While wealth management clients skew older, the division has a pipeline of rich millennial founders who work with the investment banking arm. Boals Moeller said these clients in their 30s and 40s are more likely to want more than investment advice, desiring services like concierge healthcare and bill pay that make their lives easier. To keep these clients loyal, she leads an initiative to cater to younger clients, including heirs and self-made entrepreneurs, and another that focuses on women customers."They're busy. They want simplicity. They need good people around them to help," she said.During the dealmaking drought, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-private-wealth-management-asset-david-solomon-2023-1">wealth management</a> business gained new prominence. "Quite frankly, private wealth management at Goldman Sachs has never been as much of a focus for the firm as it is today," division cohead John Mallory told BI in 2023.Boals Moeller said the business's current stature is the result of investments more than a decade in the making. She served as chief of staff to wealth management head Tucker York during the financial crisis. Around 2010, she embarked on a listening tour of every wealth office. The advisor feedback led to the bank expanding its offerings beyond investment and tax planning advice."We knew this going way back, and it certainly continues today, which is we are not purely an investment solution for our clients," she said. "Investments are critical and core to our work, but increasingly we're seeing that with the next generation of wealth owners today, they are seeking simplicity and solutions in all aspects of their life."Goldman Sachs' family office offering, Apex, launched a few years later. Now, the division offers chief financial officer services to help clients with not just estate planning but also lifestyle services like cybersecurity.Catering to these younger clients, whether they are old-money heirs or startup founders celebrating their first windfall, requires meeting them where they are. That usually isn't over a steak and martini lunch or 18 holes at the golf course. What entices these clients more, Boals Moeller said, is getting to meet like-minded people.Goldman Sachs holds events and conferences, often with star-studded lineups or in scenic locales. In August, Boals Moeller hosted a reception in Atlanta with singer Ciara and Marc-Kwesi Farrell, the founder of a rum brand that provided custom cocktails. In October 2023, Goldman Sachs hosted a conference in Deer Valley where billionaire Patrón founder John Paul DeJoria talked about keeping a business empire in the family. Sustainability and sports are particularly interesting to this demographic, with Goldman Sachs hosting a tour of a waste-to-clean-energy power plant in Copenhagen and bringing in Michelle Hynik, president of women's football club Utah Royals, to the Deer Valley summit.Advisors also introduce clients to each other when appropriate, such as a pre-IPO founder to an entrepreneur who has already been through the process."A lot of effort is put into helping people not only just manage the risk and obviously the investment side of things, but also the broader piece, which is how do we help you have an amazing corporate outcome from the sale of your business, and how do we help you as a family appropriately prepare for that?" she said.Advisors can meet with families one-on-one for financial education. However, many of these millennial and Gen-Z clients prefer digital education on their own time. Goldman Sachs has courses for children of clients as early as 15 years old. To land these desirable clients before their big windfall, Morgan Stanley has partnered with Carta, a platform for startups and investors to track company ownership, Business Insider has learned.Silicon Valley firms widely use Carta's financial software for tasks like issuing stock options and administering executive compensation. With this new partnership, Carta will refer clients looking to go public to Morgan Stanley at Work, a division that caters to businesses and their employees. Carta told BI it has nearly 2,000 clients that have raised up to a series C and are on the pathway to IPO. "The likelihood of the pipeline materializing is higher than it has been in a very long time," the bank's wealth boss, Jed Finn, said in an exclusive interview. He said investors have been waiting to cash out and favorable conditions are on the horizon, such as the future Trump administration cutting red tape for megamergers.Morgan Stanley uses workplace services like employee financial advice and executive compensation to get clients in the door while they're building wealth and hopefully convert them into fee-paying financial advisory customers. Over the past three years, the $6 trillion wealth business has added $250 billion in assets from individuals who started either as workplace or brokerage clients. This partnership is part of Morgan Stanley's effort to reach $10 trillion in client assets between the wealth arm and its smaller $1.6 trillion investment management unit.Since companies are staying private longer and growing larger before going public, their employees are more likely to need financial advice before and after a mammoth IPO, Finn said. Potential dilemmas include whether to put their shares in a trust or how to diversify their newfound wealth."We're uniquely situated to be able to address that complexity and to provide the advice these employees need as the companies embark on their next wave of growth," he said.