<ul><li>As the year of most IPOs in India comes to an end, another one kicks off.</li><li>The excitement for IPOs, particularly from retail investors, is likely to be a lot sober in 2022, says <keyword id="1038160" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ajay-saraf" source="Orion">Ajay Saraf</keyword>, head of investment banking and institutional equities at ICICI Securities.</li><li>That would mean companies would be less confident in demanding high valuations, leaving more profit on the table for small investors in good companies.</li><li>Check out our <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/bi-newsletter">weekly explainers</a> on the hottest topics and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/newsletters_signup.cms">sign up</a> if you like them</li></ul>The bull run in Indian equities that continued from mid-2020 up until late 2021 had drawn in hordes of companies, including the likes of <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, <keyword id="6376684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nykaa" source="Orion">Nykaa</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, who wanted to make the best of the brimming optimism and get the best price for their shares. Millions of retail investors wanted a part of the boom in Asia’s best performing stock market, and a lot of IPOs benefited from the frenzy. That kind of unbridled enthusiasm is unlikely in 2022, according to Ajay Saraf, head of investment banking and institutional equities at ICICI Securities in an interview to Business Insider. Saraf is not alone. Srinivas Rao Ravuri, chief investment officer at PGIM India Mutual Fund also <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/daily-voice-2022-would-be-a-challenging-year-for-investors-and-companies-planning-ipos-says-srinivas-rao-ravuri-of-pgim-india-mf-7856261.html">reportedly</a> believes that 2022 would be a challenging year for investors and companies planning IPOs. But that’s not entirely a bad thing. If the cautious mood makes good companies, who need to raise money, tone down the pricing it may leave more profit on the table for small investors. There were 63 initial public offerings (IPO) in 2021 and they raised a cumulative <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/list-of-upcoming-ipo-in-year-2022-in-india-ags-transact-adani-wilmar-prudent-corporate-advisory/slidelist/88492728.cms">₹1.18 lakh crore from investors</a> [hyperlink]. And, some of them doubled, or more, the <keyword id="1184176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo-investors" source="Orion">IPO investors</keyword>’ money on listing itself. <table global interest rates, tapering, central bank prioritising inflation over growth and increasing interest rate earlier than expected, which might make the market volatile and IPOs may not be as smooth and great as 2021,” said Saraf. If the market mood is uncertain, then the companies planning IPOs are likely to be less confident in seeking high valuations. Startups like <keyword id="143842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobikwik" source="Orion">Mobikwik</keyword> are already waiting patiently before they launch the IPO to get the best price. Founder Upasana Taku told Business Insider that she is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/mobikwik-founder-says-they-are-not-selling-any-shares-in-the-ipo/articleshow/88392998.cms">waiting for the market conditions to improve</a> even though she has the SEBI approval to launch the IPO. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has said in the past that he has never invested in an IPO. “The idea of saying the best place in the world where I can put money is something where all the selling, and their commissions are higher, the animal spirits are rising, that’s going to be better than a thousand other things I can where there is no similar selling enthusiasm, and the desire to get the deal done and earn some commissions. That’s the best thing to buy in a single day?,” Buffett <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/05/06/warren-buffett-on-why-hes-never-bought-an-ipo.html">asked in an interview</a> in May 2019. In 2022, the animal spirits will be lower i.e. the emotional trigger for investments will be contained and therefore the valuations may be cheaper. “Valuation will become a bit more in favour of investors and that is the trend which we will see (next year),” said Saraf. If the IPOs are priced cheaper, it is likely that the headroom for profit is higher for investors, particularly for those who invest for the longer term. While this is general wisdom, it may so happen that the excitement may be lesser for some companies and higher for others. “Consumer tech and BFSI will lead the overall IPOs in terms of sector concentration in 2022,” said Saraf. Saraf doesn’t think so. “I think Indian investors, given how the year 2021 was, they are willing to put money into companies who are still not breaking even or whose profitability may be few years away...and this trend will continue,” said Saraf. The IPO excitement may be softer in 2022 but that can be a good thing for investors

