Having your family publicly appreciate art while privately denouncing the profession is the pinnacle of the core Indian experience. With notable figures such as the creator of Chicago’s “<keyword id="21837279" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-bean" source="Orion">The Bean</keyword>” and various <keyword id="20128810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-Bhushan" source="keywords">Padma Bhushan</keyword> and Padma Shri recipients in the list, you can rest assured that this article is as Indian parent-friendly as can be. Dominating the list for the sixth year in a row, 70-year-old sculptor <keyword id="21283454" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anish-Kapoor" source="keywords">Anish Kapoor</keyword> continues to exercise his fame as India’s most successful artist alive. According to Hurun, the creator of ‘Cloud Gate’ — or ‘The Bean’ as it is commonly known – amassed a whopping Rs 79.9 crores via a plethora of sculptures last year. If not for The Bean, you might remember Anish from his involvement in the Vantablack controversy, when the artist signed a contract for exclusive rights to the new material’s use in painting and sculpture. Such is the fame that Anish has carved out for himself that he even reigns far above the rest of the Indians on Hurun’s list, monetarily speaking. In second place comes 87-year-old <keyword id="21837278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gulam-mohammed-sheikh" source="keywords">Gulam Mohammed Sheikh</keyword>, a Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee who earned an impressive Rs 24.1 crores last year. The richest woman artist with an inspiring banker-turned-painter story, 87-year-old Arpita Singh, came in third with Rs 22.9 crores. In fact, while artists over 80 years of age litter most of the list — the oldest being the 99-year-old <keyword id="21837277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="krishen-khanna" source="keywords">Krishen Khanna</keyword> in fifth position with 18 crores — there is one unmissable and striking exception. 27-year-old <keyword id="21837276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="raghav-babbar" source="keywords">Raghav Babbar</keyword> became the eighth highest-selling Indian artist after totalling 12.1 crores in sales, providing a fantastic example that even youngsters can make money through art. As for the individual pieces with the biggest price tags, Gulam Mohamed Sheikh’s 2015 piece ‘Ark: Kashmir’ stands far ahead of the competition after being sold at Rs 21 crores last year. In total, four art creations were sold for over Rs 5 crores last year, including designs from Arpita Singh, Anish Kapoor and Raghav Babbar. A sculpture of the Hulk constructed from stainless steel discs and plated fibreglass by Valay Shende was another of the top-selling works in 2023. With a total of Rs 301 crores from 789 art lots sold, this year’s report shows a very clear trend: the demand for Indian art is indubitably on the rise. In fact, the entry point for artists in the top ten almost quadrupled from Rs 2 crores to Rs 7.7 crores in the mere span of three years. These figures helped India land the seventh place globally in terms of art auction turnover, according to Hurun. "With rising middle-class incomes, our expectation is that Indian art will become one of the top preferred choices to 'invest' in a growing asset class and 'spend' on a meaningful lifestyle addition,” explains Anas Rahman Junaid, founder of Hurun India. He argues that India being one of the world’s oldest civilisations lends it an exponentially higher intrinsic art value compared to the status quo. This recognition will likely continue to help the Indian art sector grow at a good pace in the coming years.

Brain stroke is the second most common cause of death in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> with one patient succumbing to the disease every four minutes, a top health expert flagged on Thursday. Padma Shri awardee Dr (Prof) MV <keyword id="272876" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="padma-srivastava" source="Orion">Padma Srivastava</keyword>, who is the most renowned neurologist in the country and is a Professor of Neurology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, participated in the celebration of International Women's Day event at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital today. Delivering a keynote address at the event titled, "Stroke care and its primary preventive methods in poor resource settings in India", Dr <keyword id="5915" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="srivastava" source="Orion">Srivastava</keyword> said, "Stroke is the second most common cause of death in India. About 1,85,000 strokes occur every year in India with nearly one stroke every 40 seconds and one stroke death every 4 minutes." She further referred to the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) and said that most incidents of stroke were recorded in the country. "India bore most of the burden of stroke with 68.6 per cent incidence of stroke. 70.9 per cent stroke deaths and 77.7 Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) lost. These figures are alarming for India with many living in poor resource settings. Another alarming and important finding of the GBD 2010 stroke project is 5.2 million (31 per cent) strokes were in children aged less than 20 years. The stroke burden is greater in India and more so among younger and middle-aged people," she said. The health expert flagged the lack of necessary infrastructure to deal with the alarming data in the country. "In spite of these alarming figures, many Indian hospitals lack the necessary infrastructure and organization required to treat stroke patients quickly and efficiently and do not deliver adequate stroke care. The stroke services across the country especially in public sector hospitals are deficient in many aspects," Dr Srivastava said. The Padma Shri awardee further listed the solutions to boost the infrastructure needed to tackle the rising numbers. "One of the solutions for this deficiency in rich and poor resource settings in India is to adopt Telestroke models in poor resource settings. Implementation of Telemedicine / Telestroke facilities is an important step for bridging the economically and geographically challenged and underprivileged sections of the society," she said. This program also included inspirational talks by three distinguished faculty members of the hospital. One patient succumbs to brain stroke every four minutes in India says expert

