The company is currently sitting on a market cap of ₹84,032 crore ($11.2 billion).<br /><br />Notably,  global investment bank Macquarie had set the target price for Paytm at ₹1,200, which is 44% below the issue price of ₹2,150 . <br /><br /><keyword id="198636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="Orion">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword>, commenting on the same report, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-VNvhlcyr8">told</a> CNBC TV18, “somebody who has not met us and has an opinion on us, is not my opinion to keep an opinion on that. Paytm is inching closer to Macquarie's target of ₹1200

The company’s network of over 15,000 stores across several formats (supermarkets, digital stores, etc.) and a vast customer base of more than 400 million in telecom and over 200 million in the retail segment could give JFS a large customer base to bank on.<br /><br />“Unlike other fintechs, JFS will have a large balance sheet, not be asset-light and eventually manufacture most product offerings, giving it a significant competitive advantage, in our view,” the Jefferies report added. <br /><br />Access to vast amounts of real-time data will give the RIL arm a big advantage, making it a tough competitor to other NBFCs, banks and fintechs, analysts say.<br /><br />“JFS will differ from most other fintechs, as it will have access to huge amounts of data, gathered from non-financial relationships; it can process and analyse this data in real time, to offer financial services, similar to Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google,” added the Jefferies report.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Here are the factors which could benefit JFS" comment="subhead" text="Here are the factors which could benefit JFS"><span data-til="noop">Here are the factors which could benefit JFS</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />According to the analysts at Macquarie Research, JFS has multiple factors which could help it go one up on the likes of Paytm and Bajaj Finance, among others.<br /><br />Reliance’s deep pockets mean that JFS will benefit from an AAA credit rating, which will help it in attracting funds at low costs when compared to its rivals. As of now, only six large non-banking financial companies (NBFC) have the AAA credit ratings – HDFC, Bajaj Finance, LIC Housing, Tata Capital, Aditya Birla Capital and HDB Financial.<br /><br />Other factors include highest capitalisation amongst large NBFCs, large distribution footprint thanks to Reliance, and the ability to attract top talent thanks to its parent being one of the largest conglomerates of India, according to the report.<br /><br />The last part has already played out – KV Kamath has been appointed as an independent director on the board of Reliance Industries, and the non-executive chairman of Reliance Strategic Investments, which will house JFS. Kamath has played a key role in transforming ICICI into a diversified technology-driven financial services group. <br /><br />“The NBFC business model has been a treacherously difficult one for most conglomerates that have entered the space, with Bajaj Finance and Chola Finance being the standout exceptions,” the report said, but added that RIL’s hunger for scale can “pose a significant growth and market-share risk for players like Bajaj Finance and Paytm with whom it could be competing head-on.”<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Banks will be able to ward off the JFS challenge" comment="subhead" text="Banks will be able to ward off the JFS challenge"><span data-til="noop">Banks will be able to ward off the JFS challenge</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />On the other hand, JFS won’t be as much of a threat to banks, according to the research firm. “We believe JFS could compete more on the unsecured lending done by non-banking financial companies (NBFC) and fintechs than banks as it would be difficult to compete on risk-adjusted pricing to the kind of customers that banks cater to. Zomato and Nykaa did not deliver overall improvement in financials, but analysts remain optimistic. <br /><br />Another new age company among talks is hyperlocal delivery startup Dunzo with elevated losses and massive valuation. Billionaire and chairperson of RPG Group highlighted the financials of the company <a href="https://twitter.com/hvgoenka/status/1625843597626183680">in a tweet </a>on February 15. <br /><br />“New age digital stocks are not doing great primarily because the market is not doing great. India is underperforming this year with a negative 2.34 % return YTD while markets like China, HongKong and South Korea are doing very well. When India’s underperformance changes, new age digital companies also will start performing. Some results from this segment are very good like Paytm. Zomato also has done reasonably well, but Nykaa’s results came below expectations,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services.