As PC and laptop makers urge the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirements accompanied by a quota, the industry stakeholders have met <keyword id="296566" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="it-ministry" source="Orion">IT Ministry</keyword> officials to seek solutions on the matter. The meeting discussed proposed changes, like linking the import of IT hardware to the local manufacturing of a company value and its export value of electronic items, according to sources. The meeting on Friday was called to give suggestions on how the proposed import management system should work and get the stakeholders' feedback. Another meeting is likely to happen again next week to continue discussions on the issue. Last month, the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (<keyword id="6816005" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icea" source="Orion">ICEA</keyword>) wrote to the IT Ministry, requesting the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirement accompanied by a quota, which was extended by 3 months until October 31, fearing that this may lead to price rise in consumer electronics products as companies are not yet prepared for manufacturing PCs, laptops and servers domestically at scale. The letter said that an overarching factor that should be taken into consideration in "avoiding supply chain disruption till domestic production ramps up" is that any "reduction in supplies or even an indication will lead to hoarding and market distortion". This, in turn, can push up consumer prices, "which will adversely impact not just key stakeholders such as students, but also those who are the core of growing the digital economy, i.e. start-ups, IT and ITES firms, BPOs". The industry seeks at least nine-month breather after the PLI for IT Hardware was launched. "The government may undertake a re-assessment of the investment pipeline and the supply situation before inviting the industry to discuss whether any further policy intervention is needed at that stage. It may be too early to assess the full implication of the new scheme before then," according to the letter. Where servers are concerned, the ICEA has received inputs that companies in that sector seek a relook at their inclusion in the proposed intervention. The Central government earlier deferred its decision to restrict the import of certain categories of laptops and computers until November 1, allowing companies three-months time to import these devices. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. The PLI 2.0 for IT hardware has garnered applications from 40 companies including global and domestic. The expected incremental production under the scheme is around Rs 3.35 lakh crore. PC manufacturers meet MeitY officials on import curbs, seek solutions

Indian PC market declines for fourth consecutive quarter, reports 15% decline

Top industry groups and tech giants, including <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> and Intel, have sent a letter to the <keyword id="126668" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-department-of-commerce" source="Orion">US Department of Commerce</keyword>, protesting against <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s recent import restrictions on PCs, laptops and servers. In the letter, the biggest players in technology and manufacturing said the move "could significantly disrupt trade, hamper efforts to more closely integrate India into global supply chains, and harm businesses and consumers in both countries". Eight American trade groups asked the government to urge India to reconsider the policy, reports Bloomberg News. The industry groups included the Information Technology Industry Council, the National Association of Manufacturers and the <keyword id="1034072" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="semiconductor-industry-association" source="Orion">Semiconductor Industry Association</keyword>. They wrote in the letter that any barrier to trade could affect the shipment of US-made computers and electronics into India. According to the notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in India, for clearance of import consignments with effect from November 1, 2023, a valid licence for restricted imports is required. The government has told tech companies that the restrictions are not to ban imports but to promote exports via domestic manufacturing. Meanwhile, top consumer electronics companies like HP, Apple and Dell last week urged the government to extend the November 1 deadline for the licences required for PCs, laptops and tablets by at least an year, as it will take time to configure and set up manufacturing/assembling units as per new guidelines. In a meeting with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officials, also attended by leading industry bodies the Manufacturing Association of IT Hardware (MAIT) and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), the tech companies conveyed to the government they need more time to set up manufacturing units in the country, according to sources. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. The Centre has said the restrictions were imposed for security reasons and also for promoting the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' mission. Urge India to reconsider PC import restrictions: Top industry groups ask US govt

The Wholesale Price Index-based <keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inflation" source="Orion">inflation</keyword> was 12.41 per cent in August and 11.80 per cent in September last year. This year, the Wholesale Price Index (<keyword id="46000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WPI" source="Orion">WPI</keyword>) touched a record high of 15.88 per cent in May. September is the 18th consecutive month of double-digit WPI inflation. "Inflation in September 2022 is primarily contributed by rising prices of mineral oils, food articles, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, chemicals &amp; chemical products, basic metals, electricity, textiles etc. as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year," an official statement said. Inflation in food articles in September eased to 11.03 per cent, against 12.37 per cent in August. However, inflation in vegetables rose to 39.66 per cent during the month, as against 22.29 per cent in August. In the fuel and power basket, inflation came in lower at 32.61 per cent in September, against 33.67 per cent in August. In manufactured products and oil seeds it was 6.34 per cent and (-) 16.55 per cent, respectively. The <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> mainly looks at retail inflation to frame monetary policy. Retail inflation remained above the <keyword id="50847" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="Orion">Reserve Bank</keyword>'s upper tolerance threshold of 6 per cent for the ninth month in a row and was at a 5-month high of 7.41 per cent in September, as per data released earlier this week. To tame stubbornly high inflation, the RBI has hiked the key interest rate four times this year to 5.90 per cent -- the highest since April 2019. WPI inflation eases to 10.7 pc in Sep