"She developed pneumonia in both lungs and needed ventilator support. However, she sustained a cardiac arrest and passed away," it said. Nominations and recommendations Both the nominations and recommendations for the group of Padma awards have to be done only online on the Padma portal <a href="http://www.padmaawards.gov.in">www.padmaawards.gov.in</a>. Any citizen of India can make the nomination or recommendation. Self-nominations are also allowed. The nomination or recommendation must contain the complete details asked in the format provided in this portal for this purpose. A citation is also called for including a narration that can run to about 800 words which will clearly bring out the exceptional or distinguished achievement or service of the person or organization nominated or recommended or self-nominated for the Padma award in their respective field or discipline. All the necessary details asked must be carefully filled in for the nomination to be considered. About Padma Awards Any person or organization can apply for the Padma awards without any distinction to caste, race, occupation, gender or position. Padma Vibhushan seeks to recognize the exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan identifies the distinguished service of higher order and Padma Shri appreciates the distinguished service in any discipline or field. The MHA communication requests that every effort must be spared to find the suitable persons for the Padma awards from among women, weaker sections of the society, Divyang persons, SCs and STs who really deserve to be given this award. No Government servant who is working in the PSUs is eligible for these awards excepting doctors and scientists. Rules governing the Padma Awards The Padma awards are not given posthumously excepting in some highly deserving cases. Padma Award can be conferred on a person only if five years have elapsed after the conferment of the earlier Padma award except in some deserving cases. The President of India presents these awards consisting of a Sanad (Certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The names of the awardees are published in the Gazette of India. The recipients will also get a replica of the medallion which they can wear during any ceremonies or events. The Padma award is not a title and it must never be used as a suffix or prefix to the awardees’ name. The total number of awards given in a year will not exceed 120.

Fondly called ‘Dadaji’ or ‘Mahashayji,’ Gulati dropped out of fifth grade when he was in Pakistan and joined his father, Chuni Lal’s spice business. Today, that business has become a Rs 1500 crore empire which runs the masala company, about 20 schools and a hospital. Gulati was born in 1923 in Sialkot, Pakistan. After the partition in 1947, he moved to India and stayed in a refugee camp. To make ends meet, he opened a store in Delhi’s Ajmal Khan Road, Karol Bagh and officially established MDH in 1959. He put his heart and soul into his business that he started in remembrance of his father. From there, he built the entire group that eventually became one of the country’s leading spices manufacturers expanding to 15 factories. Gulati was a dedicated entrepreneur who did not take an off even on Sundays. He would make daily rounds of factories, markets and meet dealers to supervise and make sure everything was running smoothly. He soon took our Indian spices to an international level by exporting to various parts of the world, including the UK, Europe, UAE, Canda, etc. Today, MDH Masala exports its products to more than 100 countries. Gulati’s son manages the overall operations now and his six daughters handle distribution region wise. According to The Economic Times, in 2017, Gulati was the highest paid entrepreneur at the age of 94 and took home more Rs 21 crore as salary. It is said that it was his motivation to work and quality of products offered at an affordable price that made him the king of spices. In fact, he was also a king of hearts as 90% of his salary went to charity. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the country, in 2019. Gulati also became his company’s biggest brand ambassador and was visually familiar to a vast swathe of the population. Women dominated this year's <keyword id="6391019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-awards">Padma awards</keyword> for sports with tennis star Sania Mirza and ace shuttler <keyword id="30618" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saina-Nehwal">Saina Nehwal</keyword> getting the nod for the Padma Bhushan, while archer <keyword id="86231" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepika-Kumari">Deepika Kumari</keyword> was chosen for the Padma Shri here today. 

	All three were in sublime touch last year and brought the country laurels in their respective sports. 
 Sania enjoyed the most sensational run, clinching nine titles -- including two Grand Slams last year with Swiss great Martina Hingis. The exceptional performance propelled her to the top of the <keyword id="935171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WTA-doubles-rankings">WTA doubles rankings</keyword>. 

	The 29-year-old is currently competing in the Australian Open in Melbourne, where she has reached the women's doubles quarterfinals with Hingis. 
 Saina has also been in spectacular touch, winning silver medals at the All England and World Badminton Championship last year besides clinching the India Open Super Series and <keyword id="2039194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Syed-Modi-Grand-Prix-Gold">Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold</keyword>. 

	Deepika, on the other hand, won a silver at the Archery World Cup Final besides bronze medals at the World Cup Stage II and the Asian Team Championships. 
 

	Saina, who is in the country to compete in this week's Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold Tournament, said the honour has left her surprised. Interestingly, the 25-year-old had expressed her displeasure at being ignored for the award last year. 
 
 

	"It is a great honour and I want to thank the Ministry for giving me the award. I am very happy with the way the last year has gone, I have been performing well. I reached World No.1 last year and now I am World No.2. I am sure this award will give me more motivation to do well further this year," Saina said. 
 

	"It came as a complete surprise to me. I had no clue. I did not expect at all. There was no news of it at all. When I think that I am just 25 and I have received this award, it makes me feel great. But it is still a long way to go." 
 

	Saina was left disappointed after the Sports Ministry decided to reject her application for the award in January last year, citing norms. 
 

	The ministry had picked two-time Olympic-medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar for the honour last year. 
 

	Saina was bestowed the Khel Ratna and Padma Shri in 2010 and also received the Arjuna Award in 2009. 
 

	The 21-year-old Deepika, meanwhile, had also won the team silver along with Laxmirani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly in the World Championships.
