New Delhi, The government on Monday informed Parliament that <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> has suspended or removed over 2,500 fraudulent <keyword id="6095737" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan-apps" source="Orion">loan apps</keyword> from its Play Store between April 2021 and July 2022. The government is constantly engaged with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other regulators and stakeholders concerned to control fraudulent loan apps, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The matter is also regularly discussed and monitored in the meetings of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC), an inter-regulatory forum under the chairpersonship of the Finance Minister. The objective is to remain proactive, maintain cyber security preparedness with constant vigilance, and take appropriate and timely action to mitigate any such vulnerabilities in the Indian financial system, she said. As part of steps taken to control fraudulent loan apps, she said, the RBI has shared a 'whitelist' of legal apps with the government of India, and this list was shared by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) with Google, whose app store is the primary source of distribution of digital lending apps. Google has updated its policy regarding enforcement of loan lending apps on the Play Store and has also deployed additional policy requirements with strict enforcement actions for lending apps in India, she added. As per their revised policy, only those apps are allowed on the Play Store which are published by Regulated Entities (REs) or those working in partnership with REs. "Between April 2021 and July 2022, Google also reviewed approximately 3,500 to 4,000 loan lending apps and suspended or removed over 2,500 fraudulent loan apps from its Play Store," she said. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has been regularly analysing the digital lending apps proactively. Based on its analysis and complaints reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the I4C team analyses apps on various parameters and reports to Meity apps found suspicious for blocking, she said. To spread awareness against cybercrimes and to safeguard interests of citizens, several steps have been taken by the government, the RBI, and banks, she said. The RBI has formulated conducting of electronic-Banking Awareness And Training (e-BAAT) which has largely focussed on awareness about fraud and risk mitigation, while a Nation-wide Intensive Awareness Programme (NIAP) was carried out in collaboration with the REs. In a separate response, Sitharaman said more than 44.46 crore loans amounting to Rs 26.12 lakh crore (as of November 24, 2023) have been sanctioned to the borrowers under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) since its inception. Under PMMY, collateral-free institutional credit up to Rs 10 lakh is provided by Member Lending Institutions (MLIs), i.e., Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs), Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), and Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs). Any individual who is otherwise eligible to take a loan and has a business plan for a small business enterprise can avail of a loan under the scheme. Loans can be availed for income-generating activities in the manufacturing, trading, and services sectors, and also for activities allied to agriculture, under three categories, -- Shishu (loans up to Rs 50,000), Kishor (loans above Rs 50,000 and up to Rs 5 lakh) and Tarun (loans above Rs 5 lakh and up to Rs 10 lakh).

Google has removed 2,500 fraudulent loan apps from its Play Store, says FM

<keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword> on Friday said that after giving developers in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> more than three years to prepare, including three weeks after the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword>'s order, it is taking necessary "ensure our policies are applied consistently across the ecosystem, as we do for any form of policy violation globally". The company said in a blog post that enforcement of its policy, when necessary, can include removal of non-compliant apps from Google <keyword id="20163860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="play" source="keywords">Play</keyword>. Developers are welcome to resubmit their apps to be listed on Play by electing any of the three billing options as part of the company's payments policy. One of the options is to operate on a consumption-only basis without paying a service fee, even if it is part of a paid service. "With this option, any developer could allow a user of their app to access content that they paid for outside the app," said Google. The second option is to integrate Google Play's billing system to transact with millions of customers around the world and give their users safe ways to pay and the ability to manage their payments from a central location. The third option is to offer an alternative billing system alongside Google Play's for users in India. "When users opt for alternative billing systems, the fee is further reduced by an additional four per cent. App developers expanding in international markets can also enroll as part of our user choice billing pilot currently available in 35 markets," Google explained. In the meantime, "these developers continue to have other options to operate their business on Android, including distribution through alternative Android app stores or directly via their websites." "Existing users will be able to continue to access the apps without interruption - and we continue to offer our support to help developers get into compliance," said the company. The Android and Play ecosystem have collectively supported over 2.5 million jobs in India, said the company. In India, less than 60 developers on Google Play are subject to fees above 15 per cent, it added. The company said it has over 200,000 Indian developers using Google Play who adhere to the policies. The Supreme Court last month issued notice on a petition to Google India filed by tech startups, challenging Google Play Store's billing policy as "exploitative". Google begins to enforce Play Store policies in India, to remove non-compliant apps

