Govt warns about fake SMS asking users to update their PAN – what it is and how to stay safe

The government has relaxed provisions of <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="keywords">TDS</keyword>/<keyword id="19950203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="keywords">TCS</keyword> in the event of the death of the deductee/collectee before the linkage of PAN and <keyword id="19898107" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="keywords">Aadhaar</keyword> card. TDS is Tax Deducted at Source and TCS is Tax Collected at Source in India.<br /><br />The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has issued a circular dated August 5, in view of genuine difficulties being faced by taxpayers. Through the circular, the government said it has relaxed the provisions of TDS/TCS, as per the Income-tax Act, in the event of death of deductee/collectee before linking of PAN and Aadhaar.<br /><br />In order to redress the grievances of the taxpayers wherein instances have been cited, of demise of the deductee/collectee on or before May 31, 2024 and before the option to link PAN and Aadhaar could have been exercised, the circular provides that there shall be no liability on the deductor/collector to deduct/collect the tax under the relevant section of <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">income tax act</keyword>, pertaining to the transactions entered into up to March 31, 2024.<br /><br />On April 23, 2024, CBDT extended the date for linking of PAN and Aadhaar May for the taxpayers (for the transactions entered into up to March 2024) to avoid higher TDS/ TCS, as per the income tax act.<br /><br />Under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on July 1, 2017 and is eligible to obtain <keyword id="20030312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-Number" source="keywords">Aadhaar Number</keyword>, is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority, on payment of a prescribed fee. Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the income tax act.<br /><br />As per government, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows:<br /><br />1. No refund shall be made against such PANs<br />2. Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative<br />3. TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the income tax act. <br /><br />

Currently, U-WIN is in pilot mode across all states and Union Territories, except for West Bengal, which is yet to start uploading data, the sources told PTI, adding that it is still under consideration in the state. <br /><br /> The U-WIN platform captures every <keyword id="19933690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccination" source="keywords">vaccination</keyword> event for pregnant women and children under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). <br /><br /> Minister of Finance <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> had announced in the interim Budget for 2024-2025 that U-WIN, along with intensified efforts under Mission Indradhanush, will be rolled out nationwide for managing <keyword id="21423640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="immunisation" source="keywords">immunisation</keyword>. <br /><br /> "The U-WIN will ensure timely administration of vaccine doses by digitally recording every vaccination event under the Universal Immunisation Programme among all pregnant women and children aged 0-5 years," an official told PTI. <br /><br /> "The portal will target 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.6 crore infants (0-1 years) annually by providing 11 vaccines against 12 vaccine preventable diseases -- diphtheria, measles, rubella, and tetanus through more than 1.2 crore vaccination sessions across the country," the official added. <br /><br /> The platform generates a uniform QR-based, digitally verifiable e-vaccination certificate, similar to Covid vaccination certificate, which can be accessed anytime by the citizens through a single click. <br /><br /> Vaccination records under UIP are being maintained manually as of now. So this will do away with the hassle of keeping a physical record, the officials explained. <br /><br /> It will enable the digitisation of session planning, and updating vaccination status on a real-time basis, they added. <br /><br /> "Also, there is no mechanism of individual tracking. There is also lack of awareness among beneficiaries about session location and date especially in urban areas and iniquity in immunisation coverage in states and UTs," another official said. <br /><br /> "Besides, another major issue is that immunisation at private health facilities is not recorded," the official added. <br /><br /> The U-WIN is going to be the single source of information for immunisation services which will record pregnancy details and outcome, newborn registration and immunisation at birth. It will update vaccination status, and delivery outcome, among others, on real time, the official said. <br /><br /> As of July 9, 2024, the pilot has registered 5.33 crore beneficiaries on U-WIN. Over 83.55 lakh vaccination sessions have been digitally conducted, and 18.15 crore vaccine doses have been recorded. <br /><br /> The platform aims to reduce zero-dose and left-out children through a name-based tracking mechanism and empower citizens with anytime, anywhere access to vaccination services, particularly benefiting migratory populations, the official said. <br /><br /> "The U-WIN portal is likely to be launched pan <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> in August end," the official stated. <br /><br /> Citizens can self-register for vaccinations via the U-WIN web portal or its Android mobile application, select preferred vaccination centres, and schedule appointments. Three years later, the sequel, "Beverly Hills Cop II," was another hit, solidifying Bruckheimer and producing partner Dom Simpson's "high concept" style of moviemaking with its straightforward, easy-to-understand but exhilarating stories.</p><div type="image" title="Eddie Murphy holding a gun" height="576" width="1024" msid="111264121" hostid="261" sizebytes="39822"></div><p>So the 1994 release of "Beverly Hills Cop III" was highly anticipated. The problem was that Bruckheimer and Simpson (who were also known for "Flashdance" and "Top Gun") had exited the franchise due to creative differences. Murphy went forward alongside new producers and director John Landis ("Animal House," Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video).</p><p>The movie, which found Murphy's wise-cracking Detroit cop Axel Foley fighting crime at an amusement park and featured an out-of-left-field cameo by "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, was universally panned by critics and has since been criticized by Murphy himself.</p><p>The star <a target="_blank" href="https://screenrant.com/beverly-hills-cop-movie-sequels-eddie-murphy-hate-reason/">described the movie as "atrocious"</a> in a 2006 episode of "Inside the Actors Studio."</p><p>"The character was kind of banished for a while [from Hollywood]," Murphy said in the episode, referring to the reception of the third movie.</p><div type="image" title="Mark Molloy and Jerry Bruckheimer in dark suits and wearing sunglasses" height="3072" width="4096" msid="111264123" hostid="261" sizebytes="441820"></div><p>Now, Bruckheimer has returned to the franchise and has been working with everyone from Brett Ratner to new "Bad Boys" franchise directors Adil and Bilall to get a fourth movie just right.</p><p>With Netflix backing and Molloy at the helm, "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" will be released on the streaming giant on July 3. It marks Molloy's feature-directing debut after years of commercial work and brings the franchise back to its roots with thrilling action sequences and R-rated humor.</p><p>"Whatever has been said about the third one, I'm not going to say a word," Molloy said. "I love the first two films, and I've grabbed onto them with both hands with a lot of love."</p>

