In a statement, <keyword id="6356834" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-oil-corporation" source="Orion">Indian Oil Corporation</keyword> (IOC) said its board has given "Stage-1 approval for setting up <keyword id="49809" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="paradip" source="Orion">Paradip</keyword> petrochemical complex at Paradip, Odisha at an estimated cost of Rs 61,077 crore." "This mega project will be the largest-ever investment of Indian Oil at a single location," it said but did not give timelines for completion of the project. This is a part of its transition plan including boosting petrochemical intensity to help protect against volatility. Petrochemical intensity refers to the percentage of crude oil that is converted directly into chemicals that are used to make plastic and other material. Crude oil, pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed, is processed in refineries to make petrol, diesel and other fuel. It can be processed to make petrochemicals, bypassing the fuels. IOC's petrochemical intensity - the percentage of crude oil converted into chemicals- is low at 5-6 per cent currently. The company intends to take it up to 10-12 per cent. The firm's newer refineries at <keyword id="6360136" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="panipat" source="Orion">Panipat</keyword> in Haryana and Paradip in Odisha have the petrochemical intensity of 15-20 per cent which would be raised to 25 per cent, its chairman <keyword id="5281441" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shrikant-madhav-vaidya" source="Orion">Shrikant Madhav Vaidya</keyword> had told PTI in an interview last month. Energy transition refers to the shift from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption - including oil, natural gas and coal - to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, as well as lithium-ion batteries. This shift is likely to gradually cut demand for petrol and diesel and so in preparation of that IOC is doing petrochemical projects. The company said the petrochemical complex at Paradip would include a world-scale cracker unit along with downstream process units for producing several petrochemical products including polypropylene (PP), high density polyethylene (<keyword id="178943" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdpe" source="Orion">HDPE</keyword>), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and poly vinyl chloride (PVC) - these being building blocks of different grades of plastics. It shall also facilitate production of niche chemicals and petrochemicals like phenol and isopropyl alcohol. "This mega project shall significantly improve the petrochemical intensity index of IndianOil. It shall be a growth driver in making the company a major player in the petrochemical industry, while strengthening India's self-reliance in the petrochemical sector," he said. The project, the statement said, will catalyze the growth of PCPIR and Plastic Park at Paradip. "On commissioning of this project, domestically available Petrochemicals are expected to provide feed and vitalise industrial growth in key downstream industries like plastic, pharma, agrochemical, personal care, paints etc. It is also expected to create employment opportunities in eastern India, especially Odisha," it added. Indian Oil to invest ₹61,077 crore in a petchem complex at Paradip in Odisha

He also pointed out that after many many years, the major ports have recorded a higher annual growth than that of non-major ports. Non-major ports are administered by state governments. Many state governments have given such ports on lease to private partners. "So, this year (2022-23), major ports achieved an overall growth of 10.4 per cent, while non-major ports achieved a growth 1.5 to 2 per cent less than this," he said. While the share of major ports in the total cargo was 54 per cent and non-major ports was 46 per cent in FY22, Pant said in FY23, the share of major ports rose to 55 per cent and that of non-major ports fell to 45 per cent. "So even 1 per cent shift is a very significant achievement for major ports, because despite so many challenges, they have increased their share by 1 per cent ," he said. Pant also said the inland waterways increased their cargo handling by 16 per cent to 126 million tonne in 2022-23 from 109 million tonne in 2021-22. He said the turnaround time in major ports has reduced by 3-4 hours to 48-49 hours. India's major ports handled highest ever cargo at 795 million tonne in FY23

