<ul class="summary-list"><li>Dollar General is testing cashierless checkout technology at a store in North Carolina.</li><li>The store functions similar to venues that use Amazon's Just Walk Out technology.</li></ul><p>The US's largest dollar store chain is experimenting with Amazon-like cashierless technology, the company confirmed to Insider.</p><p>Customers at a Dollar General store in Banner Elk, North Carolina, don't have to stand in line or deal with a self-checkout kiosk at the end of their visit. Instead, they can simply walk out with their purchases. </p><p>The experience at this Dollar General seems reminiscent of Amazon's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-sees-huge-potential-in-licensing-cashierless-store-technology-2022-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Just Walk Out technology</a>, which the e-commerce giant <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-review-photos-how-it-works-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">debuted several years ago</a> in its Amazon Go convenience stores. Dollar General, though, is working with AiFi, a startup that has developed its own technology and partners with retailers. Both systems utilize dozens of cameras to monitor what a shopper picks up and, ultimately, charge shoppers for what they remove from a store.</p><p>"Consistent with our ongoing strategy to continually look for new ways to meet our customers' value and convenience needs, we recently piloted a store with frictionless technology," Dollar General told Insider. "While we do not currently plan to expand this technology, we instead will continue to test and learn."</p><p>AiFi did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.</p><p>A TikTok video posted last October shows a customer shopping at the Banner Elk store. Before entering, the customer inserts a credit card into a kiosk and requests a receipt for purchases on a touchscreen. A worker then opens the door to let the customer into the store, though the customer says the store plans to install a door that will automatically open.</p> <p>"It has everything you could possibly want," the customer says in the video as she pans around to show shelves full of cereal, bread, soft drinks, and other shelf-stable groceries. "It does not sell alcohol, because there isn't a cashier on-site that could validate your ID," she adds.</p><p>The customer leaves the store with several packages of candy, then shows a screenshot of a receipt that was texted to her smartphone.</p><p>Amazon has spent the last few years rolling out its Just Walk Out technology through Amazon Go stores and at a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/review-whole-foods-just-walk-out-bypass-checkout-line-amazon-2022-3">Whole Foods store in Washington, DC.</a> But recently, it has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-stores-closing-nyc-san-francisco-seattle-2023-3">shuttered some Amazon Go stores</a> in New York, San Francisco, and Seattle.</p><p>In February, AiFi said its technology was in use at <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/aifi-surpasses-100-computer-vision-powered-autonomous-stores-opened-globally-301753928.html?tc=eml_cleartime" target="_blank" rel="noopener">just over 100 stores.</a> Other retailers that have worked with the startup include Aldi, which added AiFi's tech to a UK grocery store, and French retailer Carrefour. </p><p>Amazon opened the first Amazon Go store to the public in 2018. Afterward, <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/news-insights/latest-news-headlines/retailers-turn-to-new-checkout-tech-in-the-age-of-amazon-go-49358936" target="_blank" rel="noopener">startups like AiFi</a> promoted their technology to retailers who wanted to compete with Amazon on cashierless checkout. The startups said their camera and computer-vision systems would save customers time at checkout and allow retailers to put stores in areas where they couldn't hire employees. Dollar General has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-general-workers-hours-cut-employee-shortage-leads-to-clutter-2023-5">faced labor shortages. </a></p><p>But the technology hasn't become widespread since then, Frank Beard, a retail analyst who works in the convenience store industry, told Insider. "If you look at the total store count for autonomous checkout stores, it's really been a slow trickle rather than this autonomous retail revolution," Beard said.</p><p>The technology can be used for a variety of purposes, such as monitoring which products need to be re-stocked on shelves. Dollar General is testing Amazon-style tech that lets customers leave without checking out

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A crocodile was tangled in a motorcycle tire for six years.</li><li>An Indonesian bird catcher freed the crocodile after three weeks of trying, per AP.</li></ul><p>A motorcycle tire that had been jammed on a wild crocodile's neck for at least six years has finally been removed, according to the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/02/09/1079514137/crocodile-freed-tire-indonesia">Associated Press (AP).</a></p><p>Tili, a 35-year-old Indonesian bird catcher, freed the 14.8-foot saltwater crocodile from the tire on Wednesday, after weeks of trying and earlier failed attempts, the AP reported.</p><p>The female crocodile had become well-known to the people of Palu, a city on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, per the AP.</p><p>The giant reptile had even attracted <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="international" source="Orion">international</keyword> attention, leading to a <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-18/indonesian-crocodile-outwits-aussie-wrangler-matt-wright/11974082">failed attempt to free it by the Australian "Outback Wrangler" star Matthew Wright</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Crocodile with tire around its neck" height="2000" width="2666" msid="89550412" hostid="261"></div><p>In early January, Tili, who had recently moved to Palu, was made aware by his neighbors of the locally iconic, tire-wearing crocodile. Downed power lines have left parts of the city in darkness.</p><p><span>Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management, posted video showing the moment the tsunami battered the island's coast on Friday.</span></p><p>Nugroho also posted video of the moment when the earthquake hit the area earlier on Friday. People can be seen fleeing as buildings around them collapse.</p><p>He said at the time that victims could still trapped in the surrounding area, adding that Palu's Petobo neighborhood was devastated, and said there were still "hundreds of victims buried in mud."