<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="10715466" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="paul-grisham">Paul Grisham</keyword>'s <keyword id="6358920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wallet">wallet</keyword> was missing for so long at the bottom of the world he forgot all about it.</li><li>He joined the <keyword id="42407" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy">Navy</keyword> in 1948 and sent to Antarctica to work as a meteorologist for 13 months.</li><li>The wallet was returned to him by a father-daughter duo and a veteran's tribute organization.</li></ul><p>Paul Grisham returned home from his 13-month assignment in Antarctica in 1968, but his wallet didn't.</p><p>Grisham, 91, joined the Navy in 1948 and worked as a weather technician before being shipped to the frozen continent to work as a meteorologist.</p><p>After five decades, Grisham was reunited with his wallet - which he forgot all about.</p><p>"I was just blown away," Grisham told <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/san-diego/story/2021-02-04/san-diego-man-reunited-with-wallet-lost-in-antarctica-53-years-ago">The San Diego Union-Tribune</a> after the wallet was returned on March 31. "There was a long series of people involved who tracked me down and ran me to ground."</p><p>Inside the wallet were Grisham's navy ID, driving license, a beer ration punch card, a recipe, a tax withholding statement, and receipts for money orders sent to his wife.</p><p>The recovered billfold was found by Stephen Decato and his daughter Sarah Lindbergh, both of New Hampshire, and Bruce McKee of the Indiana Spirit of '45 nonprofit foundation, according to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/06/wallet-lost-in-antarctica-turns-up-in-california-53-years-later">the Guardian</a>.</p><p>Decato found the bracelet in a shop and bought it. With the help of his daughter, he found McKee's organization and saw an online post to help find the owner.  Soon after, Grisham and his wallet were together again.</p><p>Grisham told the Union-Tribune that his time in Antarctica was "unusual and memorable." The temperature in the winter months would drop as low as -65 degrees.</p><p>"Let me just say this, if I took a can of soda pop and set it outside on the step, if I didn't retrieve it in 14 minutes it would pop open because it had frozen," Grisham told the outlet.</p>

Martin and other authors are suing ChatGPT owner OpenAI claiming copyright infringement. </li><li>The lawsuit alleges OpenAI is using the works of authors to train ChatGPT without their consent.</li></ul><p>Writers have launched yet another lawsuit against <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.</a></p><p>On Tuesday, the Authors Guild — a group that represents <a target="_blank" href="https://authorsguild.org/news/ag-and-authors-file-class-action-suit-against-openai/#:~:text=As%20the%20oldest%20and%20largest,has%20expertise%20in%20copyright%20law.">nearly 14,000 U.S. authors</a> — and prominent writers within it sued OpenAI in the Southern District of New York over allegations that the ChatGPT-maker trained its large language AI models on the works of authors like George R.R. Martin, the novelist behind the book "A Game of Thrones," and John Grisham without their consent.</p><p>Through nonconsensual training, the conversational AI chatbot would "allow anyone to generate" texts that the publishers would "otherwise pay writers to create," and "spit out derivative works" based on summaries or paraphrases, <a target="_blank" href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.606655/gov.uscourts.nysd.606655.1.0_1.pdf">according to the lawsuit.</a> In turn, the lawsuit alleges that OpenAI's LLMs could "endanger" the ability for fiction writers to make a living.</p><p>"These algorithms are at the heart of Defendants' massive commercial enterprise," the lawsuit states. "And at the heart of these algorithms is systematic theft on a mass scale."</p><p>The writers "seeks damages for the lost opportunity to license their works," according to the suit, and a "permanent injunction to prevent these harms from occurring."</p><p>The ability for ChatGPT to mimic the works of authors, according to the Guild, could spell trouble for the publishing industry. <a target="_blank" href="https://authorsguild.org/news/ag-and-authors-file-class-action-suit-against-openai/">In a public statement discussing the lawsuit</a>, the Guild cited its latest author income survey which found that the median salary for a full-time author as of 2022 was "just barely over $20,000," and that nearly half of the authors surveyed earned less than the median.</p><p>"Generative AI threatens to decimate the author profession," the Guild said in its statement.