It has been just over a year since India's mobile payments and Quick Response (QR) pioneer <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> made its debut on the stock market and the company has made quite an impression. The initial public offering (IPO), which was the largest in the country's history, drew attention from investors far and wide. Paytm's impressive growth has sparked the interest of savvy investors, both retail and institutional, who are clamouring to add more Paytm stock to their portfolios. As the fintech firm continues to make significant strides towards achieving operating profitability, investors' belief in the Paytm story and the company's long-term potential for success has grown stronger than ever. The company's latest shareholding pattern for the quarter that ended December shows that mutual funds increased their stake by 0.47 per cent to 1.73 per cent. Two new mutual funds entered the stock, taking the total mutual fund shareholders in Paytm from 19 to 21 in the December quarter. Meanwhile, more retail investors have also jumped on board, with their shareholding increasing by 3 per cent to 9.7 per cent. Over 70,000 new investors were added during the quarter, bringing the total number of retail shareholders to around 12 lakh. These developments are a clear indication that more Indians believe in Paytm's ability to deliver profitability without compromising on growth. The increase in domestic investors' shareholding is a vote of confidence in the company's future prospects. Global investment firm <keyword id="6361649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="goldman-sachs" source="Orion">Goldman Sachs</keyword> expects Paytm to be adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) positive by the March quarter, two quarters ahead of the estimates and the company's guidance of September 2023. Goldman Sachs has reiterated its 'Buy' rating for Paytm and has upwardly revised its share price target to Rs 1,120. The firm has stated that the current share price continues to offer a compelling entry point into India's largest and one of the fastest-growing fintech platforms. The increase in shareholding by domestic investors is also a positive sign for the Indian economy, as it shows that more and more Indians are investing in the country's rapidly growing fintech sector. An increase in retail shareholding can bring a number of benefits for a company. One of the most significant benefits is increased liquidity, which can help to stabilise the stock price and improve overall market sentiment. Retail shareholders also tend to have a long-term investment horizon and may be more likely to hold on to their shares, making the company more attractive to investors. The overall <keyword id="44528" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fdi" source="Orion">FDI</keyword> shareholding in Paytm has declined from 71.49 per cent to 66.12 per cent, mainly because of SoftBank offloading a 4.53 per cent stake. The Japanese conglomerate, through its <keyword id="4031888" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vision-fund" source="Orion">Vision Fund</keyword>, continues to own 12.92 per cent of Paytm. Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) holding in the company has gone up by 0.91 per cent to 6.68 per cent. The number of FPIs holding the Paytm stock has increased from 88 to 128 in the third quarter, representing a net addition of 40 investors. As a pioneer in India's fintech revolution, Paytm has been at the forefront of the country's technology-driven shift towards a cashless economy. When will Paytm start making money

<ul><li>On Friday, <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> was banned from the Google Play Store for over seven hours. </li><li>While Google released a statement it doesn’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting, Paytm had another story to tell.</li><li>By the end of the day, Paytm was back on the app store, however questions regarding the short ban on Paytm continued. </li></ul>On Friday afternoon, Paytm’s <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> and his thousands of employees were in for a rude shock – Paytm was banned from the Google Play Store, a day before the Indian Premier League is scheduled to start. By the end of the day, Paytm was back on the app store, however questions regarding the short ban on Paytm continued. Google released a statement it doesn’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. “This includes if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes, it is a violation of our policies,” said the company’s statement. However, Paytm had a different story to tell. Paytm said that its recently launched mode of gamification where after every transaction you get a scratch card with a cricket sticker (a player's image and name), was the reason for the ban. “If a user collects five stickers then you would get a cashback, it’s as simple as that. Out of the blue and for reasons best known to Google, they considered it gambling. Whereas, their own payment app runs a similar promotion where you get scratch cards and then get money from that. We are a bit surprised because of that,” a Paytm spokesperson told Business Insider. While Google in its statement said that when an app violates the policies, they notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance. “And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts,” it said. However, Paytm said that it was only today that it was notified