<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="704178" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vineet-Kaul">Vineet Kaul</keyword>, VP, <keyword id="7846920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-education">Paytm Education</keyword>, talks about all the segments in <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> that they are focusing on. </li><li>The platform which started off enabling fee payments online saw a billion dollars worth of transactions last year.</li><li>They have already cracked more than 10,000 partnerships. </li></ul><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> Education – a part of the Paytm family – has already found a strong footing in the ₹1,000 billion education sector. The platform which started off by enabling fee payments online saw a billion dollars worth of transactions. They are now growing from being just a payment enabler platform to offer an umbrella of services. They already have more than 10,000 partnerships in their kitty and are building products across commerce, payments, financial services and marketplace. “Deep dive is a very normal and natural process for us, the way we did with payments (even though it’s a stack), travel and more. Education is a massive opportunity for us,” Vineet Kaul, VP, Paytm Education told Business Insider on the sidelines of the India Education Entrepreneurship Day organised by TiE Delhi. Kaul broke down the several sectors within education that Paytm is entering. Fee transactions – already a billion dollar platform The payments segment was the obvious first choice for Paytm Education by offering its fee payment business and also point-of-sale devices on campuses. Online application – From nursery to government exams Through commerce, Paytm Education is hoping to turn applications online. Kaul gives the example of forms for nursery education in India, for which parents have to stand in long queues. “Now they can do everything online. We are contacting as many schools as possible, parents can also see schools nearby and apply for a number of schools through a single form,” said Kaul. This is also applicable for engineering and government exams. “A lot of the applicants don’t have access to a computer. We are trying to ease out the processes and are also working with the government,” said Kaul. Fee protection – a first in the country Through financial services, Paytm Education is offering co-branded smart debit card for students which also gives them an early taste of financial literacy. “We have also come up with insurance for students. Fee protection for students and that’s a first in the country. Due to unforeseen circumstances, if something happens to the source of income of the parent or guardian, education wouldn’t come to a grinding halt,” said Kaul. In addition, Paytm also wants to enter the crowded coaching business. They are working on a marketplace model where they are democratising the process of choosing a coaching institute.

Paytm Education saw transactions worth a billion dollars last year and now wants more

<ul><li><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> aims to garner a GMV of ₹20,000 crore in FY 2020 from its <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> vertical. </li><li>It will offer services across payments, commerce, financial and academia to students, parents and government job aspirants.</li><li>It has already partnered with the Railway Recruitment Board, Indian Navy, IITs, IIMs, NITs and more.</li></ul>Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the Founder of Paytm truly wants it all. The leading digital payments unicorn has now set its sights on the education sector. It will offer services across payments, commerce, financial and academia to students, parents and government job aspirants. Paytm wants a piece of the ₹100,000 crore education sector pie. And believes that it can gain Gross Merchandise Volume of ₹20,000 crore in 2019-20, from education alone. The digital payments company is not just offering services for payments but many more to help students. “Right from providing details on 25,000 colleges, schools, courses and exams, our bouquet of services will include – payments (in-app and in educational centres), commerce (coaching, scholarships, test preparation, admission forms etc.) and financial services (student insurance, educational loans, easy EMI, and banking),” said Vineet Kaul, Senior Vice President - Paytm. To enable this, the company has partnered with Railway Recruitment Board, Maharashtra Public Service Commission, National Testing Agency, Indian Navy, Amity, VIT, Manipal, AKTU, Army Public Schools, Delhi Public Schools, Delhi University, IITs, IIMs, NITs, Aligarh Muslim University, AIMA, ICAI, Narayana Group, Career Launcher, Made Easy, Career360 and several others. Paytm already offers options to schools and colleges to accept fees via Paytm app. It is now hoping to bring onboard 350 million more users from 20,000 private schools, 1,000 higher educational institutes and 1,000 coaching institutes. The Indian education sector is expected to reach a size of $5.7 billion by 2020. The sector is also brimming with startups like the unicorn Byju’s, Unacademy and more. They have been raking in users, business in addition to attracting investors.