<h2 id="acbbb492-dd88-44fa-85c7-3862302f80a4">How it works</h2>The referral deal fills gaps for Morgan Stanley and Carta. It gives the bank access to a broader customer base of private companies than its in-house stock planning administrator, Shareworks, and allows Carta customers to go public with less hassle. Carta stopped <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-unicorn-carta-eliminating-equity-software-public-companies-2023-3">managing employee equity for public companies</a> last year, but now customers can swiftly transport their data from Carta to Shareworks before they go public and stay on the platform after their IPO."This really works for making it easier for Carta clients to get that second part of their existence, the public part, in the hands of somebody who has the experience to deliver it," Finn said. Sure, I’ll have more responsibilities, but I’ll also have someone to share them with. According to reports, the young wrestler handed her official accreditation card to her sister, who was caught by security while leaving the Games Village. It has been edited for length and clarity.My partner of six years is monogamous, while I'm non-monogamous. I've learned that both people don't have to be monogamous or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mom-dating-apps-interested-men-non-monogamous-open-relationships-2024-10">non-monogamous</a> to make a relationship work.I met my partner Seth at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burning-man-experience-biggest-misconceptions-2023-9">Burning Man</a> in 2018. We were in the same camp of about 120 people. One night, we were at our campground after dinner. There was music playing, and we both found ourselves walking to the middle of the dance floor to introduce ourselves. We talked for 15 minutes and then decided to hang out that night. We had a very instant connection. I remember after we hung out, his friend asked him, "Why didn't you tell me about your girlfriend?" He said, "Oh, because I just met her 15 minutes ago." As cliché as it sounds, it felt like we'd known each other for a long time.<h2 id="e4e19f90-626e-4464-9013-c7a7b8557a7b">I brought up non-monogamy early on</h2>The second night after we met at Burning Man, I told Seth I was non-monogamous. Two weeks later, he came to visit me in New York, and then two weeks after that, I went to visit him in San Francisco. We did <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/long-distance-marriage-lessons-distance-doesnt-work-2024-8">long-distance</a> for nine months, before Seth moved to New York in 2019.About a month into our long-distance relationship, he asked me if I wanted to be his girlfriend. I thought it was cute that he asked and said, "Yes." I realized that for him, being his girlfriend meant being exclusive. So I asked him, "Does this mean I can't have sex with other people?" He said, "Yep, that's what it means." We discussed it further, and he said that he was not ready for me to date other people yet.Around six months into the relationship, he said it was OK for me to have sex with other people, but only with people I'd already had sex with before I met him, only with people that had a partner, and only when he was away since we were long distance. A little over a year into the relationship, we got to my ideal stage of me being able to date whomever I wanted more regularly. For my dates, we started off with once a month, then once every couple of weeks. Now I have freedom, but we'll still have a conversation if needed.The first time I went on a date with someone else, I could tell Seth was jealous and having a hard time. I would come home wanting to connect with him either because being with someone else served as a reminder of how great Seth is, or I would have a very fun experience, sexually or otherwise, with my date and want to replicate that experience with him. But Seth found it strange that I'd want to connect with him after a date and would act a little distant at first. When we talked about it, he shared that it took him more time to shake off the feeling that I had just come back from a date with someone else.We have a partial "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" system when it comes to my dates. While he knows I went on a date, I don't share details about the date and occasionally, I'll pretend like it didn't happen. However, if he knows the person I'm dating, he's always been open to allowing them over for an event or even attending an event where he knows they'll be there. I may not share much about my dates, but it's nice that he's open to meeting the people I date.<h2 id="c2ca1765-66bc-4a4d-adc7-eed804cbdf02">My partner has the option to be non monogamous if he wants</h2>Seth isn't interested in a romantic or sexual connection with anyone else and hasn't been for the past six years of our relationship, but he has the option to do so if he ever wants to. While I feel recharged by being with other people, Seth is an introvert who feels <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/going-on-solo-trips-without-kids-parents-take-turns-2024-10">recharged by being on his own</a>. I think his introversion is why he's OK with our dynamic. When I come back from spending time with others, we both feel recharged and ready to reconnect.I decided to share our dynamic with my mom's side of the family. I'll tell my mom about a date I went on, and she'll say, "Don't let Seth hear you." I just tell her, "Mom, it's OK; Seth knows." My mom really likes Seth and doesn't want me to harm our relationship by seeing other people. I didn't tell my dad about the details of our connection until more recently, not out of fear or judgment, but because sex and relationships are not topics I'd ever previously spoken to him about.Even though I'm non-monogamous, there are temporary periods, usually about four months, when I'm monogamous. Being non-monogamous adds to my life the ability to feel <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biological-reasons-youre-attracted-to-someone-2018-10">attraction and connection</a> to a person and pursue it.
