The company's PAT (profit after tax) stood at Rs 930 crore. Notably, without this windfall gain, Paytm's finances would still be in red, with the company racking up losses worth Rs 415 crore. Paytm was in red in the year-ago period as well, incurring losses worth Rs 290.5 crore. This windfall profit also improved Paytm's EBITDA by Rs 388 crore on a QoQ basis. The company's revenue also saw a slight uptick of 10.5% quarterly to Rs 1,659 crore, as opposed to Rs 1,501 crore in the previous quarter. But on a year-on-year basis, Paytm's revenue dipped significantly by 34%. The company also announced that it has entered into a DLG (<keyword id="23641220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Default-Loss-Guarantee" source="keywords">default loss guarantee</keyword>) model for its merchant loans of about Rs 225 crore with SMFG India Credit. Under this arrangement, Paytm will be first in line to take a hit in case of a loss that emerges from borrowers defaulting or skipping their payments. "Following the regulatory framework and the emerging market practice, we see increased willingness from lenders to partner and allocate more capital in the default loss. The DLG model will help to increase disbursements with the existing partners and expand partnerships with new lenders for the loan distribution,” said the company in its earnings release today. The company's revenue from its payment business also inched up 9% on a quarterly basis, along with its revenue from <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, which also grew by 34% QoQ. At present, Paytm's total merchant subscriptions stand at 1.12 crore, with the company garnering 3 lakh new merchants during the quarter. During the previous quarter, Paytm's <keyword id="20253122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gross-merchandise-value" source="keywords">gross merchandise value</keyword> (GMV) also inched up by 5% on a sequential basis, which experts anticipate will continue in the coming quarters, just as India braces for the festive season. Per its release, Paytm aims to achieve <keyword id="23641219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA-profitability" source="keywords">EBITDA profitability</keyword> (before ESOPs) by the fourth quarter of this financial year. However, investors remained unimpressed with Paytm's performance, with its share slipping by around 3.96% during the day to trade at Rs 697.20. The stock has a YTD (yield-to-date) of 7.91% during the year.

The domestic <keyword id="22405489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WPI-inflation-data" source="keywords">WPI inflation data</keyword> for June — scheduled to be announced on Monday — will also influence trading sentiments, traders said. Markets will remain closed on Wednesday for Muharram. Among major quarterly earnings to be tracked this week are from HDFC Life Insurance Company, Bajaj Auto, BPCL, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, Infosys, and Reliance Industries. "Q1 earnings will be a key focus this week as numerous companies, including heavyweights Infosys, and Reliance, are set to release their results. Additionally, <keyword id="22194639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pre-Budget-discussions" source="keywords">pre-Budget discussions</keyword> are expected to contribute to market volatility," Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd, said. On the global front, a significant focus will be on China. The country is scheduled to announce its GDP and Industrial Production (IIP) numbers, Meena said. "Other global factors to watch include the speech by the US Federal Reserve Chairman, US retail sales figures, and macroeconomic data from Japan," he added. Meanwhile, IT services company HCL Tech on Friday posted a 20.4 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,257 crore for the June-ended quarter and gave a revenue growth guidance of 3-5 per cent for FY25 on GenAI diversification and strong operational execution. "On Monday, markets will react to India's inflation data. Key results this week include Jio Financial Services, HDFC Life, Asian Paints, LTIMindtree, Infosys, Wipro, JSW Steel, Paytm, etc. Also globally, investors will take cues from China's GDP numbers, US core retail sales data, and ECB (European Central Bank) interest rate decision," Siddhartha Khemka, Head, Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said. Retail inflation increased to four-month high of 5.08 per cent in June as food items, including vegetables, became dearer, according to government data released on Friday. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said, "We expect stock-specific moves to gain traction due to the ongoing earnings season; indeed, IT will be in the limelight due to the good start to the earnings and outlook." In the week ahead, economic data like China GDP, EuroZone CPI inflation, ECB policy, and the US Fed chair speech will be watched by investors to get cues on market momentum, Nair added. On a weekly basis, the BSE benchmark jumped 522.74 points, or 0.65 per cent, while the Nifty climbed 178.3 points, or 0.73 per cent. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 622 points, or 0.78 per cent, to settle at a record closing level of 80,519.34 on Friday. During the day, it zoomed 996.17 points, or 1.24 per cent, to hit an all-time high of 80,893.51. The NSE Nifty surged 186.20 points, or 0.77 per cent, to settle at a record closing high of 24,502.15. Intra-day, it jumped 276.25 points, or 1.13 per cent, to hit a new lifetime peak of 24,592.20.

