The <keyword id="6356172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> on Thursday extended the lockdown-like restrictions in the state till June 1 to break the chain of COVID-19. Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte in an order said the curbs will remain in force till 7 am on June 1. As per the order, additional restrictions include mandatory negative RT-PCR test report for any person entering the state by any mode of transport. The test report will have to be issued within 48 hours before the time of entry into the state. All restrictions enforced as per earlier orders for people arriving from places of "sensitive origin" will be applicable to anyone arriving from any part of the country into the state, the order said. In case of cargo carriers, not more than two people will be allowed to travel in those vehicles. If the carriers are originating from outside <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>,they will be allowed with a negative RT-PCR test report issued within 48 hours before the time of entry into the state and will be valid for seven days, the order said. The lockdown-like curbs were earlier imposed in the state on April 5. The curbs were further tightened on April 15 with Section 144 of the CrPc, banning assembly of five or more people, imposed in theentire state. Joe Biden again tests negative for COVID-19

There is no threat to the ongoing fourth Test against England as all the other playing members have tested negative in two lateral flow tests conducted on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Fielding coach R Sridhar and head physiotherapist Nitin Patel have also been isolated. "The BCCI Medical Team has isolated Mr Ravi Shastri, Head Coach, Mr B. Arun, Bowling Coach, Mr R. Sridhar, Fielding Coach and Mr Nitin Patel, Physiotherapist as a precautionary measure after Mr Shastri's lateral flow test returned positive last evening," BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated in a release. It is understood that Shastri may have got the symptoms after attending his book launch event in the team hotel where outside guests were also allowed. "Since there is no restrictions in the UK, outside guests were allowed during Shastri's book launch party. These people also were his closest contacts, so it has now led to mandatory isolation," a BCCI source said. "You feel for Bharath Arun. This is the second time, that he has to be isolated because someone else had tested positive. Last time it was Dayanand Garani, the masseur, who came in contact with Arun and later tested positive," he added. The regulation exempts foreign state officials at the level of ministers and above, who are required to apply tight protocols to prevent further Covid-19 transmissions, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told a virtual press conference on Monday following a limited cabinet meeting, Xinhua news agency reported. Foreigners who arrive in Indonesia on Monday (December 28) till December 31 are still allowed to enter the country by showing negative results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests conducted in their countries of origin. The test results shall be valid for 48 hours since their departure, and there will be re-examination of PCR upon their arrival in Indonesia. If proven negative in both the PCR tests, the foreigners are required to do a mandatory quarantine for five days, and after that they must return to undergo PCR tests. If the tests show negative results, the foreigners are allowed to continue their trips, the minister said. Meanwhile, all the Indonesian nationals who want to return from abroad are allowed to enter the country by conducting the same PCR tests. Indonesia to close borders till January 14 to stop new Covid strain

A COVID-19 outbreak hit the Indian cricket team on Wednesday as three main players -- senior opener <keyword id="17805" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shikhar-dhawan" source="Orion">Shikhar Dhawan</keyword>, reserve opener <keyword id="4238575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ruturaj-gaikwad" source="Orion">Ruturaj Gaikwad</keyword> and middle-order batter <keyword id="982208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shreyas-iyer" source="Orion">Shreyas Iyer</keyword> -- tested positive for the virus during their mandatory isolation period before the start of West Indies series. Four other persons, including net bowler Navdeep Saini, have also tested positive for COVID-19. Saini is also on standby list. The remaining three who tested positive for the virus are non-playing members -- fielding coach T Dilip, security liaison officer B Lokesh and masseur Rajeev Kumar. "The All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India's ODI squad after seven members, including three players of Team India (Senior Men) tested positive for COVID-19 following three rounds of RT-PCR testing," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement. The Indian team assembled in Ahmedabad on January 31 for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies and were going through a three-day isolation period post their break from the South Africa series. The series starts in Ahmedabad on February 6 with India's 1000th ODI match but it is now a foregone conclusion that the trio will be missing the series as they will have to undergo a week-long isolation and then return with two negative RT-PCR tests. Shah gave a lowdown of the sequence of positive cases in the India camp. "Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Navdeep Saini's (standby player) RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results,' Shah