Paytm's new campaign aims to spark a conversation about rethinking what treating women respectfully means

By Stuti Roy &amp; Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee New Delhi, Feb 23 () Digitial payment giant Paytm expects to turn profitable after two years as it is monetising the existing customer base and eyes financial services as its next major frontier for growth, its founder CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said.Noida-based firm, which had an astonishing rise after infamous demonetisation in 2016, is betting on financial services, commerce and payments as three key focus areas.In an interview with , Sharma said Paytm's growth is divided into three phases - first three years of finding the right product-market fit; the next was revenue and monetisation; and the last phase will be about profitability and free cash flows."We are in the second phase of that journey," he said.In 2015, Paytm started deploying QR codes and by 2018-19 completed its product-market fit. From 2019-20 onwards, it is monetising."I would say at least 2 years because we are also a large dominant market share company and we wouldn't want to lose market share while becoming profitable next quarter," Sharma said when asked about the timelines for hitting profits.In the last 12 months, Paytm has seen pre-tax losses cut - thanks to monetisation, and not reckless cost-cutting, he said, adding business like Paytm Payments Bank, commerce and cloud were already profitable, while Paytm FirstGames and Paytm Mall is "close to profitability".Paytm - which competes with Google Pay, Flipkart-owned PhonePe and others in the digital payments space - had late last year raised USD 1 billion (over Rs 7,000 crore) in funding from US-based asset management firm T Rowe Price and existing investors, including SoftBank and Alibaba, to fund expansion plans.Paytm had also said it plans to invest around Rs 10,000 crore (USD 1.4 billion) over the next three years to expand financial services. The last round of fund raising had valued the company at about USD 16 billion.Asked about the businesses under OCL that were draining profitability, Sharma said that investments were focused on expanding offline merchant base."Overall, offline merchant expansion and technology is where the investment is happening," he said.Earlier this month, the company said it aims to add close to 10 million merchants to its platform over the next 12-18 months as it brings new features to its payments platform.The company, which has introduced a new all-in-one payment gateway and business solutions as well as an Android-based point of sale (POS) machine, currently has over 16 million merchants across unorganised and organised sectors. Paytm founder reveals road to profitability; may take 2 yrs to come out of red

In a bid to save the cost of logistics and ensure faster deliveries, the Gurgaon-based online marketplace <keyword id="6357066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ShopClues">ShopClues</keyword> has decided to make different regions in the country. It is also looking forward to expanding its seller base and make intra-zonal shipments. 
 
"We are moving towards dividing the country into different cities as opposed to regions for our shipments," said Radhika Aggarwal, chief business officer at ShopClues. "The idea of shipping from within the zone of a customer works perfectly for structured categories. The unstructured category might or might not benefit from this," she added. 
 
The Silicon Valley-founded company will work with local courier partners for its zonal deliveries, which would save up to 25% costs, thereby yielding better margins for the marketplace and prices for the customers. 
 
The same policy is being adopted by Alibaba-backed marketplace Paytm, which has been expanding its online-to-offline shipments across regions so that delivery time can be lessened. 
 
"We are currently at 4 lakh sellers on our platform and plan to increase it to 12 lakh sellers by the end of 2016. This will also improve our 
regional selections and price range of products, mainly from the tier-2 and 3 markets," said Aggarwal. 
 
Shopclues was valued at $1.1 billion in its last round of funding, and is targeting profitability by mid next year.

	Revealing titbits from the short, but ‘heated’ conversation that they had over the phone, Vijay makes his views clear one more time.
 

	“He was trying to tell me that I should talk less about this thing. I said that what you do not know is that these telecom operators want to block everybody who is making them loose their business. They have their own messenger apps, music streaming apps which are paid for services. They want to do these businesses.”
 

	What did Zuckerberg say to this?
 

	“He said that he understands what I was saying. Then asked me if I can just route it towards the telcos and support the telecom operators..”
 

	His stand point is stated in his strong message.
 