Paytm education will help students and government job aspirants with education loans and coaching

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> acquired online education startup <keyword id="1066163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edukart">Edukart</keyword> and absorbed the team of about 50 employees. EduKart's founder Ishan Gupta has joined Paytm as Vice President-Business and will build a seller services ecosystem for merchants on Paytm which will include financing, marketing, packaging and fulfilment services. 
 
The deal involves only employment contract so far. 
 
“There is no cash consideration for the deal, and EduKart is separately in talks for a strategic sale of its assets like brand, website and content with education companies,” Gupta told ET. 
 Paytm founder <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> is one of the first angel investors in Edukart, which was founded in 2011. The startup raised $2 million in funding from cricketer Yuvraj Singh-backed <keyword id="2797838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouWeCan-Ventures">YouWeCan Ventures</keyword>, early-stage fund 500 Startups and family office United Finsec. 
 
As per EduKart, it has more than 10,000 paid students on its platform and partnerships with more than 120 course providers. 
 
"We just wanted to grow faster, but as the markhit a funding winter we wanted to be cautious. And we thought the team could do better as part of a larger ecosystem," Gupta told ET.

Paytm buys online education startup Edukart in no cash deal

<ul><li><keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> has planned a major push for the company and its partners.</li><li>It aims to focus on the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.</li></ul>Paytm has announced that the company and its partners will allocate ₹100 crore for marketing activities during the <keyword id="36208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season" source="Orion">festive season</keyword>. These campaigns will be aligned to promote digital payments in India and educate users about Paytm UPI for money transfers, <keyword id="3032681" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-wallet" source="Orion">Paytm Wallet</keyword> and Paytm Postpaid (Buy Now, Pay Later) for spends, to drive financial inclusion across the country. The company has also announced “Paytm Cashback Dhamaka”, a cashback festival starting from October 14, where users can win cashback for money transfers, online, offline payments or recharges done through the app. The idea is to bring exciting offers and drive the adoption of Paytm’s digital payment instruments to more and more users across the country. The program will be rolled out across all districts in India — from merchant partners’ stores to large retail outlets, as well as online platforms. There will be a special focus on the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. During the peak festive season (October 14-November 14), everyday 10 lucky winners will win ₹1 lakh each, 10,000 winners will get ₹100 cashback, while another 10,000 users will win ₹50 cashback. Closer to Diwali (November 1-3) users can win upto ₹10 lakh daily. Users also stand a chance to win an iPhone 13, tickets for the T20 World Cup, shopping vouchers from top brands like Levi’s, Leaf headphones, among many others, and many more exciting rewards. Paytm sets aside ₹100 crore for marketing campaigns during festive season to promote UPI, postpaid and wallet businesses

<ul><li><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> users received push notification saying it is charging extra for adding money to its wallet.</li><li>The company released a statement to say that it doesn’t currently charge extra for adding credit or debit cards, and doesn’t plan to do so either. </li><li>Paytm had clocked in a gross transaction value of $50 billion through 5.5 billion transactions in the financial year 2018-19.</li></ul>On Thursday afternoon (June 27), Paytm users got a push notification which said that their transactions to add money to their wallets through credit cards will be charged at 2%. Following this, there were reports that all transactions – debit or credit – would be charged, to recover from the cash burn. However, Paytm clarified that it does not levy any convenience/transaction fee. “We would like to clarify that Paytm App/ Payment Gateway does not charge or levy any convenience/ transaction fee from our customers on using any payment method which includes cards, UPI, net-banking, and wallet. Paytm customers will continue using all the services available on the platform without any fee (same as before),” the company said in a statement. It also went on to warn users of educational institutes or organisations which do not want to bear <keyword id="6368202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card">credit card</keyword> charges and thus, shrug it off to the consumers by asking them to pay for the same. Paytm clocked in a gross transaction value of $50 billion through 5.5 billion transactions in the financial year 2018-19. It has also set a target of 12 billion transactions by FY20. It currently holds over 50% of the market share in the payment gateway industry. The company also said that as many as 400 million transactions take place on its platform every month. Paytm denies charging fee for adding money to its wallet

