JioCinema resumes digital innings with India's tour of West Indies 2023

<p>As part of the acquisition, Facebook will form a Conversations group based in New York City. The plan is to "build Branch at Facebook scale."</p>
<p>Branch allows you to host conversations about anything and have them with anyone. </p>
<p>Branch, formerly known as Roundtable, first launched in 2011. In that time, the company raised a modest $2 million. </p>

Mastercard is betting big on acquisitions and partnerships for its noncard business

"If we see data usage of past few days in the country, I believe we may have surpassed data usage level by consumers in the US and China. People were paying earlier Rs 200 per GB for data and now they are getting 1 GB for around Rs 10. This is good for consumers," Sinha added.<br />
<br /> As per BSNL Chairman and MD <keyword id="2216779" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anupam-Shrivastava">Anupam Shrivastava</keyword>, they have installed around 5,000 wifi hotspots in partnership with two private companies, and would be investing Rs 600 crore this fiscal for next 35,000 wifi hotspots.<br />

"L&amp;T has won contract for rolling out 20,000 wifi hotspots and HFCL will install another 15,000 hotspots. We have provision for 100% expansion of wifi hotspots in next fiscal too but the cost will be less," Shrivastava said.<br />

"We have total capex plan of about Rs 4,300 crore for this fiscal. We are annually spending around Rs 4,000 crore in capex from our own resources. This does not include funds that we get from the government for other projects," he added.<br />

LinkedIn has also beefed up its publisher partnerships that help big name <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> companies <a href="http://www.newswhip.com/2016/11/top-publishers-linkedin-achieve-success/">like Forbes, Bloomberg and the New York Times </a>develop strategies for sharing content to the platform's more than 562 million users.</p><p>Today the Microsoft-owned property is unveiling a new ad unit called carousel ads. If the name sounds familiar, that's because it is. Facebook, Instagram <a href="https://marketingland.com/twitter-testing-carousel-ads-different-type-179624">and Twitter</a> all have their own versions of carousel ads for brands that want to show multiple products in a swipeable gallery.</p><p>According to LinkedIn, 300 brands have tested carousel ads that allow marketers to piece together up to 10 slides. In its initial tests, advertisers like Volvo Canada and RBC Wealth Management claim that the ads resulted in twice the response rates seen previously.</p><p>However, beyond just enticing people to interact, LinkedIn says the ads are meant to appeal to big brand marketers that use photos and videos for deeper storytelling than data-obsessed business-to-business brands that are focused on acquiring new customers through digital ads.</p><p>"This is a rich canvas for telling compelling stories," said Abhishek Shrivastava, LinkedIn's director of product. "You move someone from the very beginning of awareness to maybe consideration to asking them to submit a lead [form]."</p><h2>LinkedIn's bread and butter is still B2B marketing</h2><p>Take wealth management firm RBC Wealth Management, for example. The firm has been piloting carousel ads as part of a bigger campaign to promote an Asia-themed package of content, such as an article about what parents need to know <a href="https://www.rbcwealthmanagement.com/sg/en/research-insights/things-to-consider-when-sending-your-child-abroad-to-study/detail/?utm_id=wm1511358798993">before sending a child to study abroad in Asia. </a>The ad also linked to a page where consumers could fill out a form to download a research report about wealth management in Asia, which doubled click-through rates compared to the click-through rate for average LinkedIn ads.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LinkedIn</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The carousel ads "allowed us to showcase multiple content assets to a global and targeted audience," said Ashley Patterson, director of content and social at RBC Wealth Management. "We were able to optimize as we went."</p><h2>But the site is also courting big brands like Volvo</h2><p>While LinkedIn still caters to business-to-business marketers, "we see high-consideration B2C marketers doing well because a lot of things they look for in terms of a target audience happens to be on our platform," Shrivastava said.</p><p>One example of a high-consideration brand: Cars. People often spend months researching and visiting dealers before they settle on a new car. Plus, automakers are <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/Article/US-Auto-Industry-Middle-of-Robust-Digital-Ad-Spending-Growth/1014049">one of the top-spending</a> <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> verticals.</p><p>So, Volvo Canada decided to target its ads to people based on the seniority of their job position. Since April, brands and users can upload clips to their pages and accounts and then promote them with ads using LinkedIn's targeting tools.</p><p>According to Shrivastava, video is LinkedIn's "fastest-growing ad format" and averages a view-through rate of 30 percent, which measures how many people stop to watch a video as they scroll through the newsfeed. LinkedIn wants to be more than where you look for jobs - so it's taking a big page from Facebook's playbook

