New Delhi, A rising tide of antibiotic-resistant bacteria -- if left unchecked, could kill an estimated 10 million people annually by 2050 -- was a fact known in the pre-Corona era and the Covid-19 situation has now put millions at risk by increasing their resistance to the antibiotics, warn researchers. To help address this alarming situation, researchers at University of Colorado Boulder in the US have discovered a <keyword id="1303648" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="chemical-compound">chemical compound</keyword> that works with a host's innate immune response to push <keyword id="10496956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="past-cellular-barriers">past cellular barriers</keyword> that help bacteria resist antibiotics. "The Covid-19 situation is definitely putting us at risk for increasing resistance to antibiotics, so it's more important now than ever that we come up with alternative treatments," said Corrie Detweiler, a professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. In a paper published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, the authors said that the finding could lead to a new arsenal for fighting what could be the next big public health threat. "If we don't solve the problem of finding new antibiotics or somehow making old antibiotics work again, we are going to see sharply increasing deaths from <keyword id="654183" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="bacterial-infections">bacterial infections</keyword> we thought we had beaten decades ago," said Detweiler. Her lab developed a technique called 'SAFIRE' for screening for new small molecules which work differently than older drugs. Of 14,400 candidates screened from a library of existing chemicals, 'SAFIRE' identified 70 that hold promise. The new paper centres around "JD1," which appears to be particularly effective at infiltrating what are known as "Gram-negative bacteria." With a tough exterior membrane that prevents antibiotics from accessing the cell, and another <keyword id="10496957" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="interior-membrane">interior membrane</keyword> providing a buffer, these bacteria (including Salmonella and E. coli) are inherently difficult to treat. But unlike other drugs, JD1 takes advantage of the host's initial immune assault on that outer bacterial membrane, then slips inside and goes after the inner membrane too. "This is the first study to show that you can target a Gram-negative bacteria's inner membrane by exploiting the innate immune response of the host," Detweiler noted. In laboratory and rodent experiments, JD1 reduced survival and spread of Gram-negative bacteria called Salmonella enterica by 95%. By 2050, the authors noted, there could be more deaths from <keyword id="6369335" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="antibiotic">antibiotic</keyword> resistance than from cancer. "As our existing antibiotics adapt and work less, we risk essentially going back to a period 100 years ago, when even a minor infection could mean death," said Detweiler. The pandemic has shone even more light on the problem, as many patients die not from the virus itself but from hard-to-treat secondary bacterial infections. Meanwhile, Detweiler and other scholars worry that heightened use of antibiotics to prevent or treat those secondary infections, while at times necessary, may be exacerbating resistance. Most antibiotics in use today were developed in the 1950s, and pharmaceutical companies have since scaled back on research in the field in favour of more profitable ventures. Scientists find novel compound as COVID-19 triggers superbug threat

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some social media posts claim that sunburns are caused by our diets — particularly seed oils.</li><li>A growing number of influencers are saying that eating the right foods will protect you from sunburns more than SPF. </li></ul>Perhaps the <a href="https://www.insider.com/skincare-trends-we-loved-2000s-new-improved-techniques-2023-2">worst skincare trend of the </a>early aughts was using tanning beds, each celebrity racing to be more copper-toned than the last. Since then, increased awareness of <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-diagnosed-melanoma-skin-cancer-birthmark-mole-tanning-2023-5">skin cancer risks</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-repair-sun-damaged-skin-according-to-dermatologist-2023-4">premature aging</a> has made sun protection more of a cultural norm, but some people have recently <a href="https://airmail.news/look/issues/2023-5-5/sun-burned" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reverted back to hating sunscreen</a>.Videos on TikTok stating that you don't need sunscreen, and your diet alone can protect your skin, have gotten thousands of views over the past year. "When people get sunburned, it's not because they're not wearing enough sunscreen, it's not because they've been in the sun too long," said <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thesamknight/video/7141920965834902826" target="_blank" rel="noopener">creator Sam Knight</a>, who has more than 84,000 followers, "a lot of times it's because of their diet." Knight made that claim in September 2022, but with summer just around the corner, the idea is gaining steam again. "Here's the number one reason why you're getting sunburned every summer," said <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@twweauclaire/video/7220921395818138922?