<ul class="summary-list"><li>As <keyword id="48403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="universities">universities</keyword> keep campuses closed and offer only <keyword id="977497" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="online-classes">online classes</keyword> for the fall semester, many students are deciding <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-colleges-higher-education-financial-struggles-pandemic-online-classes-2020-5">not to return</a>.</li><li>It's proving hard even for prestigious universities to convince students to pay upwards of $30,000 semester for remote classes, when online-only <keyword id="37181" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="colleges">colleges</keyword> offer similar courses for a fraction of the cost. </li><li>As US students and colleges alike grapple with the reality of virtual learning, COVID-19 may be leaving a lasting impact on how Americans view and value higher education.</li></ul><p>As colleges around the country decide to extend online learning into the fall semester as a safety measure against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-colleges-higher-education-financial-struggles-pandemic-online-classes-2020-5">more and more students</a> are deciding they don't want to fork over thousands in tuition to take classes on Zoom. Colleges are finding it harder than ever to convince them it's worth it.</p><p>Put plainly: The <keyword id="232730" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-model">business model</keyword> of the American university is not looking good.</p><p>Here's why.</p><h2>Students just don't want to pay so much for online classes</h2><p>Minh Phuc Tran, a student at the University of San Francisco, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-colleges-higher-education-financial-struggles-pandemic-online-classes-2020-5">told Business Insider</a> that he is unlikely to continue classes at USF in the fall if they are strictly online. </p><p>"My experiences with classes the past couple of months have not been so great," he said, "For me, for <keyword id="6360288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="College">college</keyword>, you really have to be there and be present... the dynamics now just aren't the same." </p><p>University of San Francisco's estimated tuition for the 2020-21 academic school year is <a href="https://www.usfca.edu/admission/undergraduate/tuition-and-fees">$51,930</a>. But paying this price for online classes while losing out on all of college's social activities — from living in dorms to participating in schools sports, clubs, and other activities — doesn't seem fair to students used to on-campus life. </p><p>Despite universities' best efforts, many students are dissatisfied with the conversion to online learning. Given the lack of access to campus resources, libraries, labs, performance spaces, and creative studios, it's difficult for colleges to that require students pay the same price for virtual classes alone. </p><p>Grainger Rickenbaker, a freshman at Drexel University in Philadelphia who filed a class-action lawsuit against his school for tuition reimbursement, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unimpressed-by-online-classes-college-students-seek-refunds-2020-5">told the AP</a> that many of his classes have been replaced with pre-recorded videos.</p><p>Students at schools around the country, from <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/04/23/nyc-students-suing-colleges-for-refunds-after-coronavirus-shutdowns/">Columbia</a> to <a href="https://www.jconline.com/story/news/2020/04/10/coronavirus-indiana-purdue-student-sues-university-wants-tuition-housing-refund-after-being-told-lea/5133856002/">Purdue</a> to <a href="https://statenews.com/article/2020/04/msu-students-file-lawsuit-against-university-demanding-tuition-room-board-and-fee-refunds?ct=content_open&amp;cv=cbox_latesttest">Michigan State</a>, are filing suits demanding refunds.</p><h2>Universities will need to prove that their price tag is worth it — or adjust accordingly</h2><p>Some colleges were being severely affected by equivalent online options even before the pandemic. Concordia University in Oregon <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/education/2020/02/concordia-universitys-online-vision-hid-grim-reality.html">completely closed</a> in February (and did not refund students their spring tuition) after attempts to increase enrollment in their online classes, which ironically <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/education/2020/02/concordia-universitys-online-vision-hid-grim-reality.html">led students away</a> from joining campus in-person.</p><p>This is the challenge that many universities face: If they reduce tuition for online classes, it will be harder in future years to convince as many first-time students that the on-campus experience is worth its sticker price.</p><h2>Colleges are facing a "triple whammy"</h2><p>Richard Vedder is a professor emeritus at Ohio University who has been researching the economics of America's higher education system for decades. He says that universities are being hit by a "triple whammy" of government funding cuts for state colleges, dwindling enrollment, and COVID-19 causing pressure to reimburse the spring semester's fees.</p><p>Some universities may try to survive on donor funding, but even large donations won't be able to replace or cover the money that they normally rake in from students. But she didn't get the chance to walk in her graduation ceremony because she couldn't afford the fees.</p><p>She missed out on the milestone event because of a $125 cap-and-gown fee and $160 in other graduation fees that were required to attend the ceremony.</p><p>Brockenbrough is now <a href="https://www.vsu.edu/sola/departments/art-and-design/faculty-staff/brockenbrough-brittany.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an adjunct professor of art and design</a> at Virginia State University. She told Insider that nothing had changed since she graduated; the school was still charging mandatory graduation fees.</p><p>"Every year, I have students who are devastated because, after years of working hard, they can't afford to attend their own graduation," Brockenbrough said.</p><p>Brockenbrough and her students aren't alone. High schools and <a href="https://www.insider.com/georgetown-student-prefers-dating-apps-to-meet-cutes-2023-4">colleges</a> across the US are charging students mandatory graduation fees — sometimes called a walking fee — to walk in their graduation ceremonies. It's locking many out of an education milestone — especially low-income students.</p><h2><strong>Graduation costs for high schoolers and college students can be pricey</strong></h2><p>There are different types of mandatory fees. Most schools require students to purchase or rent a cap and gown. But another fee can come from any outstanding bills that the school charges for textbooks and unpaid lunches. Some schools charge both fees.</p><p>On the high-school level, graduation costs can vary from <a href="https://www.cherrycreekschools.org/Page/9149" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$40</a> to <a href="https://www.nj.com/business/2018/08/what_does_the_senior_year_of_high_school_cost_too.