The changes led to the company's shares falling by over 25%.It's a low point for a company whose cofounder, Gordon Moore, revolutionized the computing field through industry-defining observations, now formulated in Moore's Law.However, Gelsinger seems ready to ensure the 56-year-old company can revive its fortunes.<h2 id="5629db68-f1a7-41c6-9e1b-69ca67314e50">Intel prepares to mount a comeback</h2><div type="image" title="Intel" height="1334" width="2000" msid="113433000" hostid="261" sizebytes="83338"></div>After months of seeing Intel's shares tumble, Gelsinger on Monday addressed the elephant in the room by announcing the "next phase of Intel's transformation.""There has been no shortage of rumors and speculation about the company, including last week's board of directors meeting, so I'm writing today to provide some updates and outline what comes next," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.intc.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1710/a-message-from-intel-ceo-pat-gelsinger-to-employees">Gelsinger wrote in a letter to employees.</a>One of the headline updates he shared was that Intel is expanding its collaboration with Amazon Web Services through a "multi-year, multibillion-dollar framework" that would see the two companies <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/intel-to-make-custom-ai-chip-for-amazon-web-services-1033775651">work together on custom chip designs.</a>Specifically, Intel Foundry, the division responsible for manufacturing chips instead of designing them, would produce the chip through a new process called Intel 18A that the company has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/newsroom/news/intel-foundry-achieves-major-milestones.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20are%20pioneering%20multiple%20systems,18A%20to%20market%20in%202025.%E2%80%9D">preparing to roll out in 2025</a>.For Patrick Moorhead, founder and chief analyst at advisory firm Moor Insights &amp; Strategy, the development is a step in the right direction. <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/PatrickMoorhead/status/1835772073060553147">Moorhead wrote on X</a> that the Amazon news "can only be looked at as a positive," as it gives Intel "a strategic deal it didn't have before."Meanwhile, Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester, told Business Insider that this is a big public win for Intel. "Producing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-is-paying-off-for-some-major-cloud-providers-2024-5">chips for a hyperscaler</a> utilising their top processes provides publicity, a revenue stream, and validation of their foundry business," he said.Gelsinger's second headline announcement was that the company is establishing Intel Foundry as a separate subsidiary within Intel, with its own new operating board and independent directors. It's a move that aims to bring about a key financial benefit."Importantly, it also gives us future flexibility to evaluate independent sources of funding and optimize the capital structure of each business to maximize growth and shareholder value creation," he said.The final headline announcement was that the company was set to "pause" on projects to build new plants in Poland and Germany for around two years in a bid to become more capital-efficient.Critically, Gelsinger told employees that "there are no changes" to Intel's other manufacturing locations as it remains committed to manufacturing investments across locations in the US, such as Arizona, Oregon, New Mexico, and Ohio.For now, investors seem to have taken the shake-up positively. Intel's share price was up over 6% in pre-market trading on Tuesday.Forrester's Nguyen said the announcements go "a long way to improving their outlook.". However, he added that challenges remain, "especially with their workforce reduction and concerns about the AI market."One of the company's biggest problems has been its struggle to capitalize on the generative AI boom. According to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/artificial-intelligence/how-chip-giant-intel-spurned-openai-fell-behind-times-2024-08-07/">Reuters report</a> last month, the company passed over an opportunity to invest in ChatGPT maker OpenAI seven years ago. That set it well behind rivals once large language models finally arrived in a big way just a few years later.Analysts have also noted positive aspects of Gelsinger's turnaround plan. A research note from Bernstein, published on Tuesday, said, "the moves suggest Intel is not as desperate for cash as some have feared."However, the research firm's note added that "nothing announced was really incremental, or changes the current situation."Perhaps Gelsinger isn't being paranoid enough.

