Kevan Parekh and the rise of Indian-origin leaders in multinational companies

New Delhi: After two <keyword id="19945688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="acquisitions" source="keywords">acquisitions</keyword> this year, India's second-largest IT services company <keyword id="19906778" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Infosys" meta.hostid="268" meta.entityid="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> is on the lookout to scoop-up more firms and says the acquisition matching scale of recent in-tech buy is certainly a possibility. In an interview to PTI, <keyword id="24144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infosys-ceo" source="Orion">Infosys CEO</keyword> <keyword id="20115570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salil-parekh" source="keywords">Salil Parekh</keyword> said the company is keen on acquisitions in areas like data analytics, SAAS, and may look at some geographies within Europe, and the US. Asked if more acquisitions could be of the scale matching in-tech, which came with a price-tag of 450 million euros, <keyword id="20039787" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parekh" source="keywords">Parekh</keyword> said, "Absolutely, I think those would be the size that we will look at in terms of scale, and given our structure we could do a few of those." Back in January, Infosys announced a definitive agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the equity share capital in InSemi Technology Services, a semiconductor design services company headquartered in India, for a consideration (including earn-outs, and management incentives and retention bonuses) totalling up to Rs 280 crore. A bigger acquisition followed in three months. In April, Infosys Germany, a wholly-owned step-down subsidiary, entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the equity share capital in in-tech Holding -- leading provider of engineering R&amp;D services headquartered in Germany -- for a consideration of up to 450 million euros (about Rs 4,045 crore). "We have very good business in engineering services already within Infosys and then we did those two acquisitions, both of them in engineering services, one on semiconductor side and one on the automotive side... very strong businesses, and we feel quite good about expanding that footprint," Parekh said. Infosys is eyeing more acquisitions, he said, adding that the company is evaluating several firms. "We have a good balance sheet and good cash generation and now we are quite comfortable with the integration of acquisition in different areas. We have done engineering services, we will look at other areas... for example data analytics... may look at SAAS (software as a service) areas, and maybe at some other geographies in Europe, maybe the US as well," he said. Parekh, however, said a lot depends on strategic synergies, financial cost, cultural fit and integration aspects. "We are continuing to look, and we have things that are normally in the pipeline but those take their own time... there are a lot of discussions on strategic fit, on financial cost of it and cultural fit into the company and then how will we integrate them. Many of those discussions are ongoing and we will see what comes out," the Infosys top honcho said. On whether he is hopeful of closing more acquisitions this fiscal year, Parekh indicated that it is tough to put a timeline on the outcome of ongoing discussions. "It is difficult to say... we are evaluating several (of them). But to get a fit on the strategic parameters, financial parameters, culture, integration... all of it may not work out. But these two (InSemi and in-tech) happened relatively quickly... before that for some quarters we had not done anything. It is not a predictable thing, but the evaluation is ongoing," he said. According to the Grant Thornton Bharat Dealtracker Q2 2024 report, Indian dealmaking saw overall 501 deals, valued at USD 21.4 billion. The report said the second quarter of 2024 witnessed the highest quarterly volumes since the second quarter of 2022, while values declined due to the absence of big-ticket merger and acquisition transactions. Grant Thornton Bharat Dealtracker further said the merger and acquisition (M&amp;A) activity during the second quarter saw 132 deals worth USD 6.2 billion, marking a slight increase in volumes but a substantial 50 per cent drop in values. As per the report, domestic deals drove growth with volumes rising 29 per cent and values increasing 2.5 times compared to the first quarter of the current year. In contrast, cross-border deals experienced a decline, with volumes decreasing 24 per cent and values plummeting 85 per cent from the first quarter of 2024.

