The company's PAT (profit after tax) stood at Rs 930 crore. Notably, without this windfall gain, Paytm's finances would still be in red, with the company racking up losses worth Rs 415 crore. Paytm was in red in the year-ago period as well, incurring losses worth Rs 290.5 crore. This windfall profit also improved Paytm's EBITDA by Rs 388 crore on a QoQ basis. The company's revenue also saw a slight uptick of 10.5% quarterly to Rs 1,659 crore, as opposed to Rs 1,501 crore in the previous quarter. But on a year-on-year basis, Paytm's revenue dipped significantly by 34%. The company also announced that it has entered into a DLG (<keyword id="23641220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Default-Loss-Guarantee" source="keywords">default loss guarantee</keyword>) model for its merchant loans of about Rs 225 crore with SMFG India Credit. Under this arrangement, Paytm will be first in line to take a hit in case of a loss that emerges from borrowers defaulting or skipping their payments. "Following the regulatory framework and the emerging market practice, we see increased willingness from lenders to partner and allocate more capital in the default loss. The DLG model will help to increase disbursements with the existing partners and expand partnerships with new lenders for the loan distribution,” said the company in its earnings release today. The company's revenue from its payment business also inched up 9% on a quarterly basis, along with its revenue from <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, which also grew by 34% QoQ. At present, Paytm's total merchant subscriptions stand at 1.12 crore, with the company garnering 3 lakh new merchants during the quarter. During the previous quarter, Paytm's <keyword id="20253122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gross-merchandise-value" source="keywords">gross merchandise value</keyword> (GMV) also inched up by 5% on a sequential basis, which experts anticipate will continue in the coming quarters, just as India braces for the festive season. Per its release, Paytm aims to achieve <keyword id="23641219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA-profitability" source="keywords">EBITDA profitability</keyword> (before ESOPs) by the fourth quarter of this financial year. Within beauty, makeup was the most sought-after category with a lot of interest in looking and feeling good,” according to the E-Commerce Festive Season ‘22 report by Redseer Strategy Consultants. The report was measuring festival sales between September 22- October 23. It found that the online gross merchandise value (GMV) grew 25% y-o-y during the festive month amounting to ₹76,000 crore . And, Tier 2+ contributed to more than half of this GMV, at around 57%. “Democratisation of categories continued this year as well, with lower-order-value items growing faster than mobiles and electronics. While mobiles and electronics continue to dominate category share, home and kitchen, groceries and beauty personal care were the fastest growing categories. Grocery grew almost two times from the last festive season,” said <keyword id="210394" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sanjay-kothari" source="Orion">Sanjay Kothari</keyword>, associate partner, Redseer Strategy Consultants. Gifting and product upgradation big purchase drivers As per the RedSeer report, sales went up both online and offline during the festival month. “Simultaneous growth of online and offline revalidates the domestic consumption story and indicates ample growth opportunities for both formats,” revealed Redseer. RedSeer also said that there was growing maturity in the online <keyword id="6354851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail" source="Orion">retail</keyword> ecosystem. “Three in four sellers we surveyed reported at least 2X volume growth from BAU (business as usual) during sale days, with strong support from platforms in planning and executing the festive season well. This increase was more visible in lower ASP (average selling price) categories like fashion where 42% of the sellers reported a 3X to 5X growth from BAU,” said Kothari. It also disbursed over 1 lakh loans per day during the period, the company said in an exchange filing. The Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led company has reported that its pace of loan disbursals has increased from the previous quarter. At this rate, it would end up issuing loans worth ₹34,000 crore by the end of FY23, up from the ₹24,000 crore as estimated in the previous quarter. Another new age company among talks is hyperlocal delivery startup Dunzo with elevated losses and massive valuation. Billionaire and chairperson of RPG Group highlighted the financials of the company <a href="https://twitter.com/hvgoenka/status/1625843597626183680">in a tweet </a>on February 15. “New age digital stocks are not doing great primarily because the market is not doing great. India is underperforming this year with a negative 2.34 % return YTD while markets like China, HongKong and South Korea are doing very well. When India’s underperformance changes, new age digital companies also will start performing. Some results from this segment are very good like Paytm. Zomato also has done reasonably well, but Nykaa’s results came below expectations,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. New age technology companies have been under the scanner because of the massive underperformance in their share prices due to elevated valuation. The growth was driven by pick up in merchant subscription revenues and loan distribution. “Biggest surprise is distribution business, control of cashbacks, opex,” said Macquarie in a report. Shares of the company rose nearly 22% from February 3 when it reported its quarterly earnings. Macquarie has upgraded rating on the company’s stock to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Underperform’ with a target price of ₹800. “PayTM has positively surprised on the distribution of financial services revenue by a wide margin and has also managed to control overall expenses and charges. At the time of listing, profit and free cash flow were not even a part of management’s discussion. However, we see a very visible change in approach of management to deliver profit, evidenced, we believe, by the core EBIDTA profitability that was reported recently,” said Macquarie in a report. Zomato: A promising road to profitability Zomato reported better than expected Q3 FY23 revenues, and analysts believe it may reach profitability by the end of the current financial year. “Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. “Zomato’s road to profitability has grown even more promising. Zomato (ex-quick commerce) clocked adj. EBITDA level profitability in the month of Jan-23. Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” added the report. Analysts say Zomato’s relaunch of its Gold membership plan should bring growth back. Most brokerage houses have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/no-long-tail-effect-zomato-banks-on-demand-recovery-in-future-even-as-it-shuts-operations-in-225-cities-on-poor-performance/articleshow/97907071.cms">maintained a ‘Buy’ rating </a>on the company’s stock. “The fact that most of these companies have put forth their strategy to cut down losses and become profitable in the near future builds hope for investors. For example, Zomato’s decision to cut operations in 225 smaller cities. Moreover, since most of these <keyword id="10951575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-age-tech-companies" source="Orion">new age tech companies</keyword> are direct consumer based there are expectations of inflation cooling down and boosting consumer spend.” Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail) at Kotak Securities told Business Insider India. Nykaa: Premium valuation reflects solid outlook, say analysts Nykaa, reported a 70% on year decline in net profit in Q3 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/nykaas-stock-plunges-4-2-after-its-q3-net-profit-slips-70/articleshow/97901748.cms">missing analysts expectations</a>. Despite this, brokerages believe the best is yet to come for the company. During a post-earnings conference call Falguni Nayar, executive chairperson, MD and CEO of Nykaa said that although inflationary pressures were present, it wasn’t that big of an issue for many of Nykaa’s customers. Q3 is considered to be a seasonal quarter for the company because of the festive season and despite macro challenges Nykaa’s growth was applauded by analysts. “In a quarter rampaged by a tougher macroeconomic environment, Nykaa reported substantial growth in Q3FY23 numbers,” said a report by JM Financial. The brokerage firm has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. “We continue to see increased strength of the dominant positioning in beauty and personal care (BPC) vertical while the newcomer, fashion vertical, has gained market share at the cost of a sharp dip in contribution margin,” added the report. Nykaa’s EBITDA margins came under pressure and fell to 5.3% in Q3, as against 6.3% in the same period last year. “While we expect Nykaa’s GMV growth, at 35% in FY23E-25E, to be the highest within our global ecommerce coverage, we believe Nykaa’s valuation premium (FY24 EV/GMV of 3.1x vs 0.5x median for peers) already reflects this solid growth outlook and Nykaa’s stronger margin profile,” said a report by Goldman Sachs. The investment banker has assigned a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. PB Fintech on course to profitability soon The December quarter performance of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar, was another surprise for investors as the company narrowed its losses significantly. Its insurance premiums jumped 70.3% on year to ₹30.3 billion driven by a strong showing across segments. “Given its market share of 90%-plus in online insurance sales and a growing offline presence, PB is poised to post strong sales,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. Further, the management expects revenue and margins to improve further as agent productivity rises and benefits of appointments channel are realised. They hinted at a sharp profitability uptick in Q4, say analysts. “This growth becomes even more impressive considering the seasonally weak Q3 for insurance, where new business premiums for life and general insurance declined QoQ by 19% and 12%, respectively,” said a report by JM Financial. New age technology companies back in the spotlight after Q3 performance