</p><p>In response to the lawsuit, OpenAI told Insider that the company respects "the rights of writers and authors" and has been "working cooperatively" with creators globally to "understand and discuss their concerns about AI."</p><p>"We're optimistic we will continue to find mutually beneficial ways to work together to help people utilize new technology in a rich content ecosystem," OpenAI wrote in a statement.</p><p>This latest lawsuit joins a series of legal disputes that writers have launched against OpenAI on similar accusations of copyright infringement. These lawsuits come as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-sag-aftra-actors-wga-writers-unions-strike-hollywood">Hollywood writers continue to strike</a>, in part, out of fears that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-jobs-at-risk-replacement-artificial-intelligence-ai-labor-trends-2023-02">powerful AI technology could potentially replace their jobs</a>.</p><p>In late June, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-copyright-lawsuit-authors-chatgpt-trained-on-books-2023-7">award-winning authors Mona Awad and Paul Tremblay sued OpenAI</a> on allegations that the company "ingested" their books to train ChatGPT. Weeks later, comedian <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-comedian-sarah-silverman-is-suing-the-company-behind-chatgpt-2023-7">Sarah Silverman</a> — alongside authors Christophe Golden and Richard Kadrey — sued OpenAI over similar allegations. As of August, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-times-could-sue-openai-over-tense-licensing-negotiations-2023-8">The New York Times</a> is considering suing OpenAI over claims that its news articles are being fed to ChatGPT.</p><p>It's not just writers suing OpenAI. In January, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-art-artists-getty-images-lawsuits-stable-diffusion-2023-1">a trio of artists launched a lawsuit against Stability AI, Midjourney, and Deviant Art</a> accusing the companies of training their text-to-image AI generators on their art without their permission. That same month, Getty Images filed a lawsuit against Stability AI over claims that the company "unlawfully copied and processed millions of images protected by copyright."</p><p>Some publishers have gone the route of negotiating a licensing deal with OpenAI in return for payment. Associated Press, for instance, struck a two-year agreement with OpenAI that <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/openai-chatgpt-associated-press-ap-f86f84c5bcc2f3b98074b38521f5f75a">gives the AI company permission to train ChatGPT on its archive of news stories</a>.</p><p>As for the Authors Guild, writers "must have the ability to control if and how their works are used by generative AI," Authors Guild CEO Mary Rasenberger wrote in a statement.</p><p>"Regurgitated culture is no replacement for human art," Rasenberger said.</p>

"John would be so thrilled. He's looking down, he'd be so thrilled. Thank you so much sir."</p><p>"I said: 'That's okay, don't worry about it.' Maybe he's looking up, I don't know," Trump added. "But let's assume he's looking down."</p><p>Responding to Trump's remarks in a tweet later on, Debbie Dingell said: "Mr. President, let's set politics aside. <ul class="summary-list"><li>California, Colorado, New Mexico, and New York City are telling healthcare providers to offer COVID-19 boosters to all adults.</li><li>The guidance bypasses the <keyword id="11917544" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cdc" source="Orion">CDC</keyword>'s current restrictions on booster shots.</li></ul><p>Any adult who wants a COVID-19 <keyword id="11896085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="booster-shot" source="Orion">booster shot</keyword> at least six months after they're fully vaccinated can get one in three states, plus New York City.</p><p>Dave Chokshi, commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, told healthcare providers on Monday not to deny boosters to New Yorkers ages 18 and up. Public-health officials in California, Colorado, and New Mexico issued similar recommendations in the last month — a decision largely driven by rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in several parts of the US.</p><p>Their guidance bypasses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/should-i-get-covid-booster-shot-cdc-experts-2021-10">current restrictions</a> on booster eligibility.</p><p>The CDC said last month that adults who got their second <keyword id="11897118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pfizer" source="Orion">Pfizer</keyword> or <keyword id="11901412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="moderna" source="Orion">Moderna</keyword> shot at least six months ago should seek a booster if they're 65 years or older, live in a long-term care setting, have an underlying medical condition, or work or live in a high-risk setting, such as a school or hospital. The CDC also recommended boosters for adults who received <keyword id="11898740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="johnson-johnson" source="Orion">Johnson &amp; Johnson</keyword>'s vaccine at least two months ago.