On May 19, 2023, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes from circulation. "The total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2000 banknotes was announced, has declined to Rs 8,470 crore at the close of business on February 29, 2024," the RBI said in a statement. Thus, 97.62 per cent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have since been returned, it added. "The Rs 2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender," the RBI added. People can deposit and/or exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes at the 19 RBI offices across the country. Starting October 8, 2023, individuals have been provided with the choice of either exchanging the currency or having the equivalent sum credited to their bank accounts at the 19 offices of the RBI. The July 2020 round of the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households has been launched, the central bank said in a release on Tuesday. Hansa Research Group, Mumbai has been engaged to conduct the survey of this round on behalf of the RBI over telephone instead of the regular personal interview mode in view of the pandemic. "For this purpose, the selected households will be approached by the agency and they are requested to provide their response over telephone," the release said. The survey aims at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, of approximately 6,000 households, based on their individual consumption baskets, across 18 cities. In the wake of the pandemic, the government released truncated retail inflation data for April and May. The RBI would also conduct July 2020 round of Consumer Confidence Survey (CCS) to seek qualitative responses from households, regarding their sentiments on general economic situation, employment scenario, price level, households' income and spending. The survey, which would also be done over telephone, would cover approximately 5,400 respondents across 13 cities. These cities are Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mumbai, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad, New Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Chennai, Surat, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Prayag Raj, Kanpur, Noida, Greater Noida, Visakhapatnam, Indore, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Ludhiana, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Ernakulam. Last month, Google Pay launched a 'Nearby Spot' to helps users see which stores, providing essential goods, are open in their vicinity. Merchant establishments can now indicate their business hours, whether social distancing measures are in place at the store and the essential goods presently in stock. Users across the country can also book their cooking gas cylinders from HP Gas, Bharat Petroleum or Indane, and pay digitally via the app. "All three service providers are now live for all users of Google Pay," the company said in a statement. The company has also launched a 'Coronavirus Spot' which provides users official safety guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and also links to a variety of charities accepting donations to support relief work.

They will be made available in two equal lots of 10,000 each. One lot will be immediately supplied to Hyderabad, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra while the other lot will be supplied to Kolkata, Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Vijayawada, Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram and Goa within a week to meet the emergency requirements, the company said. Generic COVID-19 drug priced at ₹5,400 per vial by Hyderabad-based Hetero

New Delhi, Dec 10 () For the second week in a row, onion prices on Tuesday stayed above the Rs 100 per kg mark, as government efforts to cool the rates seem to be taking more time than expected.
 The rates were as high as Rs 165 a kg in Panaji, while the average of 114 major cities in the country came to over Rs 100, according to official data available here.
 Onion prices started to climb from September and have averaged over Rs 100 per kg since November 25.
 Onion, which is an essential ingredient in many food preparations, is a politically sensitive item and its high prices have been a cause of defeat for many governments in the past.
 According to the data, onion prices are ruling at Rs 96 per kg in the national capital, Rs 102 per kg in Mumbai, Rs 100 in Chennai and Rs 140 per kg in Kolkata.
 Onions are being sold at Rs 160 per kg in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Mayabunder, and at Rs 150 per kg in Tirupati, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad.
 In Bengaluru, Wayanad, Ramanathapuram and Port Blair, the rates stood at Rs 140 per kg.
 Onion prices prevailed at Rs 120 per kg in Gurugram, Jagdalpur, Behrampur, Purulia, Maldah, Itanagar, Agartala, Puducherry, Dindigul, Tirunelveli and Dharmapuri.
 In Amritsar, Surat, Jabalpur, Darbhanga, Sambalpur, Balasore and Gangtok, onion prices were Rs 110 per kg.
 Onion rates are Rs 100 per kg in Chandigarh, Shimla, Mandi, Srinagar, Jammu, Ludhiana, Gorakhpur, Haridwar, Ahmedabad, Patna, Cuttack, Jeypore, Kharagpur, Raiganj, Shillong and Tiruchirappalli.
 Last month, Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister attributed the rise in prices to a 26 per cent decline in domestic production during kharif and late-kharif seasons because of late monsoon followed by excess rains in major producing states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka.
 The minister has been maintaining that the government has taken all possible steps to rein in prices such as imposing a ban on exports and allowing imports of 1.2 lakh tonnes to boost supply.
 The Centre has also put restrictions on quantities of onions to be stocked by retailers and wholesalers.
 On Monday, the Centre further reduced the stock holding limit for onion to 2 tonnes from 5 tonnes for retail traders.
 Last week, the ministry had reduced the stock holding limit on wholesalers to 25 tonnes from 50 tonnes.
 State-owned MMTC has already contracted over 21,000 tonnes and the shipment is expected to arrive from this week.

The Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, made the announcement on Monday and also listed the new cities out. Currently, the metro rail line has an operational network of over 500 kms and will expand to 660 kms more for rapid urban transformation. As of now, metro is functional in 10 cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru and Kolkata being the first to kick off metro services in India in 1984. Fifteen more cities are also under consideration for metro coverage. Puri said that nearly 664 kms of metro rail network is under various stages of implementation while more than 515 kms is already operational in India. Nagpur, Pune and Ahmedabad are likely to get the network by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/railways/15-more-cities-will-soon-have-metro-network-union-minister-puri/articleshow/66419131.cms">next year</a>. The new cities that are on the list include Varanasi, Indore, Coimbatore, Kanpur, Bhopal, Patna, Surat, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram and Navi Mumbai. In an interaction with the members of Consultative Committee, Puri spoke about the new urban transformation in India and pointed out that the government provides financial support to metro rail projects in 3 forms. It can either give a grant to states of up to <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=184454">10%</a> of project costs, in the form of a 50:50 equity sharing with state governments or a viability gap funding to the extent of <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=184454">20%</a> of the capital cost of public transport projects under a PPP model. The state government and union territories, on the new list of 15 cities, have been asked to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) in accordance to the provisions in the Metro Rail Policy 2017 and submit it to the central government. The policy aims to ensure convenience to the people dependent on public transport. At the interaction, Puri also mentioned that the provision of last mile connectivity for the <keyword id="6366797" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro">Delhi Metro</keyword> is at an advanced stage.
