<ul class="summary-list"><li>Analysts believe Pakistan may be arming its JF-17 fighters with nuclear-armed cruise missiles.</li><li>Suspicions the JF-17 could be armed with nuclear missiles were speculative until a recent photo.</li></ul>The nuclear balance of terror between America and Russia, and now also America and China, attracts the most concern about an atomic apocalypse. But the simmering conflict between India and Pakistan — both of which are nuclear powers — is no less dangerous.Now there are indications that Pakistan is arming its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-pakistan-jf17-may-be-most-widely-operated-combat-jet-2022-11">JF-17 fighters</a> with nuclear-capable cruise missiles. The JF-17s are replacing older French-made Mirage jets that Pakistan has tasked for nuclear strike missions, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://fas.org/publication/pakistan-jf17-aircraft-nuclear-potential/">Federation of American Scientists</a>."These developments, along with heightened tensions in the region, have raised concerns about accelerated arms racing as well as new risks for escalation in a potential conflict between India and Pakistan, especially since India is also increasing the size and improving the capabilities of its nuclear arsenal," wrote FAS analyst Eliana Johns.Not surprisingly given Pakistan's secretiveness over its nuclear program, the evidence for nuclear-armed JF-17s is somewhat circumstantial. Pakistan's current nuclear strike aircraft are the 1960s-vintage Mirage V, armed with nuclear bombs, and the Mirage III, which has been tested with the Ra'ad cruise missile, which can be armed with nuclear or conventional warheads. And a JF-17 in flight was recently photographed carrying what appears to be a Ra'ad missile.However, the Pakistani Air Force has at least 130 of the JF-17 Thunder, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/azerbaijan-snubbed-russia-fighter-jets-for-competitors-turkey-pakistan-2024-3">joint project</a> between Pakistan and China that created a fighter <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-arms-sales-may-get-boost-from-russia-war-ukraine-2023-7">that is equivalent</a> to the US F-16 (Pakistan also operates 75 F-16s). The aircraft, designated the FC-1 Xiaolong ("Fierce Dragon") in Chinese service, first flew in 2003.Suspicions that the JF-17 would be armed with Ra'ad missiles were mostly speculative, until a photo surfaced recently. "During rehearsals for the 2023 Pakistan Day Parade (which was subsequently canceled), an image surfaced of a JF-17 Thunder Block II carrying what was reported to be a Ra'ad ALCM," according to FAS. "Notably, this was the first time such a configuration had been observed in public."The Federation of American Scientists "was able to purchase the original image," and compared the Ra'ad mounted on the JF-17 with previous images. One question was which version of the Ra'ad had been fitted to the JF-17. The <a target="_blank" href="https://missilethreat.csis.org/missile/hatf-8/">Ra'ad</a> I (also known as the Hatf-8) is a subsonic air-launched cruise missile with an estimated range of more than 200 miles, and corresponds to other models such as the Europe's Storm Shadow, according to the CSIS Missile Threat defense site. The newer Ra'ad II reportedly has a range of almost 400 miles. Pakistan is also developing the Taimoor, an anti-ship version of the Ra'ad.Using tools such as Photoshop Vanishing Point to analyze the images, FAS concluded that JF-17 had been armed with the older Ra'ad I. If true, this would put numerous targets within western and northern India within range of nuclear or conventional cruise missiles."There are several air bases in Pakistan located near the border," Johns told Business Insider. "The aircraft would be able to scramble and fly to dispersal bases within Pakistan's borders to get closer to potential targets inside India at a range of 350 to 600 kilometers if desired."There is still considerable uncertainty about the exact capabilities of the Ra'ad. "Observing the differences between the Ra'ad-I and Ra'ad-II missiles raises a few questions," FAS noted. "How was Pakistan able to nearly double the range of the Ra'ad from an estimated 350 kilometers to 550 kilometers and then to 600 kilometers for the newest version without noticeably changing the size of the missile to carry more fuel? The answer could possibly be that the Ra'ad-II engine design is more efficient, the construction components are made from lighter-weight materials or the payload has been reduced."Thus for now, Pakistan's air-launched cruise missile capability will remain a mystery. It is "unclear whether either of the Ra'ad systems has been deployed, but this may only be a question of when rather than if," FAS said. "Once deployed, it remains to be seen if Pakistan will also continue to retain a nuclear gravity bomb capability for its aircraft or transition to stand-off cruise missiles only."And though the JF-17 is a joint Sino-Pakistani aircraft, Johns doubts that China will try to restrain Pakistan from modifying it into a nuclear strike aircraft. "China and Pakistan have enjoyed economic and technical partnership for a long time," Johns said. "It is suspected that Pakistan received a blueprint for its first nuclear device from China. The JF-17s were not built for a nuclear mission in the Chinese air force. Nonetheless, Pakistan seems to be preparing it for this capability since the Mirage III and V aircraft are aging."Pakistan's main delivery system for its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-with-nuclear-weapons-2017-11">estimated 170 nuclear weapons </a>will continue to be ballistic missiles, which include at least six models of road-mobile rockets. But extending the range of Pakistani aerial