The S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices said on November 1 that Intel is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-struggles-qualcomm-deal-chip-industry-turmoil-2024-9">losing its 25-year spot</a> to Nvidia in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-replace-intel-dow-jones-industrial-average-2024-11">Dow Jones Industrial Average</a>. Intel's stock has dropped nearly 50% so far this year, and the company has faced billions in losses. It's also had sweeping layoffs, buyouts, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-layoffs-cost-cutting-measures-pay-cuts-reduced-perks-2024-10">other setbacks.</a>The many moving parts of Intel's strategy could still help it recover from its recent setbacks if they're executed well. Business Insider spoke with industry analysts to ask what should go right for Intel to get back on track.Intel has specifically lagged in the age of generative AI compared to competitors like Nvidia, Qualcomm, and AMD, which have their chips produced by Taiwan-based chip giant <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsmc-power-players-14-execs-leading-worlds-biggest-chipmaker-2024-9">TSMC</a>.BI's Alistair Barr <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-qualcomm-odd-couple-wont-solve-us-chipmaking-woes-2024-9">previously wrote</a> that since Intel is the only company manufacturing high-powered chips on American soil at scale, rather than outsourcing the job to Taiwan, the company is a key part of the bedrock of the country's technology ecosystem."Chips power the modern economy," he wrote. "If you have to get these components overseas, you're vulnerable."Given lawmakers' keen geopolitical and economic interests in maintaining the US's technological advantage, that means weighing all possible outcomes for Intel's future as the company struggles to gain its footing in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-china-new-technology-race-air-force-secretary-2024-10">AI race</a>."What's going on in Intel is not good, and being removed from the Dow is just sort of the cherry on the sundae," said Stacy Rasgon, a senior analyst at Bernstein Research.<h2 id="82763c21-cb66-4baf-9c2f-d09417cdc772">What needs to go right: 18A</h2>Intel's 18A process technology is key to its strategy and its next shot at a new process node <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-roadmap-leadership-tsmc-samsung-analyst-skepticism-2025-2021-7">after struggling</a> with previous node upgrades. If the technology succeeds, Intel can win over customers and turn itself around.Intel has executed five improved chip nodes in the last four years, resulting in smaller and more powerful transistors, "which is a feat in itself," said Patrick Moorhead, CEO and chief analyst of Moor Insights and Strategy. Still, in recent years, Intel has failed to keep up with TSMC in the latest chip nodes.Moorhead added that Intel is investing to "catch up" to its competitors."Its 18A node appears to be healthy and competitive, which is the key to its turnaround and the ability to recruit more foundry customers," Moorhead said.Intel has announced Amazon as an 18A customer so far."You have to trust Intel to manufacture your chips on advanced processes, which they've just started adopting, efficiently and on time which they haven't done yet," said Logan Purk, a senior analyst at Edward Jones.<h2 id="053cf5c5-cc4a-47d6-b22d-74bd1e17888b">Intel needs to balance the books</h2>Intel plans to spin out its semiconductor manufacturing business into an independent subsidiary called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-ceo-pat-gelsinger-turnaround-plan-aws-2024-9">Intel Foundry</a>, separating the manufacturing process from its chip-design business. For this to work, the foundry business will need other major companies, including its rivals, to use Intel to manufacture their chip designs in large volumes. This hasn't happened yet.Other chip companies that have separated their manufacturing and designing have succeeded, said Dan Morgan, a senior trust portfolio manager at Synovus. He pointed to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-amd-nvidia-chip-manufacturing-moores-law-fabless-2020-11">AMD spinning off</a> its manufacturing arm GlobalFoundries as an example, and he estimated that Intel's foundry business alone could be valued as high as $80 billion. Highlighting Intel's challenge here, GlobalFoundries only has a market cap of just $24 billion as of publication time.Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has also said that Intel is making progress in cutting costs in their recent staff reductions and real estate sales."Balance sheet is an area of focus for investors given the company's aggressive capex plan and ongoing losses in the foundry business," Morgan said.Rasgon said Intel is facing a "dire emergency" but likely isn't so desperate as to declare bankruptcy or sell off portions of its business at a fire sale price. Moreover, Intel still <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/intel-battles-amd-with-new-data-center-chips-2024-06-04">holds over 75%</a> of the market share of data center chips and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/amds-desktop-pc-market-share-skyrockets-amid-intels-raptor-lake-crashing-scandal-amd-makes-biggest-leap-in-recent-history">PCs</a>."It's not like the company's just bleeding out," Daniel Newman, CEO of the technology research and advisory firm Futurum Group, told BI.<h2 id="e50e85c0-01ba-4d89-a096-040aaf9c7576">A rescue plan from Washington, DC</h2>Washington's concerns about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-nvidia-replacing-intel-dow-jones-industrial-average-explained-2024-11">Intel</a> have become a sharper focus as the company has continued to slip from its spot as a top chipmaker.Intel is set to receive billions from the federal government under the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-chips-act-funding-all-hands-meeting-2024-11">CHIPS and Science Act</a> to boost American semiconductor manufacturing — though the company hasn't received any funds yet.If Intel can contain costs and efficiently apply its grant funding, Newman said, "there is a possibility that it could get back to a level of profitability that would make it sustainable."The government has taken other steps to boost Intel. Gina Raimondo, the US secretary of commerce, took multiple private meetings and calls to urge chief executives from Google, Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, and other firms to buy chips from Intel to shore up the company's manufacturing wing and solidify its role in US-based chip production," <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/24/us/politics/intel-chips-biden.html">The New York Times</a> reported last month.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-second-trump-term-means-for-intel-2024-11">Under Donald Trump's</a> presidential administration, Intel could receive support for domestic manufacturing while facing higher tariffs and pushback on the <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-chips-act-funding-all-hands-meeting-2024-11">CHIPS Act</a>."Under the incoming administration, which arguably has an even greater nationalist tone, homegrown companies actually stand to benefit," said Purk.Not everyone is convinced that government intervention will help Intel get back on track in chip manufacturing."It's all fine and dandy for the government to say, 'Yeah, we want you to use Intel,'" Rasgon said. "Like, that's great, but it's not going to happen unless Intel can deliver."<h2 id="97a3535f-a9d2-4efc-9d1f-18b25dba6859">Intel could face a breakup or a merger if things go wrong</h2>Intel's foundry business has been slow to take off, and the potential for it to reinvigorate the American chipmaking landscape hasn't stopped rumblings about a possible breakup — with competitors like Qualcomm reportedly interested in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qualcomm-intel-acquisition-chips-semiconductors-tsmc-2024-9">buying parts of Intel</a> — or policymakers in Washington discussing potential contingency plans.Officials from the Commerce Department and Sen. Mark Warner, who championed the CHIPS Act, met for precautionary strategy talks to discuss how the government should support Intel if it needs more help, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/01/2024/concerns-grow-in-washington-over-intel">Semafor reported</a>. The report said they also discussed a potential merger between the company's chip design business and a competitor like AMD or Marvell."If, for some reason, this foundry thing continues to take longer, the losses continue to mount, the technological progress does not take hold, sales falter, or the company's ability to stay together does, I do believe that they are setting it up in that direction to be able to have options — whether they spin it off and take it public separately, or bring private equity into it, or they're able to bring a buyer to the table," Newman said.Intel, the Commerce Department, and a representative for Warner did not respond to requests for comment from BI.

