<ul class="summary-list"><li>English para-swimmer Alice Tai had her right leg amputated in January.</li><li>On Sunday, she won Commonwealth Games gold.</li></ul><p>English para-swimmer Alice Tai won gold at the Commonwealth Games around half a year after having her leg amputated.</p><p>The 23-year-old won the S8 100 meter backstroke event at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham on Sunday.</p><p>"I didn't think I would be able to race this season," Tai said after her victory. "I'm so grateful that Team England let me come here and compete."</p><p>Tai is a seven-time World Championship gold medalist and Paralympic gold medalist. She was born with club foot.</p><p>In January, she opted to have her right leg amputated from below the knee due to increasing pain and discomfort.</p><p>After spending five months relearning how to be an elite swimmer, she made her international return at the Para-swimming World Championships in Madeira in June, where she won silver in the S8 100 meter freestyle.</p><p>"I've had so much to learn," she said. "I had to strip all my strokes back to the basics to make sure I am even in the water."</p><p>Tai said she now believes she can become a better swimmer than before.</p><p>"My start can be better, but we don't know how I can balance best on the blocks and also my stroke into the turn keeps changing as I get fitter.</p><p>"I won relay gold in Rio which is awesome but I really want an individual title in Paris in 2024."</p>

English swimmer wins Commonwealth Games gold 6 months after leg amputation

<keyword id="150205" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="amartya" source="Orion">Amartya</keyword> Chakraborty, a 19-year-old three-time former national para-swimming champion, passed away at the GB Pant Hospital here on Wednesday due to "sudden cardio-respiratory arrest".<br /><br />Amartya, who hailed from <keyword id="314667" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="salkia" source="Orion">Salkia</keyword> in Howrah district in West Bengal, was undergoing treatment at the hospital for a spinal cord disorder, which had left his lower body almost paralysed.<br /><br />The champion swimmer, who won around 30 medals at the national level, made his mark in the sub-junior and junior levels between 2015 and 2017 after he was classified under temporary disability category. But he was not allowed to compete in the Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai in December 2017 following a protest over his disability. He was disqualified soon after and declared "ineligible" by the <keyword id="381222" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="international-paralympic-committee" source="Orion">International Paralympic Committee</keyword> (IPC).<br /><br />A report in saachibaat.com had said days before the champion swimmer's death that Amartya's condition was serious and his father wasn't able to afford his treatment in a private hospital.<br /><br />The report said that, Amartya's spinal cord had become "completely unbalanced" and the lower part of the body had stopped working. "In medical terms, this is called arteriovenous malformation (AVM).
