This move is seen as a relief for the company, which has been under scrutiny following the RBI’s intervention in January. The NPCI, which had previously allowed Paytm to operate as a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) for UPI transactions, has now reinstated its ability to bring new users onto the platform, albeit with strict conditions. Paytm can continue UPI operations through its partnerships with major banking institutions, including SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and YES Bank. The NPCI’s approval comes after a thorough review of Paytm’s compliance with procedural guidelines, including those pertaining to risk management, app branding, multi-bank participation, and data privacy. The fintech firm has been instructed to adhere to key regulatory frameworks, such as the Payments and Settlement Act of 2007 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023. This decision stemmed from ongoing concerns about the bank’s compliance and serious issues that needed addressing. As a result, Paytm found itself unable to onboard new UPI users, significantly disrupting its growing customer base and raising doubts about its future in the crowded <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> market. However, things took a turn for the better in March 2024 when the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) gave Paytm the green light to resume UPI transactions. The catch? For those unaware, UPI123 was launched in March 2022, to enable feature-phone users to use UPI. This facility is now available in 12 languages. The governor also announced a beneficiary account name look-up facility for Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) systems. Payment Systems like UPI and IMPS provide a facility for the remitter to verify the name of the receiver (beneficiary) before initiating a payment transaction. There have been requests to introduce such a facility for RTGS and NEFT systems, the Governor said. "Accordingly, to enable remitters in RTGS and NEFT to verify the name of the beneficiary account holder before initiating funds transfer, it is now proposed to introduce a 'beneficiary account name look-up facility'," he said. As part of this, remitters can input the account number and the branch IFSC code of the beneficiary, following which the name of the beneficiary will be displayed. This facility is aimed at increasing customer confidence and reducing the possibility of wrong credits and fraud. The Central Bank will also create a 'Reserve Bank Climate Risk Information System (RB-CRIS)' amid climate change emerging as one of the significant risks to the financial system. Das said it is crucial for regulated entities to undertake climate risk assessments to ensure the stability of their balance sheets and that of the financial system. Such an assessment requires, among other things, high-quality data relating to local climate scenarios, climate forecasts, and emissions, he said. The available climate-related data is characterised by various gaps such as fragmented and varied sources, differing formats, frequencies and units. To bridge these gaps, Das said the Reserve Bank proposes to create a data repository – RB-CRIS, comprising two parts. The first part will be a web-based directory, listing various data sources, (meteorological, geospatial, etc.) which will be publicly accessible on the RBI website. Govt warns about fake SMS asking users to update their PAN – what it is and how to stay safe

The survey found that 38% of users make over 50% of their payment transactions via <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> instead of debit, credit, or any other form of digital transaction. "Only 22 % UPI users surveyed are willing to bear a <keyword id="20813527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="transaction-fee" source="keywords">transaction fee</keyword> on payments, 75% of respondents stated that they will stop using UPI if a transaction fee is introduced," the survey said. The survey comprising three broad areas, claims to have received 42,000 responses from 308 districts but the number of replies on each question varied. The questions regarding transaction fee on UPI received 15,598 responses. The stock climbed 5 per cent to Rs 425.45 -- its upper circuit limit -- on the BSE after falling in the past three trading days. In traded volume terms, 7.97 lakh shares of the company were traded on the BSE and over 46.64 lakh shares on the NSE during the day. In a filing on Friday, One97 Communications said the company and its associate entity, Paytm Payments Bank Limited, have introduced additional measures to strengthen their approach towards independent operations of PPBL. "As part of this process to reduce dependencies, Paytm and PPBL have mutually agreed to discontinue various inter-company agreements with Paytm and its group entities," the BSE filing said. Also, the <keyword id="20791583" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sha" source="keywords">sha</keyword>reholders of PPBL have agreed to simplify the Shareholders Agreement (SHA) to support PPBL's governance, it added. The Board of OCL (One97 Communications Ltd) approved the termination of agreements and amendment of SHA on March 1, 2024. Paytm had announced earlier that it would sign up new partnerships with other banks and take measures to provide seamless services to its customers and merchants. In a regulatory action in January, the RBI barred PPBL from accepting fresh deposits or top-ups in customer accounts, wallets, FASTags, and other instruments after February 29 -- a deadline that was later extended to March 15.

