There have been several large initial public offerings (IPOs) over the years, from the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India to the payments platform Paytm. Still, nothing comes close to what Hyundai is looking for. There have been six IPOs so far in India above the ₹10,000 crore mark and their performance has left a bad taste in the mouth for investors. Five out of the six companies that have raised over ₹10,000 crore from their IPO have listed at a discount, making it difficult for investors to exit. Hyundai seems to be heading a similar way, as its grey market premium (GMP) has completely eroded, with investors being sceptical about the country’s biggest IPO. In addition to the huge amount that the company is looking to raise, aspects such as increased competition in the auto sector, poor sales over the past few months and the IPO being an offer for sale (OFS) have impacted the prospects. The ₹21,008 crore IPO, which had an upper price band of ₹949 was subscribed 2.95 times. On the listing day, LIC’s shares closed at ₹875.45, at a discount of ₹73.55, giving IPO investors a loss of 7.75%. <h3>Paytm</h3>The IPO of One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm is one for the history books. The company’s ₹18,300 crore IPO, which had an offer price of ₹2,150 closed at ₹1,564.15 on listing day, ₹585.56 less than the offer price, giving a listing day loss of 27.25%. <h3><keyword id="19903245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Coal India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Coal India">Coal India</keyword></h3>Coal India is the only exception to the list as it is the only company that opened higher than its offer price, giving investors a profitable exit. records</h2>While the above companies have created major records, they are expected to be soon broken. Korean automaker Hyundai recently filed the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in what would have been the country’s<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/hyundai-motor-india-files-draft-papers-with-sebi-for-indias-biggest-ipo/articleshow/111014559.cms"> biggest IPO</a>. The automaker plans on raising around $3 billion (₹25,000 crore) through its IPO. If the listing gets the nod from the regulator, it will be the country’s biggest IPO, beating the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India’s (LIC) $2.7 billion listing in 2022. However, even before the news could settle, news about<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/reliance-jio-ipo-mukesh-ambani-led-telco-might-be-gearing-up-for-indias-biggest-ipo/articleshow/111519009.cms"> Reliance Jio’s IPO</a> surfaced. As per existing rules, companies that are valued at ₹1 lakh crore or more need to sell at least 5% during an IPO. Jio is currently valued at $133 billion (₹11.11 lakh crore) as per Jefferies. A 5% stake sale would put the IPO at around ₹55,000 crore, beating LIC’s ₹21,000 crore IPO. This number could go further up by the time the company makes its stock market debut. The biggest IPOs in India’s history – LIC to Paytm, companies that have raised the most funds

Think Initial Public Offers (IPOs) are a sure-shot, quickfire method to make a quick buck? If so, then investing in some of India's biggest IPOs to date would have created multiple millionaires. However, if the data is to be believed, 18 out of India's top 30 IPOs by way of size have failed to deliver on the returns front. Recent data from Capitalmind PMS suggests that of all the mega IPOs India has seen in the past 2 decades, only 12 IPOs i.e. stocks of 12 companies have delivered more returns that what you would have received, had you bought and held your investments in Nifty500(which invests in biggest 500 companies by market size). Infact, Paytm (54%), <keyword id="20024191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Power" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Power">Reliance Power</keyword> (81%), General Insurance Corporation (2%) actually generated negative total returns to date. The only outliers in the list of top 10 IPOs were Zomato (listed in July 2021) and Coal India (listed in April, 2010), which managed to generate excess returns i.e. more than what was generated by Nifty500. While Zomato's total return to date, which is considered a comprehensive gauge of a stock's profitability, stands at 265%, Coal India total returns are a massive 443%. In these cases, had you simply bought and held the Nifty500 index for a similar duration, your returns would've been 73%, and 435% respectively. Also, 5 of the biggest IPOs India has ever seen (Bajaj Housing Finance, Bharti Hexacom, Brainbees, Ola Electric) have come in the last 2 years. In some cases, having stayed put in your index investments would have yielded you far better returns. Consider this, FSN E-Commerce, Nykaa's parent company, listed on the exchanges on November 2021. Its total returns till date have been 2%, while had you invested in Nifty500 index, your returns would've been 53%. Similarly, the total returns to date on Bandhan Bank's stock, which listed in March 2018, was a negative 43%. But, the index has delivered a whopping 163% returns during the same time. Not really </h2>It is impossible to overlook the sheer number of public offerings seen in the Indian markets over the past 2 years. Around 600 share sale offers have already hit the market since 2023. Out of these, 335 have come in this year, as of October 2024. While over Rs 50,000 crores have been raised by these share sales so far since 2023, only 22% of these funds raises have come from companies who are hitting the market for the first time i.e. bringing out their IPOs. The rest have come from already listed companies seeking to raise more funds. The biggest IPO that India has seen to date, that of <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India, closes for subscription today. With an offer size of Rs 27,870.16 crore, it is 35% bigger than the previous biggest IPO in the country(LIC in May 2022). As of 12:30 pm today, Hyundai's offer had been 87% subscribed, with significant interest from QIBs and employees. At 0.43x, participation of retail investors remained largely subdued. Notably, an IPO is considered cancelled and withdrawn, if it fails to meet the 90% subscription threshold.

