Paul Selva, who advised President Donald Trump as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is among <a href="https://www.nationalsecurityleaders4biden.com/">nearly 500 former national security leaders who endorsed Democratic nominee Joe Biden for president in an open letter</a> Thursday.</p><p>Selva, a four-star general who served during the Obama administration, was re-nominated by Trump to serve as the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a group of senior uniformed leaders who advise the president. He retired last summer.</p><p>As the second highest-ranking military officer, he had a front-row seat to major crises, such as tensions with North Korea that nearly ignited a war.</p><p>While retired Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, who served as the top general and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has chosen to stay out of <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword>, and refusing to comment on the president, Selva has publicly endorsed Trump's political opponent.</p><p>In an "<a href="https://www.nationalsecurityleaders4biden.com/">Open Letter to America</a>," 489 former national security leaders, to include 22 four-star generals, backed Biden over Trump.</p><p>"The next president will inherit a nation – and a world – in turmoil," the letter reads. "The current President has demonstrated he is not equal to the enormous responsibilities of his office; he cannot rise to meet challenges large or small."</p><p>"Joe Biden has the character, principles, wisdom, and leadership necessary to address a world on fire," the letter concludes.</p><p>The letter published Thursday by "National Security Leaders for Biden" comes on the heels of <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2020/09/15/dozens-of-retired-generals-admirals-sign-letter-backing-trump-reelection.html">an open letter signed by 235 retired senior military officers backing Trump's re-election</a>.</p><p>That letter, which was signed by eight former four-star generals, states that the signers "believe that President Donald Trump is committed to a strong America" and that as president, "he will continue to secure our borders, defeat our adversaries, and restore law and order domestically."</p><p>While the active-duty military strives to remain apolitical, it is not uncommon for retired military leaders to publicly endorse a presidential candidate.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>During his presidency, Trump wanted to hold a big military parade in the nation's capital.</li><li>After attending France's Bastille Day celebration, he said he wanted a parade for July Fourth.</li></ul><p>The second-highest-ranking US general at the time told then-President Donald Trump that his idea for a big military parade in Washington, DC, was "what dictators do," a new book says. </p><p>Trump, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-military-parade-2018-2">as has been previously reported</a>, crafted the idea for a military parade after witnessing a lavish Bastille Day celebration in Paris in 2017. He wanted to top it with one of his own during the Fourth of July holiday. </p><p>Top US generals and officials were less thrilled about the idea, according to an <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/08/15/inside-the-war-between-trump-and-his-generals">excerpt</a> from a forthcoming book by journalists Susan Glasser and Peter Baker that was published Monday by The New Yorker.</p><p>James Mattis, Trump's defense secretary at the time, said he would "rather swallow acid," and other officials said it would cost millions and damage the roads.</p><p>At one White House meeting, when Trump addressed his idea with Air Force Gen. Paul Selva, then the second-highest-ranking general as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Selva suggested the idea was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dictators-strongmen-military-parades-world-2019-7">reminiscent of something often seen in dictatorships</a>.</p><p>According to the book, when Trump asked Selva what he thought of the parade, Selva said he grew up in Portugal, which "was a dictatorship — and parades were about showing the people who had the guns."</p><p>"And in this country, we don't do that," Selva said. "It's not who we are."</p><p>Trump then asked Selva whether or not he liked the idea, to which he responded: "No." He added, "It's what dictators do."</p><p>The US has held some military parades in Washington, DC, most recently in 1991 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-military-parade-washington-gulf-war-1991-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">after America's victory in the Gulf War</a>. After facing pushback on his plans, Trump held a "Salute to America" event on the Fourth of July in 2019 that prominently featured a military flyover and some static military-vehicle displays but no tanks in the streets.</p><p>Throughout his time in the White House, Trump often expressed admiration for dictators or authoritarians like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping — leaders who hold <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dictators-strongmen-military-parades-world-2019-7">massive military parades</a> each year. Political scientists who specialize in authoritarianism often said Trump's rhetoric and lack of respect for democratic norms <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-has-enabled-autocrats-like-putin-become-presidents-for-life-2020-1">emboldened such leaders</a>.</p><p>Fiona Hill, who served as the top Russia expert on the National Security Council under the Trump administration, said in comments to The Daily Beast last year that Trump had a bad case of "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fiona-hill-trump-has-a-bad-case-of-autocrat-envy-2021-10">autocrat envy</a>."</p><p>"He also really liked kings and queens," Hill added of Trump. </p>

2nd-highest ranking US military officer reportedly slammed his hands on table after growing tired of John Bolton's aides at fiery meeting

