<ul></ul><ul><li><keyword id="5325646" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Kumar-Saxena">Ashok Kumar Saxena</keyword>, who served as a director in <keyword id="2205155" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="One-97-Communication">One 97 Communication</keyword> between 2000-2004, alleged that he had invested in the company for a 55% shareholding. </li><li><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> in its submission to police confirmed that such a ‘letter of intent’ was signed, but it never materialised into a ‘definitive agreement’ as Saxena ‘lost interest’. </li><li>The digital payments giant has also reportedly claimed that allegations against Paytm are attempts to harass the company. </li></ul>Ashok Kumar Saxena, a former director in Paytm’s parent company One 97 Communications, is now urging India’s market regulator to stall the digital payments giant’s $2.2 billion initial public offering (<keyword id="6354763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo">IPO</keyword>). Saxena alleges that he is the co-founder of One 97 Communications and had invested about $27,500 in the company about two decades ago. However, the company never transferred his 55% shareholdings to him, as per Saxena. At the centre of the argument is a one-page document signed by Saxena and Paytm founder and chief executive Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2001. The document reportedly highlights that Saxena would get a 55% equity stake in Paytm's parent company One 97 Communications. The remaining 45% equity shares would be owned by Sharma. As per a media report, the former director of the company had reached out to market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). According to a media report, Saxena had also reached out to Delhi police to file a complaint against the company, but no case was registered. However, Saxena has now reportedly approached a New Delhi court, urging the judge to direct the local police to register a case on his complaint. The court had ordered the police to respond and the matter will be heard on August 23, as per the media report. Business Insider was not able to reach out to Saxena immediately. Paytm, in a legal document submitted to the Delhi Police, claimed Saxena's allegations against Paytm are attempts to harass the company, as per the Reuters report. The company has listed the dispute under 'criminal proceedings' in its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) for its IPO. Paytm in the documentation submitted to the Delhi Police, has reportedly agreed that Saxena was one of the first few directors in the company who served between 2000 and 2004. However, a company source has denied that Saxena was the co-founder of One 97 Communications. The document was accessed by Reuters. Business Insider has reached out to Paytm seeking comments. We will be updating the copy if and when we receive a response. The digital payments giant states that Saxena did extend funds to the company, however, he gradually “lost interest”. The company also emphasised that the letter being referred above was merely a “letter of Intent” and not a formal agreement. Paytm has also mentioned this in its legal statement to the police. Saxena had started disassociating himself from the company after the document was signed and stopped attending board meetings, Paytm said in the legal statement. Therefore, the intent never reached a full agreement. Paytm in the legal document also stated that Paytm and Saxena had reached a private understanding and transferred the shares to an Indian firm. Saxena said he had never received any shares and there was no misunderstanding. "The shares and money are one thing, but I also want to be recognised as the co-founder," Saxena told Reuters. Paytm IPO: Former One 97 Communication director urges SEBI to stall the public issue

<ul><li>The <keyword id="1736801" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-app">Paytm app</keyword> has been removed from the Google Play Store for violating policies related to unregulated gambling apps.</li><li>This does not affect those who already have the app installed on their phones, but new downloads are not possible at this moment.</li><li>Other apps from the company, like Paytm Money, Paytm Mall and Paytm for Business are still available for download.</li><li>Google said it is in touch with the app’s developers to bring it back on the Play Store.</li></ul>The Paytm app has been removed from the Google Play Store. The reason reported for the removal of the app is that Google doesn’t allow ‘unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting’. According to <a href="https://twitter.com/CNBCTV18Live/status/1306872648429785088">CNBC-TV18</a>, Google had notified developers about this a few days ago. It also said that it is working with Paytm to bring the app back on the Play Store. A search for the Paytm app on the Play Store confirmed the app’s removal. Other apps from the company like Paytm Money, Paytm Mall and Paytm for Business are still available for download. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="78187022" title="How to install the Paytm app on Xiaomi, Samsung and other phones" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> On September 18, Google released a <a href="https://india.googleblog.com/">statement</a> saying that it doesn’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. “This includes if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes, it is a violation of our policies.” "When an app violates these policies, we notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance. And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts. Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently," the blog post added. We have reached out to Google for a statement. Big blow to Paytm ahead of IPL starting tomorrow Paytm First Games – which recently onboarded Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador – is the Indian digital payments’ leaders foray into the fantasy gaming segment. Google’s ban is a huge blow to the app as the IPL begins tomorrow and Paytm First Games was hoping to cash in on the cricketing event. Paytm First Games had an elaborate plan to establish its stronghold in the fantasy gaming market. The app aims to get over 100 million users during the upcoming Indian Premier League and has planned over 200 live events on the platform over the next six months. The other popular fantasy sports app Dream11 has never been available on the Playstore. Last year in June, the Bombay High Court had dismissed a PIL filed by an advocate and said that Dream11 is a game of skill and not of chance. The PIL had claimed that the online fantasy league game encourages gambling. Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court too had declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal. The order said that the game requires considerable skill and judgment. This order was further ratified by the Supreme Court. Paytm app removed from the Google Play Store – big blow to Paytm First Games ahead of the IPL starting tomorrow

Digital wallet company <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> identified 48 fraudulent customers . Paytm was cheated to the tune of over Rs 6.15 lakh. The CBI has registered a case. 
 