<br /><br />New age technology companies have been under the scanner because of the massive underperformance in their share prices due to elevated valuation. The growth was driven by pick up in merchant subscription revenues and loan distribution. <br /><br />“Biggest surprise is distribution business, control of cashbacks, opex,” said Macquarie in a report. Shares of the company rose nearly 22% from February 3 when it reported its quarterly earnings.<br /><br />Macquarie has upgraded rating on the company’s stock to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Underperform’ with a target price of ₹800.<br /><br />“PayTM has positively surprised on the distribution of financial services revenue by a wide margin and has also managed to control overall expenses and charges. At the time of listing, profit and free cash flow were not even a part of management’s discussion. However, we see a very visible change in approach of management to deliver profit, evidenced, we believe, by the core EBIDTA profitability that was reported recently,” said Macquarie in a report. <br /><br /><strong>Zomato: A promising road to profitability <br /></strong>Zomato reported better than expected Q3 FY23 revenues, and analysts believe it may reach profitability by the end of the current financial year.<br /><br />“Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. <br /><br />“Zomato’s road to profitability has grown even more promising. Zomato (ex-quick commerce) clocked adj. EBITDA level profitability in the month of Jan-23. Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” added the report. <br /><br />Analysts say Zomato’s relaunch of its Gold membership plan should bring growth back. Most brokerage houses have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/no-long-tail-effect-zomato-banks-on-demand-recovery-in-future-even-as-it-shuts-operations-in-225-cities-on-poor-performance/articleshow/97907071.cms">maintained a ‘Buy’ rating </a>on the company’s stock.<br /><br />“The fact that most of these companies have put forth their strategy to cut down losses and become profitable in the near future builds hope for investors. For example, Zomato’s decision to cut operations in 225 smaller cities. Moreover, since most of these <keyword id="10951575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-age-tech-companies" source="Orion">new age tech companies</keyword> are direct consumer based there are expectations of inflation cooling down and boosting consumer spend.” Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail) at Kotak Securities told Business Insider India.<br /><br /><strong>Nykaa: Premium valuation reflects solid outlook, say analysts <br /></strong>Nykaa, reported a 70% on year decline in net profit in Q3 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/nykaas-stock-plunges-4-2-after-its-q3-net-profit-slips-70/articleshow/97901748.cms">missing analysts expectations</a>. Despite this, brokerages believe the best is yet to come for the company. <br /><br />During a post-earnings conference call Falguni Nayar, executive chairperson, MD and CEO of Nykaa said that although inflationary pressures were present, it wasn’t that big of an issue for many of Nykaa’s customers. <br /><br />Q3 is considered to be a seasonal quarter for the company because of the festive season and despite macro challenges Nykaa’s growth was applauded by analysts. <br /><br />“In a quarter rampaged by a tougher macroeconomic environment, Nykaa reported substantial growth in Q3FY23 numbers,” said a report by JM Financial. The brokerage firm has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. <br /><br />“We continue to see increased strength of the dominant positioning in beauty and personal care (BPC) vertical while the newcomer, fashion vertical, has gained market share at the cost of a sharp dip in contribution margin,” added the report. <br /><br />Nykaa’s EBITDA margins came under pressure and fell to 5.3% in Q3, as against 6.3% in the same period last year. <br /><br />“While we expect Nykaa’s GMV growth, at 35% in FY23E-25E, to be the highest within our global ecommerce coverage, we believe Nykaa’s valuation premium (FY24 EV/GMV of 3.1x vs 0.5x median for peers) already reflects this solid growth outlook and Nykaa’s stronger margin profile,” said a report by Goldman Sachs. The investment banker has assigned a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. <br /><br /><strong>PB Fintech on course to profitability soon <br /></strong>The December quarter performance of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar, was another surprise for investors as the company narrowed its losses significantly. <br /><br />Its insurance premiums jumped 70.3% on year to ₹30.3 billion driven by a strong showing across segments.