stated in the release. "Fielding Coach T. Dilip and Security Liaison Officer B. Lokesh's RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31st) have returned positive results. Batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad's RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday (February 1st) has returned a positive result. He had tested negative during the first round of testing on Monday," the release further stated. "Batsman Shreyas Iyer and Sports Massage Therapist Rajeev Kumar's RT-PCR tests conducted on Wednesday (February 2nd) have returned positive results. Both had tested negative in the first two rounds of testing." The BCCI medical team is handling the positive cases and the infected persons will remain in isolation till complete recovery is attained. "The players are largely asymptomatic and hopefully will be fine by the end of the isolation period. You feel bad for Shikhar as he might have to miss the series and he is not a part of T20 squad," an official said. Even more disappointing is young Ruturaj Gaikwad's case as this is the second time in one and a half years that he has tested positive for COVID-19. "If you remember, Ruturaj had tested positive in UAE during the 2020 IPL and went through hell. He had a 14-day quarantine back then and missed first part of the season in the Emirates. This is the second time he has tested positive," the official added. It is confirmed that captain Rohit Sharma, senior players like Virat Kohli and coach Rahul Dravid have all tested negative as of Wednesday. "They have returned negative as of today." All those who tested negative will complete their mandatory isolation on Thursday. They will enter the bubble, if they test negative again on Thursday. "The testing protocol set by BCCI medical team is for every day RT-PCR as RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) is often not conclusive. Although teams are supplied with RAT kits in case any player shows symptoms and wants to do a self test," the official said. It is expected that M Shahrukh Khan, R Sai Kishore, Rishi Dhawan, who are stand byes for the series, will now get a look-in to be in the squad. As far as Rohit Sharma's opening partner is concerned, Mayank's inclusion makes it clear that team management is not looking at Ishan Kishan or Venkatesh Iyer for the slot. It must be noted that all the players had tested negative in RT-PCR when they embarked on their journey to Ahmedabad from their respective cities. "The members were asked to report in Ahmedabad on 31st January 2022 for the upcoming three-match ODI and T20I series against West Indies. Every member was also asked to undergo an RT-PCR test at home before embarking on their journey to Ahmedabad and the travel was undertaken only after testing negative," the BCCI said. The idea is to identify people who are unaware they're infectious, so they can isolate, and stop the virus spreading.In the US, President Donald Trump's administration <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rapid-coronavirus-tests-dont-prevent-outbreaks-white-house-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">relied on rapid antigen tests</a>, and Americans can get the test from some pharmacies and drug stores. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-jeff-bezos-mass-testing-will-restart-economy-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in April</a> Amazon was working on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-building-coronavirus-testing-lab-for-employees-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">building its own testing lab</a> to enable the company to test its employees, including those without symptoms. President Joe Biden has said that he will ramp up testing <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/National-Strategy-for-the-COVID-19-Response-and-Pandemic-Preparedness.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in his COVID-19 strategy. </a><h3>What is a rapid antigen test, as opposed to a PCR test?</h3>A rapid antigen test, also called a lateral flow test, gives results in about 15 to 30 minutes. It works by detecting fragments of the virus' genetic material. It is different to the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, which are sent off to a lab to detect virus particles, and are considered the gold standard. Both tests require swabbing the nose.Experts have raised questions about the accuracy of rapid antigen testing in people with no symptoms. <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/943187/S0925_Innova_Lateral_Flow_SARS-CoV-2_Antigen_test_accuracy.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A mass-testing pilot in Liverpool </a>found Innova's lateral flow test, one of the most widely used in the UK, picked up 40% of people with no symptoms. <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/2263746-test-caught-just-3-per-cent-of-students-with-covid-19-at-uk-university/#:~:text=Among%20Birmingham%20students%2C%20only%203.2,for%20this%20type%20of%20test." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scientists in Birmingham </a>tested the same device in students without symptoms, and reportedly picked up just 3% of PCR-positive cases. In the US, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-abbott-testing/abbotts-covid-19-antigen-test-may-help-with-faster-detection-isolation-cdc-idUSKBN29O2DD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Abbott's lateral flow test picked up </a>64.2% of people with symptoms, but 35.8% without.John Deeks, professor of Biostatistics at the University of Birmingham, said in a statement to the Science Media Centre that rapid antigen tests should be <a href="https://twitter.com/deeksj/status/1352204740256534529" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rigorously testing for each different purpose</a>, as if it were a new drug, before mass testing is rolled out. Iain Buchan, clinical professor in Public Health Informatics at the University of Liverpool, who was involved in the Liverpool pilot, explained to Insider the difference between rapid COVID-19 tests and the PCR tests, and why he thinks people should test themselves twice each week.