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alex Grubish from The Wellness Way</a>, in April, "it's because there's a good chance you might be eating too many seed oils."Seed oils in particular are being accused of causing sunburns — <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CsFEck_O5N0/?igshid=MTIyMzRjYmRlZg%3D%3D">one Instagram post</a> with more than 45,000 likes titled "How to tan without sunscreen," said that you can't get skin cancer if you're not eating seed oils, according to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6718436/">a 2019 study (for the record that's absolutely not what the study, which was only performed on cells in a lab, found)</a>.Many of these posts state that the right foods will prevent sunburn and give you a healthier tan instead. (Reader, <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/does-sunscreen-prevent-tanning">there is no such thing</a> as a safe tan!) But actual dermatologists have a more straightforward answer. "Online claims that suggest you can avoid sunscreen use if you eat the right foods are false," <a href="https://www.ohsu.edu/people/alexander-witkowski-md-phd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Alexander Witkowski</a>, an assistant professor of dermatology at the OHSU School of Medicine, told Insider. While some foods can influence your skin health, he said, it is still essential for people to use sunscreen and limit sun exposure.<h2>Seed oils are a common ingredient, and they won't make you burn</h2>The idea that <a href="https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/scientists-debunk-seed-oil-health-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seed oils are "toxic</a>" and consuming them is a major source of our nutritional woes was popularized by <a href="https://www.gq.com/story/a-unified-theory-of-the-trad-health-food-influencer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advocates for "ancestral health."</a> The anti-seed oil movement argues that more inflammation can worsen skin damage, undermine the protection of substances in your body such as collagen, and contribute to sunburn. However, there's no evidence to support these claims, <a href="https://www.insider.com/seed-oils-arent-worse-than-cigarettes-despite-keto-claim-2020-7">registered dietitians previously told Insider</a>. <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29610056/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research</a> suggests that seed oils don't increase markers of cellular damage such as inflammation — and in some cases even appear to reduce them.And there's no legitimate research directly showing that consuming more seed oils increases your chances of burning in the sun, or that cutting them out can prevent it. <h2>Some studies show a vitamin-rich diet can improve general skin health</h2>While eating specific foods can't protect you from the sun like sunscreen can, some foods are better than others for overall skin health, and may make your skin more resilient against UV light. According to Witkowski, foods "rich in pigments and antioxidants" fall in this category, including <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/carotenoids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">carotenoid-rich foods</a> (carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes) and foods with <a href="https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/polyphenols" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sun-protective polyphenols</a> (strawberries, grapes). Additionally, he said vitamins C and E, omega-3s, and polyphenols <a href="https://www.insider.com/drinking-green-tea-can-improve-blood-sugar-gut-health-study-2022-7">found in green tea</a> all have skin benefits like reducing inflammation or the degree of skin damage. If you're following <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/mediterranean-diet#foods-to-eat">a healthy diet</a>, you should already be eating many of these foods. So chances are, the amount of broccoli you consume hasn't saved your skin from a brutal sunburn.<h2>When you're in the sun, food is no substitute for SPF</h2>While Witkowski said that changing your diet can benefit your skin, he strongly emphasized "the judicious use of SPF 30 sunscreen, hats, and UV-protective clothing" is still the best way to protect yourself from a sunburn — and from skin cancer. He said "the most studied, clinically safe, and effective" are <a href="https://www.insider.com/elta-md-sunscreen-review-glass-skin-no-white-cast-2023-3">mineral sunscreens</a> with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which work as physical barriers against both UVA and UVB rays. Misinformation has become so prevalent online that some organizations have launched initiatives to tackle it, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/googles-misinformation-invests-fact-checking-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Google News Initiative</a>, and Poynter's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/poynter-teen-fact-checkers-tackle-misinformation-ahead-of-election-2020-10?" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MediaWise Teen Fact-Checking Network</a>.<h2>What is misinformation?</h2>The term misinformation refers to information that is false or inaccurate, and is often spread widely with others, regardless of an intent to deceive. Business Insider spoke with Brian Southwell, <a href="https://utpress.utexas.edu/books/southwell-thorson-sheble-misinformation-and-mass-audiences" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an author</a>, social scientist, professor, and director at <a href="https://www.rti.org/expert/brian-g-southwell" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RTI International</a>, a nonprofit research institute, about the differences between misinformation and disinformation, as well as how to spot each in the real world. <h3>Examples of misinformation</h3><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anthony-quinn-warner-false-5g-conspiracy-theory-nashville-bombing-explained-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">There's a conspiracy theory circulating online</a> that claims 5G cellular networks cause cancer, or even COVID-19, despite there being no scientific evidence to support this claim. The main idea behind the false claim is that 5G radio waves are harmful to the brain and cause health issues such as autism and cancer. However, experts have debunked this concern, explaining that 5G radio waves cannot damage the DNA in our cells, nor can they even penetrate past the skin, which acts as a protective barrier. This theory is an example of misinformation because it presents incorrect and out-of-context information as fact. Southwell said he's been seeing a lot of misinformation surrounding the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/at-least-800-people-died-coronavirus-misinformation-3-months-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coronavirus