Industrial production grows 2.4 pc in July

YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh told IANS that these companies have already deposited 10 per cent of the proposed allocation for land in Sector 29 under the <keyword id="766731" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yamuna-authority" source="Orion">Yamuna Authority</keyword> near the upcoming Jewar airport in Greater Noida. "Seiko Advance Limited, an ink manufacturing company, expressed its desire to make its product on 5 acres of land in Sector 29 of YEIDA," Singh informed. Seiko Advance Limited alone will invest Rs 850 crore and provide employment to thousands of people, he added. Sector 29 is well-developed with several available facilities for companies. The Apple suppliers, along with a known camera parts maker, proposed to set up a unit on about 23 acres of land with a proposed investment of Rs 2,800 crore. Singh told IANS that Apple suppliers proposed the investment at a recently-held meeting in South Korea. Seiko Advance creates ink for devices like the iPhones. Apple CEO Tim Cook had visited the company in 2019, when he had said that the 'Midnight Green' colour dye was "only made by high-quality control and craftsmanship" at its plant. Meanwhile, Apple is fast forwarding its manufacturing plans in India and Vietnam in the wake of unrest in China over zero-Covid policy which has severely disrupted its supply chain, leading to an acute shortage of new iPhone 14 Pro models. The Wall Street Journal had earlier reported that the company is "telling its suppliers to plan more actively for assembling Apple products elsewhere in Asia, particularly in India and Vietnam" in order to "reduce dependence on Taiwanese assemblers led by Foxconn". The China upheaval, which hit its key supplier Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory last month, resulting in violent protests, means "Apple no longer feels comfortable having so much of its business tied up in one place", the report said, citing analysts and people in the Apple supply chain. Apple aims to ship 40-45 per cent of iPhones from India compared to a single-digit percentage currently, according to analyst Ming-chi Kuo. Every fourth iPhone will be made in India by 2025, according to J.P. Morgan. In a fillip to India's thrust on local manufacturing, Apple had earlier this year kicked off production of new iPhone 14 in India, a first for the tech giant as it narrows down the manufacturing period of new iPhones in the country to cut dependence on China. Buoyed by the ease-of-doing business and friendly local manufacturing policies, Apple's 'Make in India' iPhones will potentially account for close to 85 per cent of its total iPhone production for the country this year, according to industry experts. Apple first started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017, with iPhone SE. The tech giant manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones in the country, including iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 at the Foxconn facility, while iPhone SE and iPhone 12 are being assembled at the Wistron factory in the country. Google's new Chrome OS Flex can revive your old computers — here's how it works and how to install it

India's auto components industry witnessed a 34.8 per cent growth to Rs 2.65 lakh crore in first-half of 2022-23, riding on domestic demand, particularly from the passenger vehicles segment, the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India said on Wednesday. During the period, exports of components grew by 8.6 per cent to USD 10.1 billion (Rs 79.03 lakh crore), while imports climbed 17.2 per cent to USD 10.1 billion (Rs 79.8 lakh crore), Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) said. "We've seen great growth come out of passenger cars and commercial vehicles... The festive season was very positive for two-wheelers, and we hope that two-wheelers will be back on the growth track, like they have been in the past," ACMA President <keyword id="125340" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sunjay-kapur" source="Orion">Sunjay Kapur</keyword> told reporters in a virtual conference. He further said moderation in the supply-side issues, such as availability of semiconductors, high input raw-material costs and non-availability of containers, also helped in the growth witnessed in the first half of the ongoing fiscal. ACMA Director General <keyword id="192232" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vinnie-mehta" source="Orion">Vinnie Mehta</keyword> said, "In the first half, 47 per cent of our revenue to the supply to the <keyword id="176215" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="oem" source="Orion">OEM</keyword>s, which is USD 28.6 billion dollars, came from passenger vehicles. Interestingly, in the first half of last fiscal, the passenger vehicles accounted for about 38 per cent of our revenue from the OEM". There has been a demand shift towards SUVs, and the value proposition has also been enhanced, he added. However, he said as the two-wheeler industry was under pressure, it accounted for about 18 per cent of the revenue against 21 per cent in the first half of the last fiscal. On the export front, the association said it grew by 8.6 per cent to USD 10.1 billion (Rs 79,033 crore) in H1 2022-23 from USD 9.3 billion (Rs 68,746 crore) in H1 2021-22. <keyword id="6378080" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="north-america" source="Orion">North America</keyword> accounted for 33 per cent of the total exports, an increase of 12 per cent. <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword> and <keyword id="21718" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword>'s shares stood at 30 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively -- a rise of 4 and 11 per cent, respectively. On the other hand, imports also grew by 17.2 per cent to USD 10.1 billion (Rs 79,815 crore) in H1 2022-23 from USD 8.7 billion (Rs 64,310 crore) in H1 2021-22. Asia accounted for 65 per cent of imports, followed by Europe and North America, with 26 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively. Imports from Asia grew by 21 per cent, from Europe by 6 per cent and North America by 29 per cent, the association noted. <keyword id="6371425" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mehta" source="Orion">Mehta</keyword> said that while the components industry closed the last fiscal with a trade surplus of USD 700 million, in the current fiscal, it has become neutral with exports and imports finely balanced. "The sharper growth in the import has been because of the uptick in the domestic market, very much correlated to growth in the domestic market for the OEM segment," he added. In terms of new technology, Mehta said electric vehicles accounted for about 1 per cent of the overall turnover of the auto component industry. Although it is growing, it has not created a market shift yet, but the industry sees more contributions from the segment going forward. On the outlook, <keyword id="1735" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kapur" source="Orion">Kapur</keyword> said the industry is cautiously looking at global events, including the COVID-19 situation in China and the Ukraine-Russia war. "For the medium to long term outlook, we need to be wary of the impending recession in Europe and the US as also the supply chain issues, which are not fully behind us," he said. For the ongoing year, he said, "I am optimistic that the current fiscal year will witness another good performance from the auto components sector. Further, with growth in consumption of EVs, we are witnessing a fast transformation of the auto components sector to be an integral part of the EV manufacturing supply chain". Auto components industry grows 34.8 pc to Rs 2.65 lakh crore in H1 FY23