</p><p>New Mexico's acting health secretary, David Scrase, said Friday that New Mexico's high transmission rates qualify the entire state as a high-risk setting. New Mexico's daily COVID-19 cases have risen 48%, on average, over the last two weeks — from around 900 to 1,300 infections per day. The number of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 has also risen 29% in that time — from around 400 to 500 people.</p><p>"I strongly encourage every New Mexican to register for a booster today," New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham <a href="https://www.governor.state.nm.us/2021/11/12/state-extends-booster-eligibility-to-all-new-mexico-adults/">said in a Friday press release</a>.</p><p>California's <keyword id="6364896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="public-health" source="Orion">public health</keyword> department similarly directed healthcare providers last week to give boosters to any adult who asks for one. More boosters in arms could help prevent COVID-19 hospitalizations from rising this winter, California Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFvUI4l3Pt4">a news conference</a>.</p><p>"Get that added protection for Thanksgiving gatherings that you may attend. Certainly going into the other winter holidays, it is important," Ghaly said. "What we are seeing is more cases among those who were vaccinated early. We're concerned about what it means for hospitalizations and pressure on our healthcare delivery system, but ultimately for your safety and protection."</p><p>California's state public-health officer, Tomás Aragón, told local healthcare providers that residents could "self-determine their risk of exposure" in <a href="https://eziz.org/assets/docs/COVID19/CDPHBoosterLetter.LHJsandProviders.pdf">a letter</a> on November 9.</p><p>Both California and New Mexico are following Colorado's lead on boosters. Jill Hunsaker Ryan, the Colorado public health department's executive director, <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w4o20hC-v9eGQo0N6fkHHB8a91bpM4z8/view">issued a similar booster recommendation</a> in late October.</p><p>"<keyword id="11896806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine" source="Orion">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword> providers shall, as vaccine supply permits, accept any individual seeking an additional or booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine," Ryan wrote.</p><p>Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed an <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HWuyiwIEC9y8AXzmBJUYBZx3syxZSqj3/view">executive order</a> last week expanding booster eligibility to all adults on the grounds that residents were at high risk of COVID-19 exposure or transmission. The state's daily COVID-19 cases have risen 11%, on average, over the last two weeks — from around 2,900 to 3,200 infections per day. </p><h2>Public-health experts are divided on whether boosters are necessary for all</h2><div type="image" title="booster vaccine" height="3803" width="5500" msid="87675668" hostid="261"></div><p>The CDC's current booster recommendation encompasses tens of millions of Americans, but more than 150 million Americans were fully vaccinated at least six months ago.</p><p><a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2114583">Studies</a> <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.09.30.462488v1">have shown</a> that <keyword id="11893194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus" source="Orion">coronavirus</keyword> antibodies may wane significantly after six months. Antibodies aren't the only form of immunity, though: Vaccines also spur the body to produce T-cells, which help prevent disease. A <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)02183-8/fulltext">study</a> published last month in The Lancet also found that Pfizer's shot was just <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)02183-8/fulltext">47% protective against a coronavirus infection</a> after five months — though the vaccine was still 93% effective against hospitalization for up to six months. </p><p>Still, some public-health experts see boosters as critical to preventing another wave of COVID-19 cases this winter. Already, daily COVID-19 cases are rising in Europe — by 14%, on average, in the last week. Average daily deaths in Europe have also risen 7% in that time.