Paytm is offering no fees currently for developers to list and distribute their apps on the platform. According to the company’s statement, over 300 app-based service providers such as Decathlon, Ola, Park+, Rapido, Netmeds, 1MG, Domino's Pizza, FreshMenu, NoBroker have already joined the program. The development comes as many recent moves from Google have put Indian startups in a tough spot. It began with Paytm being removed for a few hours from the Play Store. Google had said that Paytm violated rules regarding fantasy gaming promotions. This was followed by Google rolling out new payment policies where developers would have to pay a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/google-plans-to-shut-the-loophole-that-lets-netflix-spotify-and-tinder-avoid-paying-its-30-app-tax/articleshow/78383294.cms">30% tax</a> on all in-app purchases and even included entertainment, education, dating, and fitness apps in the list. Vijay Shekhar Sharma fires the shots – Paytm launches its own Android mini-app store to take on Google

In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Purohit said this won’t have been possible if not for his boss. “Vijay has been a mentor from Day 1. Rarely do you find a boss who acts like a pillar of strength and motivation to achieve your goal”, he gushes. 
 
According to a <a href="http://techcircle.vccircle.com/2016/06/08/exclusive-paytms-payments-bank-vp-vikas-purohit-quits/">report</a>, Purohit’s last day at the company is this week. This comes at a time when the mobile wallet and <keyword id="35621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> firm is on full throttle to launch its own payments bank. 
 
“We’re working on the product and the investor side. It’s based on machine and digital learning to enhance the digital customer experience”, he says. 
 When asked about Sharma’s role in his <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">entrepreneurship</keyword> plans, Purohit says, “This was just an idea. I remember it was late in the night, and Vijay was leaving for home. I told him I wanted to have a chat. A three hours marathon session later, I was convinced I should start something of my own. Today, even as I’ve moved out, I know he’s there. I’ll come back once every month for feedback.” 
 
Purohit claims he’ll launch his product/service by the end of the year.

Have you ever missed your bus but got your booking amount back? You might have thought that this never happens in this country. But mobile wallet and ecommerce company Paytm is here to prove you wrong. So the next time you miss your bus, you will most definitely get your money back. The Delhi based startup, which has forayed into various kinds of businesses is now planning insurance covers for bus passengers against a range of risks, such as accidents, missed travel, cancellation of ticket and loss of baggage.

	“We are in talks with (insurance) companies to provide insurance cover for bus passengers," said Shankar Nath, Paytm's senior vice-president. "At the same time, we are talking to various private bus hiring services like AP travels." <o:p></o:p>

	Just like domestic air travel comes insured, the passengers in this case would be a given an option to choose the insurance, if they desire. The bus fare will be bundled with the premium. <o:p></o:p>

	Around 30,000 tickets are booked daily on Paytm's platform. The average fare is 500.<o:p></o:p>

	Travel insurance business in India is worth Rs 400-500 crore and the cover is mostly taken by those who travel abroad. While the government is talking to insurance companies to introduce personal accident and baggage loss cover to railway passengers, the bus travel segment is yet to open up to the idea.<o:p></o:p>

	"There is not enough education and the risk perception is very low," Sanjay Datta, head of motor insurance underwriting at ICICI Lombard General Insurance told the ET. "Domestic travel insurance is a negligible business."<o:p></o:p>

	For domestic air travel, the premium is around 150 and the policy is valid for 30 days or till the date of return journey for passengers between the age group of 1 and 70.<o:p></o:p>

	When travelling overseas, people usually see travel insurance as a short-term medi-claim, to cover treatment towards any injury or illness suffered while they are abroad.<o:p></o:p>

Education has a big role to play in India’s $5 trillion economy dream

Startups are unaffected by getting banned and are recruiting top talent at IIT placements this year. Regardless of the fact that many of the startups are being blacklisted by the institutes, many international companies that have just started in India are providing the students great offers and some big recruiters' individual hiring numbers. 
 Many like <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> are amongst the blacklisted ones, their rival likes <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> are hiring aggressively at several <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword>, and commanding premium slots in placements along with the likes of logistics startup <keyword id="3932850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rivigo-services">Rivigo Services</keyword> and enterprise software developer CodeNation. 
 Amazon is planning to visit 17 <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> this year and is looking forward to hiring more engineers than last year. It is making its first Jodhpur, Indore and Bhubaneswar IITs. 
 "We firmly believe that as we expand and grow in the country, talented engineers from these institutes will play an instrumental role in driving Amazon's growth in India. We continue to be aggressive in our hiring outlook as we scale up our operations in India,” <keyword id="662878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Raghavan">Raj Raghavan</keyword>, HR director for APAC at Amazon, told ET. 
 
