"Leaders need to ask themselves and their organizations tough questions ... How can we overcome the natural instinct to define 'our way' of doing things as the best? You will need a 'partnering' team to help identify the skills required, review opportunities, make the big decisions, and drive 'partnering' and alliance management as a way of being throughout your organization. Otherwise, your once great capabilities could become great liabilities."

Some of the most successful and accomplished people are really teams: Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, Bill and Melinda Gates, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard (who've won multiple Academy Awards), Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank (who started Home Depot), Joe Torre and Don Zimmer… the list could go on forever.

Why is it that sometimes you can take two people, add them together and get a more successful result than either would have achieved working alone?

As I thought about (that question), I found myself wishing I was an artist rather than a weekend writer. Inspired perhaps by Marc Chagall, I would paint three canvases to make my point, all of a man riding a horse. The first would be a tiny man atop a giant horse, the second would be a giant man atop a tiny horse, and the third would be a man and a horse of equal sizes.
In the first scenario, the horse would be too strong, and too uncontrollable for the man. The second would be equally unsuccessful, for a tiny horse can't move with a giant man weighing him down. But the third match would be perfect, with the man and horse able to move successfully in concert. The man represents intellect, the horse represents emotion. Both need to be equally balanced for any leader to succeed.

You can't do this stuff on your own. "Even Einstein," says Charlie Munger, "wouldn't have been successful if there weren't other people he didn't talk to all the time. Total isolation does not work. You need interaction, putting your own thoughts into expression; you learn things just from doing it."

The best combination, (Eisner) learned, comes from partnership, when two people balance each other, constantly reminding the other of the need to keep the conscious and unconscious in harmony, to make each other smarter, make each other better.

One of the reasons that partnerships fail is that the spotlight accommodates one person a lot better than two. "But," Eisner writes, "it takes real trust and understanding for both partners to be satisfied with that arrangement."
Everyone was telling Michael Eisner that partnering with Michael Ovitz, the head of Creative Artists Agency "and the media-anointed most powerful man in the entertainment business" was a great idea. Buffett advised Eisner to pass on the partnership.

"Both of you want the spotlight," I remember him saying bluntly. "Take Charlie and me: I want the spotlight, but he doesn't. So it works. And Charlie has integrity, which further ensures that it works. You will be in conflict with Ovitz from day one, and you will never trust him. Don't do it."
(Eisner) did (the partnership). And Warren was right - the partnership lasted barely a year.

The key to good partnerships, says Warren Buffett, is trust.

They have complete trust, complete faith, and complete belief in each other. And that reverberates through every phone call they have, every deal they discuss, and every decision they make.
"You cannot keep score," says Warren. "It just doesn't work with the best of human relationships. It shouldn't be even suppressed - it should be something that doesn't even exist."

And this bit was key for me. You can play the alpha-role is some parts of your life but you need to know your role in the partnership. Consider the Buffet-Munger partnership:

Munger is not the standard model for the kind of partner who prefers to lie low and fade into the background. Everywhere else in his life, Charlie Munger plays the alpha role - with his family, in board meetings for the variety of companies and charities with which he's involved, with me when I visited him at his office. I usually don't have trouble getting a word into a conversation. Talking to Charlie Munger is different - I did a lot more listening than talking.
"That's one of the beauties of the partnership," says Charlie. "I am in so many activities where I am the dominant personality. Most people do not 'fit into' that mode - they can only operate in that mode. Yet I am particularly willing to play the secondary role. Warren's a more able man in doing what we're doing, so it's the appropriate response. There are some times you should be first, some times you should be second, and some times you should be third."

Partnerships also encourage humility. "It's not letting ego or jealousy or your own personality take over," Munger says. "Intelligence takes over."