pandemic</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anti-vaxxers-concern-covid-19-vaccine-unhelpful-experts-say-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vaccine</a>. He noted that in early spring when the virus was just beginning to grip the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not recommend the use of masks. But just weeks later, the agency <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-recommending-cloth-masks-face-coverings-in-public-spaces-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reversed its recommendation</a> based on new data <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-cloth-masks-provide-personal-protection-for-the-wearer-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">citing their effectiveness</a>. "Science offers us an estimate - the best idea based on available evidence now [or] six months from now that might change, and that's okay, that's the way science works," Southwell said. "So if you've got people that are not paying attention to the historical context, and they're going back willingly pointing to something that was a year old and reporting that as new information now, well that combination is misinformation."<h2>What is disinformation?</h2>While misinformation is false information that is created and spread regardless of an intent to harm or deceive, disinformation is a type of misinformation that is created to be deliberately deceptive. Both forms may be shared widely, regardless of whether or not the sharer knows the information is wrong."Disinformation is not a 21st century phenomenon," Southwell said. "When you've got a lack of correct information, and an anxious population with a lot at stake, disinformation is going to flourish. When people are anxious and looking for answers, somebody is going to provide those answers and capitalize on it financially or politically." Misinformation can turn into disinformation when it's still shared by individuals or groups who know it's wrong yet intentionally spread it to cast doubt or stir divisiveness. <h3>Examples of disinformation</h3>One of the most relevant examples of a <keyword id="3136604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="disinformation-campaign">disinformation campaign</keyword> is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-russia-google-twitter-2016-election-trump-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election</a> with help from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-disinformation-campaigns-new-oxford-study-2019-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook ads</a>, pages, and private groups. Russian actors targeted specific geographic regions and swing states to spread propaganda against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and sow division among Americans. Unsubstantiated rumors, gossip, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qanon-trump-supporters-rallies-conspiracy-theory-save-the-children-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claims of grand conspiracy</a> can also count as pieces of disinformation.<h2>How to recognize misinformation and disinformation</h2>"Regardless of whether it's disinformation or misinformation, it's important to know that it's inaccurate and it means that you should not be believing it, and you should not be relying on that information," Southwell said.According to Southwell, if you come across information with the following characteristics, you should consider it suspicious:<ul><li>If it seems too good to be true</li><li>If it plays to your own implicit biases</li><li>If it elicits either extreme positive or negative emotions</li><li>If it's not properly sourced, or the stats appear out of date</li></ul>The best, baseline way to interrogate a source of information is to check:<ul><li>The author</li><li>The organization</li><li>The date it was published</li><li>The evidence</li><li>What other sources say</li></ul>"Always try to figure out where the information is coming from," Southwell said. "Do you know the original source of the information? Is it listed clearly? Can you clearly tell what organization is responsible for this? With summer temperatures heating up, slathering on SPF 50 sometimes won't even guarantee protection from the sun's rays. More and more beach-goers are also looking for sunscreen that has for more naturally-derived active ingredients over chemical ones like oxybenzone, which was also recently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hawaii-ban-sunscreens-oxybenzone-how-to-choose-coral-safe-sunscreen-2018-7">banned</a> in Hawaii."There's an obvious need to improve current sun protection, a need for higher SPF, broader protection than what the current sunscreens offer," said Ayala Lampel, a chemist at the City University of New York.With fellow chemist Rein Ulijn, Lampel sought to create a better, nature-inspired sunscreen.The product they created is a bio-inspired material called "Peptide Pigments" that can be used as supplemental UV boosters. They can increase the SPF and broad spectrum of existing UV-filtering active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. That way, sunscreen companies could use smaller amounts of these active ingredients without losing any strength. <h2>Targeting melanin</h2>What started as an academic project at the Advanced <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Research Center at CUNY to create melanin-like peptide molecules turned into a commercial pursuit shortly after the chemists' results were published in the journal <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/content/356/6342/1064.editor-summary">Science</a> in June 2017.To get to a better sunscreen, the researchers turned to biology.This led them to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/melanin">melanin</a>, a biological pigment that absorbs and disperses UV light across the skin, forming a barrier that protects the skin from UV damage in humans. It's also responsible for summer tans and the color of skin and hair. "It's a bit of a miracle material in some ways in terms of its protective ability and its aesthetic function and the fact that it's seen in all living organisms," Uljin said. But often, it's poorly understood and difficult to produce in the lab, he said.