<ul><li><keyword id="14371217" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="filmmaker-quentin-tarantino" source="Orion">Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino</keyword> is working on his last film, the report suggests.</li><li>As per the outlet's sources, the story is set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead at its center.</li></ul>If reports are to be believed, filmmaker <keyword id="27848" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="quentin-tarantino" source="Orion">Quentin Tarantino</keyword> is working on his last film.<br /><br />The Movie Critic is the name of the script that Tarantino wrote and is prepping to direct this fall, The Hollywood Reporter reported.<br /><br />As per the outlet's sources, the story is set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead at its center.<br /><br />Apparently, the story focuses on <keyword id="300110" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pauline-kael" source="Orion">Pauline Kael</keyword>, one of the most influential movie critics of all time. <keyword id="16793738" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kael" source="Orion">Kael</keyword>, who died in 2001, was not just a critic but also an essayist and novelist. She was known for her pugnacious fights with editors as well as filmmakers.<br /><br />In the late 1970s, Kael had a very brief tenure working as a consultant for Paramount, a position she accepted at the behest of actor <keyword id="25157" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="warren-beatty" source="Orion">Warren Beatty</keyword>. The timing of that Paramount job seems to coincide with the setting of the script -- and the filmmaker is known to have a deep respect for Kael, making the odds of her being the subject of the film more likely.<br /><br />Tarantino has for two decades commanded the ability to attract the most coveted actors, working with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt two times each. He directed Christoph Waltz to two Oscar wins. Samuel L. Jackson is a frequent collaborator. If this truly is his final film, he will have no shortage of thespians dropping everything to line up for roles.<br /><br />The filmmaker has long maintained he had a finite number of movies in him, saying he wanted to direct 10 films or retire by the time he was 60. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Quentin Tarantino's 10th and supposedly final film, "The Movie Critic," is in the works.</li><li>The movie is set in California in the '70s and centers on a film critic who works for a porn magazine.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/every-quentin-tarantino-movies-ranked-worst-to-best-2019-7">Quentin Tarantino</a>'s (supposed) swan song is imminent.</p><p>The legendary director is currently working on "The Movie Critic," which he says will be his 10th and final film. Details are sparse, but the movie is expected to be released in 2025.</p><p>Here's everything we know, so far.</p><h2>Is this <em>really</em> going to be Tarantino's last film?</h2><div type="image" title="Quentin Tarantino with his award for best original screenplay for &quot;Django Unchained&quot; at the 2013 Oscars." height="1888" width="2788" msid="107372874" hostid="261" sizebytes="91970"></div><p>For more than a decade, Tarantino has declared that he wants to stop directing films after his 10th movie. According to the filmmaker, he's concerned that the quality of his projects could decline if he continues for too long.</p><p>"In a fanciful world, 10 movies in my filmography would be nice," he told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/nov/16/quentin-tarantino-hints-retirement">Playboy</a> magazine in 2012.</p><p>"I just don't want to be an old-man filmmaker," he said. "Directors don't get better as they get older. Usually, the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end."</p><p>The award-winning director and screenwriter <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2014/11/quentin-tarantino-retirement-hateful-eight-international-release-1201280583/">elaborated</a> two years later, saying that he'd prefer to retire on a high note.</p><p>"I don't believe you should stay onstage until people are begging you to get off," he said. "I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more. I do think directing is a young man's game, and I like the idea of an umbilical cord connection from my first to my last movie."</p><p>"If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don't screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career," he said, adding that he's not opposed to coming out of retirement for a good movie, but he's also content to stop while he's ahead.</p><p>During a 2019 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/quentin-tarantino-says-his-10th-final-film-will-be-epilogue-y-1230249/">press conference</a> for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Tarantino said that he's envisioned his final movie as "a little more epilogue-y."