The same stood at Rs 2,342 crore during the year-ago period. For Q1FY25,the company registered a gross merchandise value (GMV) of Rs 4.3 lakh crore, and a net payment margin of Rs 383 crore. The company expects the annual payment processing margin (including <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> incentives, which gets paid in Q4 of every financial year) to be in the range of 5-6 bps. On the financial and <keyword id="20257159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marketing-services" source="keywords">marketing services</keyword> front, the revenue for April-June 2024 was Rs 280 crore and Rs 321 crore, respectively. The revenue from marketing services, which includes advertising, and ticketing for travel, movies and events, was down largely due to seasonality of this business. Overall, Paytm's net loss the quarter stood at Rs 840 crore, significantly up from Rs 357 crore in the year ago period. <h2>Low Sounds from Sound Box, UPI </h2>The company highlighted that its per device subscription revenue had tanked, and expects it to rise in the coming days, as it pushed for new merchant signups and redeployment from inactive merchants. Additionally, the company is awaiting permission to begin onboarding new UPI customers, which would help it drive up the number of its monthly transacting users. As of June 30, 2024 the company's monthly transacting users (MTU) stood at 7.8 crore, down from 8.9 crore in March 2024 and about 10.4 crore in January this year. <h2>Rise in loan disbursal </h2>In its release, the company noted that it is "expanding its loan cross-selling by integrating more types of loans from our partners, including secured credit like loan against property and gold loans". The value of merchant loans it disbursed during the quarter was Rs 2,508 crore, and about 50% of these were availed by repeat borrowers. The average ticket size in this category also jumped up from Rs 2,25,000 to Rs 1,90,000, with an average tenure of 13 months. As for personal loans, the company disbursed loans worth Rs 2,500 crore during the quarter. Here, the average ticket size and tenure remained stable at Rs 1,35,000 and 16 months, respectively. About 1.1% of the monthly transacting users on Paytm avail such loans. The company also reported a rise in number of credit cards activated in June 2024, which stood at 12.8 lakh, as compared to 7.5 lakh last year. At present, the company has 6 active partners for credit card distribution. <h2>Compliance first approach </h2>The company saw in uptick in its indirect costs from Rs 1,220 crore in June 2023 to Rs 1,301 crore as of June 2024, which it attributed to higher marketing costs to create awareness regarding new partnerships in the payments business as TPAP (third party application provider), Its software, cloud and data centre expenses increased QoQ (from Rs 162 crore in March 2024 to Rs 182 crore in June 2024) due to one-time charges relating to the migration to the TPAP model. However, the company expects this cost to come down in upcoming quarters. Going ahead, Paytm will largely focus on reactivating existing dormant UPI customers. "Once we are allowed new UPI user onboarding, we will acquire new monetizable customers with discipline on acquisition costs", the release said. Apart from this, it also aims on enhancing credit distribution, expanding secured lending products , allocating more resources to insurance distribution and mutual fund distribution, "which offer large monetization opportunities" and maintaining a stringent focus on compliance first approach across their businesses. Paytm Q1FY25 results: Revenue from payment services plunges to Rs 900 crore, monthly transacting users in June dip to 7.8 crore

Payments made via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reported a 45% yearly growth, according to data from the National Payment Corporation of <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> (<keyword id="19998946" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI" source="keywords">NPCI</keyword>). The value of transactions also saw a growth of over 35%, totaling Rs 20.64 trillion. This marks the third consecutive month when total transactions exceeded Rs 20 trillion. In June 2024, the total UPI transaction value was Rs 20.07 trillion, while in May it was Rs 20.44 trillion. NPCI data also showed that the average daily transaction value through UPI in July 2024 was Rs 466 million, or about Rs 66,590 crore. Compared with June, the volume of <keyword id="19957378" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI-transactions" source="keywords">UPI transactions</keyword> grew by 3.95% in July, while the value of transactions increased by 2.84%. In the first four months of the current fiscal year (2024-25), UPI recorded transactions amounting to Rs 80.79 trillion, across approximately 55.66 billion transactions. In 2023-24, total UPI transactions were 131 billion, compared to 84 billion in 2022-23. The monthly bulletin of the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) reported that over the last four years, UPI transactions have seen a ten-fold increase in volume, from 12.5 billion transactions in 2019-20 to 131 billion transactions in 2023-24, which accounts for 80% of the total digital payment volumes. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions experienced substantial growth, increasing by 57% year-on-year in FY24. Within this segment, PhonePe and Google Pay dominated, holding a combined market share of 86%, according to the Boston Consulting Group's (BCG) Banking Sector Roundup for 2023-24. A shift in <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> was noted, with credit card transactions doubling over the past three years. In contrast, debit card transactions declined by 43% year-on-year. By making digital payment platform technology and device agnostic, UPI has contributed to <keyword id="20377974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-inclusion" source="keywords">financial inclusion</keyword> at the grassroots level. Digital payments in India are hitting fresh highs, as citizens increasingly adopt emerging modes of online transactions. One key emphasis of the Indian government has been to ensure that the benefits of UPI are not limited to India alone; other countries, too, can benefit from it. UPI is India's mobile-based fast payment system, which facilitates customers to make round-the-clock payments instantly using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) created by the customer. The share of UPI in digital payments in India has reached close to 80% in 2023. Today, India accounts for nearly 46% of the world's digital transactions, based on 2022 data.

UPI transactions cross Rs 20 trillion for third successive month, in July 2024

Mumbai, <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> on Friday said NPCI has been asked to examine the possibility of it becoming a third party application provider for continued <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> operations of the Paytm app. The central bank has barred <keyword id="19907220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank" source="keywords">Paytm Payments Bank</keyword> from accepting further credits into its customer accounts and wallets after March 15, 2024. With an aim to ensure seamless digital payments by UPI customers using '@paytm' handle operated by the Paytm Payments Bank, <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> said it has asked the <keyword id="19907219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-payments-corporation-of-india" source="keywords">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) to examine the request to become a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) for UPI channel for continued UPI operation of the Paytm app. The request has been made by One97 Communication Ltd (OCL), which owns the Paytm brand, RBI said in a statement. For seamless migration of '@paytm' handle to other banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said NPCI may facilitate certification of 4-5 banks as Payment Service Provider (PSP) Banks with demonstrated capabilities to process high volume UPI transactions.