<ul><li>The new changes will affect companies like <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword>, <keyword id="6357886" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="phonepe">PhonePe</keyword>, <keyword id="143842" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobikwik">Mobikwik</keyword>, and <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword> among others.</li><li>These mobile wallet operators had certain leeway with <keyword id="167905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KYC">KYC</keyword> whereas banks had to meet full KYC requirements.</li><li>To cushion the need for new compliance, the <keyword id="30067" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword> has also doubled the amount of money that can be stored in these wallets to ₹2 lakh.</li><li>The RBI had earlier in October 2018 announced that KYC and interoperability will be voluntary for PPIs.</li><li>Check out the latest news and updates on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/">Business Insider</a>.</li></ul><keyword id="6354335" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> governor Shaktikanta Das today said that prepaid mobile wallet operators like Paytm, PhonePe, Mobikwik, and Google Pay among others will also need to implement full KYC (Know Your Customer) process soon. KYC guidelines are mandatory mobile companies and financial services companies to identify and verify their customers, which is done at the time of opening an account and repeated at regular intervals. Currently, <keyword id="6368227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobile-Wallets">mobile wallets</keyword> had some leeway, whereas similar products issued by banks had to meet all the KYC norms. The RBI had earlier in October 2018 announced that KYC and interoperability will be voluntary for prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) such as cards, wallets etc. This has been made mandatory now. “As migration towards interoperability has not been significant, it is now proposed to make interoperability mandatory for full payment acceptance infrastructure. To incentivise migration of PPIs to full KYC it is proposed to increase the current outstanding balance from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh,” said Das. The apex bank’s statement said that the move was being brought in ‘to promote optimal utilisation of payment instruments, and given the constraint of scarce acceptance infrastructure (like PoS devices, ATMs, QR codes, bill-payment touch points, etc.)’. The new KYC norms for mobile wallets will not kick off immediately. The central bank said that detailed instructions for the same would be released soon. Additionally, the RBI has also put forth another benefit for non-bank PPIs. "As a confidence-boosting measure, it is proposed to allow the facility of cash withdrawal, subject to a limit, for full-KYC PPIs of non-bank PPI issuers as well," said the statement from RBI. With this, wallets like that of Paytm, Mobikwik can be used to withdraw cash from ATMs. Earlier, banking PPIs like Yono app from SBI had this facility.

According to an Assocham-RNCOS joint study, the mobile payment transaction volume is likely to register a compounded growth rate of over 90 percent to reach 153 billion by FY 2021-22. This is against only 3 billion transactions in FY 2015-16. 
 
Mobile payment transaction value in India is also likely to register over 150% CAGR and cross Rs 2,000 trillion by FY 2021-22 from just over Rs 8 trillion as of FY 2015-16 Indian M-wallet market study said.

 Another new payment system, <keyword id="6358921" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UPI">UPI</keyword>, is yet to be supported by most supermarkets and retail stores even though UPI payment system is extremely simple to implement and does not require any new hardware.

How much money did Paytm, Mobikwik, and Freecharge make from demonetization?

<ul><li>As digital payments industry booms, the RBI is going to set up a central payments fraud information registry. </li><li>The detailed framework for the registry will be set up by October 2019. </li><li>The Indian digital payments industry has seen a boom over the years and is set to be a $6 billion industry by 2020.</li></ul>The Reserve Bank of India has said it will set up central payments fraud information registry to monitor risks in the rising digital payments segment. “At present, there is a mechanism in place for banks to report all banking frauds to the Central Fraud Monitoring Cell of the Reserve Bank. With the digital payment ecosystem making substantial progress in terms of growth of payment infrastructure as well as volume and value of digital payment transactions, fraud risk monitoring and management by the stakeholders have assumed importance,” said the statement from the RBI. The Indian digital payments is all set to swell to $6 billion by 2020, according to Nasscom. Fintech startups like <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword>, <keyword id="143842" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobikwik">Mobikwik</keyword>, Razorpay are increasing their user base. Added to that, global giants like Amazon, Google and WhatsApp too are entering the space, making RBI’s move extremely timely. To improve consumer confidence, RBI is moving to introduce a body that will track frauds. “Payment system participants will be provided access to this registry for near-real time fraud monitoring. India will soon have an online fraud registry with real-time data