(Eds: Adding more details) New Delhi, Feb 28 () India's GDP growth slipped to a nearly 7-year low of 4.7 per cent in October-December 2019, weighed by a contraction in manufacturing sector output, according to official data released on Friday. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth was recorded at 5.6 per cent in the corresponding quarter of 2018-19. In the previous quarter (July-September) of the ongoing fiscal, the economic growth was revised upwards to 5.1 per cent from 4.5 per cent estimated earlier. Similarly, the first quarter growth was revised upwards to 5.6 per cent from 5 per cent. The GDP growth for the December quarter is the lowest since January-March of 2012-13, when it stood at 4.3 per cent. According to the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the gross value added (GVA) growth in the manufacturing sector contracted by 0.2 per cent in the third quarter of this fiscal from 5.2 per cent expansion a year ago. However, the farm sector GVA growth was up at 3.5 per cent, compared to 2 per cent growth in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Construction sector GVA growth too slowed to 0.3 per cent from 6.6 per cent expansion earlier. Mining sector growth came in at 3.2 per cent, as against a contraction of 4.4 per cent a year ago. Electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services segment contracted by 0.7 per cent, from 9.5 per cent growth a year ago. Similarly, trade, hotel, transport, communication and services related to broadcasting growth declined to 5.9 per cent in the third quarter from 7.8 per cent a year ago. Financial, real estate and professional services growth was up at 7.3 per cent in Q3 FY2019-20 from 6.5 per cent. Public administration, defence and other services reported improvement with 9.7 per cent rise during the quarter under review, from 8.1 per cent a year earlier. During April-December 2019, the GDP growth reduced to 5.1 per cent as compared to 6.3 per cent in the same period a year ago. "GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices in Q3 of 2019-20 is estimated at Rs 36.65 lakh crore, as against Rs 35.00 lakh crore in Q3 of 2018-19, showing a growth of 4.7 percent," the NSO said in a statement. "The Per Capita Income at current prices during 2019-20 is estimated to be Rs 134,432, showing a rise of 6.3 percent as compared to Rs 1,26,521 during 2018-19," it added. Meanwhile, Economic Affairs Secretary Atanu Chakraborty said the decline in economic growth has bottomed out. Even for enthusiast gamers, the only choice was Intel Pentium processors in the 90s, to Core 2 Duos in the mid-2000s, and now we have the 11th Gen Intel processors. The difference now is that Intel is not the only option to game on PCs. To make 'PC the best place to play', Intel has ventured into the discrete graphics space. It has been hyping the Xe Graphics for about two years but the hopes are tied to the <keyword id="12304831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel-Arc-Alchemist" source="Orion">Intel Arc Alchemist</keyword> GPU (graphics processing unit), which is said to cater to professional gamers. It's technically the first proper discrete GPU after the Intel Xe DG1 that came earlier this year. And why now? Kennedy told us that Intel has been making integrated graphics for a long time and gave a few examples including the Iris Xe released with the Tiger Lake CPUs (central processing units). He said, "we are entering at a time when there are certainly incumbents and from our perspective, given our technology and scale, we think that the current market dynamics are pretty ripe for disruption. And, you know, competition is always good." While Intel's big announcement about its Arc Alchemist is still awaited, comparisons are being drawn with AMD and NVIDIA on multiple fronts. While Kennedy did not take names, he claims that Intel has the prowess to catch up with the leaders in discrete graphics space. "The breadth of the architecture spans from mobility to high performance compute (HPC) to what we’re doing in gaming with the HPG (high performance gaming) architecture," he said. We asked Kennedy about the gaps that Intel is looking to fill that exist there in the gaming ecosystem. He responded with a similar logic attributing to Intel's age-old existence and its work in making PCs what they are today. Calling Intel one of the "stewards of the PC", he said the company's focus is to continue to advance the PC and to elevate gaming on that PC for the community. "So whether it's driving technology innovation in collaboration with our partners, or creating innovation behind our walls, and leveraging our partners and ecosystem to go drive it; to us, being at the centre of the PC and in the forefront of the innovation of this platform is the key," he said. Intel's approach towards gaming is represented as giving an all-around push to the ecosystem