In other words, we are doing what any creatively-driven business must do in order to grow in a quality, sustainable way."</p><p>The company wouldn't say if it's hired a banker.</p><p>Venture backers have poured money into companies including BuzzFeed, Mic, Mashable, Refinery29, and Vox in the hopes that they could build a profitable media business by taking advantage of cheap audience scale afforded by social media and selling that audience to advertisers.</p><p>But the majority of digital display advertising has gone to Facebook and Google. Publishers have found it's tough to make native advertising profitable enough. And publishers have been challenged to reduce their reliance on advertising through sidelines like events, e-commerce, and subscriptions.</p><p>That hasn't worked well for some. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-publisher-mic-was-a-victim-of-facebook-canceling-its-news-show-and-more-shows-could-be-next-2018-11">Mic</a> and Mashable both sold in the past year for a fraction of the money they raised.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vox-media-is-giving-in-to-programmatic-ads-2017-9">Vox is giving in to the lure of selling programmatic ads</a></em></p><p>For its part, Vox Media was a high-flying publisher, having raised more than $300 million, including a $200 million investment in 2015 by NBCUniversal parent Comcast. It excited advertisers by pitching itself as a company that was reinventing the prestige publishing model for the web, with high-quality content that marketers crave on verticals like Vox.com, SB Nation, and Eater.</p><p>But despite growing its overall audience, several of Vox's verticals still qualify as niche, such as Vox.com and Eater, which would exclude them from many ad buys. Early this year, Vox laid off 50 people and was reported to miss its revenue target. It's diversified into podcasts, conferences, video, and software services by licensing its CMS, Chorus, to other publishers. It's also planning to explore consumer revenue.</p><h2>Vox's staff is big compared to its revenue</h2><p>Vox's revenue is <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/12/a-generation-of-digital-media-darlings-prepares-for-a-frigid-winter">reportedly projected to be $185 million </a>this year. But Vox has about 900 employees across eight verticals. Even at that revenue, the cost of paying all those salaries, plus rent and content production costs, would strain a company's ability to get in the black.</p><p>The company's statement underscores how challenged the media industry has become. From broadcasters to print, legacy to startup, various companies have been laying off staff and restructuring to meet the habits of digital consumers. It also follows chatter that several venture-backed digital media companies, once seen as disrupters forging a new online publishing model, are at various stages of pursuing a sale or combination with other companies.</p><p>Philippe von Borries, co-CEO of Refinery29, another venture-funded media company, also has acknowledged the possibility of a combination of media companies.</p><p>"There is definitely an opportunity for the leading companies to come together but it's a tough hurdle to clear chemistry, culture, and valuations," he said. The fund plans to take big bets on small public companies, according to the firm's LinkedIn page, with an activist tilt. </p><p>"We strive to collaborate with management teams and boards who are committed to driving long-term, fundamental value," the LinkedIn page reads. </p><p>"As lead shareholders, we support our portfolio by working from deeply researched facts, acting as discrete advisors or constructive board members, providing access to a network of relationships, and providing direct growth capital."</p><p><em><strong>See more: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-funds-and-private-equity-battling-over-each-others-talent-2019-6">The booming private market has some hedge funds spreading into private equity's domain. LinkedIn pages for Braner and Shrivastava show that they say the company started in March of this year. </p><p>This year has been a tough one for hedge fund launches <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-hedge-fund-launches-slowed-2019-2019-1">as the bar continues to rise</a> for investors looking to go out on their own. Rising technology and compliance costs, as well as pricey data packages, have limited the pool of new funds, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-hedge-fund-industrys-challenging-2019-by-the-numbers-2019-7">more hedge funds have called it quits in 2019 than have launched</a>. </p><p>Shrivastava and Braner worked together at Bain Capital from 1992 to 2003, their LinkedIn pages show, before Braner left to join JB Investment Partners as a partner. He then left for Sagard Capital, the private equity arm of Sagard Holdings, in 2005 and was joined by Shrivastava there in 2012. </p><p>The $400 million fundraising target, if reached, would mark one of the bigger launches this year. Former Bain and Sagard Capital partners are launching a small-cap-focused hedge fund

