By the end of this fiscal, <keyword id="207192" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Panasonic-India">Panasonic India</keyword> wants to increase its mobile phone revenue to more than double of what it is. The figure that they are aiming is estimated to be Rs 2,500 crore. The Japanese company also aims to double its market share, relying on aggressive 4G launch plans, backed by higher marketing spending. The confidence stems from the revenue growth it had in the last fiscal, increasing from Rs 600 crores in 2014-15 to Rs 1200 crores. 
 
"The mobile division contributed 15% towards overall India revenue, which we want to take to 25% by the end of the ongoing fiscal," Pankaj Rana, business head - mobility division, Panasonic India, told ET. 
 
As per the plans, the company plans to launch eight new smartphones in the next one and a half month, out of which seven would be 4G VoLTE smartphones. 
 
As of now, its portfolio includes ten smartphones (seven of them being 4G-enabled), ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 14,000. 
 
In the coming year, one can expect 30-35 new smartphones from Panasonic India, which would be priced between Rs 4,000 and Rs 20,000. Talking about marketing spending, Panasonic aims to spend about Rs 220 crore on marketing, out of which almost a fifth would be used for digital marketing. This figure is also almost doubled from last year’s Rs 120 crore.

Panasonic launched the world’s first fully rugged detachable laptop, <keyword id="685981" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Toughbook">Toughbook</keyword> CF-20 in India on Thursday. With this new launch the company is eyeing Rs 100 crore revenue for the Toughbook portfolio in the country. And with the government’s <keyword id="1929810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digital-India">Digital India</keyword> campaign, the company is betting big on the government sector and hopes to capture 70% of the India market for rugged laptops/tabs by 2018. 
 <keyword id="2725534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gunjan-Sachdev">Gunjan Sachdev</keyword>, National Business Head for Toughbook said “CF-20 is bundled with broad range of configural options, the ability to detach the tablet from notebook provides flexibility, reliability and enterprise-grade features. With CF-20 we are looking at increasing our market share from the existing 60%.” Panasonic has also been one of the oldest players in the segment with their first Toughbook coming out around 20yrs back.

Best Voltas split and window ACs to buy in 2023

As compared to last year, the sales of smartphones increased, by both value and volume, this festive season. The sales went up on huge demand for smartphones in Rs 20,000-category. The smartphone sales increased by minimum 40%. 
 
The upbeat sales has set a trend for the quarter ending December, which typically makes up for nearly a fourth to a fifth of annual revenue for the industry. This is a relief after a tepid first half this year. 
 “Compared to last year's <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword>, we saw an increase of 40 per cent in actual sales by volume, as per consumer activations, for <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> smartphones, and if we include Yu, sales were up 60 per cent,” <keyword id="400990" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics">Micromax Informatics</keyword> chief marketing officer Subhajit Sen told ET. 
 People with knowledge in this sector said that <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>’s mobile phone sales saw an increment of about 40%by value and consumer electronic’s sales had a risen sale of about 30%. <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> and <keyword id="145729" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karbonn">Karbonn</keyword> also had an higher sales by 14 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, while players such as <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> and LeEco, which have comparatively smaller bases, saw their sales more than double this Diwali against last year. 
 
The rise seen in sales during this season is said to be because of pent-up consumer demand coupled with a number of model launches by top tier as well as new entrant Chinese brands. Enabling 4G phones to allow Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and higher purchasing power due to good monsoon this year, acted as key catalysts. 
 
"This resulted in a 125 per cent growth in smartphone sales during Diwali compared to FY15-16,” Ravinder Zutshi, chairman of the mobile and communications council at CEAMA, the consumer electronics manufacturing association, told ET. 
 
There was an increase seen in the sales of phones in the range the Rs 8,000-20,000 and increased number of people entered the Rs 10,000-12,000,Rs 17,000-18,000 and the Rs 15,000 price points. 
 
"So, consumers in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segments ended up spending more and moving to one of these price bands, thus expanding share of the mid-segment. This was not the case last year,” a chief executive at one of the leading retail chains in India told ET. 
 
The strong demand during the festive season this year brings some relief to an industry which has seen smartphone sales losing pace in the first half of the year as fewer consumers switched from featurephones to smartphones, forcing analysts to lower their smartphone sales expectations in 2016 by as much as 17 per cent.

As India’s second-largest handset maker is foraying into the air-conditioner, refrigerator and washing machine segment, it wants to disrupt the space with pricing. 
 Also, <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> expects the consumer electronics business will contribute around 25% to its revenues by next year and help it in achieving a target of being a Rs 15,000-crore company. 
 
"We will remain an MNC challenger. We are a proven player fighting MNC smartphone brands for the past eight years with innovation and technology, and will continue with the same strategy for white goods. Pricing will be the icing on the cake, but not the cake itself. We will be a disruptor in consumer electronics space with product offerings and technology," Micromax Informatics cofounder Rajesh Agarwal told ET. 
 
Micromax may face a stiff competition in the segment as other brands such as Whirlpool, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=samsung&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Samsung</a>, Voltas, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=panasonic&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Panasonic</a>, Videocon and Godrej are also eyeing a big share in the market, which is led by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LG&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">LG</a>. 
 