The Sony Walkman had just launched, huge shoulder pads were "in," and master limited partnerships (MLPs), portfolios investing in different ventures or companies, had just been introduced to the financial landscape. Though publicly traded, like stocks, MLPs were organized like private investments - and as such, were soon widely used to take advantage of a variety of tax loopholes. The IRS caught on, and legislation in 1986 and 1987 seriously curtailed MLPs and how they operatedBut MLPs remain popular today, and can still play a role in portfolios - especially for investors interested in certain industries. At its core, an MLP combines the tax benefits of a private partnership arrangement with the liquidity and accessibility of a public company. Let's take a closer look at what a master limited partnership is, how it works, and the pros and cons to this form of investment.<h2>What is a master limited partnership (MLP)?</h2>A master limited partnership (MLP) is organized as a limited partnership, which is usually a private investment arrangement. However, it trades daily on public stock <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>. Investors in MLPs buy units (as shares are called) on a national securities exchange. Investors can see the prices of and sell their units at any time. (Selling units is much harder with private limited partnerships).MLPs were created to promote investment in some capital-intensive industries, presenting investors with a chance at higher returns and greater diversification than just a single stock. MLPs do offer some growth and chance for profit, but they're most famed for providing substantial income via regular payouts, called distributions. These distributions usually are made quarterly.The Tax Reform Act of 1986 defined how these companies can be structured and the Revenue Act of 1987 limits what types of companies can ultimately become MLPs. To be considered an MLP today, the venture must focus on acquisitions relating to either real estate, natural resources, or commodities. The majority of MLPs are in the oil and gas industries.<h2>How master limited partnerships work</h2>For the most part, there are two types of partners in an MLP organization: general partners and limited partners.General partners (GPs) oversee the day-to-day operations of the MLP, maintaining board and management control in exchange for a small ownership stake. Limited partners, or unitholders as they're officially known, are ordinary, outside investors. They provide capital for the MLP's acquisitions and don't have a say in management. MLPs are known for their steady income streams and rich returns. <a href="https://www.suredividend.com/mlp-list/#:~:text=MLPs%20tend%20to%20have%20yields,MLPs%20have%20yields%20above%2010%25" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Many individual MLPs have yields above 10%</a>. How can they be so high? Because MLPs are bound to distribute 90% of their income to shareholders. They aren't allowed to plow unlimited amounts back into the firm or spend on expansion, as regular companies can do. These returns come either in the form of income generated by the investment properties, or gains from sales of them.<h2>How are MLPs taxed?</h2>But wait, there's more. MLPs have some tax advantages that enhance returns, too. An MLP is structured as a "pass-through entity." As a "pass-through" entity, the MLP does not pay any income tax itself. So, investors theoretically get more money distributed to them. Fast fact: Limited partnerships and other pass-through entities get their name because any tax liability "passes-through" them and goes directly to the limited partners. In contrast, dividends and other payouts from regular companies are double-taxed - the company first pays corporate income tax before distributing them, and then the investor has to pay their own income tax on them.Then there's the way the quarterly distributions can be classified. Sometimes, it's as income. But distributions can also be classified as a return of capital - which is not taxable when the unitholder receives it. It's only when the investor actually sells their units that any profit would be taxable - and then it's at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capital-gains-tax-rates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">capital gains</a> tax rate, which generally lower than the regular income tax rate.<h2>The benefits of investing in MLPs</h2>Like any other investment, there are advantages and disadvantages to investing in master limited partnerships. Among the advantages:<ul><li>Tax benefits: Since the MLP is a pass-through entity, it doesn't pay income taxes - which can mean more money for investors. Returns may be taxed as capital gains, too, instead of income.</li><li>High yields: MLPs offer above-average returns. For example, according to a list compiled by <a href="https://www.suredividend.com/mlp-list/#:~:text=MLPs%20tend%20to%20have%20yields,MLPs%20have%20yields%20above%2010%25" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sure Dividend</a>, an investment advisor specializing in MLPs, Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP) yields over 25%, compared to the S&amp;P 500's approximately 2% average <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-dividend-yield" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dividend yield</a>.</li><li>Dependable returns: MLPs are in industries that have a track record of steady returns, making them fairly reliable investments.</li></ul><ul><li>Liquidity/transparency: MLPs units can be readily sold on a public exchange, and their prices are more transparent than those of a traditional private, limited partnership. </li></ul><h2>The drawbacks of MLPs</h2>Among the downsides of MLPs:<ul><li>Unexpected tax consequences: If you hold your shares in a tax-deferred account, like an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roth-ira-for-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IRA</a>, your distributions could be counted as taxable income, requiring you to pay annual taxes on unrelated business income (UBI).</li><li>Lack of diversification: Since these funds limited to certain specific industries - most modern MLPs focus on oil and gas companies - they don't represent a diversified investment. In other words, they are a very specific industry play. </li><li>Low growth potential: Because MLPs redistribute most of their cash to investors, that doesn't leave much money for reinvestment or growth. If not carefully managed, MLPs run the risk of having to take on additional debt to finance operations or deal with expenses.</li><li>Complicated tax filings: MLPs report their distributions on a special tax form called a K-1. These are notorious for being sent out late to investors and can be complicated to decipher. All this makes your tax return filing trickier.</li></ul><h2>The financial takeaway</h2>Because of their unique structure, master limited partnerships come with some tax benefits that lets them post notably high yields. And they have more transparency and liquidity than traditional partnerships. However, this unique investment vehicle isn't for everyone. If you are considering going this route, the first step is to do research into the MLP itself. At base, you should look at how the MLP generates its funds in order to ensure that it has sustainable cash flow. However, you'll also want to look at how much cash that the MLP is carrying in comparison to its distributions. If the MLP violates that rule about distributing 90% of its income, the IRS could disallow its status. "You do not need to build an entire program in order to collaborate. You can start with a smaller group, learn from the experience, tweak it, and keep going."