regarding the scratch card ‘violation’. Earlier in the beginning of September, there was a different violation regarding Paytm First Games. “Today you can go and advertise about a fantasy gaming app on any other app but Google says that you can’t promote your own sister app. This meant that Paytm can promote any other app but not our own fantasy gaming app. This is drawing on the lines of anti-competitiveness. Today’s violation was absolutely Google’s single-minded understanding of what the game is. They clubbed it both under the same ‘policies’ violation whereas they are two different things,” said the spokesperson. ‘Google’s policies have to adhere to the law of the land’ Interestingly, Paytm First Games continues to exist in the Apple App Store, where it was launched a month ago. Google and Apple have different approaches towards fantasy gaming. While Google takes strict action against any game that is related to betting online, Apple doesn’t seem to have any qualms about that. In fact, Google allows fantasy gaming apps on the Play Store in the US. “Apple is a bit more liberal in their policies and hence more supportive of app ecosystems specifically when it comes to real money gaming. While Google allows fantasy gaming apps to be listed on the playstore in the US, what we are trying to ask is why an inferior treatment for apps in India,” said the Paytm spokesperson. Google’s removal of apps has often been questioned, even though the tech giant has always been clear about its processes to be followed by an app to be on the Play Store. <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/technology/news-mobikwik-digital-wallet-removed-from-google-play-store-here-is-why-621643#:~:text=Popular%20digital%20wallet%20MobiKwik%20was,exactly%20the%20payments%20platform%20do.">Earlier, </a>another payments app, Mobikwik, had been removed from the Play Store for not conforming to its ‘advertising rules’. “The more important thing that needs to be considered is that when our country is on the cusp of becoming a huge digital app ecosystem, how much is it possible to do when we have an entire ecosystem being ruled by policies which aren’t in coherence with the law of the land. If a simple scratch card can be read as gambling and of the larger apps out there Paytm can be banned, I’m actually worried about what happens to the smaller apps,” said the spokesperson. Business Insider reached out to Google for its response on specific charges made by Paytm but the spokesperson said that the tech giant has nothing more to add to its earlier statement. INTERVIEW: Paytm trains its guns on Google while the payments app is back in Play Store

<ul><li>Gamezop is a multigame platform that allows users to play games with a single tap and without installing any apps.</li><li>Between last year and now, Gamezop has had an impressive growth, it has tripled its revenues and user numbers.</li><li>We speak to <keyword id="3248633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yashash-Agarwal">Yashash Agarwal</keyword>, CEO and Founder, Gamezop who tells us that in 2020, nearly 400 million Indians played mobile games and nearly 272 million of those played on Gamezop. He tells us about the platform's journey so far.</li></ul>The Indian gaming market is headed towards explosive growth in the next four years, according to a recently released report by KPMG. According to its reports, ‘Beyond the tipping point – A primer on Casual gaming in India’, overall online casual gaming sub-segment in India stood at a size of Rs 60 billion in FY21 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of29% over FY21-25, to reach a size of Rs 169billion. The opportunities in the segment are massive and in the last few years, we have seen an impressive amount of e-gaming platforms come to the fore and engage with people. However, it is not just the likes of Dream11 and MyCircle11 that are helping the segment grow. Over the years, many of us have come across gaming sections added to different websites and publications and most of us have ended up spending much more time on these websites than we otherwise would have, thanks to the gaming sections that are simple to play. Homegrown multi-games platform Gamezop is one such platform that is behind a lot of the gaming sections you see on many non-game websites and apps. Over the years, the platform has built a robust business model where it does not have to spend anything on creating the games it hosts, and is yet able to engage with close to 40 million players ever month. This has also given advertisers an opportunity to target an engaged set of audiences on Gamzop’s platform. Gamezop had also raised Rs 32 crore in a funding round led by <keyword id="9833412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitkraft-ventures">Bitkraft Ventures</keyword> in August last year. We recently caught up with Yashash Agarwal, CEO and Founder, Gamezop, who told us how the platform has been building its business, steadily increasing the number of platform it hosts on while also becoming profitable. Excerpts: Q) Walk me through the journey of Gamezop. How did it come into being, what was the gap in the market you were trying to fill? Gamezop was started when we realized that the experience of getting into casual games was too cumbersome owing to the necessity for installing each game as an app first. Before YouTube was launched in 2005, each video was downloaded as a file and played on a media player. That is exactly where smartphone gaming is