</p><p>"We have a choice as we look into the winter," David O'Connor, a pathology professor at the University of Wisconsin, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-booster-shots-expert-advice-recommendations-2021-10">recently told Insider</a>. "Down one path, we have being reluctant and living with waning immunity, living with cases and the problems that brings with it. Down the other path, we have something that looks more like Israel, where a large fraction of the population is highly protected from being infected in any way with Delta. I don't know why you would choose the first path when the second path is right in front of us."</p><p>Other public-health experts are waiting for more data to decide whether boosters are necessary for everyone.</p><p>The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/11/biden-administration-coronavirus-booster-shots/">reported Thursday</a> that CDC Director Rochelle Walensky is still wary of a general booster recommendation, citing several unnamed officials familiar with the situation. But senior health officials in the Biden administration — including Anthony Fauci and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy — support boosters for all adults, people familiar with those officials' views <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/11/biden-administration-coronavirus-booster-shots/">told The Post</a>. </p><p>Some experts remain concerned that booster shots could increase the risk of myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, among young adults — particularly young men ages 18 to 29. To recommend boosters for this group, CDC officials would need to be confident that the benefits of an additional shot "clearly and definitively outweigh the risk," Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/11/biden-administration-coronavirus-booster-shots/">told The Post</a>.</p><p>For now, he added, "all the evidence" suggests that young men are protected from severe illness if they're fully vaccinated.</p>

Ted Cruz, Rep. Doug Collins, Rep. Paul Gosar, and Trump's own incoming White House chief of staff, Rep. Mark Meadows, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-members-of-congress-self-quarantine-after-cpac-coronavirus-alert-2020-3">all announced they were taking precautions</a> after disovering they had been in close proximity with a coronavirus patient at CPAC in February. None have reported symptoms. (Rep. Louis Gohmert, another ardent Trump supporter, said he was in proximity to the infected individual but refused to enter quarantine.)</p><p>On Tuesday, Trump retweeted a possible sockpuppet account that proclaimed that the "mainstream media" was creating "mass hysteria" with the "sole purpose of politically hurting the President."</p><p> The Twitter account proported to belong to a professor at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico-Arecibo, but no individual with that name appears on the university's faculty list. The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p><p>Trump also <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1237388788776800256">tweeted </a>that "Our CoronaVirus Team has been doing a great job. Even Democrat governors have been VERY complimentary!"</p><p>The day before, Trump had <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1236885723946631173">accused</a> New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, of using the coronavirus for "political weaponization" after Cuomo said the administration was sending "mixed messages" about the coronavirus response. Trump also <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1237027356314869761">attempted to downplay</a> the danger of coronavirus by comparing to deaths from the flu.</p><p>There are a reported 423 cases of the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, in the United States, according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html">Centers for Disease Control.</a> A total of 19 people have died, the CDC reports.</p><p>Trump has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/president-donald-trump-has-not-been-tested-for-new-coronavirus-2020-3">reportedly not been tested for coronavirus,</a> despite coming into contact with two of the quarantined congressmen since their possible exposure. On Friday, he shook hands with Rep. Collins upon arriving in Georgia for a visit to the Centers for Disease Control, and on Monday, he flew on Air Force One with Rep. Gaetz.</p><p>"The President has not received COVID-19 testing because he has neither had prolonged close contact with any known confirmed COVID-19 patients, nor does he have any symptoms," White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham told Reuters. "President Trump remains in excellent health, and his physician will continue to closely monitor him."</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-shook-hands-with-supporters-as-he-downplays-new-coronavirus-2020-3">The president also shook hands with supporters in Florida</a>, despite the CDC's warnings to the public to limit human contact.