These figures helped India land the seventh place globally in terms of art auction turnover, according to Hurun. "With rising middle-class incomes, our expectation is that Indian art will become one of the top preferred choices to 'invest' in a growing asset class and 'spend' on a meaningful lifestyle addition,” explains Anas Rahman Junaid, founder of Hurun India. He argues that India being one of the world’s oldest civilisations lends it an exponentially higher intrinsic art value compared to the status quo. 'Super 30' fame Anand Kumar launches 'Super 10 Scholar' initiative

Brain stroke is the second most common cause of death in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> with one patient succumbing to the disease every four minutes, a top health expert flagged on Thursday. Padma Shri awardee Dr (Prof) MV <keyword id="272876" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="padma-srivastava" source="Orion">Padma Srivastava</keyword>, who is the most renowned neurologist in the country and is a Professor of Neurology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, participated in the celebration of International Women's Day event at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital today. Delivering a keynote address at the event titled, "Stroke care and its primary preventive methods in poor resource settings in India", Dr <keyword id="5915" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="srivastava" source="Orion">Srivastava</keyword> said, "Stroke is the second most common cause of death in India. About 1,85,000 strokes occur every year in India with nearly one stroke every 40 seconds and one stroke death every 4 minutes." She further referred to the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) and said that most incidents of stroke were recorded in the country. "India bore most of the burden of stroke with 68.6 per cent incidence of stroke. 70.9 per cent stroke deaths and 77.7 Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) lost. These figures are alarming for India with many living in poor resource settings. Another alarming and important finding of the GBD 2010 stroke project is 5.2 million (31 per cent) strokes were in children aged less than 20 years. The stroke burden is greater in India and more so among younger and middle-aged people," she said. The health expert flagged the lack of necessary infrastructure to deal with the alarming data in the country. "In spite of these alarming figures, many Indian hospitals lack the necessary infrastructure and organization required to treat stroke patients quickly and efficiently and do not deliver adequate stroke care. The stroke services across the country especially in public sector hospitals are deficient in many aspects," Dr Srivastava said. The Padma Shri awardee further listed the solutions to boost the infrastructure needed to tackle the rising numbers. "One of the solutions for this deficiency in rich and poor resource settings in India is to adopt Telestroke models in poor resource settings. Implementation of Telemedicine / Telestroke facilities is an important step for bridging the economically and geographically challenged and underprivileged sections of the society," she said. This program also included inspirational talks by three distinguished faculty members of the hospital. We were always interested in places and peoples. We delighted in reading the atlas and dictionaries. In the last 50 years there have been so many places which were our dream destinations, and which one has now visited……… and many places like Machu Picchu that one has not! Perhaps it is still not too late. Because of our father’s immense love for travel and discovery we saw so much of India. The first heritage site that I ever visited was at the age of nine. That was Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu and the Temple of the Tooth and the Botanical Gardens in Kandy in Ceylon. All of these were early influences and have influenced my design sensibilities. I have a very contemporary mindset but one that is also deeply grounded in our own heritage. This is because one has had the good fortune of travelling through the length and breadth of India. Much as one has enjoyed the cultures of other countries, I have a deep and constant curiosity about our own country. All this informs the way I work. As far as design education is concerned, I became a designer by accident – serendipitously so! The study of literature and Hindustani classical music enriched my mindscape. I do not have formal training in design but grew up surrounded by design…….. with my father visiting many auction houses and kabadiwalas in Lucknow. It fills me with quiet pride that, as a woman without any formal training in design, I became the first designer in India, man or woman, to be conferred the <keyword id="25105" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="padma-shri" source="Orion">Padma Shri</keyword> in 1992. I was reasonably young to be bestowed this honour and I thought at that time that it would open the floodgates to many more interior designers. I have also had the distinction of being the first architect or designer from India to be invited to give an illustrated talk in 2003, at the National Building Museum in Washington DC. This museum is the most visited museum of architecture in the world. Its atrium is the venue of the first presidential ball after a new president has been sworn in. In 2014, I was appointed Chairperson of the Board School of Planning and Architecture in Bhopal, a National Institute of Excellence. That was also a first! But, if you ask me whether I was working towards breaking these glass ceilings, then the answer would be an emphatic no! These happened along