Initially, Pan was thought to be a victim of the crime, calling 911 while saying that she was tied to a banister.<br /><br />After multiple interrogations, police suspected that Pan was the one who hired the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hitman-secret-past-revealed-after-killed-in-front-of-family-2024-1">hitmen</a> to kill her parents. In 2014, Pan was found guilty of first-degree murder.<br /><br />Here's what happened in her case, and where she is today.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Jennifer Pan conspired to kill her parents after lying to them about her life</strong></h2>Pan's life, and the circumstances leading up to her crime, were detailed in a <a target="_blank" href="https://torontolife.com/city/jennifer-pan-revenge/">2015 Toronto Life</a> article by journalist Karen K. Ho, who reportedly grew up with Pan. Her parents, Bich Ha and Huei Hann Pan were immigrants who had separately come to Canada as refugees before marrying and having two children.<br /><br />In the article, Ho recounts Pan's restrictive childhood, and the immense pressure placed on her to succeed academically. Pan reportedly lied to her parents about her high school grades, her college admission, and professional volunteer opportunities. Instead, she was spending time with Daniel Wong, with whom she had formed a relationship, and worked odd jobs.<br /><br />When her parents found out, they placed her under more strict control, eventually forbidding her from seeing Wong. In early 2010, Wong and Pan plotted to hire <keyword id="21278975" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="leonard-crawford" source="keywords">Leonard Crawford</keyword>, one of Wong's acquaintances, to kill her parents. <br /><br />  <div type="image" title="daniel wong in police interview footage, wearing a balck shirt and glasses, sitting in a chair. the image quality is poor" height="948" width="1264" msid="109205506" hostid="261"></div>Per Toronto Life, Crawford and two other men entered the Pan household on November 8, 2010. They killed Bich, and shot Hann in the head and shoulder, while Jennifer was tied to the banister. From there, she called 911.<br /><br />"What Jennifer Did," includes extensive footage from Pan's interviews with police, in which she recounts the home invasion, how she managed to use her cell phone while bound, and eventually, the lies in her story to police falling apart. In the spring of 2011, they also arrested Wong, Crawford, and two other men involved in the incident.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Pan was sentenced to life in prison</strong></h2>Pan's trial began in March 2014 and lasted 10 months, according to Toronto Life.<br /><br />She was found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/jennifer-pan-sentenced-to-life-without-parole-for-25-years-1.2930113">CBC</a> reported. In January 2015, she was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for the first-degree murder charge, and a concurrent life sentence for the attempted murder charge. Crawford, Wong, and one of the other men, David Mylvaganam, were handed the same sentence, per Toronto Life. <br /><br />Pan's family requested, and was granted, a non-communication order that prevented her from ever speaking to Hann or her brother Felix.<br /><br />"When I lost my wife, I lost my daughter at the same time," her father, who did not appear in court, said in a written statement, per CBC.<br /><br />"I hope my daughter Jennifer thinks about what happened to her family and can become a good, honest person someday," he wrote.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="hann pan and bich pan seen in a photo, displayed in a frame on a table. the two are standing in front of a green field, leaning against a railing, and smiling." height="949" width="1265" msid="109205508" hostid="261"></div><h2><br />A retrial was ordered in 2023</h2>In May 2023, the Ontario Appeal Court ordered a retrial for Pan, Wong, Crawford, and Mylvaganam, CBC reported. According to the court, the judge in the original trial had limited the jury from considering other verdicts, such as a second-degree murder or manslaughter, in relation to the killing of Pan's mother. The retrial is only in reference to the first-degree murder charge — not the attempted murder charge in relation to her father.<br /><br /><a target="_blank" href="https://www.yorkregion.com/news/crime/its-a-fine-line-crown-seeks-supreme-court-appeal-in-jennifer-pan-case/article_276d18c7-fee8-52c6-a8ff-9dbc60834cf2.html">The Markham Economist &amp; Sun</a> reported in August 2023 that the Crown (the term used for prosecutors in Canada's legal system) had filed an application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada regarding the Ontario Appeal Court's decision. Per the publication, if the Supreme Court denies the leave to appeal, Pan may or may not get a new trial. If there is no new trial, Pan will be able to seek parole.<br /><br />According to footage from "What Jennifer Did," Pan still maintains her innocence.<br /><br /><em>Correction: April 11, 2024 — An earlier version of this story stated that Jennifer Pan was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for the first-degree murder charge.