</p><p><a href="https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/indonesia-quake-neighborhood-buried-final-embrace-58211144">ABC News</a>&#xa0;confirmed that some victims were found "entombed" in mud, most of the casualties were caused by the quake and the tsunami, though hundreds of others were buried alive under soil that had loosened and collapsed after the earthquake in a process known as liquefaction. Special rescue teams arrived on Monday to begin digging.</p><h2>Victims buried in mass graves&#xa0;</h2><p>Local and military officials have arranged for a mass burial site in Palu for the overwhelming number of victims. According to Sutopo, officials worry that a delay in burying the victims could create a new health crisis.&#xa0;</p><p>According to The <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-01/indonesia-quake-death-toll-rises-preparations-for-mass-burial/10325792">Australian Broadcasting Corporation</a>, relatives have sifted through body bags searching for their loved ones. The gravesite could be enlarged if necessary, officials added.&#xa0;</p><p>Across the island, around 50,000 people remained displaced as the main Palu airport was damaged and operating with only one functioning runway as of Tuesday, according to the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2018/oct/02/indonesia-tsunami-palu-aid-food-shortages-video-death-toll-sulawesi">Guardian</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>Thousands of people sought refuge at the airport, which forced it to shut down temporarily.&#xa0;</p><h2>Early detection warning systems failed&#xa0;</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Reports indicate that the country's early detection warning systems were not working before the tsunami hit.</p><p>Officials confirmed to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-45704438">BBC</a> that a network of more than 20 floating detection units connected to underwater sensors which transmit advance tsunami warnings to the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency had either been damaged or stolen.</p><p>The system had not worked since 2012, and an apparent lack of funding hasn't helped.&#xa0;</p><p>"If we look at the funding, it has decreased every year," disaster agency spokesperson&#xa0;<span>Sutopo</span> told local media Sunday.</p><p>A tsunami warning was still issued, but it appeared to significantly underestimated the scale of the impending waves. Indonesia's geophysics agency warned of a tsunami nearly 10 feet tall, but <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-30/indonesia-tsunami-sensors-missed-huge-waves-official-says/10321330">lifted the warning shortly after it was issued</a>.</p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Many people didn't recieve alerts at all because of non-functioning power lines and a lack of storm sirens along the coast. By the time his job was done, it was too late to escape.</strong></li><li>Agung <strong>jumped from the tower when it started to collapse, but died from his injuries in hospital.</strong></li><li><strong>The pilot paid tribute to Agung as his "guardian angel", and said that he had less than 30 seconds to spare escaping the island.</strong></li><li><strong>The official death toll from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami is more than 800, but authorities fear that thousands may be dead.</strong></li></ul><p>A 21-year-old Indonesian air traffic controller sacrificed himself to help a passenger jet escape the country's catastrophic earthquake which has killed hundreds of people.</p><p><span>Anthonius Gunawan Agung was on duty in Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport near the city of Palu, and refused to leave the air traffic control tower until the plane was airborne even after the 7.5 magnitude&#xa0;earthquake hit,<a href="https://twitter.com/AirNav_Official/status/1045974194586935296">&#xa0;Indonesia's air traffic control company wrote on Twitter.</a></span></p><p><span>Spokesman Yohanes Harry Sirai told Sky News: "When the quake happened, he was giving clearance to Batik Air to take off and waited for the plane to be safely airborne before finally leaving the ATC cabin tower."</span></p><p><span>Agung jumped from the four-story tower as it began to collapse. He suffered broken bones and internal injuries on landing which ultimately killed him.</span></p><p><span>The air traffic control company posted photos of Agung's body being saluted by lines of what appear to be soldiers and with the hashtag #RIPAgung.</span></p><p><span>Icoze Ezoci, the pilot of the rescued plane, posted tributes to&#xa0;Agung on Instagram.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"Thank you for keeping me and guarding me till I'm safely airborne," he wrote. "Rest peacefully my wing man. Parliament was scheduled to vote on the new law on Tuesday, but the vote has since been delayed. </p><p>The country's Criminal Code was developed in 1946 and was based on Dutch colonial law. According to the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/sep/26/indonesias-criminal-code-what-is-it-why-does-it-matter-and-will-it-be-passed">Guardian</a>, there are over 18 changes to the law that have sparked the controversy, but students are particularly concerned about the government trying to control their private lives. </p><p>The most controversial laws include banning sex outside of marriage and prohibiting unmarried couples from cohabitating. </p><p>Sex outside of marriage is punishable by up to one year in jail under the draft law. Couples who live together outside of marriage could also face up to six months in jail. </p><p>The bill also discusses sex education, contraception, and proposes a four-year prison sentence for abortions performed outside the law. <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2019/09/18/indonesia-draft-criminal-code-disastrous-rights">Critics say</a> the new changes would also make it a crime to be gay, and may limit human rights and restrict freedom of speech.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-indonesia-politics-rights/indonesia-student-protests-against-law-changes-enter-third-day-idUSKBN1WA0Q2">Reuters</a>, students say they're also against changes to a law concerning the country's anti-corruption watchdog Corruption Eradication Commission, also known by its initials KPK. He added that 94 people were arrested. </p><p>On Wednesday, police again shot multiple tear gas rounds at thousands of students, some of whom were throwing stones and setting fires in the capital.