nuclear weapons will only exacerbate the potential for nuclear war. Both Pakistan and India are already developing multiple warhead, or MIRV, versions of their ballistic missiles, and Pakistan is working on short-range, dual-use ballistic missiles. India and Pakistan have fought four wars — and numerous border clashes — since the Indian subcontinent was partitioned in 1947. In 2019, Pakistan made veiled <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pakistan-clings-to-nukes-after-embarrassing-air-strikes-by-india-2019-2">nuclear threats</a> after Indian aircraft bombed Kashmiri militant bases in Pakistan."This context presents an even greater need for transparency and understanding about the quality and intentions behind states' nuclear programs to prevent mischaracterization and misunderstanding," Johns concluded.Michael Peck is a defense writer whose work has appeared in Forbes, Defense News, Foreign Policy magazine, and other publications. The ability to live and thrive outside the US, with free healthcare to boot, has long made me feel survivor's guilt for enjoying that stability.There are trade-offs to Canadian life: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canada-housing-crisis-bubble-imploding-real-estate-prices-rent-decline-2023-11">Astronomical housing costs</a> caused by foreign investment and government policy make me worry that when my child is an adult, they won't be able to afford rent, much less buy a home.I'm also disabled and cannot work full time. If I'm ever without my partner's financial support, I wouldn't qualify for or be able to live on my province's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tvo.org/article/people-cant-live-on-dirt-disabled-ontarians-push-for-odsp-reform">paltry disability benefits</a>.In the end, it's a balancing act.I will forever follow events in American society and politics, even when I someday become a Canadian citizen. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A Pakistani man who tried to set up a gay club was detained in a mental hospital, per The Telegraph.</li><li>Friends told the outlet they had been barred from visiting him, and were concerned for his safety.</li></ul>A man who tried to establish <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-escapes-modern-day-slavery-in-pakistan-2023-11">Pakistan's</a> first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/queer-sober-struggled-to-connect-without-alcohol-2023-5">gay club</a> was detained in a mental hospital by local authorities, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/06/09/man-detained-in-mental-hospital-pakistan-gay-club/">according to The Telegraph.</a>The newspaper reported that the man, who chose to remain anonymous, filed an application to set up an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lgbtq-rights-russia-moscow-gay-bars-supeme-court-extremist-2023-12">LGBTQ+ club</a> in Abbottabad, a military town in northern Pakistan known for being the site of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-last-days-of-osama-bin-laden-11627657283">Osama bin Laden's secret compound</a>. Bin Laden was killed there in 2011.According to The Telegraph, the man wrote in the application filed to the city's deputy commissioner that the club would be a "great convenience and resource for many homosexual, bisexual, and even some heterosexual people residing in Abbottabad in particular."Same-sex intercourse in Pakistan is punishable by imprisonment ranging from two years up to a life sentence.Though prosecutions are rare, the <a target="_blank" href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/62554b85e90e0729fef7bb5f/Pakistan_Sexual_orientation_and_gender_identity_or_expression.pdf">UK's Home Office notes</a> that members of the LGBTQ+ communities in Pakistan may hide their sexuality over fears of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alireza-fazeli-monfared-iran-gay-man-beheaded-family-honor-killing-2021-5">abuse</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gay-lesbian-trans-lgbt-employees-work-discrimination-2019-6">discrimination</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iraq-trans-woman-murdered-by-brother-in-honor-killing-2022-2">honor killings.</a>The Telegraph reported that the application for the proposed club said it was going to be called "Lorenzo gay club," and there would be "no gay (or non-gay) sex (other than kissing").It added that a sign would be visible on the wall warning that no sex would be allowed on the premises, meaning anti-sodomy laws would not be "flouted on the premises," according to the newspaper.The deputy commissioner for Abbottabad did not immediately respond to a Business Insider request for comment.However, his office confirmed receipt of the proposal to The Telegraph, adding that it was under review.The outlet reported that the application had leaked online and caused outrage among local politicians.A member of the far-right Awami Tehreek party threatened to douse the building in petrol and set it on fire if permission was granted, per The Telegraph.According to the British newspaper, the applicant was transferred to the Sarhad Hospital For Psychiatric Disease in Peshawar. His friends told The Telegraph that they had been barred from visiting him, and were concerned for his safety.Before being detained, the applicant told the newspaper: "I talk about human rights, and I want everyone's human rights to be defended."He also told the newspaper that if authorities refused the application, he would take it to court.