today:games need to be installed individually, which is extremely frictional. Gamezop makes games instant, like YouTube does with videos. On our game center, users play games just like they play videos: with a single tap and without the need to install apps. Q) What kind of growth have you witnessed in the past few months? You are already profitable? Gaming companies around the world have seen their heyday in the past few months with people spending so much time indoors. Between last year and now, we have tripled our revenues and user numbers. The interesting thing about our business is that we are growing while being profitable. We have kept our unit economics quite disciplined and our Series A last year hasn’t changed that. Q) How does Gamezop work? Where do users find you? Gamezop is a multigame platform that works very unconventionally to acquire users – rather than pushing app installs of games, we embed our game centre within non-gaming apps and websites, allowing their users to play games instantly. This way, we do not have to spend money to acquire users inorganically but can piggyback on the distribution of other products. The idea is to not push another product to users but meet them within popular apps and websites which they are already using. Q) How do apps and websites using your platform benefit? Apps and websites that integrate our game centre see their engagement levels going up immediately. This is because our entire offering can be consumed by users within these products. Let’s say an OTT platform adds a gaming section within their product through our game centre. Naturally, users who have affinity for gaming will now start spending additional time on the platform because they will engage in two forms of content and not just one. You will find our games within numerous news, media, and entertainment products, including all key <keyword id="6356641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-of-India">Times of India</keyword> properties, <keyword id="3163762" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="SonyLIV">SonyLiv</keyword>, Amazon, MSN, Goibibo, and <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword>. Q) How many apps and websites have integrated your platform? What kind of user base do you have currently through your network? Over 2,800 products have Gamezop powering games for their users. This allows us to entertain over 40 million users each month. In 2020, nearly 400 million Indians played mobile games; 272 million of those played on Gamezop. Q) Are your games non-intrusive or can ads be put into the games too? We can run brand promotions within our games in a non-intrusive manner. No ads appear during the gameplay. However, in breakthrough moments such as when the game is loading or the user has crossed a level, we see that the users have very high attention. This is where we place brands and allow them to tell their story. Q) Is your platform available internationally too? More than 50% of our revenues come from outside India. Our games have actually done very well internationally. Q) What are a few factors that have helped take you where you are? Are there more such platforms available or do you have the first-movers' advantage? Users don’t need to download newspapers as PDFs or music as mp3 files. They are able to consume these forms of content online. However, users had to download gaming apps to play games. As Gamezop removed this friction of installing gaming apps, it genuinely solved a problem for the users which has played a big hand in its growth. There are various gaming platforms out there. Not everyone is looking to deliver high-quality gaming experiences within third-party products. Q) E-gaming is witnessing impressive growth in India. Do you have plans of diversifying your offering, work closely with game developers and launch your own games in the future? We have truly amazing developers making games for the Gamezop game centre so the need to do it ourselves hasn’t arisen. Q) How have you been helping the developer community? How does this community benefit from being a part of Gamezop? Gamezop is truly excited to be able to play role in nurturing the gaming ecosystem. There are over 300 games on Gamezop that we have acquired from over 75 developers. With these developers, our relationship is anything but transactional. We work very closely with them right of ideating the game to finally launching it on our platform. We are happy to say that we have opened a new stream of monetisation for these game developers and are determined to deepen our relationships with them. The success of Gamezop is closely tied to the success of the game developers. We have a robust community of engaged game developers where ideas and exchanged. A well-knit network of professionals always raises the bar for everyone. Q) How are you different from other gaming platforms? How big is your team? Are you also looking for funding? Smartphone gaming is tied to pushing installs of apps, and most gaming platforms seem comfortable with that. With our approach of having a game centre for instant games, we are challenging the status quo. We have a 75-member team. We raised our Series A round last year led by Bitkraft Ventures. We have been growing profitably since and do not see a need to raise capital at the moment. Q) What is your vision for Gamezop? Just like using Gmail or Facebook is the default log-in method for most apps, Gamezop wishes to be the default entertainment section within apps around the world.