the way, as a natural progression in a career in which one had put in much hard work. In my profession one is as good as one’s last project. That gets one more work and not because they like your face. No client is going to spend millions of dollars commissioning you to design their hotel if they do not believe in your talent and your ability to deliver. <div type="image" title="05 South Drawing Room, Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi" msid="98578011" hostid="261" sizebytes="111308" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;South Drawing Room, Rashtrapati Bhawan&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> From 1985 to 1989, I worked on the restoration and conservation of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and in 1988 to 1989 on Hyderabad House. That was the first time that HH was closed for nine months because it was not just the interior decoration that was attended to but also all the interior architecture and services like air conditioning. I designed both the decrepit courtyards in a Lutyensesque style and restored the gardens in Hyderabad House. As far as British buildings in New Delhi are concerned, I had the great privilege of working in the Prime Minister’s Office and Secretariat in South Block. And am happy to note that it has remained unchanged through the tenures of the last nine Prime Ministers. The primary reason for this was the brief from the former PM, Rajiv Gandhi…… “do not design this Office for me but design it for the Prime Minister of India”. I followed this brief and worked on the building as these I firmly believe belong to the nation. His second brief was that he wanted his executive chair to be the same height as his visitors’ chairs. These are all very telling traits of character. I also designed the official residence of the Prime Minister along with restoring the two buildings that comprise the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum. In New Delhi one has also designed the interiors of the British Council Building and Library. In my career this has been a landmark project because this is the largest of their 80 institutes worldwide. It was inaugurated in 1992 by HRH the Prince of Wales. When we were presented to him, he had a very interesting conversation with me regarding the buildings on either side of the British Council. He certainly has a keen eye for architecture. <div type="image" title="03 National Assembly Building in Thimpu, Bhutan" msid="98578068" hostid="261" sizebytes="195996" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;National Assembly Building, Bhutan&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Another landmark building for me in 1989 was the <keyword id="1142396" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="parliament-building" source="Orion">Parliament Building</keyword> in Bhutan called the National Assembly Building. For me, this was a completely new area of research. In those days so little was known of the art and architecture of Bhutan and neither were any books available. Immersive travelling through Bhutan, to familiarise myself with its architecture and its arts and crafts became essential. His Majesty’s office appointed as my guide, Dasho Khandu who was a living encyclopaedia on Bhutanese art and architecture. These have been amazing projects of learning for me. I like to deeply research new places and new cultures. So maybe, at the end of the day, I think this profession chose me and one is fortunate as this process of working suits my mindset. In a long design career of 50 years, I had a break in 1998. I had simply fallen off a ladder in the house and had fractured two of my cerebral vertebrae. That is when I decided I would stop designing hotels which I had done for the past almost 30 years. At that point I thought I would just design residences in and around India and not travel out to Egypt, Bhutan, England, Timbuktu, etc. But life had other plans! I went on to design a large residence in Sri Lanka and was commissioned to design a boutique hotel in the old city of Lahore. Sadly, that project was eventually abandoned. When I was in Lahore for their Literary Festival at the end of February this year when I saw this building standing as is, it made me quite nostalgic. Lahore is a beautiful city and the people are very hospitable. Along this design journey many institutions have asked me to come to give illustrated lectures. For the ‘Millennium Book on Delhi’, I was one of the eight contributors who wrote an extended essay on ‘The Planning of New Delhi’. <keyword id="118548" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oxford-university-press" source="Orion">Oxford University Press</keyword>, the publishers of the book have a world-wide reach. That is how the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard University heard of this unknown Indian and invited me to give an illustrated talk. Thus began a parallel career in being a speaker. Since Harvard one has given many lectures in many universities and institutions in the US, the UK and in South East Asia on design, architecture, conservation, literature, on ‘Mughal Jewellery as a Statement of Empire’, world heritage cultural sites in India and on social entrepreneurship. One has always believed that women such as oneself are privileged because we are educated. Never mind that we belong to the working classes! We must, with humility and gratitude, help those that are less fortunate. One has been deeply associated with ‘Satyagyan Foundation’ which was an affiliate of ‘World Literacy Canada’. Based in Varanasi, we have worked in about 400 slum areas and have altogether made 23,000 women literate. One has also been associated with ‘Save a Mother’ which