Now, according to a Reuters report, Google has filed a request with a California federal judge to delay a court order that mandates the company to open up its Play Store to increased competition. In a court filing submitted on Friday, the tech giant argued that the injunction, set to take effect on November 1, poses “serious safety, security, and privacy risks” to the Android ecosystem. Google urged U.S. District Judge James Donato to pause the ruling while it appeals the decision. <h2>About the case </h2> The injunction stems from a case filed by Epic Games, the maker of “Fortnite.” In October 2023, a jury ruled that Google had been illegally monopolising the way consumers download apps and make in-app purchases on Android devices. Judge Donato’s ruling, issued on October 7, forces Google to allow third-party app stores and payment methods on its platform. Additionally, the order bars Google from paying device manufacturers to preinstall its Play Store and from sharing revenue generated through it with other app distributors. The remedies aim to give Android users more options for downloading apps and paying for transactions within them.The judge ruled that for three years, Google will not be able to pay companies to launch apps exclusively on the Play Store or pay them to preinstall the company's app store on devices.The judge also ruled that Google must allow competition app stores to access Google Play apps and that it cannot require app makers to use Google Play Billing.The remedies are set to take force from November. Shares of Google's parent company, Alphabet, fell 2.4% following the ruling.In a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/public-policy/epic-games-verdict-appeal/">statement posted online,</a> Google said it was appealing the decision."The Epic verdict missed the obvious: Apple and Android clearly compete. Google must allow third-party app stores on Android, Epic Games judge rules

New Delhi, Industry body IAMAI on Friday "advised" <keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword> not to delist any apps from Google <keyword id="20163860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="play" source="keywords">Play</keyword>, after the tech titan sent out a clear warning that it will remove apps not complying with Play store billing policies. Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) confirmed that at least four of its members have received notices from Google. In a statement, IAMAI advised Google not to delist any apps from Google Play. "The affected members of IAMAI are of the view that a substantive hearing of the case is pending before the <keyword id="19900742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court-of-india" source="keywords">Supreme Court of India</keyword>, and Google should not take any coercive action during the pendency of the case," IAMAI said. Google on Friday said a clutch of companies, including well-established ones, continue to flout its billing norms, choosing not to pay Play store service fee applicable on sale of in-app digital goods, and warned that it will not hesitate to take necessary action to enforce policies, including removal of such non-compliant apps from Google Play. Amid a warcry over Google Play billing policy by some prominent Indian startups and the recent launch of <keyword id="20522402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indus-appstore" source="keywords">Indus Appstore</keyword>, the Made-in-India app market challenger, Google in a blogpost asserted that allowing a small group of developers to get differential treatment from the vast majority of developers who are paying their fair share creates an uneven playing field putting all other apps and games at a competitive disadvantage. It went on to say that enforcement of the policy, when necessary, can include removal of non-compliant apps from Google Play. Google, however, added that existing users will be able to continue to access the apps without interruption and that it continues "to offer our support to help developers get into compliance". Developers, Google said, are welcome to resubmit their apps to be listed on Play by opting for one of the three billing options as part of its payment policy. "Today, we have over 2,00,000 Indian developers using Google Play who adhere to our policies, helping us ensure we have a safe platform; however, for an extended period of time, 10 companies, including many well-established ones, have chosen to not pay for the immense value they receive on Google Play by securing interim protections from the court," Google had said.

Apple just pulled this piracy app from the App Store

New Delhi: Online food delivery platform <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Zomato" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> will acquire <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Paytm">Paytm</keyword>'s entertainment <keyword id="20028334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticketing" source="keywords">ticketing</keyword> business for Rs 2,048 crore to strengthen its "going-out" segment in a deal that will help the troubled fintech firm to sharpen its focus on core payments and financial services distribution. Paytm's entertainment ticketing business covers movies, sports, and events (live performances). The boards of Zomato and One 97 Communications Ltd (OCL) have approved the all-cash deal. As part of this agreement, OCL's entertainment ticketing business will transfer business to its 100 per cent subsidiaries Orbgen Technologies Pvt Ltd (OTPL) and Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd (WEPL), followed by the sale of 100 per cent stake in these subsidiaries (which operate the TicketNew and Insider platforms) to Zomato. Subsequently, Zomato will spin off the new business into a new app called 'District'. Under the deal, Zomato will fully acquire Orbgen Technologies Pvt Ltd (OTPL), which is into movie ticketing, for Rs 1,264.6 crore and buy Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which is into events ticketing for Rs 783.8 crore. The combined entertainment ticketing business has a scale of Rs 297 crore in revenue and Rs 29 crore in adjusted EBITDA in FY24. "The transfer will also include around 280 existing employees from the entertainment ticketing business," OCL said in a statement, adding that the transaction generates significant profits for Paytm and cash proceeds will further strengthen the balance sheet. Announcing the deal, Paytm said it allows the fintech to strengthen its focus on core payments and financial services distribution. Paytm said with its strong focus on long-term value creation, the company remains confident in substituting revenue from its entertainment ticketing business by expanding core business areas of payments and financial service distribution. "This move allows us to continue focusing on long-term growth in our core areas and value creation for all stakeholders," a Paytm spokesperson said. On the other hand, Zomato Managing Director and CEO <keyword id="19901325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepinder-goyal" source="keywords">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> in a letter to shareholders said, "The proposed acquisition helps us add more scale and offer newer use-cases (like movie and sports ticketing) to our customers in this segment". Zomato believes the deal makes it more relevant to its customers and gives an opportunity to spin off the business into a new app. "We are going to call it District, which could be a game changer for each of these use cases given the need for a single brand as a destination in this segment," Goyal added. Zomato is keen to position 'District' as the brand that consumers turn to when they are thinking of going out, he added. OTPL was incorporated on November 23, 2007, in India. It is in the business of listing and sale of movie tickets and other services. It had a turnover of Rs 13.14 crore in the fiscal ended March 31, 2024. WEPL was incorporated on December 21, 2015. It is in the business of listing and sale of event tickets and other services. Its turnover in the FY24 was Rs 236.03 crore. Paytm said the move to sell its entertainment ticketing business underscores its core focus on payments and financial services distribution. "In recent quarters, the company has also expanded its offerings in insurance, equity broking, and wealth distribution, with a significant opportunity to cross-sell these services and grow its market presence as a leading financial services distribution player," Paytm said. During a transition period (up to 12 months), the movie and event tickets will continue to be available on the Paytm app, as well as on the TicketNew and Insider platforms, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted experience for users and merchant partners. Paytm said the deal underscores its success in building businesses and creating value for shareholders. Zomato's Goyal said the District app is expected to be launched anytime in the next few weeks. Post this acquisition, he said Zomato's going-out business would be spread across multiple different platforms. Its existing going-out business (dining-out + event ticketing) would continue to run on the Zomato app, and the acquired business -- movie, sports and event ticketing -- would continue to run on Paytm's main app for a transition period of up to 12 months, along with Insider and TicketNew apps. Both of these would get transferred to Zomato as part of the transaction. District app will duplicate the offerings above and over time, we will gradually nudge our customers to move from the Zomato, Paytm, Insider, and TicketNew apps to the District app. "Once most customers start transacting on the District app, we will remove the duplication and shut down this business on all the other apps. Eventually, there will just be a button to launch the District app on the Zomato app (like it is for Blinkit today) so that we continue to tap into the large customer base of Zomato," he added.