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) after conducting raids at multiple locations belonging to <keyword id="714947" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="payment-gateways" source="Orion">payment gateways</keyword> i.e <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> and PayU in connection with a case of Chinese Loan apps, asked Paytm to freeze certain amounts from a few Merchant IDs (MIDs). Sources said the raids were conducted in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Lucknow and <keyword id="6354925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kolkata" source="Orion">Kolkata</keyword>. The ED has not given any official comment on the matter. On September 3, raids were conducted at the premises belonging to online payments gateways including <keyword id="14887233" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="razorpay-pvt-ltd" source="Orion">Razorpay Pvt Ltd</keyword>, Cashfree Payments and <keyword id="14887232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-payment-services-ltd" source="Orion">Paytm Payment Services Ltd</keyword>. A Paytm spokesperson said that as part of the ongoing investigations of a specific set of merchants, the ED has sought information regarding such merchants to whom we provide payment processing solutions. "These merchants are independent entities, and none of them are our group entities. We are, and will continue to, fully cooperate with the authorities, and all the directive actions are being duly complied with," said the Paytm spokesperson. The ED has instructed Paytm to freeze certain amounts from the Merchant IDs of a specific set of merchant entities (as mentioned by the ED in its press release). "None of the funds which have been instructed to be frozen belong to Paytm or any of our group companies. As we have mentioned before, ED continues to seek information about certain merchants from various payment service providers, and we have shared the required information," the Paytm spokesperson said. What is the case? The case is based on 18 FIRs registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station, Bengaluru City, against numerous persons for their involvement in extortion and harassment of the public who had availed small loans through the mobile apps being run by those entities. "During enquiries, it had emerged that these entities are operated by Chinese persons. The modus operandi of these entities is that by using forged documents of Indians and making them dummy directors of those entities, they are generating proceeds of crime," the ED said. The ED had said that it has come to its notice that the entities were conducting their suspected business through various Merchant IDs/Accounts held with Payment Gateways/banks. The premises of Razorpay Pvt Ltd, Cashfree Payments, Paytm Payment Services Ltd and entities controlled/operated by Chinese persons were covered in the search operations. "During the search operations, it was noticed that the said entities were generating proceeds of crime through various Merchant IDs/Accounts held with Payment Gateways/banks and they are also not operating from the addresses given on the <keyword id="6355225" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mca" source="Orion">MCA</keyword> website/registered address and having fake addresses. An amount of Rs 17 crore has been seized in merchant IDs and bank accounts of these Chinese persons-controlled entities," the ED official had said. Meanwhile, a Razorpay spokesperson had said "Some of our merchants were being investigated by law enforcement about a year and a half back. As part of the ongoing investigation, the authorities requested additional information to help with the investigation. We have fully cooperated and shared <keyword id="167905" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kyc" source="Orion">KYC</keyword> and other details. The authorities were satisfied by our due diligence process." The search operations are in progress. ED asks Paytm to freeze certain amounts from few merchant IDs after raids (Ld)

Consumers are trying out new methods of payments, especially <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=digital+wallets">digital wallets</a>. This trend saw transactions by <keyword id="6358031" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital-wallets">digital wallets</keyword> grow three times between February and April. 
 