After Paytm was removed from the Play Store for about seven hours on a Friday, founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma had gone on record to say that Google was acting like the “<a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/google-is-judge-jury-executioner-paytm-hits-back-after-play-store-takes-down-app/story/416522.html">judge, jury and executioner</a>”. Paytm released a blog on September 20 (Sunday) stating all that happened on Friday and said that “suddenly UPI cashback is called an “online casino” by Google”. Fighting back, Google has released a fresh statement on September 21 (Monday) saying that “offering cashbacks and vouchers alone do not constitute a violation of our Google Play gambling policies”. It also let out a warning in its statement. “Last week we reiterated our Play Store gambling policies. Our policies don’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting, including daily fantasy sports in India. We enforce our policies very thoughtfully to provide a safe and secure experience for consumers, while also giving developers the platform and tools they need to build sustainable businesses. In the case of repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts. Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently,” Google said in a statement on Monday. The ‘policy’ in controversy While Google continues to say that the violation is regarding fantasy gaming promotions, Paytm has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/paytm-trains-its-guns-on-google-while-the-payments-app-is-back-in-play-store/articleshow/78190088.cms">had a different story to tell. </a> Paytm said that its recently launched mode of gamification where after every transaction you get a scratch card with a cricket sticker (a player's image and name), was the reason for the ban. “The Google Play Support team had written to us on 3 occasions (on August 20th, August 28th and September 1st) with some concerns on a separate matter of Paytm First Games’ promotion through the Paytm app. While we strenuously disagreed with the allegation that we are breaching the policy (and we disagree with the policy itself too), we immediately complied with the diktat that barred us from promoting our gaming subsidiary,” Paytm wrote on its blog. The move by Google has been questioned by many in the Indian startup ecosystem with even Paytm suggesting that it was on the lines of ‘anti-competitiveness’. The digital payments startup even went on to compare its own cricket-driven cashback program to that of its competitor Google Pay’s ‘Tez Shots’ campaign which runs on similar lines. “Presumably, such cashback campaigns of Google Pay are not in breach of Play Store policies, or maybe they are, but a different set of rules apply to Google’s own apps,” said Paytm. Google hits back at Paytm ⁠— reiterates that ‘repeated policy violations’ will lead to stricter actions

<ul><li><keyword id="7826063" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-first-games">Paytm First Games</keyword> has launched into another esports parternship with Garena.</li><li>PFG will be hosting its very first <keyword id="9092465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="free-fire-india">Free Fire India</keyword> Solos (FFIS) tournament in May and June.</li><li>The platform has been adding nearly 75,000 players on its gaming arm on a daily basis during the lockdown period.</li></ul>If you’re a fan of multiple battle royale games that you can win by being the last man standing, then you’ve probably heard of Garena’s Free Fire. <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> First Games (PFG) is now going to host its first Free Fire India Solos (FFIS) tournament on its platform in May and June. “The action-packed tournament is going to be a tremendous opportunity for Indian gamers to compete at a national level,” said Sudhanshu Gupta, the chief operating officer (COO) of PFG. Known for being the gaming avenue where you can play games and earn some money as well, PFG has been aggressively trying to build inroads into the esports arena. Paytm is going hard on gaming tournaments during the Coronavirus lockdown Although Paytm is commonly known for its online payments and digital wallet facilities, it’s been gaining traction on the gaming front as well. Its gaming arm entered the year with 45 million registered users and total time spent on the platform cumulatively adds up to <a href="https://blog.paytmfirstgames.com/year-in-review-paytm-first-gamestats-2019/">7,700 years. </a> Now, it has more than half a million daily active users (<a href="https://blog.paytmfirstgames.com/year-in-review-paytm-first-gamestats-2019/">DAUs</a>), who spend up to 45 minutes per session, according to the company. As most people are forced to stay home during the lockdown, Paytm First Games saw a sudden surge of 200% growth in March with over 75,000 new users joining the platform every day. “Esports is already growing really fast in India. With the circumstances like what we are going through now with COVID-19, it is adding more fuel to the fire,” said Gupta. In a first, PFG and Supercell announced a partnership to host a Clash Royale tournament in India — a joint venture between Alibaba Group’s AG Holdings and One97 Communications. This was the first time that Paytm dipped its toe in the esports arena. According to Gupta, the company only expected around 500 players to show up for the Clash Royale esports tournament. Instead, over 11,000 people signed up and the finals attracted an audience of over 70,000 viewers. Earlier this month, on April 14, the mobile game platform teamed up with another player — Singapore’s Esports Players League (ESPL) — to host competition. ESPL is creating an esports tournament and media network, starting with esports competitions in Asia, which will now include hosting games on Paytm First Games. This works out well because even though ESPL eventually wants to cover all platforms, it’s immediate impetus is on mobile. With shopping and payments dropping as more people stay home, pushing on gaming is one way that Paytm can make up for its losses. India is still in the early stages of the esports revolution, but it looks like Paytm has plans to be an important part of that growth story.