India's leading <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">digital</keyword> payments and financial services company <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> will be a key beneficiary of India's Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword>) incentive scheme, brokerage firm Morgan Stanley said on Thursday. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the incentive scheme of Rs 26 billion for the promotion of RuPay Debit Cards and low-value BHIM-UPI transactions (P2M) for FY23, compared with Rs 15 billion in FY22. "Apart from banks, Paytm should be a key beneficiary of the above. On our estimates, Paytm would have received 5-7 per cent of the FY22 incentive, and assuming a similar share for FY23, this would represent 3-5 per cent of our contribution profit estimate (1 per cent higher than what we previously assumed for FY23)," the brokerage firm mentioned. One97 Communications's associate Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) is the top beneficiary and leading remitter bank for UPI transactions. PPBL is an issuer and PSP Bank in itself along with being an acquirer of UPI transactions. Under the scheme, acquiring banks are provided with a financial incentives for promoting point-of-sale and e-commerce transactions using RuPay debit cards and BHIM-UPI transactions. <keyword id="198636" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="Orion">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword>, Founder, CEO &amp; MD of Paytm, tweeted: "Huge commitment by GOI Cabinet to push Digital Payments thru UPI and RuPay. During its last earnings call, Paytm's top management had said that the UPI merchant payments (which are free for the merchant) have become revenue-generating given the government is encouraging digital payments in the form of incentives for UPI P2M transactions. "UPI helps us with efficient customer and merchant acquisition and allows us to better monetise our platform by upselling financial services as well as payments devices," it said. This incentive scheme will facilitate the building of a robust digital payment ecosystem and promote RuPay Debit Card and BHIM-UPI digital transactions. In line with the objective of '<keyword id="2664548" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sabka-saath" source="Orion">Sabka Saath</keyword>, Sabka Vikas', the scheme will also promote UPI Lite and UPI 123PAY as economical and user-friendly digital payments solutions and enable further deepening of digital payments in the country, across all sectors and segments of the population. The government also intends to continue the financial support for digital payments announced in the previous Budget, with a focus on promoting the use of payment platforms that are economical and user-friendly. The Paytm Super App continues to see growing consumer engagement with the average MTU for the quarter that ended December 2022 at 85 million, registering a growth of 32 per cent YoY. The total merchant GMV processed through the platform for the quarter ended December 2022 aggregated to Rs 3.46 lakh crore ($42 billion), marking a YoY growth of 38 per cent. Paytm will be key beneficiary of India's UPI incentive scheme: Morgan Stanley