<ul class="summary-list"><li>President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>'s claim that the US was developing a "super-duper missile" that was faster than any system publicly known was widely met with confusion.</li><li>Trump has previously described weapons in similar terms and claimed the US possessed "super-fast missiles" that were "four, five, six, and even seven times faster than an ordinary missile."</li><li>But Trump's suggestions that the weapons are faster than missiles currently held by the US or other countries is false and reflects a misunderstanding of their capabilities.</li></ul><p>President Donald Trump's claim that the US was developing a "super-duper missile" capable of reaching speeds far greater than any system publicly known was widely met with confusion from experts and by silence from US officials.</p><p>During an unveiling ceremony for the new Space Force flag at the White House on Friday, Trump compared the US's defense capabilities with that of foreign adversaries and claimed the US was developing a missile capable of reaching a speed that would be the "fastest in the world by a factor of almost three."</p><p>"I call it the 'super-duper missile,' and I heard the other night 17 times faster than what they have right now, when you take the fastest missile we have right now," Trump said.</p><p>"You've heard Russia has five times and China's working on five or six times — we have one 17 times, and it's just gotten the go-ahead," Trump added. "Seventeen times faster, if you can believe that."</p><p>Trump appeared to be referring to the Pentagon's work on <keyword id="272485" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="hypersonic">hypersonic</keyword> weapons, namely nimble hypersonic glide vehicles (HGV) that can reach speeds of at least Mach 5, or roughly 3,800 mph.</p><p>Chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman seemed to confirm the president was referring to hypersonic weapons in a reply to a <a href="https://twitter.com/ChiefPentSpox/status/1261423973247733762?s=20">tweet</a> about the comment: "The Department of Defense is working on developing a range of hypersonic missiles to counter our adversaries."</p><p>Trump used a similar description for hypersonic weapons <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-white-house-business-session-nations-governors/">in February</a>, saying that the US possessed "super-fast missiles" that were "four, five, six, and even seven times faster than an ordinary missile."</p><p><div type="image" title="A common hypersonic glide body (C-HGB) launches from Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time, March 19, 2020, during a Department of Defense flight experiment." height="500" width="1000" msid="75836170" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Hypersonic prototypes have been of interest to the Defense Department since the early 2000s, with advocates of the program pointing to technological advances made by Russia and China. The US <a href="https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Releases/Release/Article/2119458/department-of-defense-tests-hypersonic-glide-body/">successfully tested</a> an unarmed hypersonic glide body in March, while Russia and China are <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/weapons/R45811.pdf">expected</a> to field operational HGVs as early as this year.</p><p>US Air Force Gen. Paul Selva, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, suggested the US was still in the race, despite the two adversaries outpacing it in hypersonic weapons testing: "We have lost our technical advantage in hypersonics," Selva said <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/pentagon/2018/03/06/hypersonics-highest-technical-priority-for-pentagon-rd-head/">in January</a>, according to Defense <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword>. "We haven't lost the hypersonics fight."</p><p>According to Kingston Reif, director for disarmament and threat reduction policy at the Arms Control Association, Trump's mention of speeds that were "17 times faster" could have been in reference to the estimated speeds of the HGVs, which range from at least Mach 5 to around Mach 20.</p><p>But Trump's suggestion that HGVs are faster than existing missiles is false and reflects a misunderstanding of their capabilities, Reif added.</p><p>"The reported speed of these weapons (and hypersonic cruise missiles, which are slower than HGVs) are indeed faster than existing conventionally armed US air- and sea-delivered missiles such as the [Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile] and Tomahawk cruise missiles, which fly at subsonic speeds," Reif said. "But they are not faster than US nuclear-armed intercontinental-range ballistic missiles. Trump says Iran made a 'very big mistake' by shooting down a US drone in an ominous tweet

And Russia has sought to take advantage of these new conditions.</p><p>At the Center for Strategic and International Studies <a href="https://www.csis.org/events/innovation-defense-department-general-paul-selva" target="_blank">last week</a>, US Gen. Zukunft as saying in July 2015. "We're not playing in this game at all."</p><p>"We basically have nothing," Sen. Angus King (I-ME), echoed last week to reporters upon returning from a trip to Greenland, the Washington Examiner <a href="http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/coast-guard-to-release-icebreaker-request-for-proposals-this-winter/article/2600290" target="_blank">reports</a>.</p><p>"The president put money in his budget this year to start the process of a new icebreaker, but by the time a new icebreaker is built, the current one will be way beyond its current life, so it's a replacement not a new one," King said.</p><p>When asked about the procurement of the icebreakers Gen. <p class="source"><span>KCNA via Reuters</span></p><p>North Korea may be gearing up to test an intercontinental or intermediate-range ballistic missile, US intelligence <a href="https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/07/19/politics/north-korea-possible-missile-test/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">sources told CNN on Wednesday</a>.</p><p>Officials who viewed new satellite imagery and studied North Korean radar emissions said that the country could test another missile in two weeks, according to CNN. This would be its first test since the original test of the ICBM, the Hwasong-14, on July 4.</p><p>Shea Cotton, a research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, pointed out on Twitter that North Korea has <a href="https://twitter.com/Shea_Cotton/status/887741879256719360" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">launched, on average, one missile every 14 days during 2017</a>.</p><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the National Space Development General Satellite Control and Command Centre in an undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency, May 3, 2015.</p><p>Although North Korea's development of an ICBM represents a huge milestone, it still has some considerable distance to go before perfecting the missile and therefore needs to continue testing.</p><p>"I am reasonably confident in the ability of our intelligence community to monitor the testing but not the deployment of these missile systems," Air Force Gen. North Korea may be gearing up for another ICBM test launch