</p><p>Rep. Gaetz, who learned of the possible contact on Monday while flying with Trump on Air Force One, <a href="https://twitter.com/bterris/status/1237130183116816385">told</a> the Washington Post's Ben Terris that he had isolated himself in a separate section of the plane, but Trump had sought him out anyway and attempted to bring him to the front of the plane.</p><p>"He was not hyper cautious about being in the same space that I was in," Gaetz told <a href="https://twitter.com/bterris/status/1237130183116816385">The Post. </a>"I refused to go into his office, I stood outside the door. "And for him to make such a statement really dishonors the God who made us."</p><p><span>Rep. Michele Lujan Grisham, who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, called Gosar's comments </span><span>"a terrible, negative, dangerous, hateful, political stunt." </span></p><p><span>"I think it's unconstitutional," Lujan Grisham added. "If we're gonna have Jeff Sessions doing anything, we ought to talk about members who are preventing members like me from doing my job. Trump said he canceled the trip because it was "very important" for him to track the storm.</p><p>The next day, the president hit the links at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia. Ron DeSantis on Monday as the state braced for Hurricane Dorian. "Many Pols exercise for hours, or travel for weeks. Me, I run through one of my course (very inexpensive). President Obama would fly to Hawaii."</p><p>Trump added that "Kahn [sic] should focus on ... 'knife crime,' which is totally out of control in London. People are afraid to even walk the streets. He is a terrible mayor who should stay out of our business!"</p><p>Forbes <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckjones/2019/07/10/trumps-golf-trips-could-cost-taxpayers-over-340-million/#708b381b28aa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last month that if Trump continues playing golf at his current pace, the outings could end up costing taxpayers $340 million. "If I were to guess, I think we would do that, that soup-to-nuts gigafactory…that factory would most likely be in North America, but we are investigating other options as well."</span></p>
<p class="p3">Behind the scenes, as Musk uttered those words, there were seven states scrambling to submit proposals to host Tesla's "gigafactory," the ambitious manufacturing facility required to build the batteries in Tesla's electric cars for the foreseeable future.</p>
<p class="p3">According to Fortune's Peter Elkind, who published the <a href="http://fortune.com/inside-elon-musks-billion-dollar-gigafactory/">incredible in-depth story</a> on how Musk manipulated several states into bidding on his massive plant powered completely by renewable energy, Musk lured business recruiters from each state by charming them, inviting them to test drive the Model S, restricting their abilities to take notes during his pitches, and then forcing them to submit their proposals in just three weeks' time.</p>
<p class="p3">Once Tesla received all the proposals from the states - including California, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona - Musk informed the states Tesla would make a business decision in "one to two weeks," but kept them waiting for over a month.</p>
<p class="p3">Keeping the states' officials in the dark was part of Musk's strategy. Joey Grisham, president of an economic development corporation in Texas, says he didn't even know who he was courting; Tesla was only identified as a "publicly traded high tech company."</p>
<p class="p3">But states were aware of the competition between them- and there was even in-state competition. For example, Grisham says he had heard of rumors of Ross Perot Jr. personally pitching a few different sites to Musk. Eventually, Tesla sent "a team of company executives and financial experts" to show a PowerPoint presentation comparing Grisham's proposed area versus "The Competition," keeping that leading prospect unnamed. </p>

<p class="p3">This forced Grisham, and other states, to negotiate with Tesla in the dark.</p>
<p class="p3">"As you can tell, we want you in Hutto!" Grisham wrote to the Tesla team after the presentation. "I believe Tesla fits the Austin region and we will do EVERYTHING in our power to help make that a reality!"</p>
<p class="p3">Other states tried to seduce Tesla: Nevada chartered a 10-passenger Learjet for $10,000, offering to pick up Tesla's team in California and show them around the state. Tesla agreed to the jet, but "an emergency call halted it" as the plane was taxiing toward the runway. Tesla's team took a commercial plane to Nevada, instead.</p>