was started by the amazing Dr Shiban Gunju. He has reduced the mortality rate of pregnant women by 93%. One was the founding member and last chairperson of ‘Umang’, an NGO that worked for the betterment of street children. These have been my interests and each has been a milestone. Another milestone was co-authoring ‘The Lucknow Cookbook’ with my mother. It is now in its tenth print run and has been declared a classic by Aleph, the publishers. More recently I produced and edited the large formatted book, ‘Kala - Essays on Contemporary Design Aesthetics’ which was launched in Dubai in 2019 by Sheikh Nahan and in October 2022. It had its first proper launches in Milan and London by Artize of the Jaquar Group. In November 2022, it was launched in New York and most recently in February 2023 at the ‘Lahore Literary Festival’. Every stage in life has its own milestones particularly if one is also a wife, a mother and a grandmother. All working women are constantly challenged because we live parallel lives. For me every project, whether large or small, has been a challenge. It has all added to my body of work and to my learning curve. I have never thought of myself as a woman doing all these things……. I think one creates one’s own benchmark and this is the way one has moved forward. I am still working and writing more books as our daughter, the award-winning architect <keyword id="8435490" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kohelika-kohli" source="Orion">Kohelika Kohli</keyword>, has taken over the business of running K2India. She has just launched her new brand of furniture called KOKO by K2India. One feels justifiably proud that one must have done something right. The actor, whose name was announced among the Padma awardees on the eve of the Republic Day, said 2023 has begun on a good note. "It has been a year of awards for 'KGF 2' and 'Aranyak'. But this (Padma Shri) was the best of all because this encapsulated my entire body of work. It encapsulates everything, the commercial successes, the songs that are so eternal that people remember," <keyword id="6544" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="raveena" source="Orion">Raveena</keyword> told PTI. The actor, who ruled the 90s cinema with hits such as "Mohra", "Dilwale" and "Dulhe Raja" while also making a mark in off-beat movies such as "Daman", "Satta" and "Shool", made her successful streaming debut with Netflix series "Aranyak" in 2021. She also played an important role in "KGF: Chapter 2". "It feels good that there are people watching and appreciating you. I thank everyone who has been with me on this journey and supported me throughout," the actor she said. Zoho's ManageEngine to hire 1,000 people this year as part of expansion plans

In a recent conversation with her logistics partner, Maersk, the octogenarian opened up on her inspirational entrepreneurship journey and how she discovered her grit to move forward and build a world-renowned empire in the food industry today. Mrs. Bector had always enjoyed making puddings, biscuits, cakes, and salads. She experimented with flavours to create new dishes every day and invited people over to taste. She especially liked making ice creams. Having done a vocational course in dairy technology from <keyword id="48276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab-agricultural-university" source="Orion">Punjab Agricultural University</keyword>, which taught her to make basic flavours, she experimented with different topics and ingredients and developed 40 new flavours of ice creams even before starting Cremica! Word spread about her products, and she started getting orders from all over Punjab, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Soon, Bector began catering for parties, events, and weddings — and all alone. She had to work for up to 18 hours a day to accommodate the ever-increasing orders. However, she did not let it affect her responsibilities as a mother. Undivided attention to her children coinciding with her expanding business meant that cooking had to be reserved for the night—something that did not deter Bector. “My children used to attend boarding school at the time, and whenever they were home for their holidays, my focus was always to spend time with them. I was very determined that I would not neglect my children,” emphasizes Bector. The entrepreneur who wowed her friends with her cooking was often told to turn her passion into a commercial business. Seeing herself succeed in creating a taste for western dishes such as puddings, bread, and pizzas also motivated her. With this encouragement from friends and family, her advent into the business started with setting up a humble stall at a local fete. To her dismay, she was allotted a space right next to Kwality, a brand that was famous for its ice creams. Getting dejected, she wondered whether anyone would even be interested in her novice brand. But to her surprise, people thronged her stall until her ice creams were sold out! With the influx of orders that she was receiving, she finally decided to take her home kitchen to greater heights. With sound business advice from her husband, the foundation for Cremica was laid in Mrs. Bector’s backyard with a humble sum of money. The brand also collaborated with Quaker Oats, Chicago, and brought eggless mayonnaise to India. To date, Cremica holds dominance in eggless mayonnaise and supplies it to HORECA enterprises all over India. Mrs. Bector shares that logistics are vital in her business since the products must reach the buyers on time. Having grown from humble beginnings to now exporting across 65 countries to expand, even more, a strong and reliable logistical partnership became a crucial factor in her success and