A <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=RTI">Right to Information</a> application filed with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=RBI">Reserve Bank of India</a> (RBI) revealed that around 6.7 crore transactions worth Rs 1,196 crore were recorded through digital wallets in April compared with 2.4 crore payments totalling Rs 876 crore in February. 
 
The total number of digital wallets as of April 2015 is 101.86 million. Through digital wallets, people can pay through mobilephones. 
 
Economic Times reported that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Paytm">Paytm</a> spent around Rs 100 crore on advertising its e-wallet services during February-April. 
 "February was the time when the cricket world cup took place and we first started advertising on television. As a result, we attracted new users. While existing users have become comfortable in making high-value transactions, new users are still experimenting with the product,” Amit Lakhotiya, vice-president at <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, told ET. 
 Meanwhile, investors are attracted to the growth of digital wallets and in past few months, Paytm raised $375 million and <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> got $25 million. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=electronic+payment">E-wallet</a> companies MobiKwik and <keyword id="1493568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayU">PayU</keyword> told the financial daily that they plan to spend over Rs 100 crore and Rs 60 crore, respectively, on advertising over the next few months to boost digital transactions. 
 
"If we created a wallet for every mobile number that ever used our platform, then MobiKwik would have 100-120 million wallets today," Bipin Preet Singh, founder and CEO of MobiKwik, told ET.

Digital wallets becoming popular among consumers, reveals RTI

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, the mobile payments and commerce firm headquartered in Noida is looking at the coming year with hopeful eyes. As per reports, it is expecting its 110 million wallet users to add about $500 million in their wallets in 2016, which means a tenfold rise from 2015. 
 "In 2015, we saw wallets become mainstream. Next year, as more and more businesses push marketing dollar spends to cashbacks and wallets, the recharge value and frequency will steadily increase," Paytm founder <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> told ET. 
 
This projected figure doesn’t count cashbacks that the company offers its customers when they do e-commerce transactions via Paytm. 
Sharma is expecting to see startups offering a lot of extras including loans and insurances built on top of wallets next year, which would help them competing with credit cards, if not replacing them. 
 
As per existing norms set by the RBI, Paytm has to restrict its customers to Rs 10,000 wallet recharge per month on a mobile number and email ID verification. In order to do transactions above this amount, customers need to adhere to full Know Your Customer (KYC) norms, the process of which is like opening a bank account. 
 Paytm, which was started in 2010, is backed by China's giant <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword> and affiliate <keyword id="2702533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ant-Financial">Ant Financial</keyword>, and faces competition from <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword>, <keyword id="6377963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Freecharge">FreeCharge</keyword>, <keyword id="545632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel-Money">Airtel Money</keyword> and <keyword id="1493568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayU">PayU</keyword>, all big names in the e-wallet business.

These marquee Indian startups could be lining up for some big-bang IPOs

Its users will now be able to recharge their phones in 150 countries. The international recharge feature is live in countries in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa, United States, Latin America and Carribean; across over 550 operators. “This new feature will enable millions - immigrants in India from across the globe, students studying abroad and even frequent travellers - the power of connectivity at their fingertips. MobiKwik’s competitor in India, <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> had already entered two international markets – Canada and Japan. Meanwhile, the focus of MobiKwik’s new feature is to make the lives of immigrants simpler. “Nearly 5.2 million immigrants live in India, making it the twelfth-largest immigrant population in the world,” said data from the Pew Research Center. With MobiKwik’s new feature, they can now recharge for friends and family across the border while living in India. This feature will come to the aid of Indian students studying abroad. MobiKwik marks its global foray, enables international recharge in 150 countries