<p class="p3">After narrowing down the list to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada, Musk upped the ante. Now he didn't just want 90 acres; he wanted 1,000. This forced all the contenders to become super aggressive, offering to provide massive amounts of energy until the gigafactory could run on its own renewable fuels. Even California, which had been eliminated from contention, "begged Tesla to reconsider, promising to come up with a sweet offer and expedite the dreaded environmental reviews."</p>
<p class="p3">Tesla kept asking for more: free land, a 25% electricity discount, and "zero taxes of any sort for 20 years." In the meantime, Musk was bluffing on earnings calls, saying Tesla planned to break ground on "multiple" gigafactory sites. This forced states to redouble their efforts as they believed they were approaching a deal with the company.</p>

With Tesla's money and Nevada's planners, the state summoned "an armada of 200 earthmovers and graders" to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on the thousand-acre site, displacing more than 3 million cubic yards of dirt in the process. It even had drones flying overhead to take photos and video showing how the project was progressing. State officials later called it a "biblical" show of force.</p>
<p class="p3">But just as Nevada was about to close the deal, Musk once again upped his demands. He asked for $500 million in cash, instead of some of the tax breaks for electricity. It's unclear why he changed his mind, but it may have had to do with a deal struck days prior, when the state of Tennessee announced it would give $230 million to Volkswagen to help it build a $600 million plant in Chattanooga. But Nevada, with a budget of $6.5 billion, put everything on halt, sending its 240 construction workers home, and walking away from the deal.</p>
<p class="p3">In the ensuing earnings call in July, Musk told analysts it had indeed broken ground in Nevada, but said "the ball is in the court of the governor and the state legislature."</p>
<p class="p3">Other states kept pitching Tesla in the meantime: Texas Gov. Rick Perry drove a Tesla up to Sacramento to show he was serious about fighting for the factory; the mayor of Tuscon, Ariz., sent a building permit "good for a $3 billion, 5-million-square-foot building at an Arizona address 'to be determined.'"<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p3">But even as the posturing ensued, and Nevada became unsure of its position, Tesla couldn't find any other takers at the $500 million in cash asking price, so it finalized the deal. Tesla would get 980 acres, which were level thanks to the previous groundbreaking effort. The state would pay to extend US Route 50, a major highway, to reach the four-lane road leading to the industrial park, and Tesla would receive $1.1 billion in abatements, including 20 years without having to pay a sales tax on equipment and construction materials, 10 years without property taxes, and a 10-year break on payroll taxes. And it would also receive $8 million in electricity discounts.</p>
<p class="p3">In return, Tesla agreed to give $37.5 million to local public schools in Nevada starting in 2018, donate $1 million to battery research at the University of Nevada, and wait for its subsidies to kick in only after the company reached its targets for job creation and investment. </p>
<p class="p3">With all of those subsidies and abatements - as well as a final $195 million in transferable tax credits and the $113 million in highway funds - Nevada's total tally for landing Tesla was a whopping $1.4 billion.</p>
<p class="p3">The deal was done in August, but other states didn't know Tesla had made its choice until Labor Day.</p>

How Elon Musk Cleverly Manipulated 7 States To Compete For Tesla's Huge Factory

<p dir="ltr">"Remember 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,' when they're on the cliff and getting ready to jump and one guy says, 'I can't swim?'" asks the folksy 72-year old, referring to the classic Robert Redford-Paul Newman film. "And the other guy says, 'What are you worried about? The fall's going to kill you.'"</p>
<p dir="ltr">That was essentially the situation White found himself in, watching helplessly as EDC's revenues were steadily eaten away by competition from world's most successful - and most aggressive - online retailer. "We were selling more to Amazon but our business kept declining," he says, describing a dip of some 40% in one division alone. "I'm thinking, 'What can I do here? This is crazy.' You had to fix it, or you're going to die anyway."</p>