CEO Tim Cook <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ceo-tim-cook-china-development-forum-xi-jinping-meeting-2024-3">visited the country last month</a> to open a new store in Shanghai and rub elbows with top policymakers. That visit came after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-sales-china-down-huawei-vivo-smartphone-2024-3">iPhone sales dropped</a> earlier this year. And in January, Chinese chipmakers drew up plans to create <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-to-face-huge-threat-to-iphone-in-china-2024-2">chip production lines</a> to supply processors to local smartphone makers. The move stands to hurt Apple, which has so far benefited from tight export restrictions. China's direction to Apple comes as US policymakers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-ban-bill-explained-politics-tech-platform-2024-3">debate a ban</a> on TikTok, the popular Chinese app. Some lawmakers are concerned about data harvesting and political influence. The bill would prevent Apple and Google from distributing TikTok's app in their app stores and ban US websites from hosting TikTok.

<keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> removed 1,474 apps from its <keyword id="115504" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="app-store" source="Orion">App Store</keyword> as per requests from various governments to take down such apps in 2022, including a massive 1,435 from mainland China and just 14 from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. According to the company's '2022 App Store Transparency Report', the Pakistan government requested to take down 10 apps while Russia asked to remove seven apps for violating various laws of the land. There were a total 18,412 appeals of app removals from various agencies worldwide (again led by China at 5,484), including 709 from India. Apple restored 24 apps in India after appeals of app removals last year. As of 2022, Apple had 1,783,232 apps in total on the App Store, according to the report. The tech giant reviewed 6,101,913 app submissions and rejected 1,679,694 last year for violating App Store policies. App submissions approved after rejection were 253,466 and total apps finally removed from the App Store were 186,195 in 2022. It was the first report published as part of the company's $100 million settlement with App Store developers in 2021. Category-wise, games (38,883), utilities (20,045) and business (16,997) topped the list of removed apps. Total number of registered Apple developers on the App Store was 36,974,015 while Apple terminated 428,487 developer accounts for violating its policies in 2022. Earlier this week, Apple announced that its App Store prevented over $2.09 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions in 2022, blocking nearly 3.9 million stolen credit cards from being used to make purchases, and banned 7,14,000 accounts from transacting again. The law requires app store developers to allow app downloads and purchases from third-party vendors.In a previous post, Epic said in the blog post that Apple had removed its "Epic Games Sweden AB" account, which it planned to use to put the Epic Games Store on IOS."This is a serious violation of the DMA and shows Apple has no intention of allowing true competition on iOS devices," the company said.Apple told CNN that it reinstated the account after talking with Epic and having Epic agree to new EU-focused policies.An Epic lawsuit against Google went to trial in November 2023 in San Francisco federal court over the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fortnite-maker-epic-games-battles-google-over-app-store-fees-2023-11">digital payment processing system in the Google Play store</a>.A jury <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epic-games-google-fortnite-ruling-play-store-apple-lawsuit-trial-2023-12">sided with Epic</a> and agreed that Google maintained an illegal monopoly with the Google Play store.