Trading activity to hinge on Q1 results, global trends in holiday-shortened week: analysts

The company attributed the growth to GMV growth, device additions, and growth in the financial services distribution business. Since its IPO, when the company went public, it for the first full year EBITDA before ESOP profitability of Rs 559 crore, its earnings results released Wednesday showed. In the January-March quarter, however, Paytm reported a revenue of Rs 2,267 crore, a modest decline of 3 per cent year-on-year. "In Q4 FY 2024, we had lower marketing spends, as we paused most of the user growth spending in the month of February and March. We expect to reinvest in these areas in the coming financial year," Paytm informed stock exchanges. "While we experienced a financial impact in Q4 due to the above disruptions, the full financial impact will be seen in Q1 FY 2025." Paytm says it is confident of seeing meaningful improvement starting from Q2 2024-25, based on restarting certain paused products and achieving steady growth in operating metrics. In Q1 of the current fiscal, its focus will be on acquiring new merchants, reactivation of inactive merchants, and redeployment of devices from inactive merchants to new merchants. "While there will be a smaller net addition of device merchants in Q1 FY 2025, we expect net additions to improve from thereon and recover to past trendlines by Q3 FY 2025." Its revenue from payment services were up 26 per cent to Rs 6,235 crore; net payment margin was up 50 per cent to Rs 2,955 crore; gross merchandise value (GMV) up 39 per cent to Rs 18.3 lakh crore. Merchant paying subscriptions for devices have reached 1.07 crore as of March 2024, an increase of 39 lakh. Revenue from financial services and others up 30 per cent to Rs 2,004 crore; value of loans distributed was up 48 per cent to Rs 52,390 crore. Further, Paytm said that the active rate and per device subscription revenue has been impacted. Merchant subscription revenue in Q4 was Rs 90 per device per month and it expects it to bottom out at Rs 80 in Q1, post which it should increase towards Rs 100 by Q4 of the current fiscal. "We continue to address our merchants' needs through innovative product launches and are backed by a large distribution and service network. We recently launched two more "Made in India" soundboxes which are customized to the needs of our merchants, with louder speakers and longer battery life." Paytm registers 25% growth in revenue at ₹9,978 crore in 2023-24

Digital payments and services app <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="keywords">Paytm</keyword> is working and will continue to work as usual even after February 29, its CEO <keyword id="20004114" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="keywords">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> said on Friday. The founder and CEO of One97 Communications Ltd (OCL), which owns Paytm brand, on social media platform X said the company is committed to serving the nation in full compliance. "To every Paytmer, Your favourite app is working, will keep working beyond 29 February as usual," Sharma said. RBI has barred Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) from accepting deposits or top-ups in any customer account, prepaid instruments, wallets, and FASTags, among others after February 29, 2024. OCL holds a 49% stake in PPBL but classifies it as an associate of the company and not as a subsidiary. "I with every Paytm team member salute you for your relentless support. For every challenge, there is a solution and we are sincerely committed to serve our nation in full compliance. India will keep winning global accolades in payment innovation and inclusion in financial services - with PaytmKaro as the biggest champion of it," Sharma said. The Paytm top management during an earning call on Thursday said they are working on a migration plan for PPBL, wallet, FASTag etc users with other banks. The company sees the RBI order to have an impact of Rs 300-500 crore on its annual operational profit as its customers will not be able to add money to their wallets, FASTag etc. Separately, the company informed that its offline merchants network offering and device business like Paytm Soundbox, EDC, QR are not impacted by the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) direction to its associate bank. The fintech company will also continue onboarding merchants to its platform. "The Paytm Payment Gateway business (online merchants) will continue to offer payment solutions to its existing merchants. Other financial services such as loan distribution, insurance distribution and equity broking, are also not in any way related to Paytm's associate bank and are expected to be unaffected by this direction," the company said. Paytm said that the RBI order also does not impact user deposits in their savings accounts, wallets, FASTags and NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) accounts, and they can continue to use the existing balances. RBI has ordered PPBL to settle all pipeline transactions and nodal accounts (in respect of all transactions initiated on or before February 29, 2024) by March 15, 2024 and no further transactions would be permitted thereafter. Sharma during the call had said that RBI order is a "big speed bump" and shared that he could not understand the trigger for the move and he was not aware of the exact nuance that triggered the order. "On behalf of Paytm I can say it is more of a big speed bump but it is something that we believe that with partnership of other banks and capabilities that we have already developed, we will be able to see through in the next few days or quarters as the case will be," he had said.