Distributors who resell books to Amazon, including Ingram and Baker &amp; Taylor, also soon found their supplies of books like "<a href="http://shop.edcpub.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=108981">The Gas We Pass</a>" and "<a href="http://shop.edcpub.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=112085">Sticker Dolly Dressing Dream Jobs</a>" cut off. For good measure, EDC also ditched other big-box discount stores, including Sam's Club, Costco and Target.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In a turn of events that might offer some solace to other publishers, White recently announed that EDC has not only survived the leap into the unknown but just had its best year ever in net revenues. July sales were up 28% over the same month last year, and first quarter revenues came in 20% higher than 2013's numbers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This isn't to say there weren't some nervous moments around EDC's Tulsa offices. Indeed, White's audacious move meant forgoing $2 million in annual sales in one go. "That caused a little pucker in my drawstring, so to speak," he admits. "It was a gut-wrencing decision. Most people thought I was crazy."</p>
<p dir="ltr">One concerned observer was Peter Usborne, founder and CEO of Usborne Books, the U.K.-based publisher of children's books, for which EDC has long held U.S. distribution rights (EDC also owns the small California publisher Kane/Miller). "We weren't involved in the decision," says Usborne, who continues to do business with Amazon in the UK and elsewhere. "Randall just told me he'd done it. He quite likes a fight, and I think he was looking down the wrong end of a shotgun. It looked pretty grim for awhile, but now it seems he's the wind in his sails."</p>
<p dir="ltr">EDC's stockholders also initially found the decision alarming. "They weren't happy," White says. Shares had already drifted down from a high of around $12 to something like $2.50. "Fortunately, I own enough that I don't get fired," he notes with a laugh. "When someone complains about the price and they own 1,000 shares, I say, 'Well, I got 800,000. I feel your pain, brother!'"</p>

<p dir="ltr">The success of EDC is a rare piece of good news for book publishers, who have spent most of the last two decades watching helplessly as the Seattle-based behemoth relentlessly came to dominate the industry. Although Amazon now sells more books than every other outlet combined, the entire division represents just 7% of the company's annual revenue, according to <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/02/17/cheap-words">an educated guess</a> by The New Yorker. In his 2013 book "The Everything Store," Brad Stone reports that Amazon's aggressive attempts to squeeze small companies like EDC for better terms came to be known internally as "<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=t95iRvivDHIC&amp;dq=brad+stone+the+everything+store&amp;source=gbs_navlinks_s">The Gazelle Project</a>," after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos suggested his team negotiate with publishers the way a cheetah might negotiate with a vulnerable gazelle.  </p>
<p dir="ltr">At the moment, Amazon is locked in a hard-fought battle with the French-owned Hachette, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/25/business/international/amazon-accused-in-Germany-of-antitrust-violation.html">among others</a>, over the pricing of digital books. Its hardball tactics have included delaying shipments of some print books, shutting down pre-orders, and removing Hachette's titles from its recommendation algorithms. As a sign of how critical the issue is for both sides, 900 writers, including Stephen King, Nora Roberts, and John Grisham, recently published a <a href="http://authorsunited.net/">letter</a> in the New York Times complaining about Amazon's policies, prompting the characteristically tight-lipped tech company to publish its own <a href="http://readersunited.com/">open letter</a> to book buyers, explaining how its goal of making e-books less expensive would mean more sales, benefitting readers, publishers and writers.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Rallying the Mom &amp; Pops</h2>
<p dir="ltr">In the office of Mary Arnold Toys, a beloved local toystore on Manhattan's Upper East Side, Ezra Ishayik says he was thrilled by White's decision to dump Amazon.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"It's an admirable position to take," Ishayik declares. "Fight the beast!"</p>

What they don't offer, Ezra's daughter Judy points out, is the old-fashioned experience of shopping in a favorite store.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The fact that EDC's books can no longer be purchased on Amazon makes coming into the toy shop even more special, she says. And sales have increased as a result. While the company used to place orders with EDC every two months, it now replenishes the stock every three weeks.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The enthusiastic response of stores like Mary Arnold was critical to EDC's survival. "They were ecstatic," White recalls. "They called, they blogged, they rallied. We made up that $2 million loss that first year, and this year set a record."</p>