Some people seem to be taking seriously a proposal to crowd-source a $2,147,483,647 donation to <keyword id="6409883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="wikileaks">WikiLeaks</keyword> if it can leak details on the controversial <keyword id="308360" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trans-Pacific-Partnership">Trans-Pacific Partnership</keyword> (TPP).
hat would WikiLeaks do with $2,147,483,647? It would be an potential game-changing amount of money for the secret-sharing organization, and, amazingly, right now it might be a possibility - a new website is pledging to give that that huge reward to the organization if it leaks the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
It's certainly a plan with noble intentions - it would be a leak almost on the scale of Edward Snowden - but there's a huge problem with it, which we'll get to in a bit.
First, some background. The average person may not have heard of the TPP, a proposed free trade agreement under negotiation by Australia, Brunei, Chile, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam, but experts believe it will be very important. Ian Bremmer has called it "most important trade agreement on the world agenda right now," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how-obama-should-have-saved-face-in-asia-2013-10">for example</a>, pointing out that almost 40 percent of world GDP would be involved in the deal.
However, critics have two major concerns about the TPP. The first argument is that TPP's intentions are far more radical than most realize, with that lobbyists are pushing an agenda that would suit the globalization aims of multinational corporations, not the average person - in particular with restrictive intellectual property laws.
The second concern is that the process is being conducted in secret, and the public is being left in the dark - as Cory Doctorow <a href="http://boingboing.net/2013/11/07/nyt-endorses-brutal-secret-i.html">of Boing Boing points out</a>, it's a deal "negotiated in utmost secrecy, without public participation, whose text is still not public." That a deal of this magnitude is being conducted in secret is understandably worrying, and there have been some leaks, but the full text of the proposed agreement remains <a href="http://tppinfo.org/resources/leaked-texts-country-info/">out of the hands of the public</a>.
This is where Just Foreign Policy, who <a href="http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/about/mission">describe themselves</a> as "independent and non-partisan membership organization dedicated to reforming U.S. foreign policy," come in. The group are apparently behind a new website offering a crowd-funded reward to WikiLeaks if they leak the entire TPP agreement.
The idea is that by giving the money to <a href="http://org.salsalabs.com/o/1439/content_item/freetpp">WikiLeaks rather than an individual leaker</a>, the leaker cannot be accused of leaking for private profit (and should, hopefully, be a bit more protected from legal prosecution). Also, by crowdsourcing the money (and limiting the donations to less than $250), the group say they are able to "promote the idea we are all invested in the outcome of these negotiations."
Understandably, the plan has attracted some attention, making its way to the front page of Reddit and being <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=http%3A%2F%2Forg.salsalabs.com%2Fo%2F1439%2Fcontent_item%2Ffreetpp&amp;src=typd&amp;f=realtime">widely shared on Twitter</a>. But - here comes the bad part - the way the plan has been implemented is laughably flawed.
The biggest problem is most basic. The website is asking only that users "pledge" to donate that money if the TPP deal is leaked. There's no guarantee whatsoever that you actually have to pay that money, so already the final figure is going to be a bit suspect. What's worse, is that the website doesn't actually require a valid name or email address to donate. Hence, I was just able to pledge $250 as "<a href="http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Guy_Incognito">Guy Incognito</a>" with some phony email address. Anyone can do this.
It gets worse. Reddit users noticed that a pledge of $2,147,483,647 seemed a little bit high - in fact, its the maximum <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2147483647">value maximum value for a 32-bit signed integer in computing</a>, meaning that either the amount donated has reached its absolute maximum, or there is some other type of error. Another Reddit user noticed that if you turn off Javascript on the website, you can <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1q5jpx/62k_usd_reward_offered_for_wikileaks_to_obtain/cd9jejf">"pledge" to "donate" any amount of money you'd like</a> (for example, Guy Incognito just pledged $100 billion). Amazingly, it appears that the <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1q5jpx/62k_usd_reward_offered_for_wikileaks_to_obtain/cd9jhr0">website was designed on Adobe Dreamweaver</a>.
There are plenty of great ways to argue that leaking the text of the TPP would be a good thing to do, but unfortunately, no matter how noble this plan is, it's incredibly flawed. The best we can hope from this current plan is that it raises awareness of a serious issue.