The drone the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot out of the sky happens to be one of the US military's most advanced and expensive unmanned aircraft.</p><p>The Iranians shot down a US Navy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iranian-boat-took-shot-at-us-drone-before-tanker-attack-2019-6">Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS-D)</a> intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, specifically a RQ-4A Global Hawk <span>High-Altitude, Long, Endurance (HALE) drone which the military uses to sweep across oceans and coastal waterways for adversaries' submarines and ships. </span></p><p><span>The US military called the incident "an unprovoked attack on a US surveillance asset in international airspace" over the Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The Iranians have accused the US drone of entering Iranian airspace, an allegation CENTCOM characterized as completely false.</span></p><p><span>The RQ-4 is one of the most advanced drones being employed operationally, The War Zone <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/28613/everything-we-know-about-irans-claim-that-it-shot-down-a-u-s-rq-4-global-hawk-drone">explained</a>. These UAVs, Northrop Grumman airplanes that have been used extensively in the Persian Gulf, rely on a suite of high-end electronic sensors and other intelligence gathering systems to peer into other countries.</span></p><p><span>The aircraft, which is used by both the US Air Force and the US Navy, has a price tag higher than the US military's new F-35 stealth fighters. A Global Hawk has a unit cost of roughly $123 million while an F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter costs only $89 million.</span></p><p><span>"This isn't a throwaway drone whose loss the US will just shrug off," Ulrike E. Franke, a drone expert with the European Council on Foreign Relations, <a href="https://twitter.com/RikeFranke/status/1141617041373388800">said</a> on Twitter. </span><span>But it's not just the price tag that makes the loss of this drone a big deal. "This drone was specifically designed to be largely invulnerable," she added.</span></p><p><span>"The RQ-4 flies at upwards of 65,000 feet," Tyler Rogoway, editor of the War Zone, <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/28613/everything-we-know-about-irans-claim-that-it-shot-down-a-u-s-rq-4-global-hawk-drone">wrote</a>, "so this would have been a sophisticated radar-guided surface-to-air missile that shot the aircraft down, not a shoulder-fired, heat-seeking missile."</span></p><p>Iran claims that the IRGC shot down the US drone with an upgraded <span>Khordad missile <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defense">defense</keyword> system, which Breaking Defense <a href="https://breakingdefense.com/2019/06/us-iran-shoots-down-global-hawk-second-drone-down-this-month/?_ga=2.104505030.779183169.1560135958-763343312.1539980600">reports</a> can detect and track targets 95 miles away and down them at a distance of 30 miles.</span></p><p><span>The latest incident comes just days after an the crew of an Iranian boat fired an SA-7 surface-to-air missile at a MQ-9 Reaper drone, a roughly $15 million drone, but missed. Iran just shot down one of the US military's most advanced drones - it costs more than an F-35 stealth fighter

The president told reporters that the waterway is less strategically significant than its once was.</span></p><p><span>"Other places get such vast amounts of oil there," Trump <a href="https://time.com/5608787/iran-oil-tanker-attack-very-minor/">explained</a> to TIME, adding, "We get very little. We have made tremendous progress in the last two and a half years in energy. And when the pipelines get built, we're now an exporter of energy. So we're not in the position that we used to be in in the Middle East where … some people would say we were there for the oil."</span></p><p><span>The Trump administration is sending very mixed messages as the standoff continues in the tinderbox region. </span></p><p><span>"The risks of miscalculation are real," Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Trump says tanker attacks aren't worth a fight with Iran as the US military prepares for confrontation

Paul Selva, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the US military expressed optimism about the possibility of destroying most of the infrastructure behind North Korea's nuclear missile program.</p><p>Although he declined to provide specifics, Selva said that the military could "get at most of [Kim Jong Un's] infrastructure," <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/us-can-destroy-most-of-n-koreas-nuclear-missile-infrastructure-top-general-says/2018/01/30/c6a9e9c4-05f1-11e8-b48c-b07fea957bd5_story.html?utm_term=.d6063275716c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Washington Post</a>.</p><p>Trump's comments also come amid reports of the White House's decision to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/disagreement-on-north-korea-policy-could-derail-white-house-choice-for-ambassador-to-south-korea/2018/01/30/3a21191c-05da-11e8-94e8-e8b8600ade23_story.html?utm_term=.cca4bb152910" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pass over</a> Victor Cha's nomination for US ambassador to South Korea.</p><p>Cha, who served as director for Asian affairs for the National Security Council during the George W. Trump touts 'maximum pressure' against North Korea in State of the Union address
