<ul><li>The <keyword id="6355014" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> has given the green light for the <keyword id="97393" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competition-Commission-of-India">Competition Commission of India</keyword> (CCI) to conduct its investigation against WhatsApp and Facebook.</li><li>The CCI contends that excessive data collection and sharing between the two social media giants could be harmful to the competition environment.</li><li>Facebook’s argument that an investigation could not be conducted against it because WhatsApp is a subsidiary was also rejected.</li></ul>India’s competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), has gotten the green light from Delhi’s High Court to proceed with its investigation against WhatsApp and its parent company Facebook. The two Mark Zuckerberg-owned enterprises have been under the spotlight ever since WhatsApp launched its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/whatsapp-says-your-privacy-wont-be-affected-if-you-dont-use-these-features/articleshow/80225748.cms">new privacy policy</a> in January 2021. The two tech giants took CCI to court saying that a fresh investigation is not needed as there were already pending cases against the privacy policy in the <keyword id="6354977" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>. According to the bench headed by Justice Navin Chawla that is not reason enough to quash the CCI’s investigation. The actual issue is around excessive data sharing creating a monopolistic market. The competition watchdog contends that WhatsApp is using its dominant position in the market to force users to share information with its parent company, Facebook. And, this ‘excessive’ data collection will get in the way of maintaining a healthy competitive environment. New players, who may want to enter the market, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/whatsapps-new-privacy-policy-doesnt-give-you-choice-and-could-limit-your-options-in-the-future-too/articleshow/82063830.cms">will not be able to operate that the same scale.</a> For now, the CCI is free to go ahead with its investigation. WhatsApp and Facebook get snubbed by the Delhi High Court that allowed India’s competition regulator to probe Mark Zuckerberg’s companies

Indian short-video making apps like <keyword id="6393600" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Josh">Josh</keyword>, <keyword id="8678883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="moj">Moj</keyword>, <keyword id="9555198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MX-TakaTak">MX Takatak</keyword> and <keyword id="2368386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Roposo">Roposo</keyword> have brought back 97 per cent of TikTok user base in the country onto their platforms, largely from small cities and towns, a new report showed on Thursday. Indian short-form apps have also successfully retained 67 per cent of the TikTok era users and have onboarded around 30-35 per cent new users over the past year. This has been a result of increased supplier push and aggressive marketing by platforms, according to the latest report by Bengaluru-based RedSeer Consulting. "Daily active users (DAUs) increased upto 97 per cent of June 2020 levels as a result of aggressive marketing and user acquisition by platforms. However, the time spent on the other hand has gradually increased, reaching 55 per cent of June 2020 levels," the report mentioned. Josh leads both on influencer and user-end driven by strong performance in the Hindi belt and Tier-2+ cities. Moj, has been a strong gainer across consumer and business metrics, when compared to the last quarter. "On the other hand, Roposo has shown strong performance in Tier-1 cities compared to the smaller ones," said the report. MX <keyword id="7638068" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Takatak">Takatak</keyword> lead in the net promoter score (NPS) in the metro cities. The platform has held challenges and hashtag events similar to TikTok, to gain market share. Overall, 60-62 per cent of the shortform users are from tier 2+ cities. While Indian platforms have come a long way in the last few months, they have more scope to improve their content quality and product experience. The study shows that 75 per cent current short-form video users will likely stick to these domestic apps and are unlikely to switch back to Chinese apps even if the ban was lifted. "In less than one year post-Tik Tok ban, Indian platforms have shown a strong V-shaped recovery, bouncing back to 100 per cent of pre ban daily user base," said Ujjwal Chadhury, associate partner at RedSeer Consulting. But the job is far from done. "The players still have to reach the global and cross sector benchmarks on engagement and retention- which will further grow the monetisation potential for the entire ecosystem," Chadhury added. With strong network effects, the user base is growing fast, fuelling ecosystem growth, leading to a large monetisation potential for both influencers and platforms. Elite influencers with more than 10 million followers have a monthly earning of around $20,000-40,000. "Influencers with 1 million followers can earn upto $1000-2.500 while budding creators with less than 1 million followers can earn $40-200," the report said. Josh, Moj, Roposo and other short video apps lap up 97% of TikTok's user base in India

