<ul class="summary-list"><li>I've been riding trains across the US for 26 years, and it's one of my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-thing-to-do-while-traveling-food-tour-frequent-traveler">favorite ways to travel</a>.</li><li>After hundreds of trips, I have a running list of some of the worst tendencies passengers have.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amtrak-prepare-for-long-train-rides-problems-frequent-traveler-2024-11">Train travel</a> can be an adventure.</p><p>Whizzing by different terrain and meeting new people are all part of it. But it can also be chaos, especially if other riders are doing things that irritate you.</p><p>After 26 years of riding trains up and down <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-new-york-to-los-angeles-differences-between-coasts-2020-3">both US coasts</a> and across the Midwest, here are seven things I wish passengers would stop doing.</p><h2 id="14235886-20be-4584-bcb6-20a29c790900">Talking your seat partner's ear off</h2><p>As is the case on most <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-bus-vs-regular-bus-review-jet-flixbus-nyc-dc-2023-8">public transportation</a>, you run the risk of happening upon talkative seatmates on trains.</p><p>I don't usually mind having brief conversations with people near me — it's a shared experience, after all. However, not everyone wants to be social.</p><p>Forcing someone into conversation for an entire, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-everyone-should-know-before-taking-long-train-77-hours-2022-9">multi-hour train ride</a> can be exhausting. Especially since many people take train rides as a more leisurely and relaxing travel option.</p><p>If you connect and happen to enjoy the chat, go for it. But consent from both parties is key.</p><h2 id="77f11438-75f5-4108-8827-fcd148ae6188">Bringing too much luggage</h2><div type="image" title="people rolling luggage down a train platform" height="3032" width="4043" msid="115141208" hostid="261" sizebytes="985670"></div><p>Similar to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-never-do-booking-travel-credit-card-points-frequent-traveler">air travel</a>, there's limited space on the floor in front of you and in the overhead bins on a train. Try to stick to your fair share of luggage, or plan in advance to check it when you board.</p><p>On Amtrak, at least, most reservations allow you to bring one bag and two <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/travel/best-carry-on-bag">carry-on items</a>. Of course, you may be able to bring more if you book a private car or upgrade your ticket.</p><p>People are getting on and off at every stop, so even if your train car looks empty when you board, you should still be mindful of how much space you're taking up.</p><h2 id="b5ebcca9-76ab-4773-bd72-d6bed4b45ca7">Spreading your things out across a row of seats</h2><p>Speaking of taking up too much space, spreading all your things across a row (or more) of seats is annoying for fellow passengers.</p><p>Although there isn't a ton of extra space if you need to unpack something or resituate your luggage, I wish people were more mindful about taking too many seats, blocking the middle aisle, and knocking into the people around them.</p><p>This also goes for lying down across multiple seats. If you really need to stretch out, go to the café car or observation space, where there's usually a little more room to move around.</p><h2 id="5dbcf44f-1b63-4716-9029-111dd6c6bae0">Leaving trash and spills for others to clean</h2><p>There is a sense of "I don't have to do that" on trains and planes when it comes to cleaning up after yourself.</p><p>It's especially annoying because there are trash receptacles throughout the train, making it easy to organize your space as you go. I usually find them near stairwells, in restrooms, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trying-amtrak-dining-car-meals-review-coast-starlight-photos-2022-10">in the dining car</a>, or at the end of some of the passenger cars.</p><p>Your trash is your responsibility — the same goes for anything you spill during the trip.</p><h2 id="745fe03c-be48-4834-84df-12a10fae3705">Trapping people on the stairs or between cars</h2><div type="image" title="space in between cars on an amtrak train" height="2160" width="2880" msid="115141212" hostid="261" sizebytes="81186"></div><p>Try not to stand in the way of people in the space between cars or on the narrow (sometimes winding) stairwells.</p><p>As we've established, space is limited, and if you trap someone for too long, they may start to feel unsafe or uncomfortable.</p><p>It's sometimes unavoidable to momentarily block people as they're getting on and off the train, but otherwise, be mindful and stay aware of your surroundings.</p><h2 id="86e4b8b0-769e-42d4-98f3-1b30e6ec3924">Watching a video or listening to music without earbuds</h2><p>If you want to avoid irritating everyone around you, do want you can to reduce your <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pickleball-court-noise-driving-us-all-crazy-scientists-trying-solution-2023-11">noise pollution</a>.</p><p>You might be fascinated by the cooking video you found on YouTube, but the rest of the passengers probably aren't. And no matter how amazing your taste in music is, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/best-over-ear-headphones">use headphones</a> while you're on the train.</p><p>This also goes for taking phone calls — no one wants to hear your whole conversation on speakerphone.</p><h2 id="d2d768c1-361b-4315-978a-afef06de12dc">Taking your shoes off</h2><p>When you're in a public place that's not a pool or spa, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flight-attendants-why-you-should-never-take-off-shoes-plane-2023-3">taking your shoes off</a> probably isn't going to warrant a pleasant reaction.</p><p>This is especially true when you're trapped in what's essentially a metal tube for hours.</p><p>To avoid bothering your fellow train riders, keep your shoes on. I personally wouldn't want my feet touching the floor of a train anyway.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A mass IT outage is causing global travel chaos. </li><li>Passengers face delays and cancellations at airports as digital services relying on Microsoft were affected. </li></ul><p>A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/major-disruptions-airline-bank-london-stock-exchange-microsoft-outage-2024-7">global IT outage</a> has brought travel systems worldwide to a standstill, causing issues for passengers at airports, on train services, and at gas stations.