Since the announcement of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=demonetisation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">demonetization</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=paytm&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Paytm</a> has been raking in money like never before. One of the biggest beneficiaries of demonetization has been <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> as people have moved to cashless payments owing to cash crunch. 
 
Within 12 days, Paytm has witnessed over 7 million transactions worth Rs 120 crore a day. 
 
The mobile wallet is now four months ahead of its target and crossed $5 billion <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gmv&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">GMV sales</a>. 
 
Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), which is an industry term for estimating the total worth of goods sold through a digital platform, for Paytm was $3 billion last year. 
 
"Paytm is registering over 7 million transactions worth Rs 120 crore in a day as millions of consumers and merchants across the country try mobile payments on the Paytm payment platform for the first time," said Sudhanshu Gupta, Vice President, Paytm. 
 
The company is currently doing more transactions than the combined average daily usage of credit and debit cards in India, he added. 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=digital+wallets&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mobile wallet</a> companies including Paytm have seen manifold growth in transactions and new users coming on board with people turning to digital platforms as serpentine queues outside ATMs continuing to hassle cash-strapped public. 
 
"Offline transactions now contribute to over 65 per cent of the overall business from 15 per cent about six months ago. We are also working on expanding our merchant network by 150,000 additional merchants," he said. 
 
Paytm has over 150 million mobile wallet users currently. 
 
Mobile payment transaction value in India is also likely to register over 150 per cent CAGR and cross Rs 2,000 trillion by FY 2021-22 from just over Rs 8 trillion as of FY 2015-16, the study titled Indian M-wallet market said.

Paytm is inching closer to Macquarie's target of ₹1200

Flipkart is all set to achieve another milestone as after aiming for a $15-billion valuation, the most valuable online marketplace is vying to reach its next landmark - $10 billion in total worth of goods sold. 
 
Flipkart is adding highmargin categories such as furniture, homes and travel booking and sharpening its strategy in response to rivals Amazon, Snapdeal and Paytm gaining bulk rapidly. 
 
Flipkart expects this to boost its annual Gross Merchandise Value, or GMV, to $10-12 billion (Rs 64,000-76,000 crore) in 9 months to a year. 
 
Economic Times reported that this was a slight bump-up from its present GMV forecast of $8 billion for the year to March 2016, and more than double the $4 billion it achieved in 2014-15, a pace eclipsing the growth of several top online and brick-and-mortar rivals. 
 
"This will be a big milestone for us," Mukesh Bansal, head of commerce at Flipkart, said in an interview to ET. Flipkart reached $1 billion in annual GMV in 2013-14. The Tiger Globalbacked firm was seeking to raise funds at a valuation of about $15 billion, up from $11 billion reached in December. 
 
The company is preparing to start selling homes, travel deals and groceries by the end of this year, three people aware of its plans told the financial daily, on the condition of anonymity. 
 
