When an infected person coughs or sneezes, droplets carrying viral particles can land on someone else's nose or mouth or get inhaled. But a person can also get the new coronavirus if they touch a surface or object that has viral particles on it then touch their mouth, nose, or eyes, according to the CDC. The exact lifespan of the virus on a surface - a subway pole, stairwell banister, or even money - depends on many factors, including the surrounding temperature, humidity, and type of surface. But the rough range is "likely hours to a day or so," Rachel Graham, an epidemiologist at the <keyword id="390129" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-North-Carolina">University of North Carolina</keyword>, told Business Insider. <h2>How long the coronavirus survives on surfaces </h2>A <a href="https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(20)30046-3/fulltext">study</a> published this week in the Journal of Hospital Infection looked at the lifespans of other coronaviruses found in humans on various surfaces. The SARS coronavirus - at a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) - lasts for two days on steel; four days on wood and glass; and five days on metal, plastic, and ceramics. (The researchers also found that one strain of SARS lasted up to nine days on a plastic surface at room temperature.) SARS only survives between two and eight hours on aluminum, and less than eight hours on latex. According to Graham, these findings likely apply to the new coronavirus, since smooth, nonporous surfaces like doorknobs and tabletops are better at carrying viruses in general. Porous surfaces - like money, hair, and fabric - do not allow viruses to survive as long because the minute spaces or holes in those materials can trap the microbe and prevent its transfer, Graham said. "Coins will transmit virus better than cash, but this shouldn't be a huge concern," she said. "Basic rule of thumb should be to consider money dirty anyway, because it is. An 18-degree Fahrenheit jump, from 68 degrees to 86 degrees, decreased how long SARS lasted on steel surfaces by at least half. That sheath can dry out however, which kills the virus. "We expect a similar effect against the SARS-CoV-2," they added. (SARS-CoV-2 is the official scientific name of the virus.) That duration is probably only essential, however, if you're cleaning a surface in an area inhabited by someone infected. Graham said the important thing when disinfecting a surface is getting the potential infectious dose of the virus below a level that will cause disease. "Most commercial products labeled 'disinfectants' talk about a 99.9% kill rate," she said - that's certainly below the threshold that would make people ill, she added. "Surface disinfectants - like Lysol, bleach - are better for surfaces." <h2>Stop touching your face, and wash your hands</h2>Graham emphasized the importance of washing your hands and not touching your face - those are the best ways to minimize your chances of picking up the coronavirus from surfaces. "He's going to kill somebody," Vincent, now 20, told the Providence Journal. "It's just a matter of time. "Other more ornate frames can add layers of narrative," she explains. It requires some patience and planning, but these steps take the guesswork out of the process, ensuring you end up with an aesthetically pleasing statement wall. <ol><li>Tape up a template. "I like to advise people to trace the outside of their frames onto large paper, cut them out, and move them around on the wall with painters' tape," shares Modica. "You can then really see the symmetry, measure out spacing, and get it completely right before you start banging nails into your wall." You can then hang your gallery pieces directly over the designated paper and then just tug the paper right out.</li><li>Start at about six feet from the floor. A mistake lots of people make is not hanging their wall art at the correct height, says Modica. Generally speaking, the center of the piece should be about six feet from the floor. For a gallery wall, treat the entire grouping as one piece to determine height. Find the center of your grouping and place it six feet from the floor, then complete the other pieces around it.</li><li>Place the largest piece in the center. "For almost all gallery walls, it looks best to have the largest piece in the center and smallest on the outside," says Modica. "You can play with this by tucking small pieces throughout a bit, but be sure your largest frames are in the center. Otherwise, it gives a feeling of being weighted wrong and off-kilter."</li><li>Watch for spacing issues. According to Chris Alexakis, Director of Product &amp; Design and Co-founder of Cabinet Select, when a gallery wall looks uneven or awkward, the chances are high that the problem lies in a frame's spacing distance. "An even distance makes the gallery wall cleaner and does not look cramped," says Alexakis. "In general, aim for three to six inches of space between each artwork for the best results."</li><li>Place smaller pieces moving from the center out. Placing smaller pieces along the perimeter of your collection of larger frames will help to foster an aesthetically pleasing and balanced look. You should also consider adding additional small-sized frames as needed to patch up any bare spots you might have overlooked.</li><li>Level each and every frame. Leveling matters! Be sure your pieces are all level on their own and with each other. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, droplets carrying viral particles can land on someone else's nose or mouth or get inhaled. But a person can sometimes get the coronavirus if they touch a surface or object that has viral particles on it and then touch their mouth, nose, or eyes. The lifespan of the virus on a surface depends on myriad factors, including the surrounding temperature, humidity, and type of surface. <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2004973">A study</a> published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests the virus can live up to four hours on copper, up to a day on cardboard, and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel. The coronavirus can also live in the air for up to three hours, the study authors found. <h2>How long the coronavirus can survive on surfaces</h2>The researchers compared the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-surfaces-how-to-disinfect-2020-3">new coronavirus' lifespan</a> on surfaces to that of the SARS coronavirus in a 70-degree Fahrenheit room at 40% relative humidity. They found that both coronaviruses lived the longest on stainless steel and polypropylene, a type of plastic used in everything from food-storage containers to toys. Both viruses lasted up to three days on plastic, and the new coronavirus lasted up to three days on steel. On cardboard, however, the new coronavirus lasted three times longer than SARS did: 24 hours, compared to eight hours. Shayanne Gal/Business Insider Temperature and humidity play a big role in how long the virus can survive. <a href="https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(20)30046-3/fulltext">A recent study</a> found that an 18-degree Fahrenheit jump, from 68 degrees to 86 degrees, decreased how long SARS lasted on steel surfaces by at least half. <a href="https://www.ssrn.com/abstract=3551767">New research</a> also found that increases in relative humidity <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-cases-flu-like-drop-linked-with-high-heat-humidity-2020-3">reduces how readily the virus can spread between between</a>. Basically, humidity is how much moisture is in the air, or how clammy your skin feels outside. As relative humidity approaches 100%, sweat less readily evaporates into the air. That mugginess makes it challenging for viral droplets to <a href="https://www.livescience.com/27533-flu-transmission-humidity.html">survive in the air</a> and spread between people. <h2>You're unlikely to get the coronavirus from your Amazon package</h2>Despite that day-long lifespan on cardboard, it's unlikely that anyone could contract the new coronavirus from a cardboard box, like those that get delivered from Amazon. That's because shipping conditions make it difficult for the coronavirus to survive. "We know that viruses are likely to only live a few hours to a few days under the sort of conditions we expose packages to, including shifts in temperature and humidity," Rachel Graham, an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-risk-from-packages-how-to-clean-if-you-want-2020-3">previously told Business Insider</a>. That sheath can dry out, however, killing the virus. According to the CDC, "there is likely <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.html">very low risk of spread from products or packaging</a> that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures." If you're still concerned about your packages, Graham suggests using surface disinfectants like Lysol or bleach. These disinfectants could work within 15 seconds, but if you want to be extra-careful, you can wait between five and six minutes, she said. This precaution is likely unnecessary. "If we had transmission via packages we would have seen immediate global spread out of China early in the outbreak," Elizabeth McGraw, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Pennsylvania State University, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-packages-2020-3">previously told Business Insider</a>. "We did not see that and therefore I think the risk is incredibly low," she added. The team is on the hook for his entire remaining salary, which comes out to a staggering $49.8 million.The Red Sox have ten days to try to trade Sandoval. More likely, they will either try to send him to the minor - a move he can reject - or they would just release him. Teams will be able to sign him for the league minimum once he hits the open market, but the Red Sox will still be obligated to pay the money owed on his guaranteed contract.The Sandoval contract will go down as one of the worst in the history of sports. The Venezuelan was a force to be reckoned with during the first seven seasons of his career, in which he posted 946 hits and a 123 OPS+ for the San Francisco Giants. He earned two All-Star appearances and batted .344 in the postseason, serving as a spiritual leader of three World Series-winning squads. Sandoval's deal with the Red Sox was seen as a slight overpay, but not exorbitant for a 28-year-old third baseman with that kind of resume.And yet, Sandoval compiled a .237/.286/.360 slash line during his time in Boston. Injured for nearly all of the 2016 season and a good bit of this one, he made just 653 total plate appearances - about one season's worth - and was an astonishing -2.0 WAR (Wins Above Replacement, or in this case below replacement-level).Sandoval was also a constant distraction for the team. He struggled with his weight and <a href="http://nesn.com/2015/06/pablo-sandoval-benched-for-violating-red-soxs-social-media-policy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">violated the Red Sox's social media policy</a> - and that was just in the first year of his deal.