<br /><br />“Given its market share of 90%-plus in online insurance sales and a growing offline presence, PB is poised to post strong sales,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. <br /><br />Further, the management expects revenue and margins to improve further as agent productivity rises and benefits of appointments channel are realised. <ul><li>The Reserve Bank of India barred <keyword id="3236791" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank" source="Orion">Paytm Payments Bank</keyword> from taking on new customers last week.</li><li>A spokesperson of One 97 Communications, the parent entity of digital payments giant <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, has denied the allegations.</li><li>Paytm Payments Bank is a joint venture between Paytm and its founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma.</li></ul>The Reserve Bank of India <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/rbi-stops-paytm-payments-bank-from-opening-new-accounts/articleshow/90156814.cms">barred </a>Paytm Payments Bank from taking on new customers last week because it allowed its data to flow to servers that were sharing information with China-based entities, Bloomberg reported on Monday.<br /><br />“Annual inspections by the Reserve Bank of India [RBI] found that the company’s servers were sharing information with China-based entities that indirectly own a stake in Paytm Payments Bank,” the report <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-14/india-said-to-punish-paytm-bank-for-data-leaks-to-chinese-firms">noted </a>citing sources.<br /><br />A spokesperson of One 97 Communications, the parent entity of digital payments giant Paytm, has denied the allegations. The spokesperson has claimed that the report is “completely false” and “simple [sic] sensationalising”. <br /><br />“Paytm Payments Bank is proud to be a completely homegrown bank and is fully compliant with RBI’s directions on data localisation. All of the Bank’s data resides within the country. We are true believers of the Digital India initiative, and remain committed to driving financial inclusion in the country,” the spokesperson added. <br /><br />Paytm Payments Bank is a joint venture between Paytm and its founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma. It is important to note that Paytm Payments Bank is not included under the public offering of One 97 Communications, instead it is an associate entity. Paytm Payments Bank is the backbone behind several Paytm offerings including insurance, digital payments and lending.<br /><br />The company’s shares dipped over 12% on Monday, reaching an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/paytms-shares-hit-an-all-time-low-plunging-below-the-700-mark-after-rbi-pulls-up-its-payments-bank/articleshow/90193957.cms">all time low of ₹680</a>. The company is currently sitting on a market cap of ₹43,798 crore ($5.7 billion), which is nearly four times less than the $19.9 billion market cap the company was accorded during its initial public offering (IPO). <br /><br />The central bank had banned Paytm from onboarding new customers after noticing certain “material supervisory concerns”. Paytm Payments Bank denies report claiming it leaked data to Chinese firms

The company was last valued at $10 billion (₹76,094 crore) on January 10 versus $19.9 billion in its IPO.<br /><br />"Paytm’s payment business accounts for about 70% of revenue, which will be under threat if there are any regulatory changes . Also, its entry into insurance sectors has been rejected by regulators. The stock is trading at about 17 time FY23 sales which seems overvalued considering higher expenses and risk of attrition of senior executives," Manoj Dalmia, Founder and Director at Proficient Equities Private Limited, said.<br /><br />                          <div type="image" title="Not just small investors, even Alibaba-owned ANT Group and Softbank have lost money on Paytm" msid="88824685" hostid="261"></div><br />Alibaba, on the other hand, has reported a net profit of ₹3,727 crore ($500 million), since its average cost of acquisition of equity shares was ₹583 only. The company still has shareholding worth ₹4,701 crore ($635 million) in the company, calculated based on the January 10 closing price of ₹1,157. This could have been worth ₹8,736 crore ($1.1 billion), at the IPO issue price. Not just small investors, even Alibaba-owned ANT Group and Softbank have lost money on Paytm