Paytm, after being benefited by the government’s demonetisation scheme, is now looking forward to increasing its intake from IITs this year. 
 "Paytm is expanding quickly and we are constantly on the lookout for talent to help us keep the momentum,” <keyword id="214729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Sinha">Amit Sinha</keyword>, senior VP at Paytm, told ET. 
 
The Noida-based ecommerce and digital payments provider has hired from Guwahati, Roorkee, Madras, Bombay and Varanasi (BHU) IITs this year. Besides these biggies, several smaller startups, too, have joined the rush to attract top talent from the country's premier engineering campuses. 
 
"Startups are far from disappearing from the campus. For us, they hold a good share in the placements this year. Where 55 startups have registered for placements this year, up from 50 last year, and they've already handed out more offers than last year,” NP Padhy, professor-in-charge for training and placement at IIT Roorkee, told ET. 
 
There are many new comers in the placement league and the list includes Smartprix, FlyNava Technologies, Clustr, Hike and Buyhatke. 
 
"There are still many startups coming. While most hire in small numbers, they still find takers, especially among students who have a risk appetite,” a senior person involved in IIT placements, told ET. 
 
The IITs also blacklisted a list of startups over a list of numerous reasons. Despite some startups revoking offers in previous years, several students are still eager to join such firms. 
 "Students are now more aware about the uncertainties associated with startups, and more informed. Many are eager to join them, especially those who want to start something of their own in the future and want to gain the experience,” B Venkatesham, placement-in-charge at <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword>, told ET. 
 
Even in campuses where the number of startup recruiters is less than last year, such firms are among the popular recruiters. IIT Madras has given premium slots to companies such as Amazon, Next Education, CodeNation, Rivigo Services and Paytm in the placement process.

<ul><li>Indian developers and startups are building an alliance to consider launching their app store – going against the tech giant <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>.</li><li>Google’s recent rollout of new payment policies where developers would have to pay a 30% tax on all in-app purchases, did not bode well with Indian startups. </li><li>Google has also sent violation notices to startups like Paytm, Swiggy, and Zomato for their in-app gamification concerning IPL.</li></ul>Indian developers and startups are getting together for a revolt of sorts – by building an alliance against the tech giant Google. According to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/09/30/indian-startups-explore-forming-an-alliance-and-alternative-app-store-to-fight-googles-monopoly/">reports</a>, the likes of Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma, MakeMyTrip’s Deep Kalra, and many other startup founders are forming an alliance to consider an <keyword id="10031407" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-app-store">Indian app store</keyword>. The development comes as many recent moves from Google have put Indian startups in a tough spot. It began with Paytm being removed for a few hours from the Play Store. Google had said that Paytm violated rules regarding fantasy gaming promotions. Google had said that “offering cashbacks and vouchers alone do not constitute a violation of our Google Play gambling policies”. It also let out a warning in its statement that further violations will make for stricter actions. Sharma had then gone on record to say that Google was acting like the “<a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/google-is-judge-jury-executioner-paytm-hits-back-after-play-store-takes-down-app/story/416522.html">judge, jury and executioner</a>”. It was followed by Google rolling out new payment policies where developers would have to pay a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/google-plans-to-shut-the-loophole-that-lets-netflix-spotify-and-tinder-avoid-paying-its-30-app-tax/articleshow/78383294.cms">30% tax</a> on all in-app purchases and even included entertainment, education, dating, and fitness apps in the list. Although the tech giant had said this policy is only applicable to less than 3% of developers with apps on Google Play, the Indian developer community didn’t seem too happy about it. Both the startups received notices for their cashback and offer related to the IPL for promoting in-app gamification. Zomato confirmed the development to <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/google-sends-notice-to-swiggy-zomato-for-violation-of-play-store-guidelines/78407479">ET</a> and said, “We are a small company and have already realigned our business strategy to comply with Google’s guidelines.