"The market potential is huge since out of 100 homes which own a television, only five have an airconditioner. Next year, we will take it pan-India across both online and offline stores and expand the portfolio," he told ET. 
 
Micromax is placing its bet on television, air-conditioner, refrigerators and washing machines. 
 
"We were the first Indian brand to think of manufacturing four years back. We are in talks with various state governments who are offering us incentives to set up a plant for white goods," said Agarwal.

	How has your journey been so far?
 

	The group was working at various places like Yahoo!, Cisco, Adobe when we came together to build a start-up. You are at the valley and every other day a start-up was being born. That inspires you to build your own business too.
 

	According to a research by Cisco, the number of smartphones grew by 54 percent in 2014 to 140 million, and the number of smartphones will grow 4.7-fold between 2014 and 2019 to a total of 651 million.
 

	We were tech folks and hence we thought “Can we leverage this power?”
 Hence we started Cube 26 to make the devices more human friendly. We first developed a video sensor which is now popularly known as “Look Away to Pause”. If you are watching a video and someone comes in and you look away, the phone knows you are no longer watching the video and it is paused. This was a simple product which was launched in <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Facebook-Reveals-Its-Home-On-Android/articleshow/21200769.cms">android</a> phones. <keyword id="173725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung-Galaxy">Samsung Galaxy</keyword> uses it now too. 

	After a while we realised the potential of utility apps. If the app serves a purpose, the users will use it more. Hence, we started taking apps and added functionalities to it. Like, if you take your messaging app, you have lot of spam messages and notifications coming in. The simple things like spam filters become a utility for you.
 We started building monetisation apps as well like the local playstores where brands can acquire user customers. We did campaigns for <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, Myntra, ZO rooms, Quickr. These started generating revenues for both the companies as well as the OEMs who were making shares out of these things. 

	What are the challenges you faced when you first started the venture in India?
 

	When we started, we were purely tech guys and we had to build products that had to be scaled. So the first challenge was to understand the products that people usually buy. 
 

	Next was to identify the true market for your product.
 

	The third challenge was raising capital.
 

	What was your first failure? 
 

	In the first year we applied “Look Away to Pause” to the ad industry in US to help brands understand how their advertisements are recognised by users and what the market is. We could not scale that as ad industry is a slow moving industry. This taught us that identifying the true market is extremely essential to scale the company and the product.
 

	What are your future initiatives?
 

	Currently, we are focusing on ecommerce ecosystem and we are integrating it back in the app. Like, if you have a flight to catch you add this in your calendar. Prior to an hour to your flight, Ola or Uber would send you notifications about the availability and other details of cabs. If you have to catch a cab in just five minutes, certainly you would not look at this service as an advertisement; it becomes a utility in itself.
 

	We are also launching our iota category soon with a whole new innovative IoT products which would be “need to have products” and not “good to have products”.

Cube26 raises Rs. 50 crores funds from Flipkart and Tiger

New Delhi, May 12 () Top companies across sectors - automobile maker Maruti Suzuki, consumer electronics giant Samsung to IT giant Infosys - have reopened factories and offices as India took its first steps towards resuming economic activity after weeks under a near-total coronavirus lockdown. While the government has allowed businesses to resume under strict guidelines, companies are not rushing to achieve pre-COVID-19 run-rates and instead are calibrating staff strength as they are aware that any incident of infection can prove costly. Companies said employee safety and workplace hygiene is the prime focus. While Maruti resumed operations at its Manesar plant in Haryana on Tuesday, Infosys opened offices in some cities with up to 5 per cent staff and plans to gradually raise employee strength to 40 per cent. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has less than 1 per cent of its employees currently in India offices. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra too started operations at its factories with a limited number of workers. Flipkart, Panasonic India, Whirlpool and Dabur are among a host of companies that have put in place plans to restart operations with a small section of staff. Tata group-owned jewellery brand Tanishq has announced its plans to reopen its 328 stores across the country in a phased manner. The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, and it has already been extended twice -- first until May 3 and then again until May 17. However, some curbs have been eased beginning April 20 with permission being given to industries in rural areas to restart. Later, production, sale and transport of goods in areas where virus cases are less severe have also been allowed. However, the process of restarting factories and businesses is likely to be protracted, with production only gradually ramping up towards operational capacity levels. IHS Markit said although the limited restart of some industries has been permitted since April 20, India will still suffer severe disruptions to its industrial output due to the protracted lockdown. "The Indian economy is facing a recession in the 2020-21 financial year for the first time since 1979-80, during the second OPEC oil crisis shock," IHS Markit said. "Consequently, IHS Markit expects the lockdown measures to result in a contraction of Indian industrial production in the 2020-21 financial year." But several companies across sectors ranging from textiles to consumer electronics and liquor to pharma have partially resumed operations after getting permission from local authorities. While Panasonic India and South Asia President &amp; CEO Manish Sharma said the company plans to start operations at its factory with 30 per cent capacity and slowly take it up to 50 per cent in a month's time, Samsung Electronics India said its Noida factory has started limited operations. The Noida factory of Dixon Technologies too has resumed operations. The firm's Tirupati and Dehradun plants too have started operations at about one-third capacity, which will be scaled up to 75-80 per cent in the next one week, said Sunil Vachani, Chairman, Dixon Technologies. Neeraj Bahl, the CEO of BSH Home Appliances -- German company which manufactures and sells under Bosch and Siemens brands in India -- said the firm is in process of starting production in its Tamil Nadu factory with limited staff. Mahendra Singhi, President, Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), said 25-30 per cent of cement production capacity in the country has resumed. JK Lakshmi Cement director Shailendra Chouksey said the firm has clearances to operate all its seven plants in five states with reduced staff strength and following government's COVID-19 guidelines for factories. "However, these measures alone shall not suffice. Unless construction is allowed rather encouraged to resume operations", the sector outlook would not be very good, he said. Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) president Kamal Nandi said slowly retail operations are opening up in green and orange zones. "Roughly industry's 30-35 per cent outlets are open throughout the country though geographically not equally distributed." "We have also got permission to open factories in green and orange zones. Most of the brands are preparing to resume operations. Some brands started last week and some would start from this week. Even more important, the supplier's plant is opening up and we are all preparing to resume operations and slowly production would start," he said. There is still no pressing need for the brands to go ahead and start mass production from day one as there is a lot of inventory in warehouses and with dealers, he added. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) director-general Rajesh Menon said the auto sector lost over Rs 90,000 crore in revenue due to the lockdown. Ashok Leyland MD &amp; CEO Vipin Sondhi said these are truly unprecedented times, and the government and industry need to work closely to bring the industry back on its feet. Rossari Biotech IPO⁠— 40 scientists, China, and other factors that make the share sale hot