	“India is just starting on the journey of the mobile internet when hundreds of companies want to build their start-ups on that. If we are serious about giving this opportunity to these entrepreneurs we better not split the internet.”
 

	When asked if Mark suggested any further meeting to think and discuss it again, he said, “No. Somebody came, met and that was it. I don’t think any rational, logical government will allow it. Internet should be neutral. Every other view is a hogwash.”
 

	Paytm had also published a blogpost earlier titled, ‘Time to go all out &amp; save the net’.
 

	“Had Net Neutrality not been there? Google and Twitter as we see them today, wouldn’t have seen daylight. For internet/tech start-ups, preserving net neutrality is of utmost importance,” it said.
 

	Vijay, is however, confident, that with the kind of support and enthusiasm the current Government is showing towards start-ups, net neutrality will not be threatened for too long.

Supreme Court bench comprising Justice <keyword id="3333505" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="km-joseph" source="Orion">KM Joseph</keyword> and Justice BV <keyword id="620466" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nagarathna" source="Orion">Nagarathna</keyword> expressed its unhappiness with the petitioner and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay and said that such petitions should not be entertained. "Hinduism is a way of life, and that was the reason, India has assimilated everybody and therefore we are able to live together," said Justice BV Nagarathna. Justice Nagarathna mentioned the divide-and-rule policy brought by the British in the country and remarked that "let us not break it again with such kind of petitions". The court remarked not to dig up the past as it would only create disharmony and they can't allow the country on the boil. Justice KM Joseph, who was heading the bench, said, "In Kerala, the state where I belong to, the Hindu king has donated the land to build churches". The court said that our country is secular and supposed to protect the Constitution and remarked that the petitioner is concerned about the past and digging it up to place its burden on the present generation. "The history of any nation cannot haunt the present and future generations of a nation to the point that succeeding generations become prisoners of the past," said the court. Justice KM Joseph said that there is no bigotry in Hinduism. Trying to convince the bench, petitioner Ashwini Upadhyay said, "Hindus have become a minority in many historical places. The country has roads after Lodhi, Ghazni, Ghori and other invaders but there is no single road named after Pandavas." In reply to the petitioner, the court said, "Keep the country in mind, not any religion. A country cannot remain a prisoner of the past and the government is wedded to rule of law, secularism, and constitutionalism." "Being a Christian, he is equally fond of Hinduism, which is the greatest religion in terms of metaphysics. The country should be proud of that", added Justice Joseph. The petitioner has sought to constitute a "Renaming Commission" to find out the original names of 'ancient historical cultural religious places', named after barbaric foreign invaders in order to maintain <keyword id="502906" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sovereignty" source="Orion">Sovereignty</keyword> and to secure the 'Right to Dignity, Right to Religion and Right to Culture. Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has sought to issue appropriate direction to the Home Ministry to constitute a "Renaming Commission" to find out the original names of 'ancient historical cultural religious places', named after barbaric foreign invaders in order to maintain Sovereignty and to secure 'Right to Dignity, Right to Religion and Right to Culture' guaranteed under Articles 21, 25 and 29 of the Constitution. Alternatively, the petitioner has urged the court to direct the Archaeological Survey of India to research and publish the initial names of ancient historical-cultural religious places, which were renamed by barbaric foreign invaders, to secure the 'Right to Know' guaranteed under Article 19 of the Constitution. Business Insider spoke to three spacetech entrepreneurs at TIE Delhi’s India Internet Day conference on September 23. The early entrants of the spacetech domain — Dhruva Space’s Sanjay Nekkanti, Pixxel’s Awais Ahmed and Kawa Space’s Kris Nair — shared their inputs on the experites needed to start a spacetech business. “You can build a system, you can build better and more accurate monitoring of methane emissions. You can build better transportation systems. If you have a much cheaper way to kind of launch a bunch of satellites to any orbit there is no doubt. You have better ideas to kind of work around or in orbit, last mile transfer, small clusters beam clusters...The opportunities are endless,” Nair added. They all had one common thing to share — the will to start a business. Irrespective of their own diverse backdowns, the trio have been killing it in the Indian spacetech industry with several big names backing their business. Nair of Kawa Space, which is backed by Cure.Fit’s Mukesh Bansal and Paytm’s Sharma, noted that if someone has the desire to build something for the space industry, they just need to understand where the big gaps are. They can always build better versions of the already existing mechanisms or find the way to launch satellites for much cheaper, he added. Ahmed’s Pixxel further added that one does not need any connections with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) or be connected to the space industry from the beginning. The Internet is a great place to learn since there are PhD studies, reports, books and the reading material available on it, he said. Besides this, one can always reach out to entrepreneurs in this domain over social media platforms like LinkedIn to understand more about the segment. “The biggest space entrepreneur today, Elon Musk, was not associated with anything related to space. He learnt,” Ahmed added. Speaking from his engineering experience, Dhruva Space’s Nekkanti added there is a lot of scoop for growth hacking as a lot of technologies that are built for earth can come in handy for space operations as well with certain updates. “So, for people who want to be an entrepreneur in this industry if you have an, I talk from an engineer's perspective, if you have an engineering degree. You're currently working somewhere, it could be the IT industry. I think there could be some parts of that that can be applied in the space industry,” he added. Even funding is not a challenge The Indian space sector was valued at $7 billion back in 2019 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of $50 billion by 2024, a PWC report <a href="https://www.pwc.in/assets/pdfs/research-insights/2020/preparing-to-scale-new-heights.pdf">estimates</a>. Funding and garnering the interest of the investors was definitely one of the biggest challenges that the Indian spacetech industry faced until last year. There were no policies around it and investors simply didn’t want to take the risk. Mumbai Angels-backed Dhruva and Techstars-backed Pixxel had to talk to 100s of investors before they could actually close a funding round, However, the segment saw a ray of hope when the Indian government decided to privatise the space and allowed more companies to enter this domain. On May 21 earlier this year, both Anand Mahindra-backed Agnikul and Mukesh Bansal-backed Skyroot bagged<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/skyroot-aerospace-raises-11-million-in-funding-with-plans-to-have-vikram-1-on-the-launch-pad-by-mid-2022/articleshow/82788901.cms"> $11 million </a>each from several big names in the industry. We asked three spacetech entrepreneurs what it takes to enter the field and they listed out the opportunities