Do large IPOs guarantee large returns? Data suggests that 18 of India's biggest 30 IPOs did not generate solid returns

Food and grocery delivery behemoth <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Zomato" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> declared its <keyword id="23466580" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2FY25-results" source="keywords">Q2FY25 results</keyword> today. The company's revenue from operations stood at Rs 4,799 crore, up from Rs 2,848 crore from the year-ago period. Zomato's GOV (gross order value) for its B2C business was at Rs 17,670 crore, a 55% YoY growth. On a like-for-like basis, i.e., excluding the impact of the acquisition of <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Paytm">Paytm</keyword>'s ticketing business, the GOV growth stood at 53% YoY. However, the company's <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> skyrocketed, jumping by 389% YoY. For the quarter ended September 30, 2024, Zomato's net profit stood at Rs 176 crore, significantly up from the Rs 36 crore level in the year-ago period. Ahead of the IPO of rival food and grocery delivery competitor <keyword id="19896956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiggy" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Swiggy" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Swiggy">Swiggy</keyword>, Zomato's board also approved the raising of Rs 8,500 crore through qualified institutional placement of equity shares. “While the business is now generating cash (vis-à-vis a loss-making business at the time of the IPO), we believe that we need to enhance our cash balance given the competitive landscape and the much larger scale of our business today,” said the company, explaining the fundraise. Additionally, in a letter to shareholders, Founder and CEO <keyword id="19901325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepinder-Goyal" source="keywords">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> shared that the "District" app, a new platform aimed at consolidating going-out services such as dining, movies, sports ticketing, live performances, shopping, and staycations, is expected to go live within the next month. "At this point, we are focused on making sure we do a good job at migrating the business from the Zomato and Paytm platforms to the new District app," Goyal added. During the reported quarter, Zomato made many notable acquisitions, which include Orbgen Technologies Private Ltd (OTPL) and Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd (WEPL). These were the holding companies of Paytm's' movie ticketing' business and events business, respectively. In the letter to shareholders, the company's Chief Financial Officer, Akshant Goyal, shared that its cash balance had reduced by Rs 1,726 crore as compared to the previous quarter, mainly on account of the deal consideration of Rs 2,014 crore for the acquisition of Paytm's entertainment ticketing business.". <keyword id="20069203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Blinkit" source="keywords">Blinkit</keyword>, Zomato's quick commerce business, saw a 129% year-on-year growth in adjusted revenues, which touched Rs 1,156 crore. Blinkit's gross order value (GOV) also saw a 122% year-on-year increase to Rs 6,132 crore. Blinkit saw massive improvements on almost all operational metrics. The average order value jumped from Rs 607 in the year-ago period to Rs 660 in Q2 FY25. The average GOV per day per store also inched up from 757 in Q2FY24 to 981 in Q2FY25. Similarly, orders also skyrocketed from 45.5 million in the year-ago period to 92.9 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2024. As for Zomato's <keyword id="20299302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery" source="keywords">food delivery</keyword> business, the average monthly transacting users also inched up from 18.4 million in Q2 FY24 to 20.7 million in Q2 FY25. The results did not do much to move Zomato's stock on the bourses, which fell by 3.44% during the day to close at Rs 256.55.