New Delhi, Nov 25 () Apple is now making its iPhone XR in India for domestic market and exports, while one of its suppliers, Salcomp, will invest Rs 2,000 crore over the next five years to make components at a plant in southern India from March 2020, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Monday.
 Prasad said Salcomp, the world's largest manufacturer and a major supplier of chargers to Apple for iPhone, has reached agreement to take over the closed facility of Nokia in a SEZ near Chennai.
 The facility, which has been closed for nearly 10 years, will be revived and made operational from March 2020.
 The unit will produce charger and other equipment, and will boast of a diversified portfolio of products. This will entail an investment of Rs 2,000 crore in five years, he said.
 "It is a very proud moment for India. Earlier, it (iPhone boxes) used to say designed in California and assembled in China. Now it says assembled in India and also manufactured and marketed in India. We welcome Apple, expand your operations in India. That is our expectation," Prasad said showcasing a 'Made in India' Apple XR device.
 He added that all Apple products, including mobile phones being manufactured in India will be used for domestic market as well as export.
 Apple, which also works with Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron in India, already makes iPhone 6S and 7 here.
 In September, Prasad, after a CEOs roundtable with over 50 electronics and phone companies, had exhorted Apple to expand manufacturing base in India and to use the country as export hub, promising to line up fresh incentives and sops to galvanise electronics as well as phone industry.
 Key players from the electronics and manufacturing industry including Apple, vivo, Oppo, Qualcomm, Xiaomi, Dell, HP, Bosch, Cisco, Flextronics, Foxconn, Nokia, LG, Panasonic, Intel, Wistron, and Sterlite Technologies had attended the meeting.
 Apple continues to place big bets on India. The US-based company had said its revenues in India 'established new records' in the September 2019 quarter, including achieving its highest revenue from Mac sales in the country.
 After the Indian government relaxed FDI norms offering more flexibility on local sourcing norms in August this year, Apple had said it is keen on offering online and in-store experience to Indian users that are at par with its global standards and aims to open its maiden retail store in India.
 Apple, which competes with the likes of Samsung and OnePlus in the premium smartphone market, made an entry into the top 10 smartphone brands tally in July-September 2019 quarter due to price cuts on XR model along with good channel demand for its newly launched iPhone 11, a report by Counterpoint had said.
 Apple India recorded a net profit of Rs 262.27 crore in the year ended March 2019, while its revenue from operations were at Rs 10,538.25 crore for 2018-19, as per regulatory documents.
 Talking about Salcomp, Prasad said, "I am happy to share, Salcomp, the world's largest manufacturer and major supplier of charger to Apple for iPhones, has reached agreement to take over entire facility of Nokia handset that was lying closed for 10 year. It will start from March 2020," he said.
 Prasad added that the unit will manufacture chargers and other equipment.
 "Apart from charger and other equipment it will lead to diversified product portfolio of CMC, moulding, painting etc...(About) 10,000 people will get jobs in this and indirect job creation will be 50,000. About 70 per cent of products from this SEZ facility will be exported, mostly to China. It will lead to value addition also," he said.
 In the ongoing financial year, mobile phone exports from India will be at USD 1.6 billion while that of components will also be at USD 1.6 billion, he said. 
 "It is welcome development...earlier we had almost zero exports but our consistent efforts for last three years is bearing good results," Prasad said.
