The Biden Administration has engaged with the Indian government urging them to cooperate with <keyword id="6356687" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="canada" source="Orion">Canada</keyword> in its investigations into the death of a Khalistani separatist, a US State Department official has said. Bilateral ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister <keyword id="1740494" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="justin-trudeau" source="Orion">Justin Trudeau</keyword>'s allegations of "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of <keyword id="7575364" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hardeep-Singh-Nijjar" source="Orion">Hardeep Singh Nijjar</keyword> in British Columbia in June. <br /><br />India has rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case. <br /><br />The issue of the killing of Nijjar in Canada was raised by Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his meeting with External Affairs Minister <keyword id="491850" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="s-jaishankar" source="Orion">S Jaishankar</keyword> here last week. <br /><br />"As he made clear then, I'll reiterate now, we remain in close coordination with our Canadian colleagues on this question," State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller told reporters on Monday at his daily news conference in response to a question raised by a Pakistani journalist. <br /><br />"We have engaged with the Indian government on a number of occasions to urge them to cooperate with Canada's investigation. The secretary had an opportunity to do that in his meeting with the foreign minister on Friday," he said. <br /><br />When asked if India has agreed to cooperate with Canada, Miller said this is for New Delhi to respond to. <br /><br />"I will let the Indian government speak for themselves and I will speak for the United States government, and we urge that cooperation," he said. <br /><br />Jaishankar told journalists here last week that the governments of India and Canada will have to talk to each other and see how they resolve their differences over the issue and underlined that the larger issue of "permissiveness" must be flagged and addressed. <br /><br />"The issue is as follows, which is that the Canadians have made some allegations. We have pointed out to them that this is not the government of India's policy, but if they are prepared to share with us specifics and anything relevant, we are also open to looking at it. So in that sense, that's where the matter stands," Jaishankar said.

"The Government has been pursuing a well coordinated and multi-pronged approach to tackle the activities of ISI which include strengthening vigilance on the borders to check infiltration and illegal cross border activities, gearing up the intelligence machinery to interdict Pakistani agents, close interaction and coordination between different agencies of the Centre and State Governments for neutralising plans of ISI/anti-national elements," he said. <br />

The blackouts are a tool to stop people from organizing protests, and to control the spread of information that Indian authorities deem unsavory.</p><p>Some have been able to bypass the internet ban: India's state-owned BSNL telcom provider<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/news/journalists-in-kashmir-get-satellite-phones-after-internet-and-mobile-are-shut-down/articleshow/70530054.cms">sold satellite phones to journalists</a><span> </span>on the ground for 100,000 rupees (around $1,400) so they could continue reporting. Many residents have no access to the news or medical care.</strong></li><li><strong><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></strong></li></ul><p>The Indian government has accused the BBC and Reuters of fabricating news reports of a massive protest in Kashmir amid its week-long internet and phone blackout - even though the demonstration was recorded on camera.</p><p>Both outlets reported on Friday that thousands of people in Srinagar, a major city in the disputed region, and that Indian police in the region used tear gas on the crowd.</p><p>The people had gathered in Srinagar's Soura area after Friday prayers to protest against India's Monday cancellation of two articles in its constitution that guaranteed the state of Jammu and Kashmir's right to make its own laws and prevent outsiders from buying property in the region.</p><p>Friday's demonstration was the largest since India announced its constitutional changes on Monday, the BBC and Reuters both said. It did not feature any footage of the protests.</p><p>The next day, Indian Ministry of Home Affairs spokeswoman Vasudha Gupta <a href="https://twitter.com/PIBHomeAffairs/status/1160081078486368256">tweeted</a> that the report was "completely fabricated and incorrect," and that protests in Kashmir last week did not exceed 20 people.</p><p>"There have been a few stray protests in Srinagar/Baramulla and none involved a crowd of more than 20 [ppl]," she added.</p><p>The BBC's report of the same protest, published Saturday, featured video footage of the rally and reported in text that reporters "witnessed the police opening fire and using tear gas to disperse the crowd."</p><p>In the video, report the BBC noted that the Indian government "denied the protest happened."</p><p>It also said <a href="https://twitter.com/BBCNewsPR/status/1160510079780761600">in a Sunday statement</a>: "The BBC stands by its journalism and we strongly refute any claims that we have misrepresented events in Kashmir. We are covering the situation impartially and accurately."</p><p>It's not clear if the BBC published the video after the India government denied the report.