<br /> Indian IT players need to improve their capabilities either organically or through acquisitions to remain in the race of increasingly competitive marketing technology. The companies will also have to rebrand themselves as marketing consultants, said a report by <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword>. <br />

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Association+of+Software+and+Services+Companies+%28Nasscom%29+">National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom)</a> had said last year that marketing technology has the potential to be a $37 billion opportunity for Indian IT players. But nearly a fifth of that is in the purely creative space, an area where few Indian IT firms have the capabilities, reported ET.<br />

Global chief marketing officers rated in a survey that there was a need to have high creative skills high and perceived Indian players low on it. They are considered nascent providers in the marketing solution space, according to the report. However, it added that Indian IT players were rated highly on analytic skills.<br />

The report will be released in September. Nasscom is the latest to join a growing band that sees an acquisitive strategy necessary to crack this space. Some Indian IT companies have been building skills in-house. ET has reported that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=HCL+Technologies+">HCL Technologies</a> is expanding its in-house creative team.<br />
 <br /> "We have our own in-house creative team. "There is a need to build skills and talent in this space. Marketing technology is both a near-term and longterm opportunity for India IT players," said Sangeeta Gupta, senior VP at Nasscom. "But building internally takes time. Acquisitions are clearly an option."<br />

"Sound acquisition and partnership abilities across the ecosystem are critical to making digital work. Indian IT is tech-savvy, but much less partnership-savvy. In Digital, this partnership applies to market/product coverage, not just for costs (sub-contracting)," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=JPMorgan">JPMorgan</a> analyst Viju George said in a July note.<br />

The IT sector is soon going to swamp the marketing tech space

<br /> "This is the most crucial year in the history of BSNL, because 2017 will be the year when our salaries are going to be revised as a third PRC (Pay Review Committee), and let me tell you ... unless we are profitable the <keyword id="10876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="salary">salary</keyword> is not going to be revised," Shrivastava said. <br />

Speaking after launching BSNL Mobile Data Offload service in Karnataka, he said the organisation has to be made profitable.<br />

Pointing out that in the past Air India and ITI couldn't revise their salaries, Shrivastava said, "so 2017 is a very important year and we have to make sure that this year our profit and loss account looks good." "I have instructed all my IFA's that their prime duty is to look towards the revenue. Gone are the days when we were sitting and only signing on the on the file. No, revenue is your prime responsibility," he said. He said Karnataka Circle is not doing comparatively good, and he has got commitment from the senior officials that before March 31 they will make the circle "again profitable".<br />

BSNL after about four years of reporting losses posted an operating profit of Rs 672 crore for the financial year 2014-15 compared to an operating loss of Rs 691 crore in the previous fiscal. Calling 2014-15 as the turnaround year for BSNL as it came back to operational profit of Rs 672 crore, Shrivastava said with the support of all the officers and employees the company will increase the profit and within another two to three years (2018-19) it will achieve net profit also.<br />

He said, "it (operational profit) is of very great significance because our salary expense is whopping Rs 15,000 crore, which is more than the top line of many private and government PSUs."<br />

"... we are not only able to meet such huge staff expenses, but still we are left with enough cash to do the operations and maintain on our own and yet come up with a profit of Rs 672 crore. This is the thing we should be proud of, we are now not dependent on anybody," he added. <br />

No revision in salary next year unless BSNL is profitable: CMD Anupam Shrivastava