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$500</a>. Some state legislatures have argued for strict penalties for students who can't pay off a fee. A Tennessee Republican proposed in 2020 that schools should withhold graduation from high-school students with jobs if <a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2020/02/05/tennessee-students-could-denied-graduation-not-paying-lunch-debt/4666553002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">they had an outstanding lunch bill</a>.</p><p>Some states have taken steps to eliminate mandatory fees. For example, <a href="https://streaklinks.com/BfqcDRZUVO051hh9pw9e5xUd/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cde.ca.gov%2Fre%2Flr%2Ffm%2Ffma2001.asp%23%3A~%3Atext%3DTherefore%2C%2520the%2520graduation%2520ceremony%2520is%2Cfree%2520of%2520charge%2520to%2520students." target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> and <a href="https://streaklinks.com/BfqcDRVZ2W3klgyn1wqTm6gL/https%3A%2F%2Feducation.mn.gov%2Fmdeprod%2Fgroups%2Feduc%2Fdocuments%2Fbasic%2Fmdaw%2Fmday%2F~edisp%2F002413.pdf%23%3A~%3Atext%3DAnswer%3APublic%2520school%2520districts%2520and%2520charter%2520schools%2520are%2520specifically%2520prohibited%2Cgowns%2520and%2520diplomas." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Minnesota</a> have barred mandatory graduation fees in public schools.</p><p>Likewise, many colleges across the country also charge expensive commencement fees. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it costs over <a href="https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2023/04/university-cost-of-graduating" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$100 to purchase the cap, gown, and tassel</a>. For doctoral students, <a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2022/12/08/donating-graduation-caps-and-gowns-students-need" target="_blank" rel="noopener">regalia can cost $1,000</a>.</p><p>U.S. News and World Report found that some universities were also <a href="https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/college-fees-that-may-surprise-you?slide=12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charging college seniors a fee just to "apply to graduate."</a> At Arizona State University, for example, <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-education/2018/03/28/graduation-asu-ua-nau-arizona-universities-costs-fees/454715002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that could cost $50</a>.</p><p>Schools often report that these graduation fees help pay for <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-education/2018/03/28/graduation-asu-ua-nau-arizona-universities-costs-fees/454715002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">administrative tasks like printing diplomas</a>. The fees also help the school pay for the graduation venue.</p><h2><strong>Critics say these mandatory fees are discriminatory</strong></h2><p>Brockenbrough said there's a belief from school administrators that students should be able to save for these fees, but this isn't possible for everyone. She said some students don't have leftover funds after paying for essentials like food, housing, textbooks, and gas.</p><p>Hope Kirsch, a <a href="https://www.copaa.org/members/?id=16558538" target="_blank" rel="noopener">former teacher and an education attorney in Arizona</a>, said these mandatory fees continued to be charged in public schools because they were yet to be challenged legally.</p><p>"It is discriminatory to bar low-income, marginalized students who can't pay the cap-and-gown fee from attending their own commencement ceremony," <a href="https://streaklinks.com/BfqcDR1vr9vCru290AMnnRsf/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.copaa.org%2Fmembers%2F%3Fid%3D16558538" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kirsch</a> told Insider. </p><p>Kirsch added that even when schools have fee waivers that students can apply for, it could be humiliating to fill out detailed paperwork about their family's finances and share it with their high-school administration.</p><p>Jack Bettilyon, a 23-year-old college student in Georgia, told Insider the mandatory fee was exploitative and that many schools contract with the same cap and gown companies each year — like Jostens, who dominate the market and <a href="https://fredericklantern.com/2107/archives/jostens-isnt-worth-it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">often charge high fees</a>.</p><p>Bettilyon said that many of his high-school friends could not walk due to the cap-and-gown fee. He said he was largely dismissed when he raised concerns with his school.</p><p>"I was told that students should just start saving ahead of time and there is nothing the school can really do about the price because they have a contract with the company that makes the cap and gowns," Bettilyon said.</p><p>Laura Guy, a clinical social worker and <a href="https://sites.google.com/fordham.edu/ccmh/ccmh-team/laura-guy-lcsw-r?authuser=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">program coordinator at the clinical-mental-health program at Fordham University</a>, said missing these right-of-passage events could profoundly affect students.</p><p>"It is a symbolic ceremony about saying goodbye and moving on to the next steps," Guy told Insider, adding that these fees "send the message that no matter how important this moment is, how hard a student worked, or what they achieved, they are not welcome unless they can afford it."</p><h2><strong>There are some resources for students who can't afford these mandatory fees</strong></h2><p>Some schools across the US have addressed this issue by having students apply for a waiver. Santa Fe College, for example, has a program that <a href="https://news.sfcollege.edu/2023/03/23/cap-and-gown-loan-application-is-open/">allows students to apply to borrow a cap and gown</a>. UC Davis similarly lets students apply for an award that would pay the cap-and-gown fee.</p><p>But not all districts and colleges have these programs, and some students rely on external organizations.</p><p>Chenice Brown-Johnson is the founder of <a href="https://streaklinks.com/BfqcDRZ-fiuaPAy54AYPtawB/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.justcforchange.org%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Just C</a>, a non-profit organization that has provided 210 caps and gowns since 2020 to high-school students in Virginia who otherwise would not have been able to walk in their commencement ceremonies.</p><p>"The pay or don't participate system is harmful," Brown told Insider. "Financial hardship should not disqualify you from participating in graduation."</p><p>Kirsch, the education lawyer, said families concerned about required fees should find out what their state policy was and reach out to <a href="https://www.usa.gov/legal-aid" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free legal resources</a> for support.</p><p>But either way, Guy said all students should get the chance to experience their graduation — no matter their financial situation.</p><p>"Graduation should not be a pay-to-play event," Guy said. "It should be a moment for all students to celebrate this milestone with their classmates."</p>