Zomato's net profit jumps 389% YoY, board approves Rs 8,500 crore fund-raise proposal

<keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyundai" source="keywords">Hyundai</keyword>'s mammoth Rs 27,870 crore <keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipo" source="keywords">IPO</keyword>, which will open for subscription between October 15-17, is set to be India's <keyword id="20459351" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="largest-IPO" source="keywords">largest IPO</keyword> ever, surpassing LIC's Rs 21,000 crore public offer, which came out in May 2022. This is also the first instance where an international giant (Hyundai Motor Group is based out of South Korea) will be listing its subsidiary (<keyword id="19908548" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai Motor India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai Motor India">Hyundai Motor India</keyword>) in an overseas market. Additionally, the company is also looking to raise Rs 8,315.28 crore from <keyword id="21330641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anchor-investors" source="keywords">anchor investors</keyword>, who will begin bidding on October 14th, 2024. Hyundai is the third largest auto original equipment manufacturer (OEM) globally, based on passenger vehicle sales. "We have been in India now for more than 26 years. We have a very high market share. We are at number two position in India in the passenger vehicle space. We have got so much love and affection from the people of India. So we believe this is the right time to take one step forward and even further Indianize our operations," Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) COO Tarun Garg told PTI in an interaction. Garg further added that the whole aim is to really become the most trusted brand of India. On being asked why they choose India for launching their IPO, he noted that the brand Hyundai has really been accepted very well in India, which is why it is probably the right country to really go for the IPO. Hyundai has set a price band of Rs 1,865-1,960 per share for the IPO, taking the company's valuation to Rs 1.6 lakh crore, or $19 billion. For <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword>, the minimum lot size is 7 shares, while the minimum investment amount is Rs 13,720. Out of the total issue, 35% has been reserved for retail investors, which will give them a fair shot at owning HMIL shares. Also, 7,78,400 shares have been allocated for employees, which will be offered at a discount of Rs 186 to the issue price. Most experts are suggesting subscribing to the IPO from a medium to long-term perspective. According to Bajaj Broking's IPO note, "The issue relatively appears fully priced, but the company is poised for bright prospects post completion of its ongoing expansions. The company reported PAT margins of 6.05% (FY22), 7.67% (FY23), 8.50% (FY24), 8.48% (Q1-FY25), and RoCE (return on capital employed)margins of 20.37%, 28.75%, 62.90%, 13.69% for the referred periods, respectively. We recommend to subscribe the IPO with a long-term perspective". Notably, the entire IPO is an <keyword id="19951016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OFS" source="keywords">OFS</keyword> (offer for sale) meaning that the company will not receive anything from this. Per Anand Rathi Wealth's IPO note, "HMIL follows a premiumization strategy, concentrating on selling higher-end trims with a higher average selling price (ASP) for their respective passenger vehicles. HMIL aims to align their EV strategy with market demands in India by carefully timing the launch of suitable EV models across various price segments. At the upper band company is valuing at 26.2x its FY24 earnings along with being valued at 26.7x if we annualize FY25 earnings. Following the issuance of equity shares, the company's market capitalization stands at Rs 15,92,581 million, with a market cap-to-sales ratio of 2.28 based on its FY24 earnings. We believe that the issue is fully priced and recommend “Subscribe –Long Term” rating to the IPO". <h2>History of large IPOs in India </h2>Back in 2007, DLF came out with the then-largest IPO, which was worth Rs 9,187.50 crores and saw 3.5x overall subscription. This was soon eclipsed by Reliance Power's IPO worth Rs 11,563.20 crore in January 2008. At 70X+subscription, it was massively oversubscribed in retail, QIB and HNI segments. The company managed to garner Rs 7.5 lakh crore as against its issue size of Rs 11,000 crore. Then came government's (GOI) disinvestment in Coal India in 2010, which had a book size of 15,199.44 crores. After a 10-year lull, Paytm's Rs 18,300 crore IPO broke this slumber in 2021. This was short lived because GOI decided to disinvest a small stake in LIC of India with a massive Rs 21,000 crore IPO in 2022, which was oversubscribed 2.95 times.