New Delhi, Dec 18 () After creating ripples in the domestic refining sector, state-owned Indian Oil Corporation's (IOC) state-of-the-art INDMAX refining technology has been selected by a Serbian oil and gas company for production of higher value products from crude oil.
 The first-ever overseas agreement to licence the refinery process technology for high propylene production was signed between Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) of Serbia and Lummus Technology Inc, USA, in the presence of IOC Chairman Sanjiv Singh and S S V Ramakumar, director (R&amp;D) at Belgrade, Serbia, according to a company statement.
 "This breakthrough has opened up new vistas for expanding the global footprint of the 'Make in India' product," it said.
 It said INDMAX refining technology, with Lummus Technology Inc as the global licensing partner, has been selected through a global tender by NIS.
 NIS is one of the largest vertically integrated oil and gas companies in Southeast Europe, with the Russian oil and gas conglomerate, Gazprom Neft (GPN), as its major shareholder.
 "The selection of INDMAX technology was preceded by a rigorous due-diligence process involving demonstration of the credentials of the novel FCC (fluidised catalytic cracking) technology that is successfully operating at the 4.17 million tonnes per annum INDMAX unit at IOC's Paradip refinery since December 2015," the statement said.
 IOC's R&amp;D centre developed INDMAX in-house to enhance refinery profit margins by achieving high yields of liquefied petroleum gas, light olefins and high-octane gasoline from residual petroleum hydrocarbon streams and fractions.
 The efficacy of the technology was first demonstrated by setting up a 1 lakh tonnes per annum unit at the company's Guwahati refinery in 2003.
 This was followed by the mega INDMAX unit at Paradip Refinery in 2015, which placed IOC in the league of world-class refinery process licensors. A third INDMAX unit of 0.74 million tonnes per annum is under commissioning at IOC's Bongaigaon Refinery. ANZ HRS

New Delhi, Feb 9 () The country's 12 major ports recorded a marginal 1.14 per cent growth in cargo volumes at 585.72 million tonne (MT) during April-January period of the current fiscal, according to the Indian Ports Association (IPA).The ports had handled 579.10 MT of cargo during the corresponding period of the last fiscal.India has 12 major ports -- Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V.O. Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia).While the handling of iron ore saw 39.02 per cent jump to 45.05 MT during the period, thermal coal shipments declined 14.98 per cent to 74.60 MT, the IPA data showed.The 12 ports had handled 32.37 MT of iron ore and 87.74 MT of coal during April-January period of the previous fiscal.Handling of coking and other coal rose 1.10 per cent to 47.08 MT during the ten months as compared to 46.57 MT in the year-ago period.Finished fertiliser volumes jumped 21.55 per cent but raw fertiliser volumes dipped 2.80 per cent.Containers recorded a growth of 2.65 per cent in terms of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).According to the figures, Deendayal port handled the highest traffic volume at 101.96 MT during April-January 2019-20, followed by Paradip at 93.38 MT, Visakhapatnam at 60.73 MT, JNPT at 56.64 MT, Kolkata (including Haldia) at 53 MT, and Mumbai at 51.34 MT.Chennai port handled 39.80 MT of cargo, while New Mangalore handled 30.91 MT. Cargo volume at 12 major ports up marginally at 586 MT in Apr-Jan

New Delhi, Dec 8 () Cargo volume handled by the country's top 12 ports was marginally up by 0.34 per cent at 463.07 million tonnes during the April-November period this year, according to the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
 The ports had handled 461.48 MT of cargo during the corresponding period of the last fiscal. The ports are Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V.O. Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia).
 While the handling of iron ore saw a 30.24 per cent jump to 33.95 MT to during the period, thermal coal shipments declined by 17.82 per cent to 58.17 MT, the IPA data showed.
 The 12 ports had handled 26.07 MT of iron ore and 70.79 MT of coal during the April-November period of the previous fiscal.
 Handling of coking and other coal rose by 1.95 per cent to 37.17 MT during the eight months as compared with 36.45 MT of coking coal handled in the corresponding period last fiscal.
 Finished fertiliser volumes jumped 24.08 per cent during the period but raw fertiliser volumes declined by 3.12 per cent.
 Containers recorded a growth of 3.36 per cent in terms of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
 According to the figures, Deendayal port handled the highest traffic volume at 82.20 MT during the April-November period, followed by Paradip at 73.25 MT, Visakhapatnam at 47.05, JNPT at 44.93 MT, Kolkata (including Haldia) at 41.25 MT, and Mumbai at 40.88 MT.
 Chennai port handled 32.14 MT of cargo, while New Mangalore handled 24.17 MT.
 The volume of seaborne cargo is essentially in the nature of derived demand and is mainly shaped by the levels and changes in both global and domestic activity.