Fintech companies like Paytm and PB Fintech have not only reported better than expected earnings but also narrowed their losses significantly. Zomato and Nykaa did not deliver overall improvement in financials, but analysts remain optimistic. Another new age company among talks is hyperlocal delivery startup Dunzo with elevated losses and massive valuation. Billionaire and chairperson of RPG Group highlighted the financials of the company <a href="https://twitter.com/hvgoenka/status/1625843597626183680">in a tweet </a>on February 15. “New age digital stocks are not doing great primarily because the market is not doing great. India is underperforming this year with a negative 2.34 % return YTD while markets like China, HongKong and South Korea are doing very well. When India’s underperformance changes, new age digital companies also will start performing. Some results from this segment are very good like Paytm. Zomato also has done reasonably well, but Nykaa’s results came below expectations,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. New age technology companies have been under the scanner because of the massive underperformance in their share prices due to elevated valuation. The growth was driven by pick up in merchant subscription revenues and loan distribution. “Biggest surprise is distribution business, control of cashbacks, opex,” said Macquarie in a report. Shares of the company rose nearly 22% from February 3 when it reported its quarterly earnings. Macquarie has upgraded rating on the company’s stock to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Underperform’ with a target price of ₹800. “PayTM has positively surprised on the distribution of financial services revenue by a wide margin and has also managed to control overall expenses and charges. At the time of listing, profit and free cash flow were not even a part of management’s discussion. However, we see a very visible change in approach of management to deliver profit, evidenced, we believe, by the core EBIDTA profitability that was reported recently,” said Macquarie in a report. Zomato: A promising road to profitability Zomato reported better than expected Q3 FY23 revenues, and analysts believe it may reach profitability by the end of the current financial year. “Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. “Zomato’s road to profitability has grown even more promising. Zomato (ex-quick commerce) clocked adj. EBITDA level profitability in the month of Jan-23. Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” added the report. Analysts say Zomato’s relaunch of its Gold membership plan should bring growth back. For example, Zomato’s decision to cut operations in 225 smaller cities. The brokerage firm has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. “We continue to see increased strength of the dominant positioning in beauty and personal care (BPC) vertical while the newcomer, fashion vertical, has gained market share at the cost of a sharp dip in contribution margin,” added the report. Nykaa’s EBITDA margins came under pressure and fell to 5.3% in Q3, as against 6.3% in the same period last year. “While we expect Nykaa’s GMV growth, at 35% in FY23E-25E, to be the highest within our global ecommerce coverage, we believe Nykaa’s valuation premium (FY24 EV/GMV of 3.1x vs 0.5x median for peers) already reflects this solid growth outlook and Nykaa’s stronger margin profile,” said a report by Goldman Sachs. The investment banker has assigned a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. PB Fintech on course to profitability soon The December quarter performance of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar, was another surprise for investors as the company narrowed its losses significantly. Its insurance premiums jumped 70.3% on year to ₹30.3 billion driven by a strong showing across segments. “Given its market share of 90%-plus in online insurance sales and a growing offline presence, PB is poised to post strong sales,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. Further, the management expects revenue and margins to improve further as agent productivity rises and benefits of appointments channel are realised. They hinted at a sharp profitability uptick in Q4, say analysts. “This growth becomes even more impressive considering the seasonally weak Q3 for insurance, where new business premiums for life and general insurance declined QoQ by 19% and 12%, respectively,” said a report by JM Financial. "Crypto currencies cannot be called currencies as they don't have any underlying value," P <keyword id="19944928" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasudevan" source="keywords">Vasudevan</keyword>, an executive director at the RBI, said during a panel discussion organised by IIM-Kozhikode here. Ultimately it is a call that the government has to take on how to tackle crypto currencies, the official said. Currently, bitcoins have no legal backing in India and investors have to pay a tax on the income earned by trading in them. But definitely, credit is adding the flare of extra revenue and it will add to the net bps margin continuously,” said Sharma. Moreover, Sharma envisions a future where credit may become a choice of payment for many. “India is at the cusp of the next payments revolution where credit will become the mainstream payment choice. But the worst hit will be non-bank players as they will be hit on both asset and the liability sides. While they will have to pay higher rates while borrowing from banks and bond markets, they will also have to pass on higher costs to borrowers. This will slow down the rapid growth in their balance sheet, which has been driven by rapid growth in the disbursement of unsecured personal/consumer loans. According to analysts, non banking finance companies like Paytm and Bajaj Finance would be most affected by RBI’s move to tighten capital norms on unsecured loans and also loans disbursed to non banks. This will not only make lending more expensive for non banks but in many cases will also force them to raise more capital ahead of schedule. <keyword id="116253" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sbi-cards" source="Orion">SBI