What needs to go right for Intel, and what happens if it doesn't

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One of Silicon Valley's most storied companies has just become an acquisition target.</li><li>Intel, which is struggling, has been approached by Qualcomm over a potential takeover, according to reports.</li></ul>If Qualcomm sees it through, its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-qualcomm-takeover-bid-layoffs-foundry-spin-off-2024-9?">takeover bid of Intel</a> would likely be the biggest in Silicon Valley history. While it has good reasons to go after the storied chip giant, a lot is working against it.The possibility of Intel handing its 56-year history over to a younger rival emerged last week after several reports said that California-based semiconductor firm Qualcomm had made a takeover approach.Qualcomm is no newbie in Silicon Valley. It was founded 39 years ago, in 1985. Since then, it has grown into a company worth over $188 billion, specializing in everything from wireless networks to smartphone processors and modems.But recent trouble brewing at Intel, a longtime chip designer and manufacturer, has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-qualcomm-odd-couple-wont-solve-us-chipmaking-woes-2024-9?utm_source=Iterable&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=campaign_">apparently given Qualcomm reason to consider acquiring a company</a> that has lost more than half its value this year and dropped to a market capitalization of just over $93 billion.While some of its top competitors, like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-q2-earnings-ai-investors-expectations-2024-8">Nvidia</a>, have soared to new heights as a result of the generative AI boom, Intel has struggled to capitalize on investor interest in the technology. It has also grappled with production and strategy challenges.The company took a serious tumble in August — a month in which it lost almost $30 billion in market value — after announcing layoffs affecting 15,000 employees and a suspension of its dividend from the fourth quarter of this year.It's worth noting that Qualcomm's talks to takeover this troubled business are very early-stage and exploratory in nature. A person close to Qualcomm told the Financial Times that the company "would only pursue a friendly deal."<h2 id="5c875e1e-a5bc-430a-9b8e-8cc51e56a195">Intel presents Qualcomm with pros and cons</h2><div type="image" title="Pat Gelsinger" height="850" width="1520" msid="113607064" hostid="261" sizebytes="23124"></div>For some, the logic to pursue the deal here is apparent.<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/CNBCOvertime/status/1837225599057695027">Speaking on CNBC</a> last week, industry analyst Patrick Moorhead said Intel's exposure to key areas like data centers, the PC market, and chip manufacturing capabilities — which Qualcomm lacks as it outsources that process to Taiwan's TSMC — means there are "synergies in this."The company has also taken steps that seem to make it a more attractive purchase. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-ceo-pat-gelsinger-turnaround-plan-aws-2024-9">Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger also announced a set of drastic measures</a> to bring change to the company last week that could set it on a brighter path.These measures included a "multi-year, multibillion-dollar" deal to work on custom chip designs with tech heavyweight Amazon Web Services, pauses on plans to build plants in Europe, and separating its manufacturing unit, Intel Foundry, into its own entity.That said, not everyone is convinced that Qualcomm needs Intel — or that a buyout would be a good idea for either company.Richard Windsor, an equity research analyst and founder of Radio Free Mobile, thinks that while <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qualcomm-intel-acquisition-chips-semiconductors-tsmc-2024-9">"it is possible to see how Qualcomm and Intel could fit together"</a> — one company designs chips and the other has factories — lots of Intel's bits won't fit so well."The vultures are hovering around Intel and while Intel will make a tasty and nutritious meal for some, I think Intel would end up sticking in Qualcomm's crop and give it a bad case of indigestion," he wrote in a note on Monday.He points to a few key reasons.Intel's x86 processors lag behind Qualcomm's and rival firm Arm's offerings. Redesigning chips to be made by Intel "sounds like a risky proposition," he said, given Qualcomm's "already established excellent relationships" with manufacturers like TSMC.Ming-Chi Kuo, a Taiwan-based market analyst at financial services firm TF International Securities, went a step further, claiming <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://medium.com/@mingchikuo/my-industry-survey-also-indicates-that-qualcomm-is-currently-in-takeover-talks-with-intel-12fb5b7cf0e3">a takeover of Intel could be "disastrous" for Qualcomm</a> in a post over the weekend. His rationale was that Qualcomm's "most critical focus should be on establishing competitiveness in AI chips" for segments like smartphones, but he doesn't see an acquisition of Intel helping.It could boost its position in the market for AI PCs, but the analyst thinks Qualcomm already has a strong position here, as its processors are being used in Microsoft's Windows on Arm platform — a version of Windows running on Arm technology that Microsoft is committed to."While the acquisition of Intel could rapidly increase Qualcomm's PC market share, it comes at a significant cost," he wrote. "Qualcomm can grow in the AI PC market even without the acquisition."It's also unclear how Qualcomm would find the cash to buy Intel. The company's cash on hand is $13 billion, but even adding in free cash flow, it still falls far short of Intel's current price.The impact on competition would likely spark alarm among regulators, too. A Qualcomm bid for Intel could face similar regulatory obstacles to the takeover attempt Nvidia made for Arm in 2020 and <a target="_blank" href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-and-softbank-group-announce-termination-of-nvidias-acquisition-of-arm-limited">later abandoned in 2022.