State-run BSNL is planning to extend <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satellite">satellite</keyword> phone services for all citizens in two years that can work at any corner of the country and remain immune to breakdown of mobile services during natural calamities, according.<br /><br />"We have applied to International Maritime Organisation. It will take some time to complete the process. In 18-24 months, we will be in a position to open satellite phones service for citizens in a phased manner," BSNL chairman and managing director <keyword id="2216779" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anupam-Shrivastava">Anupam Shrivastava</keyword> told PTI.<br /><br />Satellite phones will able to work in any part of the country, even inside flights and ships, as they depend on signals directly from satellites located about 35,700 kms above the earth.<br /><br />Traditional mobile networks cover around 25-30 kms around towers and can transmit signals to phones placed equal to or below the height of the tower.<br /><br />BSNL has started satellite phone service using INMARSAT service which will be initially offered to government agencies and later extended to citizens in a phased manner.<br /><br />The service will cover areas where no networks are present and be provided by INMARSAT which has 14 satellites.<br /><br />Agencies handling disasters, state police, railways, Border Security Force and other government agencies will be given the phones in the first phase.<br /><br />"The number of satellite phone connections in India is very little but once we open it for citizens, the whole dynamics in the market will change. The volumes will bring down the cost of service. We are charging only Re 1 over the cost that satellite firm will bill to us," <keyword id="713" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shrivastava">Shrivastava</keyword> said.<br /><br />Call rates on satellite phones are expected to be in the range of Rs 30-35 in the first phase when there are only about 4,600 connections in the country.<br /><br />"Satellite phones also cost Rs 40,000 and more. All the satellite phones are imported at present. Once we open it for citizens, the volumes will drive down the cost of calls as well as handset. Even, huge volume can attract satellite phone manufacturers to set-up their unit in India. We expect it to create a new ecosystem of satellite services in the country," Shrivastava said.<br /><br />Satellite phones in India are presently provided by <keyword id="6370462" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Communications">Tata Communications</keyword>, which inherited the licence from Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (now Tata <keyword id="4584578" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="communications-ltd">Communications Ltd</keyword>).<br /><br />The services of TCL will be phased out by June 30, 2017 and all the connections will be transferred to BSNL.<br /><br />There are 1,532 authorised satellite phone connections that can operate within the country and a majority of them are used by security forces. TCL has also issued 4,143 permits to maritime community for use of such phones at ships.<br /><br />There have been security concerns on use of satellite phones in India.<br /><br />Telecom regulator <keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRAI">Trai</keyword> has said there is a possibility that communication through such phones can be monitored by foreign agencies as their gateways are located outside India, it added.<br /><br />Defence forces did not opt for satellite phones from the foreign operators because of security and espionage concerns. Other security agencies have been demanding for a long time for establishment of a new gateway in the country which can support new generation handsets for land mobile connections.<br /><br />Shrivastava said that now satellite phone gateway has been set-up in India with legal interception and monitoring system (LIMS).<br /><br />"BSNL has set-up gateway with INMARSAT to address security concerns among government agencies. Now, there are no more issued related to security. We will start providing satellite services once our registration process is complete and necessary approvals are in place," Shrivastava said.

India to have its satellite phones soon

The app is only available on Samsung phones (no iPhones, etc.), as well as on the web and Samsung smart TVs.</p><p>But now the company wants to throw its weight behind a different service, <a href="http://variety.com/2016/digital/news/milk-music-shutdown-samsung-tidal-1201722905/">sources tell Variety</a>, and there seems to be no place for Milk.</p><p>What service could Samsung be after?</p><p>After Jay Z was spotted at Samsung's offices in October, there has been speculation that Tidal, his streaming service that recently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-and-rihanna-download-bump-for-tidal-going-away-2016-2">snagged exclusives</a> from Rihanna and Kanye West, could be an acquisition target. </p><p>Tidal's fortunes have turned back and forth in the past few months. The company has seen <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jay-zs-music-streaming-service-tidal-has-reportedly-fired-its-cfo-2016-3">high executive turnover</a>, but it still <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-wests-the-life-of-pablo-album-drives-tidal-downloads-2016-2">charged up the download charts</a> thanks to exclusives like Kanye West's album "The Life of Pablo," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-and-rihanna-download-bump-for-tidal-going-away-2016-2">before sliding down again</a>.</p><p>But sources <a href="http://variety.com/2016/digital/news/milk-music-shutdown-samsung-tidal-1201722905/">warned Variety</a> that Tidal might be asking for too high a price, and that perhaps a partnership might be more likely than an acquisition. If Samsung is exploring partnerships, and not an acquisition, that could also widen the field of potential streaming services. It's also worth noting that Samsung and Jay Z have worked together in the past, with the rapper giving away 1 million copies of his album "Magna Carta Holy Grail" to Samsung Galaxy phone owners back in 2013.</p><p>But regardless, Milk Music's days seem numbered.