This is 9% lower than the issue price of ₹2,150. And, analysts at Macquarie have warned that the stock may go down a lot more before it becomes attractive. <br /><br />Analysts at Macquarie, a global investment bank, have set the target price for Paytm at ₹1,200, that’s 44% below the price at which IPO investors got their shares. Macquarie cited the high price of the IPO and the intense competition from the likes of Amazon, Google and Flipkart for its pessimism around Paytm.<br /><br />“People ask me how do you raise money at such a high price? I say, I don’t raise money on a price but I raise money on a purpose,” said One97 Communications founder and chief executive (CEO) Vijay Shekhar Sharma in his address before the listing ceremony at the BombayStock Exchange.<br /><br />Paytm's shares were trading at ₹1,673 at 12:22 p.m., a discount of nearly 22%. The closing price for November 18 was ₹1564, which is 27% below the issue price.<br /><br /><strong>Paytm is still bigger than Britannia, Bajaj Auto and Zomato<br /></strong><br />The Noida-based Paytm listed at a market cap of ₹1,26,737 crore ($17 billion), which is nearly $3 billion lower than the $19.3 billion-$19.9 billion valuation of the public issue. <br /><br />The fear around the price had set in long before the listing. Paytm’s grey market premium (GMP) — a price at which the share prices are being traded at in the grey market — tumbled down from ₹130 on the first day of bidding on November 8 to a negative ₹30 on Wednesday (November 17). <br /><br />This means that the traders in the grey market are willing to buy the shares at ₹2,130, about ₹20 lower than the issue price.<br /><br />The initial public offering (IPO) by Paytm — owned by Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led One97Communication — is the biggest public issue India has ever witnessed and it surpassed Coal India’s public issue worth ₹15,000 crore executed a decade ago.<br /><br /><div type="twitter" handle="vijayshekhar" handlename="Vijay Shekhar Sharma" image="http://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/813598012173754368/MnHjJnCv_normal.jpg" favoritecount="2066" retweetcount="103" status="Man, I can feel for our cricket team! The remaining ₹10,000 crore was raised as offer for sale (OfS), giving partial exits to Alibaba’s Ant Group, Softbank and others.<br /><strong><br />Experts ask investors to wait it out before investing in Paytm's shares</strong><br /><br />Fresh investors should not invest in Paytm at the moment but wait for another 15 days for the stock to consolidate, Kranthi Bathini, Director - Equity strategy at WealthMills securities, told Business Insider.<br /><br />“Serious investors need to wait for a couple of earning quarters and not jump into stocks like what happened in Nykaa,” he added.<br /><br />Nykaa — which had a stellar debut on the stock market last week — crossed the ₹1 lakh crore market cap on the first day of listing. However, the company’s revenue declined to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/nykaa-will-spend-its-ipo-money-on-setting-up-retail-stores-and-repaying-loans/articleshow/84996894.cms">₹1.2 crore in the July to September quarter,</a> which is significantly lower than ₹27 crore it reported in the same quarter last year.<br /><br />Paytm received bids for 9.11 crore shares versus the 4.83 crore shares up for sale, which means that the issue was oversubscribed by 1.8X. According to a Bloomberg report <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/paytm-may-drop-its-pre-ipo-sale-as-advisors-recommend-lower-valuation/articleshow/87187525.cms">published in October</a>, Paytm was advised to go for a lower valuation than $20 billion in its pre-IPO round but the company decided to skip the round altogether. Even stock brokerage firm Macquarie had given Paytm a with an underperform rating, and projected that the stock may fall to as much as ₹1,200 (compared to an issue price of ₹2,150) any time in the next one year .<br /><br />Interestingly, Paytm was the highest valued Indian startup between 2019 to me this year. The company got a valuation of $19.9 billion in its public issue. It also offers wealth management solutions through Paytm Money and banking services through Paytm Payments Banks.The company has 333 million total customers, 114 million annual transacting users and 21 million registered merchants. <br /><br />Paytm has a strong market share in digital payments via the unified payments interface (UPI) but the margin is zero in peer-to-peer payments and wafer thin when merchants get paid. <br /><br />In the personal finance space ⁠— where Paytm sells mutual funds, gold and stocks ⁠— it has a less than 1% market share and makes zero commission, according to Macquarie. The company reported a revenue of ₹3,186 crore, with net loss of ₹1,761 crore. “Loss-making businesses will find it hard to sustain premium valuations,” Choksey added.<br /><br />Ravi Singh, head of research and vice president at ShareIndia, noted that Paytm’s future growth is a key to watch for long term investors. “We advise the investors after looking at the overall valuations and earlier losses of Paytm, to book their positions and wait for 1700-1600 levels for fresh investment. He wanted India to be as excited about his dream of a super app for anything that can be bought and sold online. <br /><br />But many others have argued that a smartphone itself is a super app. Another startup founder Kavin Mittal, the man behind the $1.4 billion Hike Messenger, had similar ambitions but found it to be a misguided goal and dropped the plan in January 2021. <br /><br />Will Sharma prove his detractors wrong with Paytm?