Now, Infosys is making headlines again but this time, for the right reasons. The company has reportedly sent a confirmation regarding joining date to over 1,000 engineering graduates. Infosys sent emails to these graduates on Monday, confirming that they would start their employment on October 7, 2024. <h2>Infosys sends joining date confirmation to freshers</h2>Thousands of students from the April 2022 batch were left in limbo after participating in two rounds of pre-training in July and August. These students received an offer letter from Infosys two years back, but never got a confirmation about their joining date. Now, as per a report in ET, Infosys has finally given them a date of joining. The report reveals that students got an email from the company's recruiters that says, “Your scheduled date of joining the employment of the Company will be October 07,2024. Your location for employment is MYSORE, India." <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112516510" title="'Work-life balance is a myth’: Photo of man working in front of momo stall goes viral, Internet reacts" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>Won't hesitate to protest in front of offices: Nites president</h2>The report added that Harpreet Singh Saluja, president of the <keyword id="20025930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nascent-information-technology-employees" source="keywords">Nascent Information Technology Employees</keyword> Senate (NITES), reacted to the news. “I am thrilled to announce that after relentless efforts and a formal complaint by Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), Infosys has finally issued appointment letters to more than 1,000 (still counting) campus hires today. These young engineers, who have been waiting for nearly two years, now have a confirmed joining date of October 7, 2024. This is a huge win for NITES and all the students who stood strong in the face of uncertainty and delay,” he said and added that they won't hesitate to protest in front of the company's offices if there is a breach in joining date. "We remain vigilant... if Infosys fails to honor this commitment and breaches the joining date, we will not hesitate to organize a protest right in front of the Infosys office," he said. The delay in onboarding has affected around 2,000 engineering graduates from the 2022 batch, who received offer letters for system engineer and digital system engineer roles, with annual packages ranging from Rs 3.2-3.7 lakh. Many of these students have faced prolonged joblessness and anxiety as they waited for their joining dates. <h2>Infosys CEO reassures students</h2>Meanwhile, Infosys CEO <keyword id="20115570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Salil-Parekh" source="keywords">Salil Parekh</keyword> recently reassured graduates that the company would honor all job offers, despite delays in the onboarding process. Parekh had confirmed that while some joining dates had been adjusted, every candidate who received an offer would still become a part of Infosys. In a statement to PTI, he was quoted saying, "Every offer that we have given, that offer will be honored, and those individuals will join Infosys. We have adjusted some dates, but beyond that, there is no change in our approach." Infosys CEO Salil Parekh joins USISPF Board

US President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword> has nominated Indian-origin global venture capitalist <keyword id="753877" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Deven-Parekh" source="Orion">Deven Parekh</keyword> to the Board of Directors of the International Development Finance Corporation for a fresh term of three years. Parekh is a Managing Director at <keyword id="7496169" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insight-partners" source="Orion">Insight Partners</keyword>, a growth equity investment fund based in New York City. By statute, the Development Finance Corporation Board of Directors includes four members recommended to the President from Senate and House leadership. Parekh is the nominee recommended by the Senate Majority Leader, the <keyword id="6356037" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="white-house" source="Orion">White House</keyword> said in a statement. Since joining Insight in 2000, Parekh has made more than 140 investments in enterprise software, data, and consumer internet businesses globally, including in North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Australia. In addition to his work at Insight and for the Development Finance Corporation, Parekh serves as a Board Member for the Council on Foreign Relations, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, NYU Langone, the Tisch New York MS Research Center, and the Economic Club of New York. He has previously served on the Board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the Advisory Board of the US Export-Import Bank, and a Technical Advisory Council of the Federal Communications Commission. In 2021, Parekh received the Robert F Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award. He is also a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute. Prior to joining Insight, Parekh was a Principal at Berenson Minella &amp; Company, a New York-based merchant banking firm, where he served on the M&amp;A Committee. He also worked for Blackstone on M&amp;A and other investment activities. Parekh has a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. According to deal data analysed by <keyword id="131240" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="grant-thornton" source="Orion">Grant Thornton</keyword>, a total of 30 private equity deals were executed in the sector, cumulatively valued at $566 million in the September quarter of 2023. Among these transactions, fintech claimed the spotlight with a 30% share in terms of deal volumes, even though sequentially value and volume showed a dip. However, banks and non-banks ruled the charts with respect to values, contributing a 77% share in overall investments. Vastu is a digitally enabled retail affordable housing finance company with a pan-India presence. Vastu currently has an AUM of $900 million and serves 15 states across India in 200+ markets. While it did beat street expectations of around 1% growth, the Bengaluru-based tech major also slashed the upper end of its constant currency revenue guidance for FY24. The company has also announced wage hikes which will be rolled out from November 1, 2023. The company’s dollar revenues sequentially grew 2.2% to $4,718 million in Q2 as compared to $4,617 million in Q1. It had earlier guided that its constant currency (CC) revenues for FY24 will grow at 1-3.5%. Half way through the fiscal year, it believes that it can grow anywhere between 1-2.5%. It has however retained its operating margin guidance 20-22% for the year. The net profit grew by 4.5% sequentially to ₹6,212 crore in Q2 from ₹5,945 crore in the last quarter. He added that technically the last minute fall in prices shows that results were not in favour of bulls and hence a gap down opening between ₹1,400-1,420 could be seen in the opening trade.