Some colleges let you pay tuition with a credit card - here's how to determine if it's worth it, and what card to use if it is

There are programs and classes outside traditional classrooms that allow you to keep learning for less time and much less money. </p><p>Jeffrey J. Selingo, a higher education adviser,<strong> </strong>highlights the transformation in how how recent college graduates supplement their education before starting a career in his upcoming book, "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/There-Life-After-College-Navigating-ebook/dp/B012ODBR7A" target="_blank">There is Life After College</a>."</p><p>"Rather than plug into the formal learning structure of traditional higher education, new graduates are increasingly turning to a new set of providers that offer education in short spurts, online or in face-to-face classes, for a fraction of the cost of graduate school," Selingo writes.</p><p><span>Obvious exceptions to the alternative grad school path are professionals such as lawyers or doctors,</span><span> but for </span><span>someone who wants to further their education without a firm idea of how or where, a traditional graduate degree might not be worth the years of debt. </span></p><p>Here are three alternatives to traditional graduate schools:</p>

These numbers are solely what students would pay directly to the school, so they're still going to have to cover books, travel, a healthcare plan, and possibly beer.</p><p>Colleges present their fees in different ways; some offer one total price, some pair tuition and fees together, and some list every charge individually. For schools that didn't offer a flat total on their website, we added up the fees that a typical first year student would incur.</p><p><strong>Here's what the most expensive colleges in America are charging their students:</strong></p>

So it's no surprise that online lenders target Ivy League students. </p><p>But Ivy League grads are proving more shrewd at managing their debt than anticipated, preventing borrowers from collecting high interest, <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/lenders-get-burned-betting-on-ivy-leaguers-1462739046">the Wall Street Journal reported.</a></p><p>These grads not only pay off their debt quickly, they aggressively refinance when they can get lower interest rates.</p><p>Online lenders initially targeted Ivy League borrowers for their qualities:<span> good credit, relatively high income levels, and high levels of <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword>. <span>And to entice the students, online lenders offered lower and lower interest rates. Paradoxically, these are the exact traits now hurting the companies. </span></span></p><p><span><span><span>After graduation students are eager to refinance, further incentivized by </span></span></span>online lenders' lack of fees to do so- unlike the federal government or major lenders.</p><p>On top of this, students are paying off their loans in advance, as much as three times faster than in the original terms of their loan, according to The Journal.</p><p>"It surprised me," Gary Lieberman, chairman of Darien Rowayton Bank, told the Journal. "The nature of these borrowers is that they really want to pay off their debt."</p><p>Student loan debt in the US has reached a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-debt-state-of-the-union-2016-1">staggering $1.3 trillion</a>, and many refer to the seemingly inexorable levels of mounting debt as a mounting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-cuban-heres-how-to-fix-the-student-debt-crisis-2015-3">crisis</a>. Student loan debt doesn't target all borrowers equally, however.</p><p>"Half of borrowers exiting school in 2011 attended a for-profit school or a 2-year college," a Brookings <a href="http://www.brookings.edu/about/projects/bpea/papers/2015/looney-yannelis-student-loan-defaults"> paper noted.</a> "These borrowers represented 70% of defaults."</p><p>These defaults hurt lenders, delaying the recovery on their loan investments. Student loan lenders aggressively courted Ivy League borrowers - but now it's backfiring