</p><p>Tarantino has stood by his comments, telling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/18/entertainment/quentin-tarantino-movie-10-last-one-hollywood-film/index.html">CNN's Chris Wallace</a> in 2022 that he's ready to "wrap up the show."</p><p>"I don't want to become this old man who's out of touch," he said. "Already I'm feeling a bit like an old man out of touch when it comes to the current movies that are out right now."</p><p>How steadfast Tarantino is in his decision to retire from filmmaking remains to be seen. After all, directors before him — like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/10/movies/logan-lucky-steven-soderbergh-interview.html">Steven Soderbergh</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/david-lynch-retirement-filmmaking-1201832700/">David Lynch</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/danidiplacido/2024/01/15/how-many-times-has-hayao-miyazaki-retired/">Hayao Miyazaki</a> — have un-retired or walked back comments after making grand declarations.</p><h2>The movie is inspired by a real-life film critic who worked for a pornography magazine</h2><p>When "The Movie Critic" was first reported to be in the works back in March, the premise was a little bit different. At the time, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/quentin-tarantino-sets-the-movie-critic-final-movie-1235351260/">The Hollywood Reporter</a> reported that the film would be set in Los Angeles in the 1970s and center on a female character. The publication also implied that Pauline Kael, who wrote film reviews for The New Yorker and died in 2001, inspired the premise.</p><p>During an interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2023/05/quentin-tarantino-new-movie-cannes-breaking-baz-rolling-thunder-1235379542/">Deadline</a> at Cannes in May 2023, Tarantino said that the movie takes place in California in 1977.</p><p>But contradictory to THR's report, Tarantino said the titular character "is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag."</p><p>Tarantino described the person who inspired the movie as "cynical as hell" and "very funny" in his writing. At the time of the interview, the filmmaker ruled out Leonardo DiCaprio and Pitt as the leads, saying they were too old for the part. The real-life critic died in his late 30s.</p><p>"I haven't decided yet but it's going to be somebody in the 35-year-old ballpark," he told Deadline. "It'll definitely be a new leading man for me."</p><h2>Brad Pitt is reportedly set to star in 'The Movie Critic'</h2><div type="image" title="Brad Pitt at the pre-premiere of the film &quot;Babylon&quot; in Paris in January 2023." height="5300" width="7066" msid="107372878" hostid="261" sizebytes="3680834"></div><p><a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2024/02/brad-pitt-quentin-tarantino-the-movie-critic-reunite-1235811357/">Deadline</a> was the first to report Pitt's involvement in early February. It's unclear if the actor will play the lead role or another character, though Deadline suspects it's the former.</p><p>This marks Tarantino and Pitt's third collaboration. Pitt previously portrayed Lieutenant Aldo Raine in the 2009 movie "Inglourious Basterds" and stuntman Cliff Booth in the 2019 film "Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood" — which earned him his first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oscars-2020-nominations-winners-list-2020-1">Oscar</a> for acting.</p><h2>There's no release date yet</h2><p>According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/brad-pitt-circling-role-in-quentin-tarantino-movie-critic-1235812995/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, filming will begin in 2024 or early 2025 in hopes of a 2025 release. The most recent was a 7-foot sculpture pictured on a beach in the UK. </li></ul><p>Since early November, people across the world have been stumbling across mysterious metallic monoliths. The first was found in <a href="https://www.insider.com/monolith-timeline-appearances-disappearances-californai-utah-romania-2020-12#the-first-monolith-was-discovered-in-utah-on-november-18-1">Utah followed by another in Romania</a>, which quickly and mysteriously disappeared.</p><p>The origins of the monoliths remain a mystery, but since the first sighting, people have inevitably called back to Stanley Kubrick's seminal 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey," which features a series of monoliths as a sign of extraterrestrial life.</p><p>And Joy Cuff, who worked with Stanley Kubrick on "2001: A Space Odyssey" as a visual effects artist, told Insider that the recent discoveries "would've blown" the legendary director's mind.</p><p>"Stanley would've been really quite excited about this I'm sure," Cuff told Insider during a phone call earlier this week. "It would've been amazing. Imagine this had arisen when we were doing this in '66 or '67. I think it would've blown his mind actually. It's quite something."