New Delhi, Apr 6 () Amid the coronavirus outbreak, India's major ports and PSUs under the Ministry of Shipping on Monday announced contributing Rs 52 crore to the PM-CARES Fund to fight the pandemic. India has 12 major ports -- Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V.O. Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia). "All major ports and public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Shipping have decided to contribute Rs 52 crore as CSR fund to the 'Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund' (PM-CARES Fund) which has been created to provide relief to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic-affected people," the Ministry of Shipping said in a statement. Apart from 12 major ports, other entities under the shipping ministry which contributed to the Fund include Cochin Shipyard Ltd, which contributed Rs 2.5 crore; Dredging Corporation and DGLL pledged Rs 1 crore each; IPRCL Rs 0.5 crore; Shipping Corporation of India Rs 0.37 crore; and SDCL Rs 0.094 crore. Among the major ports, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust contributed the highest Rs 16.40 crore from corporate social responsibility (CSR) to the PM-CARES Fund, followed by Rs 8 crore each by Deendayal Port Trust and Paradip Port Trust, and Rs 4 crore each by Kamarjar Port and New Mangalore Port Trust. V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust gave Rs 2 crore to the Fund for fight against COVID-19, while Vishakhapatnam Port Trust, Kolkata Port Trust and Mumbai Port Trust contributed Rs 1 each crore each to the Fund. Among others, Cochin Port Trust contributed Rs 0.54 crore, Chennai Port Trust Rs 0.50 crore and Mormagao Port Trust Rs 0.25 crore.  The ports had handled 518.93 MT of cargo during the corresponding period of the last fiscal.
 India has 12 major ports -- Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), Mumbai, JNPT, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V.O. Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia).
 While the handling of iron ore saw a 32.01 per cent jump to 39.36 MT during the period, thermal coal shipments declined by 17.08 per cent to 65.97 MT, the IPA data showed.
 The 12 ports had handled 29.82 MT of iron ore and 79.55 MT of coal during the April-December period of the previous fiscal.
 Handling of coking and other coal rose by 1.51 per cent to 42.39 MT during the nine months as compared to 41.76 MT in the corresponding period last fiscal.
 Finished fertiliser volumes jumped 20.17 per cent but raw fertiliser volumes remained stagnant during the period.
 Containers recorded a growth of 2.71 per cent in terms of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
 According to the figures, Deendayal port handled the highest traffic volume at 92.41 MT during the April-December period, followed by Paradip at 83.61 MT, Visakhapatnam at 53.53 MT, JNPT at 50.72 MT, Kolkata (including Haldia) at 47.09 MT, and Mumbai at 46.16 MT.
 Chennai port handled 35.83 MT of cargo, while New Mangalore handled 27.60 MT.
 The volume of seaborne cargo is essentially in the nature of derived demand and is mainly shaped by the levels and changes in both global and domestic activity.

Cargo volume at 12 major ports marginally up at 524 MT in April-December

New Delhi, Mar 3 () The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved a Rs 2,359-crore bid of ArcelorMittal India for debt-ridden Odisha Slurry Pipeline Infrastructure Ltd (OSPIL). A two-member bench of the NCLT Cuttack gave a go ahead to the resolution plan of ArcelorMittal India, which had been approved by the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of OSPIL. The tribunal observed that the plan provides repayment of the principal dues to all financial creditors of OSPIL, which is indeed "fair and equitable" and has taken care of the interests of all stakeholders. "The Resolution Plan submitted by ArcelorMittal India, the Resolution Applicant, approved by 100 per cent of voting in the 8th Committee of Creditor's Meeting held on December 6, 2019 is approved as per Section 31 (l) of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code," said NCLT. The two-member bench, which comprised Satya Ranjan Prasad and Sucharitha R also said that the order would be "binding on employees, members, creditors" and other stakeholders. OSPIL owns and operates a 253-km pipeline that connects iron ore mines in Dabuna, Odisha, to a pelletisation plant in Paradip. It connects ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (formerly Essar Steel) iron ore beneficiation plant in Dabuna to its pellet plant in Paradip in the state of Odisha. Commenting on the development, an ArcelorMittal spokesperson in a statement said: "We welcome today's judgment by NCLT Cuttack approving our resolution plan for the Odisha Slurry Pipeline Infrastructure Ltd (OSPIL), having previously secured unanimous approval from the Committee of Creditors for OSPIL. "Following today's approval by NCLT, we now look forward to completing the formalities that will see ownership of the asset transferred to AM/NS India," it added. The Resolution Professional of OSPIL had shortlisted two resolution plans by -- ArcelorMittal India and Thriveni Earthmovers. However, the Committee of Creditors opted in favour of ArcelorMittal India with 100 per cent voting. Thriveni Earthmovers had challenged its rejection before the NCLT but it withdrew its plea on February 24, 2020.