This case raised doubts on security system on the digital wallet. In its complaint, Paytm elucidated 26 cases where a refund was claimed and processed after the delivery of goods was successfully made. 
 
“The technical analysis of the e-commerce service provider states that this cannot happen without involvement and knowledge of its employees,” the FIR said. 
 
"In the physical goods marketplace business, it was identified that certain fraudulent users were trying to unlawfully game the system. We have identified each of these cases and initiated legal proceedings," a Paytm spokesperson told Business Insider. 
 
Paytm said it regularly monitors its marketplace business to identify any fraudulent or suspicious behavior. "This is a part of the company’s security practices to ensure that genuine users are able to continuously avail the benefits brought by the Paytm marketplace," stated Paytm. 
 Paytm is garnering headlines, especially after demonetisation, and has made the most of cash ban since November 08. Paytm’s <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> promoted its digital wallet to enable people to deal sudden cash crunch. 
 
Paytm saw a 700% hike in its customer traffic. It hired 9,000 staff to move on with their payments bank and help achieve cashless India goals.

cases and investigations point out the same allegations of how Google unfairly controls what we search for, what we read, watch and purchase and a lot more. This prevents rivals with similar products from offering their services to customers. In addition to these cases, several countries are reconsidering regulations and policies. Australia made history this year by passing a law that requires companies such as Facebook and Google to pay local publishers for news. Google initially threatened to remove its search engine from Australia but it later struck deals with news publishers for news. Recently, another <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/apple-and-googles-ability-to-take-a-cut-of-every-app-purchase-is-in-peril-due-to-a-new-south-korean-bill/articleshow/85804681.cms">South Korean government</a> also passed a bill that would allow third-party payment systems on Google and Apple app stores. If the bill is signed then it would make South Korea the first country to impose a law on Google and Apple preventing them from forcing their own payment services on in-app purchases. Google and Apple both have been criticised for their 30% app store commissions through in-app purchases. In response to the backlash from developers, Google and Apple both reduced the 30% cut to 15%. Google actually deferred the Play Store policy to April 2022 after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/google-defers-30-play-store-app-fee-for-developers-in-india-till-march-2022/articleshow/78486826.cms">backlash from Indian startups</a> like Paytm. Google has also been facing an antitrust probe in India on allegations that the company prevents OEMs from making devices that run alternative versions of Android. Google’s requirement of pre-installing its apps was also found to be in violation of India’s competition law. Gebru was asked to retract a paper on the dangers of large language models which she refused to do so. Gebru said that she was fired but Google refuted this claim stating that she actually resigned. She also accused the company of racism and retaliation. Sachin Saxena was shocked. He was bound to be. In June this year, YouTube sent him a copyright violation notice (known as strikes on the platform) on one of the videos he made from scratch — from scripting to shooting and even editing. It has been four years since Saxena has been creating explainers related to technology and new-age businesses on YouTube. The video platform has really enabled him to create a stable source of income, while doing what he loves. Like anyone else would, he thought it would have been a mere misunderstanding and decided to approach the claimant in order to clear the air. But things took a turn for the worst. No, it was no misunderstanding. It was one of those blackmailing cases he had infamously heard about from his peers. US-based search giant Google’s video streaming platform YouTube has been very particular about copyright violations and has proactively taken steps to remove any such content that infringes on the rights of content creators. However, the approach has come to bite several small-time YouTubers on the back, as it has turned out to be a convenient tool for extortion. The person, Darshan Deewana Official aka Munna Singh or whoever you want them to be, sought $200 in exchange for removing the strike against Saxena. The alleged extortionist also threatened to issue more copyright strikes against the Uttar Pradesh-based <keyword id="2803176" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouTuber" source="Orion">YouTuber</keyword> in case he fails to make the said payment. But Saxena had done nothing wrong, apparently. So why should he pay to prove ownership over his own content? He decided to follow all due diligence and filed a counter notification (counter strike) claiming his ownership. But it wasn’t going to be an easy path. The alleged extortionist did exactly as he had said and issued four more strikes against Saxena over the next couple of days. These four strikes were issued over 11 videos, meaning there were a total of 11 copyright infringement cases concentrated in 4 strikes. He reached out to YouTube directly over email. He shared all the proof of ownership of the content, which he earlier couldn’t as YouTube’s <keyword