<div type="image" title="Iain Buchan Headshot VB" height="826" width="667" msid="80484764" hostid="261"></div>Questions and responses have been lightly edited for clarity<h3>Dr. Catherine Schuster Bruce: What is the difference between PCR and rapid antigen testing?</h3>Professor Iain Buchan: Lateral flows have a different role to PCR. With lateral flow, you get rapid results. The test comes to people, rather than people going to get a test. There is sufficient biological evidence that this is a useful test of infectiousness.PCR detects whether you have been infected.<h3>What is the role for mass rapid antigen testing?</h3>Public health measures very quickly need to be able to identify those who have the virus, and are infectious, so that infectious people can then quickly self isolate [for at least 10 days], and close contacts quickly self isolate too.<h3>Does it matter what brand the test is?</h3>The underlying technology is pretty much the same. I don't want to comment on particular makes.<h3>Why do different studies with similar tests seem to report different conclusions?</h3>There is no magic test that is 100% accurate, but lateral flow is a useful public health test, picking up at least two thirds of those who might pass on the virus, and probably over 80% of those most likely to pass it on. The results are consistent across studies if you allow for differences between labs and the phase of the epidemic the study was done in.The information is confused because the studies compare against testing PCR positive, rather than how infectious someone is.You can't compare test results. PCR is exquisitely sensitive for picking up people who have had coronavirus but at best 40% sensitive for picking up people who are infectious with coronavirus [meaning it picks up 40% of people who actually have coronavirus].It is well known that PCR detects non-viable RNA [virus] fragments as well as viable virus, meaning that large proportions of individuals who test PCR test positive will no longer be infectious. This means people could isolate inappropriately. Also tests depend on background prevalence - the more people who have the virus, the more sensitive the test.To understand what is happening in the population at large, it could be useful to have PCR test results on people with symptoms and lateral flow test results on as many people as possible without symptoms. This provides an early warning system of what is happening with virus transmission in the community.<h3>Do you think we have enough evidence to be rolling out antigen tests on a large scale? </h3>There is sufficient biological evidence that this is a useful test of infectiousness.But it's not just the biological evidence, it's behavioral and systems [evidence] that we need. It won't be one size fits all evidence here. It's about good quality management and implementation, not just a piece of remote science.You need to implement the tests, understand your local community and the context in which the test is being used in. And that's down to good public health practice. <h3>How often should we be testing people?</h3>If I was running a business and wanted to protect customers and workers, I would encourage staff to test at least twice weekly. Tests every three days are valuable.I think we should "test before you go" to workplaces where most mixing happens. And places like supermarkets. [Testing supermarket workers] will have a knock on effect of protecting the customer, and the local community. <h3>Could it make people who get a negative test reckless?</h3>We can learn that from where the tests are first applied to very large numbers of people - what are the effects on behavior of getting a negative result? But it's not just about the negative test result. It's all the communication that goes with that. The messages from the test center, from the workplace, from your peers in the local community, from the advertising, from the local council, from government...It's all that wrap around communication that affects what somebody does when they get the test. I think that is important. And it's changing all the time because circumstances change. Like with any [public health] programme, it is complicated to get right. You need to pilot these things before you scale them up. And good public health practice shows that you have to keep listening to communities. You have to keep watching what happens when you deploy a public health intervention.<h3>What would you say to someone who was worried about the false reassurance the tests could give?</h3>I would say look at the facts, and not opinions. There is evidence coming out now that this is a really useful test. If you want to support your community then regular testing - twice per week - will really make a valuable contribution to all people around you. But don't stop doing other things like <a href="https://coronavirusresources.phe.gov.uk/Hands-Face-Space-/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"hands, face, space".</a>This will mean we can open up towns and cities earlier.They're just another tool to make everyone safer, not a replacement for other good public health practice.