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) officials are trying to urge the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to work towards the <keyword id="21473003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hybrid-model" source="keywords">hybrid model</keyword> for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy next year through <keyword id="24047280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="back-channel-talks" source="keywords">back-channel talks</keyword>, as per sources. Sources said that back channel talks are going on to make PCB understand why the hybrid model is the best way to go for the tournament and why there cannot be an ICC tournament without the Indian cricket team. The sources have also said that top ICC officials are trying to get Pakistan stop making any statements against India. There are discussions going on with the host Pakistan and other participating teams of the Champions Trophy next year about the schedule and it is likely to be out in a couple of days or so, the sources added. India, the 2017 finalists, will not be playing their matches in Pakistan and their matches will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said the source. PCB wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC) seeking reasons behind India's refusal to travel to Pakistan to play the ICC Champions Trophy next year, Geo News reported. India conveyed its stance of not travelling to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, citing 'security concerns'. Speaking at a press interaction at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi said that PCB is still waiting for a reply from ICC. He also asked not to mix sports and politics."We have sent them [ICC] the questions we had. We are still waiting for their response. I believe that sports and politics are separate and no country should mix the two. Even now I still have positive expectations about the Champions Trophy," Naqvi was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying. He added that all the countries who qualified for the Champions Trophy 2025 are ready to visit Pakistan except India."At this moment, every team that has qualified for the Champions Trophy is ready to come. Nobody has any issues. I will say today also, if India has any concerns, speak to us about them, we can ease those concerns. I don't think there is any reason for them not to visit," he added. Earlier in the month, ICC conveyed to the PCB in writing that India would not travel to Pakistan to participate in the Champions Trophy, which will be held in early 2025.PCB consulted with the Pakistan government on the issue and is looking to present its stance. Top ICC officials trying to convince PCB for adoption of Hybrid model for Champions Trophy: Sources

Iran's choice of weapon, the ground-fired ballistic missile, reflects the distance between the adversaries and the decline of its air force in the decades since the revolution.Iran <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-attacks-israel-with-missiles-after-hezbollah-leader-killing-2024-10">fired</a> an estimated 181 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday. While most were intercepted by Israel's air defenses, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-warships-downed-iranian-missiles-massive-attack-on-israel-2024-10">help from the US Navy</a>, some impacted, causing minor damage. Iran used more ballistic missiles than the 120 it launched during its April barrage, its first direct attack on Israel."Iran uses ballistic missiles as a replacement for aircraft and it has become increasingly sophisticated in using guiding systems to strike distant targets," Nicholas Heras, senior director of strategy and innovation at the New Lines Institute, told Business Insider.Iran and Israel are separated by roughly 800 miles and two countries, Jordan and Iraq. Ballistic missiles can traverse this distance in minutes and in a large attack, like Tuesday's, stretch <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-israel-defense-systems-weapons-in-action-2024-4">Israel's cutting-edge air defenses</a>. Iran has also shown a preference for firing ballistic missiles against less-defended targets closer to home."Iran's large-scale combat use of conventional ballistic missiles in, shall we say, quasi-peace time is unprecedented," Sebastien Roblin, a widely published military-aviation journalist, told BI.Since 2017, Iran has also used its ballistic missiles against ISIS in Syria, following terrorist attacks in Iran and, on one occasion, alleged militant targets <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-67999465">in Pakistan</a>. In January 2020, it targeted an Iraqi airbase hosting US troops following the assassination of a top Iranian commander, leaving <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-lies-again-2020-iranian-missile-attack-us-troop-injuries-2024-10">over 100 American troops</a> with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-iraq-ballistic-missile-attack-us-troops-traumatic-brain-injury-2023-8">traumatic brain injuries</a>. In January 2024, Tehran even used ballistic missiles to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/pauliddon/2024/01/15/iranian-ballistic-missile-strike-kills-prominent-businessman-in-iraqi-kurdistan/">destroy a businessman's residence</a> in neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan."Perhaps Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would argue they are using missiles and drones in the way the US has used air strikes and Tomahawk cruise missiles against regional adversaries," Roblin said. Its recent order of Su-35 Flanker fighters from Russia, which remain undelivered, marks its first fighter aircraft acquisition in over 30 years and could bolster the country's beleaguered air defenses.Using ballistic missiles instead of fighter jets carries significantly less risk."An airplane crashed or shot down is a humiliating news story, particularly in peacetime — a shot down or missed missile isn't," Roblin said.
