murky</a>."There are significant risks involved in developing and deploying AI," Meta said in a 2023 annual report, "and there can be no assurance that the usage of AI will enhance our products or services or be beneficial to our business, including our efficiency or profitability."