Cards</keyword>, Bajaj Finance, IIFL and Aditya Birla have relatively higher proportion of unsecured loans on their portfolio and, therefore, tighter capital norms will impact them the most. Unsecured personal loans account for 37% of Bajaj Finance’s loan book, while it is 21% for Aditya Birla Capital and it is 27% for IIFL (standalone), according to Jefferies. According to Jefferies, SBI Cards can see an estimated.400 basis points cut in its Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio while Bajaj Finance can see 220 basis point hair cut to Tier 1 CAR. However, both NBFCs are well capitalised and have higher return on equity (low capital consumption). “IIFL (standalone entity) and Aditya Birla Capital can see a 50-80 bps haircut to Tier 1 capital, which can lower their Tier 1 to 13%/15%. IIFL may need to infuse capital in the standalone entity; at ABFL, next phase of capital raise may get advanced,” the global investment bank said in a report. in funding costs. SBI Cards faces highest drag on Tier I CAR and highest dependence on bank-funding. The tighter norms will not impact NBFCs but even fintechs like Paytm. Loan disbursals by fintechs will also slow down from the current levels as they may find it hard to raise funds and even pass on higher cost loans to consumers. Japanese investment bank Nomura says in a report, that in the past 18 months, nearly 25%-30% of incremental growth for NBFCs has come from unsecured retail. Any moderation in unsecured credit for NBFCs will hence have an impact on both growth and profitability for NBFCs in our view. Moreover, the regulatory action comes at a time when credit costs in these segments have started to inch up. For Paytm's lending partners, higher funding costs and increased capital requirements will affect product profitability in the buy-now-pay-later and personal loans segments. Non bank lenders like private banks may also start to improve their underwriting standards after this which will impact overall growth. Jefferies says: “We also watch out for the pricing environment and ability of Paytm to pass-through hike in funding costs. In our base case earnings, we forecast consumer loan disbursal growth to normalise from 90% in FY24 to 40% in FY25 and 35% in FY26. Any additional 10 percentage point slower disbursal growth (vs. base case) in FY25/26E can lead to 5-10% impact on lending revenues and ~2-3% impact on overall contributions, which may impact break-even timelines as well. Paytm's growth potential: The tech innovator's journey of disruption and success

India's leading digital ecosystem for consumers and merchants, <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> announced its second quarter earnings report. The digital payments and financial services platform saw its revenue from operations grow by 64 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 10.9 billion in Q2 FY 2022, driven by 52 per cent growth in non-UPI payment volumes (GMV) and more than 3 times growth in financial services and other revenue. The company's contribution profit grew to Rs 2.6 billion in Q2 FY 2022, year-on-year increase of 592 per cent. The contribution margin jumped to 24.0 per cent of revenue from 5.7 per cent the previous year. Paytm posted an improved Adjusted EBITDA margin to (39 per cent) of revenues in Q2 FY 2022 (Rs 4,255 million), from (64 per cent) of revenues Q2 FY 2021 (Rs 4,267 million), along with increased investments in technology and merchant base expansion. "The growth of non-UPI GMV has driven continued payments revenue growth, and our UPI-led payment volume growth is translating to a significant ramp up of our financial services offering. We are driving digital payments and financial services penetration and widespread adoption across India. Paytm has seen a strong second quarter of FY22, which is a testimony to the strong two-sided ecosystem of consumers and merchants that we have built. We have maintained the growth momentum in our payments services business, expanded our financial services business aggressively and are on our way to pre-Covid volumes for Commerce and Cloud services," said the company's management on the second quarter earnings. Paytm's Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) growth was driven by active user engagement &amp; adoption across businesses. The company's GMV for Q2FY2022 was Rs 1,956 billion, up by 107 per cent Y-o-Y and the growth momentum continued in October 2021, where the GMV at Rs 832 billion was up 131 per cent Y-o-Y. The company's average Monthly Transacting Users (MTU) in Q2FY2022 is up by 33 per cent Y-o-Y to 57.4 million and the trajectory has continued in October 2021 with 63 million MTUs, growth of 35 per ent Y-o-Y compared to 47 million MTUs in October 2020. The Monthly GMV per Transacting User for Q2 FY 2022 grew 55 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 11,369. Paytm, which has been focussed on growing its financial services platform, saw its revenue from payments and financial services grew 69 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 8,426 million while Commerce and Cloud Services revenue grew by 47 per cent Y-o-Y to 2,438 million. The company's lending sector saw a huge boost as the number of loans disbursed grew 714 per cent year-on-year to over 2.8 million in Q2 FY 2022. The lending business continued to show strong growth as a result of the rapid scale-up of all of the company's lending products, including Postpaid (Buy-Now-Pay-Later), consumer loans and merchant loans. The company's financial institution partners disbursed around 1.3 million loans in October 2021, a 472 per cent increase in numbers of loans disbursed Y-o-Y and aggregating to a total disbursal of Rs 6,270 million implying a 418 per cent increase in value of loans disbursed Y-o-Y. Paytm's merchant base grew to 23 million in Q2 FY 2022, up from 18.5 million in Q2 FY 2021. The devices deployed base grew to 1.3 million in Q2 FY 2022 from 0.3 million as of Q2 FY 2021. We continue to witness strong adoption of our devices amongst merchant partners as our deployed base further increased to approximately 1.4 million as of October 2021, the company said.