growth. The Miranda House alumna was still studying when she got married. Not paying heed to society’s negative perceptions of working women, Mrs. Bector kept doing what she did best—cooking! Maybe coming from such a strong women’s institution ensured that she never let anyone else dictate how her life would turn out be. Her motto was to be brave in the face of other people’s beliefs. “I enjoy cooking because I am creating something new with my own hands and I am proud of my ability to do it. So, I was determined not to listen to anybody else’s opinions on what I ‘should’ do,” says Bector. What she didn’t realize was how much she was inspiring other women who had always longed to work but had lacked the will for it. Receiving a Padma Shri as a woman from Ludhiana was almost considered an impossibility at the time. Her achievement of this award is an inspiration to young women; they can also aspire to build their careers and get recognized for it. “Nobody is perfect in life, including me. And, I remember I wrote in my essay that they should start teaching science from Class 5 and not Class 7 or 8 because, otherwise, in the competitive exams we are at a disadvantage. And, believe it or not, the school accepted it," she told Business Insider. Godbole holds the Padma Shri, the highest civilian honour in India, as dearer because it is "like your parents patting you on the back." Women in India who have been conferred with the Padma Shri award usually come from the fields of art and music, medicine, health, and social work. However, Godbole is a rare case where the work of a woman from science has been recognised. I grew up in what one would call a typical middle-class family. But, they had always set a very high value on education. And, I grew up in Pune, which is in Maharashtra. It used to be called — at least once upon a time — the Oxbridge of India. So, it's a city well-known for its education. I studied in an all-girls school, which was perhaps the first English high school that was also a girls’ high school founded in Maharashtra — perhaps even in India. We were never taught general science, till 7th class. We were only taught home science. And, in 7th grade there used to be a scholarship called the State Merit Scholarship examination in which there used to be one paper on general science. Since I used to be pretty good in mathematics, my teachers actually took the trouble of working after hours with me. And that's when I started learning science. In fact, at the time, one of my class teacher’s husband — who was a science teacher — offered that I could talk to him in the evenings at his home, and he introduced me to many things outside the books in science. He taught me to read science magazines, and then I started taking part in science essay competitions because of him. This is how my science interest began. How does it feel to be among one of the few dozen women said this to win international accolade and recognition in the scientific field? OK, you know, I really wish people would stop thinking of us women scientists as women scientists. We happen to be scientists who happen to be women. But, I really look forward to the day when one is not slotted as a woman scientist. This is just my feeling and hope that I'm trying to express. But yes, I think I'm quite happy. Of course, I'm happy on a personal level. You don't do research for getting recognition. You do research for the joy of it. ... I think women getting these awards does have an additional plus side to it. It tells young girls that there is nothing special about it. That no, gender does not, and cannot play a role in it. A man and a woman can equally really get the honour. And, to me, that is actually one of the very best things that happens when women get awards. Why don't you tell us a little bit about your field of study? That's a question dear to my heart because that's what I've been doing for the last 50 years. Firstly doing it, then teaching it and finally doing research in it. The general subject that I'm working on is what we can call particle physics. And, the other word for the same subject is high energy physics. ... This is really kind of a study of what are the most fundamental constituents of nature and how those constituents are put together. The subject is somehow very interesting and very difficult to unravel at the same time because it's like completing a puzzle made out of Lego pieces. You want to understand what is the size and shape of the different Lego pieces which make the whole. And we're not allowed to take things apart, right? That is, to some extent, the nature of the work. ... The point is that efforts that have gone on trying to understand this have given us, for example, lasers, the Internet as well as semiconductors. Therefore, this kind of journey is at the heart of all matter. It has been going on for centuries, actually, almost two centuries. It has produced byproducts for our technology just because some of the things people have investigated, they have done it just for the heck of it. Then, what is the one piece of advice or word of caution that you would like to share with girls aspiring to join the scientific community? There is no word of caution. I mean frankly, I think whether you are studying science arts, or commerce, gender is not an issue — ever. Your gender cannot play a role in this. What plays a role is your intellectual abilities and your interest. There is nothing special about studying science compared to studying history. Each has its value. Each has its interest. And, one should just follow one's own mind. That is the one piece of advice I would give — that follow your own mind. Don't let others tell you whether maths is not for you or physics is not for you.