New Delhi, May 10 () Sales of non-essential items on e-commerce platforms in the first week of May were lower than last year on account of lockdown, but orders are scaling fast with people buying apparel, smartphones and grooming products among other items, according to industry executives. E-commerce companies have been permitted to sell all items in orange and green zones starting from May 4, 40 days after the nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 25. In the first two phases of the lockdown, e-commerce companies like Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal were allowed to sell only essential items like grocery, medicines and healthcare products. Depending on the number of cases of coronavirus infections, areas have been divided into red, orange and green zones. However, in the red zones that include top e-commerce hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, e-commerce companies can still ship only essential items. While people are going online to buy items like chargers, extension cords, notebooks and pens to facilitate work and study from home, they are also picking up grooming products like trimmers, games like chess, monopoly and carom, and books across genres, a senior industry executive said. The person added that since delivery of non-essentials is still not allowed across the country, the volume is less compared to previous year. However, against March numbers (pre-lockdown), the growth is certainly healthy. Another challenge facing the industry is the availability of limited manpower for warehouses and delivery. "Our order volumes grew rapidly and swiftly reached 50 per cent of pre-lockdown volumes within five days of expanded operations. Compared year-on-year, the order volumes for the first 9 days of May 2020 was 52 per cent of volumes in the same period last year," a Snapdeal spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that another clear indicator of demand was conversions (from visitors to buyers), which was more than double of pre-lockdown average and even though demand estimation is a complex process right now due to multiple variables, the intensity and speed of demand restoration exceeded expectations. Home use category like utensils, mixers and grinders, mops and brooms, and mosquito nets featured high in both search and sales. Snapdeal gets more than 75 per cent of its business from non-metro cities. The spokesperson said locations like Panipat, Ambala, Panchkula, Amritsar in north; Udaipur, Valsad, Jamnagar and Goa in west; Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, Pondicherry, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Tuticorin in south, Cuttack in India and Guwahati in North-East have emerged as current high demand zones. An Amazon India spokesperson said sellers on its platform have received orders for smart devices, electronics, kitchen appliances, clothes, toys and games and other work and study from home items. Paytm Mall Senior Vice President Srinivas Mothey said the company has seen demand for non-essentials steadily picking up in all the orange as well as green zones. "There has been a surge in searches and the sale of mobiles, masks, trimmers, laptops as well as other consumer electronics. There has been a 1.5X increase in sales as compared to March," he said. New Delhi, May 4 () From laptops to apparels, people logged on to e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Paytm Mall and Snapdeal on Monday to place orders for non-essential items but lack of adequate manpower amid the lockdown could delay deliveries, according to industry executives. E-commerce companies have been permitted to sell all items in Orange and Green Zones starting from Monday, the first day of the third phase of the nationwide lockdown that began on March 25. Depending on the number of cases of coronavirus infections, areas have been divided into Red, Orange and Green Zones. In the Red Zones, which include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, the companies can ship only essential items like grocery, medicines and healthcare products. However, shortage of staff at warehouses and for logistics could result in delays in deliveries of items, as per the executives. An Amazon India spokesperson said the company saw demand for various kinds of smart devices, products related to electrical appliances, clothes and work from home enablers, among others. "Our consumers in Orange/ Green zones are buying other priority products that they needed the most. Thousands of sellers have received orders for the first time since the lockdown began in March and we are hopeful that this will help jumpstart the livelihood of many small sellers and their workforce," the spokesperson said. The company reiterated its demand that the list of priority products be expanded for customers in the Red Zone as well in order to revive economic activity while serving urgent needs and ensuring citizen safety in a high-risk area. Under the first and second phase of the nationwide lockdown between March 25 and May 3, the government only allowed delivery of essential goods, including grocery, pharmaceuticals and healthcare products, through e-commerce platforms. A Snapdeal spokesperson said the company expects 80-90 per cent of its sellers in the Orange and Green Zones to become active over the course of this week. On an average, deliveries are being promised within 6-10 days and actual deliveries are likely to be completed in lesser number of days, the spokesperson added. "Thousands of our sellers received orders for non-essential products on Day 1... we have started picking up orders from sellers in Salem, Amritsar, Gurugram and Guwahati, amongst many other locations. (Eds: Recasting overnight story) New Delhi, May 5 () From laptops to apparels, people are logging on to e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Paytm Mall and Snapdeal to place orders for non-essential items, but lack of adequate manpower amid the lockdown could delay deliveries, as per industry executives. E-commerce companies have been permitted to sell all items in orange and green zones starting from Monday, the first day of the third phase of the nationwide lockdown that began on March 25. Depending on the number of cases of coronavirus infections, areas have been divided into red, orange and green zones. In the red zones, which include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, the companies can ship only essential items like grocery, medicines and healthcare products. However, shortage of staff at warehouses and logistics hubs could result in delays in deliveries of items, as per the executives. An Amazon India spokesperson said the company saw demand for various kinds of smart devices, products related to electrical appliances, clothes and work from home enablers, among others on the first day after delivery of non-essentials resumed in orange and green zones. "Our consumers in orange/ green zones are buying other priority products that they needed the most. Thousands of sellers have received orders for the first time since the lockdown began in March and we are hopeful that this will help jumpstart the livelihood of many small sellers and their workforce," the spokesperson said. The company reiterated its demand that the list of priority products be expanded for customers in the red zone as well in order to revive economic activity while serving urgent needs and ensuring citizen safety in a high-risk area.