<ul><li><keyword id="143842" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobikwik">Mobikwik</keyword>, a digital payments company, has said that its payment gateway business has turned profitable. </li><li>With an IPO in mind, the company is now aiming for a ₹1.4 lakh crore annual payment volume from the payment gateway business.</li><li>Earlier in July, Mobikwik had reported a funding of ₹8.67 crores. </li></ul>Mobikwik, one of India’s leading digital payments companies, has claimed that its payment gateways vertical had turned profitable since April 2019. “Our focus on building the best tech stack for our merchants is evident in the growth and success of our Payment Gateway business. Our product and user experience (UX) philosophy is to keep the user experience simple and ultra fast. Payment Gateway is one of our fastest growing verticals and will play an instrumental role in our path to profitability,” said Upasana Taku, Co-Founder, MobiKwik. With this, the payments company now aims to ₹1.4 lakh crore annual payment volume for its payment gateway business. As a payment gateway, Mobikwik finds clients in businesses like Uber, IRCTC, Dream11, Bajaj Finance, Zomato, Grofers, Blue Dart, Delhivery, Dominos, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, etc. “Over 94 million unique cards are saved on MobiKwik PG platform; this includes 20 million credit cards which is 50% of all credit cards issued in India,” said the company’s official statement. In July, the company had also announced a new round of funding of ₹8.67 crore from Trifecta Capital and NDTV. Its previous investors include Sequoia Capital and American Express among others. According to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/ipos/fpos/ahead-of-ipo-mobikwik-scouts-for-investor-eyes-profit-from-fy21/articleshow/69810493.cms?from=mdr">reports</a>, Mobikwik is also planning to head for an IPO in the next three years. Paytm claims to hold over 50% of the market share and has said that it does 400 million transactions per month; is five times more than its next competitor. A report by Credit Suisse Group AG says that the Indian digital payments market will increase five-fold from the current $200 billion to $1 trillion by the year 2023. This has also resulted in many international players eyeing the Indian market like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/google-wallet-creator-osama-bediers-startup-poynt-will-launch-in-india-in-2019/articleshow/68145220.cms">Osama Bedier's Poynt.</a> Bedier is also credited to be the creator of the Google Wallet. In June 2019, Mobikwik had also partnered with DT One, a global B2B network for mobile recharge, giving its users the opportunity to recharge their phones in 150 countries. MobiKwik’s competitor in India, Paytm had already entered two international markets – Canada and Japan.

Heading for an IPO, Mobikwik reports a profit in its payment gateway business

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=RBI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Reserve Bank of India </a>(RBI) has some good news for <keyword id="6358031" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-wallets">digital wallets</keyword>. In the backdrop of rising popularity of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UPI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Unified Payment Interface</a> (<keyword id="6358921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI">UPI</keyword>), or payment through digital wallets, the RBI has decided to make digital wallets inter-operable. 
 
At present, digital wallets such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=paytm&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Paytm</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mobikwik&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">MobiKwik</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PhonePe&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PhonePe</a>, etc can access the UPI network through partner banks to facilitate bank-to-bank money transfers. 
 Once the RBI gives a nod to inter-operation of digital wallets, you will be able to send money directly to <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> from your FreeCharge wallet and vice-versa. 
 
“RBI is expected to issue guidelines shortly on interoperability and 'know your customer' (KYC) norms for digital wallet companies. RBI will also decide on the interchange fees between the wallets for them to be able to access the UPI framework,” ET quoted two people as saying. 
 
Online money transfer and payments are gaining popularity in India and the Indian Government is also pushing for Aadhaar-based payment platform and another instrument for transactions using QR codes. 
 Bipin Preet Singh, chief executive of <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword>, told ET, “The company is keen to partner with other financial networks to develop a collaborative financial services platform." 
 
"We are hearing that the process (of opening up UPI for digital wallets) is likely to be fast-tracked. Since the (prepaid payment instruments, or digital wallets) are also issued licences by RBI, the logical step is to open the UPI infrastructure to them and make it more inclusive," Ritesh Pai, country head for digital banking at Yes Bank, which has partnered with Flipkart-owned payments venture PhonePe, told ET. 
 
As per the RBI data, UPI network registered about 4.2 million transactions worth Rs 1,900 crore in February.