Is Goldman Sachs' partnership losing some of its shine?

A decade ago, when <keyword id="308360" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trans-Pacific-Partnership">Trans-Pacific Partnership</keyword> (<keyword id="381175" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="TPP">TPP</keyword>) was conceived, it was proposed as a means to promote labour standards, human rights, environmental projections and prosperity in Asia without the use of force or coercion. At its <keyword id="24479" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="heart">heart</keyword>, TPP is designed as a business deal that aims at removing barriers to trade between the US and 11 other <keyword id="2763718" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pacific-Rim-countries">Pacific Rim countries</keyword>: Australia, <keyword id="128582" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brunei">Brunei</keyword>, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Considering that these 12 nations together are responsible for about 40% of <a href="http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/199.asp">global gross domestic product</a> (<keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword>), TPP is expected to lead to far reaching changes in the way trade is carried out across the globe. 
 Essentially, TPP would reduce or eliminate tariffs (taxes on imports and exports) among signatory countries, making it easier for those countries to trade with each other. It also addresses topics ranging from illegal fishing to climate change to labour rights. The US has been pushing for stricter international enforcement of <keyword id="388837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="intellectual-property">intellectual property</keyword> rights, like patents and trademarks under TPP. 
 
In fact, TPP is envisaged to go much beyond a trade deal and attempts to advance standards regarding environmental projection, labour rights, intellectual property, government procurement and state-owned enterprises, mostly due to the success of the GATT and WTO process which has brought down world tariff levels already. 
 
After years of discussions and negotiations, the 12 member countries recently agreed to a final text of the pact. Considering the multi-pronged challenges involved in reaching a pact connecting 12 nations with varied geopolitical histories, this is seen as a significant milestone. If passed by Congress, TPP will give the US a boost in influencing the future shape of an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=emerging+markets">emerging Asia</a>. The partnership has the potential to become President Barack Obama’s biggest foreign policy success on par with the <keyword id="41896" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Iran">Iran</keyword> deal and opening of Cuba. Also, TPP would enhance and speed up Obama’s ‘Asia pivot’ strategy (which is supposed to be a comprehensive strategy encompassing economics and diplomacy as well as security), aimed at a larger role in reshaping the geopolitical and business climate in the continent. 
 
As for Japan, a key Asian member in the group, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=trans+pacific">TPP</a> will help it strengthen its influence in Asia as a shaper of business agenda and also to enhance the presence of the US as its ally in the region which would also help it counterbalance the dominance in trade and geopolitics of bigger neighbour China. 
 For Canada and Mexico, two key members from the American continent which are already part of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)—a trade deal that took effect in 1994 under the Clinton administration by getting rid of most tariffs on goods traded among the US, Canada and Mexico—TPP would further expand the scope of trade at a global scale. <keyword id="162386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-America">Central America</keyword> Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which came into effect a decade later and essentially extended NAFTA provisions to five Central American nations, is compared with TPP though its scope is limited to enhancement of trade among countries within the American continent. 
 