<p dir="ltr">Ezra, 75, who immigrated to the U.S. from Iraq in 1965, has spent decades as a neighborhood shopkeeper in New York. He's not optimistic about the future of small local businesses. "I tell you something: retail in 5, 7 years is a disnosaur," he says. "There will be Amazon, and that's it. Either you fight today, or you're gone. That's what Bezos is aiming at - he wants to put everyone out of busin<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ess. And when all the stores are closed in your neighborhood, you will see him raising prices."</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<h2 dir="ltr">An Army Of Home Sellers</h2>
<p dir="ltr">EDC has a few advantages that publishers like Hachette don't. For one, the company does not acquire titles or deal with writers - except indirectly through Kane/Miller, the publisher it acquired in 2008. As a result, it does not have to fear a wholesale defection of worried authors to rival publishers the way Hachette does.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Its publishing division sells not only to bookstores but also to museum shops and toystores like Mary Arnold, which cater to kids - a demographic that is at once less price-sensitive (they're not spending their own money) and considably more impatient.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Perhaps most important, EDC has Nancy Ann Wartman, a mother of five living in Taylor Mill, Kentucky. Wartman is a stalwart of the distributor's home business division, known as Usborne Books &amp; More (UBM), an army of some 7,000 sales "consultants" who sell Usborne and Kane/Miller books directly to their friends and neighbors, mostly through book fairs and Tupperware-style home parties (a root-beer float night is one surefire winner).</p>

Wartman signed on 20 years ago with a goal of providing books for her own children and maybe springing for pizza a few times a month. Gradually, she rose through the ranks, from team leader to senior team leader, executive leader to senior executive leader. She is now one of a handful of directors, with a salesforce of a few thousand in her "downline" - all passionately devoted to EDC and its titles. In a good year, she pulls in a six-figure income, she says, money she and her husband credit with helping them adopt their daughter Adelie, a special needs child from China. (Unlike some MLMs, such as Herbalife, which have drawn criticism for profiting from recruits who never actually manage to sell any goods, "Nobody at EDC gets paid until someone sells a book," White says.)</p>
<p dir="ltr">EDC's home reps were among the most enthusiastic about the decision to ditch Amazon, which they considered unfair competition. Many had been burned by spending an afternoon talking up various titles to a school librarian or teacher, for instance, only to have the would-be customer make the order on Amazon to save a few dollars.</p>
<p dir="ltr">After a few such experiences, many of the "ladies," as White likes to call them, were beginning to lose heart. A number dropped out of the program. Since White stopped doing business with Amazon, however, the division has reversed nine years of decline, posting 13 consecutive months of growth. Recruitment is up.  <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Is EDC Unique?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Whether Hachette and other publishers can duplicate EDC's success is by no means certain. Creating their own MLM divisions would seem to be out of the question (it's hard to picture buying the latest Malcolm Gladwell over root-beer floats), though experiments with select imprints might be worth a try. The more important lesson may be to align themselves more aggressively the few <span>local bookstores that</span> still remain in business - probably the only entities more threatened by Amazon than publishers are. A strong alliance accompanied by a noisy publicity push might at least put them in a more advantageous negotiating position the next time Amazon comes around looking for better terms.</p>

"I've been around a long time, and I can tell you, you better be careful before you hand your business over to someone else," he says. "A few years ago, one publisher told me, 'You know, we love Amazon.' And I said, 'You're going to rue the day you said that. Amazon is not your friend.' And now, they're back at him, just like with Hachette, wanting a bigger piece. They're not making any money, so they want to take it out of the suppliers."</p>
<p dir="ltr">Looking back, he says, going his own way was probably his only real option.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"It was like when you finally know you have a deadly disease and you have to have major surgery," White says. "Since we made the decision, it's been nothing but healing and improving."</p>