The company manufactures LRPC strands, steel wires, sheathing ducts, aluminium conductors and more. The company is looking to raise ₹54.58 crore from the market, which is completely a fresh issue and there is no OFS component. <h2>Macobs Technologies</h2>The third SME IPO this week is of Macobs Technologies, which produces products for male grooming and sells them online. The IPO will open on Tuesday, July 16 and close on July 19. The company is looking to raise ₹19.46 crore from the market, which is completely a fresh issue and there is no OFS component. Market regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords">SEBI</keyword> has issued notice to fintech firm <keyword id="20253123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="One97-Communications" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="One97 Communications" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="One97 Communications">One97 Communications</keyword>, which owns the <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords">Paytm</keyword> brand, for the employee <keyword id="20410988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-options" source="keywords">stock options</keyword> (<keyword id="20043663" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ESOPs" source="keywords">ESOPs</keyword>) allocated to MD and CEO <keyword id="20004114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="keywords">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword>, according to the company filing on Monday. In response to a query from stock exchanges, Paytm said the notice is not a new development, and it is in regulatory contact with the market regulator to make required representations. According to Paytm's financial year 2024 annual result filing, it had issued 2.1 crore employee stock options (ESOP) to Sharma in the financial year 2022. SEBI had issued a show cause notice to Paytm on ESOP issued to Sharma. "This is not a new development, as the Company had already made relevant disclosures on this matter in its financial results for the quarter and year ended March 31, 2024, as well as the quarter ended June 30, 2024. The Company is in regular communication with the <keyword id="19970553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities-exchange-board-of-india" source="keywords">Securities Exchange Board of India</keyword> (SEBI) and making necessary representations regarding this matter," Paytm said in response to a stock exchange query. The disclosure made on May 22 and July 19 said that Paytm has submitted its preliminary response and is in the process of seeking further information from the regulator in this regard. "Based on an independent legal opinion obtained by the management, it believes that the Company is compliant with the relevant regulations. Accordingly, there is no impact on the financial results for the year ended March 31, 2024," the filing said. Shares of One97 Communications Ltd, which owns the Paytm brand, on Monday dropped over 4% amid reports that SEBI has issued show-cause notices to Vijay Shekhar Sharma and board members who served during its IPO in November 2021 for alleged misrepresentation of facts. The stock tanked 4.41 % to settle at Rs 530.05 apiece on the BSE. During the day, it plunged 8.88 % to Rs 505.25. On the NSE, shares of the firm dropped 4.47 % to Rs 530. Intra-day, the stock tumbled 8.88 % to Rs 505.55. The company's market valuation declined by Rs 1,534.23 crore to Rs 33,731.56 crore. Earlier in the day, BSE sought clarification from One 97 Communications Ltd with reference to news that Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm directors face SEBI show-cause notices over initial public offering (IPO) breaches, particularly on ESOPs allotted to MD and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma. The company attributed the growth to GMV growth, device additions, and growth in the financial services distribution business. Since its IPO, when the company went public, it for the first full year EBITDA before ESOP profitability of Rs 559 crore, its earnings results released Wednesday showed. In the January-March quarter, however, Paytm reported a revenue of Rs 2,267 crore, a modest decline of 3 per cent year-on-year. "In Q4 FY 2024, we had lower marketing spends, as we paused most of the user growth spending in the month of February and March. We expect to reinvest in these areas in the coming financial year," Paytm informed stock exchanges. "While we experienced a financial impact in Q4 due to the above disruptions, the full financial impact will be seen in Q1 FY 2025." Paytm says it is confident of seeing meaningful improvement starting from Q2 2024-25, based on restarting certain paused products and achieving steady growth in operating metrics. In Q1 of the current fiscal, its focus will be on acquiring new merchants, reactivation of inactive merchants, and redeployment of devices from inactive merchants to new merchants. "While there will be a smaller net addition of device merchants in Q1 FY 2025, we expect net additions to improve from thereon and recover to past trendlines by Q3 FY 2025." Its revenue from payment services were up 26 per cent to Rs 6,235 crore; net payment margin was up 50 per cent to Rs 2,955 crore; gross merchandise value (GMV) up 39 per cent to Rs 18.3 lakh crore. Merchant paying subscriptions for devices have reached 1.07 crore as of March 2024, an increase of 39 lakh. Revenue from financial services and others up 30 per cent to Rs 2,004 crore; value of loans distributed was up 48 per cent to Rs 52,390 crore. Further, Paytm said that the active rate and per device subscription revenue has been impacted. Merchant subscription revenue in Q4 was Rs 90 per device per month and it expects it to bottom out at Rs 80 in Q1, post which it should increase towards Rs 100 by Q4 of the current fiscal. "We continue to address our merchants' needs through innovative product launches and are backed by a large distribution and service network. We recently launched two more "Made in India" soundboxes which are customized to the needs of our merchants, with louder speakers and longer battery life."