</a>Intel will, of course, want to consider its options. He added, "The mix of emotions I felt: anger, confusion, and that sinking feeling of failure was overwhelming. I called my wife, and she asked me to drive straight home. Instead of lashing out or drowning in self-pity, my wife and I sat down and talked and wrote down our choices. Acceptance didn't come easy, but it was the first step." He then mentioned how he went on a relentless job hunt after this experience and eventually started working at a new place. The ex-Microsoft employee also added that now when he looks back at the time when he was fired, it looks like that was a turning point in his life and forced him to confront fears, re-evaluate goals, and find a path that was "more aligned with his true likes." He then addressed people who are going through similar situations and reminded them that they are not alone. <h2>Layoffs in the tech world</h2>The tech industry has been seeing a rise in the number of layoffs since 2022. Major IT giants like <keyword id="19895622" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Microsoft" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword>, Meta, Amazon, Google, X (earlier Twitter) collectively laid off millions of employees across the world. People often share their experiences on LinkedIn, in hopes of either finding a better role or connecting with other like-minded people. Earlier today, Intel was making headlines for announcing a fresh round of layoffs. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Intel recently announced mass layoffs of 15,000 jobs amid losses in Q2.</li><li>Shareholders are claiming in a lawsuit that Intel didn't do enough to warn investors.</li></ul>A Missouri-based pension fund is accusing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/intel">Intel</a>, in a class action lawsuit, of hiding problems about its in-house chips manufacturing business ahead of the company's reported net loss and mass layoff of 15,000 jobs.Intel on August 1 announced a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/intel-stock-price-layoffs-weak-guidance-missed-analyst-estimates-semiconductors-2024-8">15% reduction of its workforce</a> after reporting a net loss of $1.6 billion for the second quarter.The Silicon Valley company, which once led the chips industry, has struggled to catch up with its rivals, mainly Nvidia, a longtime competitor that now has a stranglehold on the GPU business amid the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-playing-catch-up-ai-race-chatgpt-chips-2023-10">AI race</a>.A lawsuit filed in a San Francisco federal court on Wednesday, naming CEO Patrick Gelsinger and CFO David Zinsner as co-defendants, claimed that Intel hid problems about its in-house chips manufacturing business that led to the dismal second-quarter earnings result. The lead plaintiff of the lawsuit is the Construction Laborers Pension Trust of Greater St. Louis, filed on behalf of other Intel investors.Unlike many of its rivals, Intel designs and manufactures chips through its foundry factories. The decision helped Intel tentatively win a $8.5 billion federal grant through the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chips-act-bill-to-boost-us-chipmaking-competition-with-china-2022-7">CHIPS Act</a>.According to the lawsuit, the company told investors that this in-house model will allow Intel to save "$8 to $10 billion exiting 2025."But the move turned out to be much more costly than investors anticipated, the complaint said."Unbeknownst to investors, however, Intel's foundry business was floundering, costing billions of dollars more than investors had been led to believe even while revenue growth in the division actually declined during the Class Period," the lawsuit said, referring to the period from January 25 to August 1, 2024.The lawsuit accused Intel, along with its CEO and CFO, of making false and misleading statements that "artificially inflated" the company's stock price.A spokesperson for Intel declined to comment.Shareholders in the lawsuit highlighted statements from defendants that they say showed the "purported success" of the company's business units, including the foundry model.One statement came from a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.intc.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1672/intel-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2023-financial">January 2024 press release</a> from Zinsner, who said: "We continued to drive operational efficiencies in the fourth quarter, and comfortably achieved our commitment to deliver $3 billion in cost savings in 2023. We expect to unlock further efficiencies in 2024 and beyond as we implement our new internal foundry model, which is designed to drive greater transparency and accountability and higher returns on our owners' capital."Shareholders alleged in the lawsuit that these were "materially false and misleading" statements that failed to disclose that "Intel's foundry business was suffering from ballooning costs and required substantially more capital expenditures than investors had been led to believe and, as a result, had suffered $7 billion in losses in 2023."James Park, a securities regulation expert at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Business Insider email that the lawsuit contained a fairly "standard set of allegations." "Intel will probably argue that the claim there would be cost savings was a forward-looking statement," he said, which is protected by the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act's safe harbor provision.

