A massive drive to convert 400 acres of unutilised or barren land into a dense forest within a period of time is underway in <keyword id="6356825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="trichy" source="Orion">Trichy</keyword> district in <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>. The Trichy district administration officials told IANS that the land identified is a "Porambokku" land at <keyword id="2549357" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lalgudi-taluk" source="Orion">Lalgudi Taluk</keyword> in the district, and 25,000 <keyword id="6373390" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="palmyra" source="Orion">palmyra</keyword> saplings have already been planted. The district administration and Lalgudi Taluk officials said that around 2 lakh saplings would be planted on the 400-acre land. The palmyra saplings are planted at a distance of 12 feet from each other so that it is not crowded when they grow up. According to the <keyword id="14730500" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="district-rural" source="Orion">District Rural</keyword> development department officials, a private firm is sponsoring all the saplings and the planting and maintenance, including watering, is being done by the workers of the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). Officials attached to the project told IANS that the tract of land could develop into an "economic zone" in ten years' time from the marketable yield and employment opportunities that it could offer. <keyword id="6158061" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="godson-samuel" source="Orion">Godson Samuel</keyword>. S, a researcher on <keyword id="7591008" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="palmyra-palm" source="Orion">Palmyra palm</keyword>s and author of the book "A travelogue of Palmyra Palm", told reporters that the tree does not grow in a controlled environment and that the 400 acres of land where the plantation is being taken up will turn into a dense forest. He said that it would turn into a significant ecological area attracting wild animals and birds. Samuel said that the Palmyra trees have an important cultural significance in the country and added that this would also lead to the revival of a lost culture.

Unlike other, <keyword id="10202" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Razak">Razak</keyword> sells chicken not in a plastic bag but palmyra leaf boxes. 
 
Being in this profession for almost 10 years now, he used to sell chicken with a heavy heart thinking about the consequences that too much usage of plastic bags would result in. 
 <keyword id="6354388" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tuticorin">Tuticorin</keyword> and Tirunelveli are known across the country for the art of palmyra boxes. Taking a cue from this, Razak found some vendors in village who agreed to take orders in bulk at a reasonable rate. And that is when he decided to make a switch from plastic bags to these organic boxes. 
 
Before the advent of plastic bags, these boxes were used. And Razak has again gone back to the history to save the environment. For small quantities, however, Razak uses paper and banana leaf as these boxes are costlier. 
 
Not only are these paymra boxes eco-friendly, the fibre in it lets air seep through and keep the meat fresher for longer hours. Also the palm leaves has an aroma that gets infused into the chicken and adds to the flavour while being cooked. 
 It’s actually the plan of Razak’s son, <keyword id="4042580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sahul-meeran">Sahul Meeran</keyword>, a chemical engineer working with a pharmaceutical company at Vizag, who thought of this grand plan. Razak had asked his son to find an alternative to plastic bags as that litter too much and affects the environment. 
 
Meat in palymra boxes are a huge hit and people in the locality are quite ecstatic. Razak told The Times of India,” Of late there is lot of awareness among people also. They are willing to bring utensils to buy meat. After I have introduced palmyra boxes, a lot of people are keen on using them and traders have asked for such boxes.”