<ul><li>Instead of allowing vaccine makers to charge customers different prices for the same vaccine, the government could offer subsidy for those who need it the most via direct cash transfer.</li><li>Allowing different prices offers an incentive to move the stock of vaccines to the buyers who pay more i.e. private hospitals.</li><li>That may leave a lot of poorer Indians waiting in queues for a long time to get their share of the jabs.</li><li>Even with direct cash transfer, there may be a need to cap prices and to declare hoarding as a criminal act to ensure that the kind of leakage seen in ration shops is not replicated in vaccines as well. </li><li>There are arguments against direct benefit transfer as well. </li></ul>The new prices for COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield, has triggered a debate in India. Some argue that the prices are too high for everyone to be able to afford, and some say that it should be free for all and the government should bear the cost. The government already has a lot of expenses piling up as it manages the pandemic, and hence, there are also those who see merit in arguing that those who can pay for the vaccine, must pay for it. However, there is a problem with letting private and for-profit companies charge different prices from different customers. By allowing vaccine makers to choose the pricing based on who is buying the vaccine, the government may give the producer an incentive to direct more vaccines to the more expensive private hospitals, whereas a majority of the country still depends on state-run facilities. “Pricing should be uniform. Both the central and state governments should pay the same price for the vaccine. The government should also cap the price of the vaccine sold at private hospitals. Even the administrative charges should be capped. Otherwise a family of four may end up paying a lot for vaccination,” Doctor Sanjeev Bagai, Chairman and Managing Director of the New Delhi-based Nephron clinic told Business Insider. “Direct benefit transfer is also an option. However, decades of similar policy experiments have taught us that such agreements are inefficient and provide a fertile ground for corrupt practices. The failure of such mechanisms gave birth to the idea of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). It could be deployed here as well, given that patients coming in for vaccination are already being asked to submit their Aadhaar (unique identity number) details. Vaccine makers should charge the same price from all customers. Those who access it via government agencies, or any other filter as may be applicable, should be allowed to get the subsidy reimbursed to their bank account. This has been effectively used in transferring other subsidies like the ones for cooking gas and fertilisers. The government’s own estimate is that it has saved over ₹1.78 lakh crore ($25 billion) in subsidy leakage because of DBT. The argument against direct benefit transfer There are two arguments here against direct benefit transfer. One from R Ramakumar, Professor at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, who wants vaccines to be free for all as it is in countries like US, UK and China. The other argument is from Dr Arvind Virmani, an economist and the former Chief Economic Advisor to the government of India, who wants drug prices to be decontrolled totally and do a direct cash transfer on a larger scale and not limit it to vaccines alone. “Supply chain has to be developed. It can’t be done overnight. The data on production and sale of vaccines is transparently available from the producers, for the government, Astrazeneca and others to see. To introduce DBT now, it would mean taking out funding from other budgeted activities like infrastructure construction. Right now, vaccination is working smoothly. Don’t disrupt it,” he told Business Insider. Aside from the fact this may add a bureaucratic layer, Ramakumar’s contention is that by allowing state-run facilities to charge less, and private hospitals to charge more, there is an incentive of corruption in distribution. India already has decades of bad experience. from the public distribution system a.k.a the ration shops, where the subsidised stock is moved out to be sold at a higher price. A cap on prices, and a crackdown on hoarders by making it a criminal act, may be necessary to counter this, even with reimbursement of the vaccine cost via direct transfer to bank accounts. Virmani’s take is that there is a case to be made for both deregulating drug prices, as well as direct cash transfer for a variety of reasons, in India but that can’t be debated in the middle of a pandemic. “All drugs are controlled. We should be discussing decontrol of drugs. That’s not the problem right now. For the last 12 months, I have been saying you can create a direct cash transfer in 4 months. It should still be considered,” he added. The process is voluntary for now, but will be made mandatory once the next financial year kicks in. When it comes to the environment, they’re required to disclose the amount of energy consumed, water usage, and how sustainable are the input materials being used. And, when investors are looking for companies that will survive any economic upheavals — like a pandemic or natural calamities — they look at the companies’ ESG score. People who track the space say that the process of cross-checking isn’t in full force yet. “ESG investing faces its own set of challenges, the primary one is a lack of quality data. In our experience the lack of data has been not because companies don’t have good sustainability practices, it’s just that the disclosures are lacking,” said <a href="https://www.morningstar.in/posts/62487/esg-funds-available-india.aspx">Morning Star</a> in its report. Even so, the trend of investing in the right places, even if compliance checks come in later in a step in the right direction. “ESG is great for now, let’s see how it’s actually implemented, how companies actually comply with it over the course of the next four-five years. That’s sufficient time for actually making a lot of improvements,” said Vibhaw.