id="11141113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="copyright-strike" source="Orion">copyright strike</keyword> or counter notification application mechanism/form do not allow any attachments or links apart from the flagged video itself. This time his request was accepted. Upon investigation, Business Insider found out that Sachin wasn’t the only one suffering from such fake copyright strikes. A simple Twitter search gave us a deeper look into the spread of such copyright strikes. While Saxena may have been able to sail past this successfully, many haven’t been able to do so and their accounts have been suspended. <div type="image" title="graphic 2: The great Indian YouTube extortion — 101 on how criminals are making money off YouTubers" msid="84494586" hostid="261"></div> All these copyright strikes may not be “fake” as claimed in the screenshots above, but it is an awful coincidence that so many small-time YouTubers, who had enough subscribers to be earning through the platform, are receiving such request from different accounts. But it is also true that YouTube does not require any documentation to file a strike, in this case a series of strikes, against anyone. So, anyone, without even a YouTube account, can flag your content as stolen. This is not the first time YouTube’s copyright strike mechanism has been used to extort money out of content creators. This policy has been exploited both in India and abroad. However, this time it is much more organised. Apart from the above-mentioned email ID, there have also been other IDs involved in this giving this ‘series of copyright strikes’. It was certainly not the first time that Darshan Deewana had reached out to young YouTubers either. One of the YouTubers, who paid this Darshan Deewana, said that his name would be removed from a list of YouTubers the extortionist had and no one would bother them again. “I decided to pay them so they don’t bother me again. I don’t want to go through this again,” the YouTuber added. Upon further investigation, Business Insider was able to create a chain of these “fake” copyright claims issued by Darshan Deewana end-to-end. The copyright strike would be issued by a “Munna Singh” registered with an email address of “Darshan Deewana Official”. Darshan would ask the YouTubers to transfer the ransom on a PhonePe account registered with another number. Why will YouTubers not reach out to YouTube directly? YouTube is not unaware of such instances and has set up a proper procedure in place to counter any copyright infringement claims filed by someone. Many YouTubers have highlighted that their counter notifications were rejected in the first attempt. Flagging the issues over email has a higher chance of approval. "YouTube's copyright removal process complies with the applicable law. We strive to be fair to our users and protect their freedom of expression while also respecting the legal rights of copyright owners. Based on a copyright claim raised by a copyright owner or an agent authorised to act on their behalf, users have the option to file a <a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2807684?hl=en">counter-notification</a> when they believe their content has been removed as a result of a mistake or misidentification of the content, including fair use. The process further requires the claimant to provide evidence that they have initiated a court action within a specified timeline. In the event of any misuse of our process, we take it seriously and overturn removal decisions where we find evidence that a removal request was submitted without considering exceptions to copyright law such as fair use, fair dealing or other exceptions," the YouTube’s spokesperson told Business Insider over an email. <div type="image" title="The great Indian YouTube extortion — 101 on how criminals are making money off YouTubers" msid="84494853" hostid="261"></div> Another key thing to note here is that YouTube, in its policies, mentions that they don’t mediate copyright claims. It is left to the parties involved to decide. It is not up to YouTube who “owns the rights” to content. Despite the availability of an elaborate mechanism, few YouTubers do not want to risk getting their accounts suspended. If by any chance YouTube finds the claimant’s claims to be accurate — true or not —, these YouTubers will have to either settle in court or out of it. That is going to cost them more money and time. But why is this issue important? With the growth of the digital economy, India has become one of the most prominent markets not only in terms of customer base, but also in terms of creators. Only 16 Indian content creators had more than 1 million subscribers in 2014, but the community has touched over 1,200 such creators in 2019. According to a digital marketing blog Digital Uncovered <a href="https://digitaluncovered.com/rise-indian-content-creators/">report</a>, about 2,500 Indian creators on YouTube cross 1,000 subscriber milestones every day. Overall, YouTube has at least <a href="https://www.omnicoreagency.com/youtube-statistics/">225 million</a> active users in India — that's more than 7 times the entire population of Canada. The rise of such extortion cases can not only have a major impact on the livelihood of YouTubers, but also on YouTube itself. The instances highlighted in this report are largely from Tier 2 regions of India, but are not limited there. Several reports in the past have highlighted such incidents in the US as well, but the cases continue to exist despite this. For people like Saxena, it is a question of livelihood.