We looked at <a href="https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/college-rankings/">a report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce</a>, which breaks down the median earnings of students from over 1,400 colleges 10 years after starting their studies, using data from the US Department of <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Education">Education</keyword>'s <a href="https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/">College Scorecard</a>.</p><p>Here, we've highlighted the 25 private colleges in the US where graduates go on to earn the most money, as well as<span> how much students pay annually between tuition, required fees, room, and board. </span></p><p>Read on to see if your alma mater, or current school, made the list:</p>

The 25 private colleges where students go on to earn the most money

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Colleges will often enter agreements with banks to give financial aid to students.</li><li>But the CFPB found those agreements can come with significant fees for students who sign on.</li></ul><p>College students are probably familiar with the sight of a bank handing out free t-shirts, snacks, and other swag to get them to sign up for a bank account. But a new <a href="https://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/documents/cfpb_college-banking-report_2022.pdf">report</a> shows there might be a more sinister side to the banks lobbying on campus for students' dollars. </p><p>Schools' partnerships between major banks like Wells Fargo and PNC may actually lead to students paying more than they might elsewhere, according to an annual report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on student credit cards and bank accounts. The agency used data from 11 bank providers that offered more than 650,000 student accounts at 462 colleges in 2020-21. </p><p>It's another data point showing some of the financial burdens associated with higher education, which still remains the most consistent form of economic mobility for many Americans, but can also strap them with a lifetime of debt.</p><p>Students who commented to the CFPB about these feeds "mentioned that they had to fast for two days, live for a week 'off a 10lb bag of pancake mix from the local food bank,' use candles to reduce electricity costs, forego textbooks and gas due to fees charged on their accounts,'" the report said. "In one case, a commenter even mentioned that overdraft fees led to a situation where they did not graduate."</p><p>Students on financial aid, in particular, might be shouldering more unnecessary fees, CFPB finds. There are a few ways students received the $110 billion in financial aid <a href="https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/fy2021-fsa-annual-report.pdf">given out in fiscal year 2021</a>. In some cases, schools will have a third-party servicer handle it which will "provide students with low-cost options to access funds through college-sponsored prepaid and debit cards linked to deposit accounts," CFPB wrote.</p><p>But some of those partnerships with third-party providers mean schools are guiding students towards products that cost more than what they might find otherwise, according to the report. In one instance, a third-party provider charged students fees if they deposited less than $300 a month — but deposits for financial aid didn't count.</p><p>In 2021, students paid nearly $15.5 million in "account costs," according to the reports. The average student out of the over 668,000 reviewed paid an average of $25.97 on their accounts, with many not making enough income to qualify for the required $300 monthly deposit. Students at for-profit schools saw higher costs for their accounts.</p><p>"Many college students trust that schools have their best interests in mind. While colleges have substantial bargaining power to obtain superior terms and pricing for their students, we find that many college-sponsored financial products cost students more than accounts that are readily available on the open market," CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said in a <a href="https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-report-finds-high-fees-on-student-banking-products-endorsed-by-colleges/">statement</a>. </p><p>The banks also make money from the colleges off these agreements — the report found that colleges paid over $4 million to BankMobile and Herring Bank in 2020-2021, and schools pay providers $11,440 on average per year. </p><p>But this results in unnecessary fees for students who participate, including monthly fees, overdraft fees, inactivity fees, and out-of-network ATM fees of up to $3.50. The report said those additional expenses can be "particularly harmful for consumers who live paycheck-to-paycheck and students who may receive only one financial aid disbursement per semester."</p><p>Alongside the CFPB report, the Education Department released <a href="https://blog.ed.gov/2022/10/colleges-have-a-responsibility-to-protect-students-best-financial-interests/">guidance</a> on a college's responsibility to protect its students and the financial decisions that they make, saying that schools "hold a responsibility to ensure certain products offered to their students are in the best financial interest of those students."</p><p>The department said that it's "concerned" schools are not properly disclosing financial information, and along with the CFPB's efforts, it plans to increase oversight over third-party financial arrangements, improve the process schools use to report any partnerships with banks, and coordinate with the CFPB to determine which arrangements are best for students going forward</p>