However, Bansal did not confirm the plans. 
 
"We want to be a one-stop shop for every need,” he said. 
 
Flipkart is confident of doubling its GMV run rate - annual projection based on current GMV - even if sales growth slowed in certain months, said Bansal, also the chief executive of the company's fashion subsidiary Myntra. 
GMV is a key e-Commerce industry metric, measures a firm's growth based on the maximum price of goods and services sold on its platform and not by actual revenue, which could be much lower. 
 
"We felt at the start of the year that 100% growth at this scale is quite substantial. This quarter we will be on track for almost 35% growth as compared to the previous quarter (January-March), which was slightly more than the October-December quarter at 4-5% because of the Big Billion Day (sale) in October," Bansal told ET. 
 
The growth of Indian online retail has been dependent on discounting, but companies are now looking to lower spending on discounts and promotions while staying competitive. 
 
"I sense a period now where even though e-tailers will not be focusing on profits; there will be more focus on margins as compared to GMV," Niren Shah, managing director at Norwest Venture Partners told ET. Norwest Venture Partners has backed online retailers including Fashionandyou and Pepperfry. 
 
Indian online retailers suffer 35% gross losses on each unit of GMV sold, according to a recent Goldman Sachs report. "With this discounting strategy, we note that these three e-tailers (Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon India) now account for nearly 80% market share in the e-tail space, led by Flipkart at 45%," it said.

Flipkart to add more items on its list, to boost GMV to Rs 76,000 crore

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, the e-commerce shopping website launched in 2010 and backed by the Alibaba group, had a happy Diwali in the festive season that went by. In the three-day pre-Diwali sale that Paytm held in the first week of November, it sold a good number of motorcycles and bicycles, even as mobile phones and fashion apparels topped the charts. This resulted in a figure of Rs 300 crore, highlighting the company's success in implementing the online-to-offline model. 
 
Talking of the model, the purchases are made online while deliveries are done from dealerships. The company sold 500 Mahindra motorcycles and more than 1,000 bicycles in the new products category. For online sale of Mahindra Centuro motorcycles and Mahindra Gusto scooters, Paytm had an exclusive tie-up with Mahindra Two Wheelers. What helped in realizing these numbers was competitive prices on bikes and up to 25% cashback on bicycles. 
 
For mobile phones, which are nowadays seeing high online sale figures, sales increased 5-6 times as compared to the average daily orders, and fashion products also saw a similar rise in the numbers. The online-to-offline model, which was used in selling bikes and bicycles was also implemented for selling mobile phones. One-fifth of mobiles sold in the sale period were delivered by local stores and that too within two hours of the order. For this, Paytm had entered into a contract with The Mobile Store, which is country's largest phone retail chain. 
 
Maximum sales were recorded in the electronics category, which helped the site see a fivefold increase in the number of orders and gross merchandise value (GMV) during the sale in comparison to the daily averages. GMV is the measurement of the maximum price of goods and services sold on a company's platform and is higher than its actual revenue. 
 
The company had set a target of Rs 250-300 crore for this sale, and saw 6-8 lakh concurrent users. This is 10-15 times the peak traffic that the website usually gets. The next target for the company is of Rs 1,000-crore, which it has planned to achieve in the two-month period, ending December.

In March, Flipkart registered an average of five lakh shipments daily, whereas <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> reported nearly 4.5 lakh shipments every day. ET quoted sources saying Snapdeal saw its volumes dip significantly to 30,000 a day from a high of 1.5 lakh daily shipments in March 2016. Flipkart's strong gains come from major categories such as fashion and smartphone segment. It saw 57% rise in smartphone category in first quarter of 2017. While Amazon India had a 27% share, according to data from Counterpoint Research. In the whole of 2016, Amazon increased its share to 31% in this category while Flipkart slipped to 44%, the research firm said. "While higher GMV means more sales, higher orders mean more customers or more orders from the same customers, both are desirable for the sizeable growth of the industry," Krishna Choudhury, senior business analyst at RedSeer Consulting, told ET. "Flipkart continues to remain ahead of Amazon India in terms of gross sales," sources in the know how told ET. "We continue to see tremendous momentum despite our scale, growing at about 85% in Q1 this year. We cannot offer comment on any other financial details," a representative for Amazon India told the news daily. Meanwhile, the battle may heat up if talks of Snapdeal buyout to Flipkart become true. "Marketplaces will look to increase the commissions earned from merchants as well as from chargeable services to consumers, reducing operational costs (including manpower), and rationalising marketing expenditure whose efficacy isn't really being monitored," Devangshu Dutta, chief executive at consulting firm Third Eyesight who expects 2017 to be a year of consolidation, told ET.