However, over a decade since TPP was originally conceived, it has undergone a significant change in terms of its ambitions. According to critics, this has already made it a threat to smaller peers, especially when it comes to intellectual property. Over the years, lobbyists, lawyers and corporate money are said to have corrupted its core; liberal idea of enhancing free flow of trade and turned it into something more questionable. More than a ploy by the US to use it as a <a href="http://csis.org/publication/pacnet-43-september-29-2005-hedging-against-china-challenge">hedging</a> strategy to counterbalance China’s rise, TPP is seen by critics as a means to protect interests of big corporates, especially multinational pharma firms, as the TPP envisages provisions that would restrict access to affordable generic drugs that are relied upon by millions of people in the emerging world. Some international health groups like <a href="http://www.msfaccess.org/spotlight-on/trans-pacific-partnership-agreement">Doctors Without Borders</a> have already voiced their strong opposition to TPP on the grounds that it would strengthen intellectual property laws in ways that could clearly restrict access to generic drugs in poor nations. 
 
In June this year, President Obama’s attempt to seek ‘fast-track’ trade-promotion authority (TPA)—the right to negotiate TPP and other trade agreements which Congress could then approve or reject, but not amend—faced stiff opposition from fellow Democrats, mostly on the ground that the pact would enhance transition of job opportunities from the US to its less costly TPP peer nations, especially those in Asia, while Obama’s political attorneys argued that ongoing rhetoric about the threat to America from low-wage manufacturing hubs is exaggerated and that killing TPP would not bring factory chimneys and steel mills back to the US. 
 While a lot of <keyword id="3108382" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Democrats-in-Congress">Democrats in Congress</keyword> oppose it largely due to the lack of transparency during the closed-door negotiations and possible threat to job security to some US workers, labour and environmental groups are sceptical and argue that TPP focuses more on increasing corporate profits than on protecting American jobs and wages. They also share the view that TPP would it make it easier for the US-based firms to move jobs offshore, substituting American workers for lower-paid foreign labour. 
 
Critics also say the US attempt to project TPP as a way to curb the rising power of China is questionable and counterproductive. TPP would be worth more if China is a part of it and America’s long-term interests are best served by incorporating the Asian giant into a rules-based economic system, they added.

Trans-Pacific Partnership: What lies beneath the rhetoric

Uber will announce a partnership with Spotify on Monday, <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/11/14/uber-said-to-announce-music-partnership-with-spotify/?smid=tw-nytimesbits">reports The New York Times' Mike Issac</a>.
The partnership will reportedly let Uber customers listen to music from their own Spotify playlists after they order and get in their vehicle.
The technical details of how Uber and Spotify intend to accomplish that feature remains unclear.
The news comes as some journalists received an invite to an Uber event featuring a yet-to-be-named guest
That event teased a "first-of-its-kind partnership." 
Spotify has been in the news lately, not always in a positive light. The streaming service has become embattled in a public dispute with Taylor Swift, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spotify-ceo-defends-how-much-the-streaming-service-pays-artists-2014-11">who recently removed her catalogue from Spotify</a> over allegations that she was underpaid.

REPORT: Uber To Announce Spotify Partnership

New Delhi, Jan 29 () India's largest IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Wednesday said its strategic partnership with ABN AMRO has been expanded to help the latter build a new, scalable technology core.
 This will help ABN AMRO, which is one of the largest banks in the Netherlands, to increase its innovation velocity and support its digital ambitions, a statement said.
 TCS has been a trusted partner for ABN AMRO for the last 15 years and has worked closely with the bank, it added.
 "Our aspiration is to build a future-proof bank powered by our people and partner ecosystem to create a long-term value for our customers. TCS as our growth and transformation partner is working closely with the bank in rejuvenating our IT landscape leveraging the synergy between IT business and operations," Christian Bornfeld, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer (Group COO) and Executive Board Member at ABN AMRO, said.

 IT firm Nucleus Software on Wednesday reported about 12 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 23.2 crore for the quarter ended December 31.
 The Noida-headquartered company's net profit stood at Rs 20.73 crore in the year-ago period, it said in a BSE filing.
 Its consolidated revenue from operations grew 6 per cent to Rs 130.33 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 122.93 crore in the year-ago period, it added.