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mass-it-outage-companies-operations-airlines-affected-microsoft-crowdstrike-2024-7">Major airlines, banks, and retailers</a> are experiencing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mass-it-outage-microsoft-chaos-delays-distruption-shown-in-photos-2024-7">widespread disruptions</a> after Microsoft reported problems with its online services, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crowdstrike-global-it-outage-one-defective-it-update-sparked-chaos-2024-7">linked to an issue at cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike</a>.</p><p>American, United, and Delta <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-american-warn-pilots-of-communication-issues-amid-grounding-2024-7">issued ground stops on Friday</a> due to potential communication issues, while airports and airlines worldwide reported issues and delays affecting airlines.</p><p>As boarding, tickets, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-american-warn-pilots-of-communication-issues-amid-grounding-2024-7">pilot communication channels</a> were affected by the outage, passengers were hit with delays and cancellations.</p><p>Scott Sanders, a passenger at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, told Business Insider that people were sleeping on the ground due to the disruption. The atmosphere was relatively calm, he said.</p><p>Sanders' flight to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) had been scheduled to depart on Thursday at 10:55 p.m. However, after one and a half hours of sitting on board the plane, passengers were told to disembark.</p><p>He still hoped to reach his father's 80th birthday celebration on <span>Saturday</span>.</p><p>Jordan van den Lamb, a public servant, told BI that he had been stranded for six hours at Hobart Airport in Tasmania.</p><p>Lamb said the airport was empty because other passengers were told their flights were canceled.</p><p>He was told there was still a chance his flight would take off. But five hours later, it was canceled. Jetstar would not pay for accommodation, he said.</p><p>But it did offer aggrieved passengers two vouchers amounting to $10.70 (16 AUD), which they were only allowed to spend all at once with no change given.</p><h2 id="94377cb2-ef0f-4b53-b24c-a56b1ba255b5">'Tired and hopeless'</h2><p>At Los Angeles International Airport, Sarah Patterson experienced a similar disruption.</p><p>Patterson told BI her flight with Spirit Airlines to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) was delayed by more than two hours on Thursday evening before it was eventually canceled.</p><p>It took three hours to get her checked luggage back from the airline, she said.</p><p>On top of the delay, the airline's app was completely unresponsive and they had been told that no rebookings could be made.</p><p>"There's about three flights of people, at least, all in a single line for the Spirit desk, all trying to get rebooked," Patterson said.</p><p>"I have a family vacation I'm supposed to go on on Saturday, so it's pretty brutal," she said.</p><p>A spokesperson for Spirit told BI that its team is working "as quickly as possible to have everything restored." The company wrote on X Friday that it is currently unable to rebook flights for impacted passengers because of the outage.</p><p>Jacqualine Ebule was also stuck at LAX after boarding her 11:15 p.m. flight to Washington, D.C. An hour later, they were told to disembark, and at 3:30 a.m., the flight was canceled.</p><p>"We sat on the tarmac for an hour, and they said it was a technical issue with Microsoft," Ebule told BI. "We then had to deplane and everyone has just been sitting around waiting."</p><p>Calling the whole experience "a hassle" she was thinking of just heading home.</p><p>"People with kids look extremely tired and hopeless," she added.</p><h2 id="c9ae466d-6ea6-4ba9-a551-18531a175aca">Reverting to manual processes</h2><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-it-outage-y2k-24-years-later-crowdstrike-cyber-expert-2024-7">global IT outage</a> is affecting airlines differently depending on their use of Microsoft services for their operations.</p><p>At Melbourne Airport, Australia, the international airlines Jetstar and Scoot were experiencing ongoing issues, while all other international airlines were processing passengers normally, the airport confirmed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/Melair/status/1814217651834786060">on X</a> on Friday morning.</p><p>Some airlines resorted to using manual processes to manage the situation.</p><div type="image" title="A man stands looking at a piece of paper in front of a whiteboard displaying flight information in an airport lounge." height="4032" width="3024" msid="111866981" hostid="261"></div><p>In Singapore Changi Airport, whiteboards displaying flight numbers were laid out in a terminal 1 lounge.</p><p>Elsewhere, passengers of Indian airline IndiGo posted images of handwritten boarding passes on social media. BI was unable to verify their accounts. However, the airline confirmed on X that the outage had impacted access to boarding passes and check-in.</p><h2 id="526b6277-1c02-4b21-8488-0b787cf60316">Trains and gas stations</h2><p>Travelers trying to use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-dc-subway-global-it-outage-crowdstrike-new-york-washington-2024-7">other forms of transport</a> have also faced disruption.</p><p>National train operators in the UK <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/nationalrailenq/status/1814206628113113153">reported</a> network-wide IT issues on Friday morning.</p><p>In the US, Amtrak confirmed to customers on X that they were experiencing problems with their booking website, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-dc-subway-global-it-outage-crowdstrike-new-york-washington-2024-7">arrival information at some stations</a> was not working.</p><p>Drivers were not exempt from the travel chaos either.</p><p>Some Speedway gas stations around the US closed because digital gas pumps failed to work, and others were not accepting payments, a Speedway customer service employee confirmed to BI.</p><p>"They had to move to cash only and some don't have any internet," the employee said.</p>