<h2>How it works</h2>What chemists have tried to do in the past is produce melanin by starting with tyrosine, an amino acid precursor, then oxidizing it. Tyrosine is a building block for proteins and other polypeptide materials like melanin. The oxidation reaction works like the browning of apples or bananas or avocados, in which melanin is also the culprit.Upon oxidation, tyrosine becomes very reactive. And if you have a group of tyrosines colliding together, you end up with "a mess," as Ulijn calls it. Most lab-produced melanin end up as black, dirt-like polymers that cannot be dispersed or incorporated into existing cosmetic products. Imagine applying a foundation speckled with dirt onto your face. What Ulijn and Lampel tried to do was yield a more favorable material from the melanin formation process in the lab by imitating how melanin forms in nature.Instead of using tyrosine as a precursor, Lampel and Ulijn pre-organized it into a short peptide. These peptides consist of organized amino acids and give the molecule more favorable chemical properties. When the tyrosines react, instead of everything happening all at once, it's now more ordered.The end result was a product that was simpler than melanin, but retained the same overall properties including broad spectrum sun protection against UV-A and UV-B rays as well as blue light like those emitted from electronic devices. By hacking biology, Lampel and Uljin were able to make the molecules more customizable. They can tune the color of the molecules to match it to different foundation shades as well as the UV absorption by changing the sequence of the peptides. Lampel and Uljin designed the product to easily dissolve into existing cosmetic products. That way, it has a non-oily texture, and doesn't leave behind white streaks. To start, the product is intended to work alongside existing sunscreen products, but Lampel and Ulijin want to see if they can completely replace current sunscreens one day.For the past five months, the researchers have been working to ensure that the product is consistently reproducible. Now, they're seeking out a corporate partner to collaborate with testing out safety and efficacy. Sigfox to expand IoT networks to Mexico and Latin America

But recent developments hint that certain common causes of blindness might be reversible in the near future. We are able to see because nerve cells at the back of the eye respond to light and transmit signals to the brain that we interpret as vision. Some rare genetic diseases and common non-genetic ones (including age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma) damage these cells, which then don't function as well and eventually die, causing blindness.The body only has limited means to repair nerve cells and no way to replace dead ones, so damage to the nervous system that causes blindness is considered <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/audacious/aboutGoal">permanent</a>. Given that grim prognosis, the idea that we might able to restore sight to a significant subset of blind people just 15 years from now seems incredibly optimistic. But scientists at the National Eye Institute think they can make it happen. "We don't think this is so far from reality here," Michael Steinmetz, the Director of Extramural Research for the National Eye Institute, told Business Insider.To that end, the National Eye Institute recently <a href="http://www.nih.gov/news/health/may2015/nei-01.htm">announced</a> the first round of projects to be funded through its <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/audacious">Audacious Goals Initiative</a>. The "audacious goal" that gives the initiative its name is to restore vision by regenerating lost nerve cells. At this stage, as <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25869002">stem cell research</a> in animal models and <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/news/pressreleases/retinal_disease_gene_therapy">gene therapy clinical trials</a> for people with genetic diseases have begun to show promise, the National Eye Institute is looking to find ways to get past barriers that have stalled progress on restoring blindness so far. The first projects to be funded will help scientists measure the function of nerve cells involved with vision, going beyond current imaging techniques that just show what cells look like, Steinmetz said.Researchers plan to map how nerve cells in the retina at the back of the eye interact and signal to each other. They'll also try to figure out exactly how large numbers of these individual cells respond to light without damaging living tissue. Besides looking more closely at the cells in the retina, researchers will also work toward techniques that could image the optic nerve, a bundle of nerve cell fibers that carries visual information from the retina to the brain. A final project aims to improve the resolution of current methods of imaging the retina, so researchers can focus on the activity of individual cells. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Developing all of this imaging technology, while not work that's directly trying to regenerate nerve cells, would provide essential infrastructure for future projects. Before scientists can cure blindness, they need these imaging tools to get a better picture of what they're working with. Being able to look at individual cells and see how they're functioning will tell scientists what the interventions they test are actually doing at the cellular level.These projects also have the potential to help physicians catch and treat vision-damaging diseases sooner, Steinmetz said. If physicians and their patients know something is going wrong in the eye early on, before damage shows up in the ways we are currently able to detect, they could likely implement therapies to preserve the nerve cells from further damage. Then, the disease could be stopped before it ever gets far enough to kill nerve cells or cause vision loss. Time will tell whether or not we're able to regenerate nerve cells and cure blindness, and what role these imaging projects might play.