ShopClues and Paytm are also set to flag off their festive season sale around the same time. 
 
Flipkart's Big Billion Days 2016 and Amazon Great Indian Sale will be the most anticipated, just like every year but there are some things that have changed. 
 
• Flipkart has introduced ‘Your wish, our offer’ where products that have been ‘wish listed the most number of times will have bigger offers on them. After the 2014 technical glitches, we hope the sale-ing is smooth for this e-commerce player. 
 
• Amazon’s Great Indian Sale is scheduled for October 1- 5 and Amazon have announced Curtain Raiser Deals, where customers can choose between two groups of products - the most voted will go on sale at 12am on October 1. 
 • Snapdeal’s <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> sale is based on it’s rebranded tagline 'Unbox Zindagi' and starts from October 2nd till October 6th. Discounts up to 70 percent are promised as part of the <keyword id="3703614" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapdeal-unbox-sale">Snapdeal Unbox Sale</keyword> to the consumers. 
 
• What will be interesting to see is the amount of discounts and cashback that are offered this year compared to last year, since as reports suggest that the GMV in e-commerce has seen a decline of 20-25% in the first six months of 2016. 
 • We have also seen a trend of loyalty services offerings amongst the biggest players in the form of Flipkart First, <keyword id="758541" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime">Amazon Prime</keyword> and Snapdeal Gold. This ensures that the customer is given better service in terms of delivery or discounts, enabling the buyer to be loyal towards one player for all their shopping needs. 
 
• This also means that they are likely to spend big due to hooks in the form of extended offers of warranty, extra discounts after more spending and next-day deliveries. 
 • So far, so good. Amazon Prime is a leader in this category as the model has been tried and tested in the US. The crème-de-la-crème of the online shopper might enjoy these subscription services, but most <keyword id="25903" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indians">Indians</keyword> still like their products delivered for free. It’ll be interesting to see how Amazon adapts Amazon Prime for the Indian market.

Shopclues which was once valued at $1.1 billion-- is sold in an all stock deal for a reported valuation ranging between $70-$100 million. Here’s a look at how it all went down for the e-commerce startup. 2011 Shopclues was founded in July 2011 by Sanjay Sethi, Sandeep Aggarwal and Radhika Aggarwal. This was two years before Amazon came to India. It raised an angel round of funding. 2012 The startup raised its series A round of funding of $4 million. During this time, Shopclues had 2500 transactions a day and according to <a href="https://www.techcircle.in/2012/09/04/excl-shopclues-raises-4m-in-series-a-round-looking-to-gross-rs-100cr-sales-by-dec-2012">reports</a>, was hoping to turn profitable by 2013. 2013 Gaining momentum, Shopclues closes its series B round for $10 million from investors Nexus Venture Partners and Helion Venture Partners. 2014 Shopclues raised $15 million as a part of its series C round of funding from its existing investors. 2015 In 2015, the startup scooped up its Series D funding for $100 million, also welcoming Tiger Global to its board of investors. “Shopclues has emerged as the leading marketplace of choice for the millions of small and local businesses seeking to reach mass consumers in India’s tier 2 and tier 3 cities,” the then Tiger Global private equity business head Lee Fixel <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/e-com-marketplace-shopclues-raises-100m-series-c-funding-led-tiger-global/">had said.</a> It also registered a GMV of $400 million. 2016 Between late 2015 and early 2016, Shopclues closed its series E round of funding to join the prestigious unicorn club. It also brought back its dreams for profitability while also reportedly hoping for an IPO. 2017 Shopclues was caught in the middle of a very public spat between its founders – husband and wife duo Sandeep Aggarwal and Radhika. Aggarwal put out a post on Facebook accusing his wife of “an illicit affair” as well as ousting him from the company. In FY17, the company’s revenue grew by 5% instead of the usual 50% jump it had been seeing. Snapdeal (who was itself making a comeback from massive losses) was reported to be in talks with Shopclues for a possible merger, but the talks didn’t go through in the end. There were also rumours about ebay.in looking to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/ebay-in-talks-with-etailers-including-shopclues-for-a-fresh-bid-in-india/articleshow/65157378.cms">acquire</a> Shopclues. Shopclues also laid off about 200 employees to cut costs. Then came the news of its final sale to Singapore-based Qoo10 in an all stock deal, but with a massive fall in valuation. “This partnership presents new strategic opportunities for both companies, as it opens up cross-border opportunities for consumers and sellers across Asia,” the company said in a statement.