to make it more gamer-friendly. This means in addition to focusing on essentials like overclocking, and high refresh rates, other areas like multitasking will be kept in mind too because as Marcus put it "gamers don't just game right". Following up on Intel's stance on filling the gap in the ecosystem, we asked about the competitive advantages of their products over others. The way Kennedy answered this made it clear that the company will be making the most out with an option to use Intel in both sockets. That's because having their own CPU and GPU in both sockets will allow the company to take their relationship with game developers to do deeper optimisations. Kennedy said that working closely with game developers allows them to ensure that engines work at their best. In his words, Intel's discrete GPU will allow them "to expose the best experiences that those developers want their gamers to experience on top of both the CPU and the GPU hardware. So we're able to optimise across both of those sockets in a way that we hadn't before." As mentioned, working with game developers is essential to create a well-optimised gaming experience. With those advantages with Intel, what should we expect to change in terms of the gaming experience as gamers? What does the future look like? Kennedy started by clarifying that the future of gaming is going to be more than just what's in a single CPU or GPU, it's going to be about the whole experience that the system brings, changing the way we play games on PC. He also mentioned cloud gaming, which came into existence almost a decade ago and gained popularity in recent years. He said it's catching up partly because of better internet, computing hardware and wireless technology. Also, partly due to larger companies taking more notice of it and putting more investment in it. However, he believes "cloud gaming will never be as good as actual gaming on a client". Adding to that, he says "it's going to get to a place where more gamers will start taking advantage of it and it'll be good enough and we'll be able to bring experiences to gamers that may not have been able to enter the market in the past." Lastly, he threw light on competitive gaming or eSports. He said, "the trend of more people watching games and getting excited about playing the games that they see on the screen will just feed a virtuous cycle of growth for this segment specifically and gaming will become more mainstream and it'll be just another sport over time." Given the current circumstances like supply shortage and higher GPU prices right now, consoles look like a favourable option for gamers. It might not be a PC replacement but for casual gamers console is still a good option to resort to. What is your take on console gaming and is there any chance that we can see Intel chips on consoles in near future? The first thing Kennedy pointed out was that the first Xbox console ran an Intel chip. With that fact on the side, he said Intel wants to "bring the technology everywhere to try to delight as many gamers as we can". So that might be a hint that we may see Intel chips on consoles going forward. While drawing a comparison Kennedy summed up to say that "consoles are a good place to play, PCs are the best place to play." He says so because of factors like the limitation of first-party titles on consoles, the cap on frame rates as the best consoles can only do 120fps (frames per second) with most titles capped at 60fps. "So the availability of titles and variety of games that are available and the level of audio-visual fidelity, refresh rates, all of those on the PC is definitely a step up," said Kennedy. The pandemic led many industries to go through a drastic change. How did it change the PC industry in terms of casual users and gamers? The PC market saw a jump in demand all around the globe during the pandemic. Kennedy said while folks were forced to stay indoors to keep themselves safe, they spent more time at home and spent less money, which eventually led them to spend time on their PCs and had more money to upgrade them as per the need. So, whether it was for education, gaming, or for media for streaming there was a relatively large spike in unit volume. With all members of the family working, studying or gaming at home, the density of PC usage per household also rose globally. Even in India, Kennedy said the rise in the number of people switching from phone to PC and consoles for gaming increased. In terms of eSports, he said, "more people started watching eSports, as we saw peak concurrent views of all of our eSports events. And it wasn't just our events, it was across the board. Acknowledging the shortage in semiconductor components, Kennedy said the situation has increased the demand for Intel products and they have been expanding their manufacturing capacity to grow CPU supply by double digits over the year versus 2020.