The Latest On Microsoft's CEO Hunt: Alan Mulally Is Fading, And There's A New Candidate In The Running

In fact, nearly half of all iPads are bought by corporations and governments, according to a Forrester estimate included in a feature about <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/08/technology/once-taunted-by-steve-jobs-companies-are-now-big-customers-of-apple.html?_r=0">Apple's enterprise strength</a>. Since teaming up with IBM in 2014 to sell iPhones and iPads to big Fortune 500 companies, Apple's products have become the "preferred mobile computing devices for corporations," <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/08/technology/once-taunted-by-steve-jobs-companies-are-now-big-customers-of-apple.html?_r=0">reports the Times</a>.Companies like British Airways deploy as many as 40 custom iPad apps for flight attendants, pilots, and airline workers. These apps allow the airline to, say, rebook a passenger or check a passenger manifest. British Airways has already bought 17,000 iPads for its workers and is looking to buy more. Many <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> apps are developed by IBM, which has created 100 enterprise apps for over 2000 companies, and now generates more than half a billion dollars from Apple-related services. IBM has made apps for insurance companies, retailers, and other specific industries.One of the reasons why businesses have decided to embrace iPhones and iPads is that Apple's security is superior to Android's, thanks to the way Apple controls both the hardware and software. It's quite a turnaround for Apple, which is seeking new sources of revenue as sales have dropped on an annual basis for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-q3-2016-earnings-2016-7">the past two quarters</a>.Apple's always sold computers to businesses, but while CEO Steve Jobs was in charge from 1998 to 2011, the company was significantly more focused on consumers.Aside from the famous photo of Jobs flipping off the IBM logo, there's one fun anecdote that hammers the change home. Back in 2008, Jobs called chief information officers, the people who buy computers for big businesses, "orifices," according to a story <a href="http://www.computerdealernews.com/news/byod-and-the-time-steve-jobs-compared-cios-to-an-orifice/32856">told by VMWare CEO Patrick Gelsinger</a>:"I went with (former Intel CEO Paul) Otellini to meet with Jobs and his lieutenants. One of Apple's biggest weaknesses is becoming a strength

Now <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-12/microsoft-said-to-consider-qualcomm-s-mollenkopf-for-ceo-job.html">Bloomberg is reporting</a> that the dark horse is <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword> COO Steve Mollenkopf.
Mollenkopf is the No. 2 guy at Qualcomm, which makes chips for mobile devices. During Microsoft's recent analyst day, Ballmer named Qualcomm, along with Apple and Samsung, as examples of companies that successfully shifted to take advantage of mobile computing, the Bloomberg article notes.
Ballmer is heavily involved with picking a successor and he's set Microsoft firmly on the path of building its own mobile devices. He will want the next CEO to continue down that path, a former Microsoft headhunter <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/headhunter-elop-will-be-microsoft-ceo-2013-12">told Business Insider.</a>
Ford CEO Alan Mulally was considered to be the frontrunner to get the job. But word was that Mulally wasn't a good fit because he didn't know enough about the tech business to run such a complicated company, with products ranging from consumer gadgets to software development tools. Then Ford's board starting publicly saying that Mulally intended to stick around at Ford.
Pundits have been tossing out lots of other names as candidates: Stephen Elop, former CEO of Nokia who joined Microsoft again when Microsoft acquired Nokia's device business; various internal Microsoft executives; and Patrick Gelsinger, CEO of VMWare. But Mollenkopf is a surprising new name to consider.