</p><div type="image" title="Monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey" height="650" width="870" msid="79629605" hostid="261"></div><h2>'It does make you think why should we be the only people?'</h2><p>Joy, who was only 21 when she was hired by Kubrick to create the film's distinct moon sets, said Stanley "would've found it really very interesting,"</p><p>"In the archives, there's all the research that he did on all the UFO sightings, and he used to look up lay lines. He was interested in it," but Joy said she finds the discoveries "kind of shivery."</p><p>"I think blimey," she said. "I was looking at the one in Romania, and it's in the open air. And you think how did somebody or anything appear there and nobody else saw it arrive? It does make you think, why should we be the only people? And we are making such a mess of everything now anyway. Somebody might come along a wipe us out."</p><div type="image" title="monolith, UFO, Utah" height="729" width="972" msid="79629609" hostid="261"></div><p>"2001" was first released in April 1968 and was produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick from a script written by both Kubrick and the legendary science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke.</p><p>At the time, "2001" was largely <a href="http://scrapsfromtheloft.com/2017/01/05/pauline-kael-on-2001-a-space-odyssey/">panned by influential critics like Pauline Kael</a> who said the movie would end Kubrick's career, but today the film is considered one of the most important productions ever made, largely thanks to its technical mastery and scientific accuracy. At the time of filming, humans had yet to reach the moon.</p><p>"We had to make decisions like: 'How's the moon?' Is it soft or is it dust? Is it hard?" Joy said. "I couldn't say anything, but when I left I thought what on earth does he mean." But Joy says Kubrick later asked her whether she knew of any young sculptors that could work on the film.</p><p>"I had a very good friend," she said. "We were at school and art school together, and she was a struggling sculptor then working in greengrocers and doing sculpture at night time. So I gave him the name and she arrived and the rest is history. '2001: A Space Odyssey' visual effects artist says recent monolith findings 'would've blown' Stanley Kubrick's mind

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes has become the go-to for discerning moviegoers when they need to decide if it's worth dishing out their hard-earned cash on the latest cineplex offerings.</p><p>But director/producer Brett Ratner (the man behind the "Rush Hour" franchise) isn't a fan of the site, to put it lightly.</p><p>"The worst thing that we have in today's movie culture is Rotten Tomatoes," Ratner <a href="http://ew.com/movies/2017/03/23/ratner-tomatoes-scores/" target="_blank">said</a> while speaking at the Sun Valley Film Festival this past weekend.</p><p>Ratner's company RatPac Entertainment cofinanced "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (and countless other big-budget movies), and as he makes clear, he's still feeling the sting of the critical backlash against that superhero blockbuster, despite its massive box-office gross (it currently sits at a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/batman_v_superman_dawn_of_justice" target="_blank">rotten 27%</a>).</p><p>"I think it's the destruction of our business. I have such respect and admiration for film criticism," Ratner said. "When I was growing up film criticism was a real art. And there was intellect that went into that. And you would read Pauline's Kael's reviews, or some others, and that doesn't exist anymore. Now it's about a number. A compounded number of how many positives vs. negatives. Now it's about, 'What's your Rotten Tomatoes score?' And that's sad, because the Rotten Tomatoes score was so low on 'Batman v Superman' I think it put a cloud over a movie that was incredibly successful."</p><p>Rotten Tomatoes has become such a resource for audiences that if a movie has a high rating on the site, it's often used in promotion for the film.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Ratner has never received much love from the site's scores for the <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/brett_ratner" target="_blank">movies he's directed</a> (his highest as a director was 69% for 2002's "Red Dragon"). And the stigma of a rotten score for a film like "Batman v Superman" is a concern to Ratner.</p><p>"People don't realize what goes into making a movie like that," Ratner said. "It's mind-blowing. It's just insane, it's hurting the business, it's getting people to not see a movie. In Middle America it's, 'Oh, it's a low Rotten Tomatoes score so I'm not going to go see it because it must suck.' But that number is an aggregate and one that nobody can figure out exactly what it means, and it's not always correct. I've seen some great movies with really abysmal Rotten Tomatoes scores. What's sad is film criticism has disappeared.
