IPO-bound <keyword id="2808667" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oyo" source="Orion">OYO</keyword> on Thursday said it has appointed <keyword id="10052750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prakash-padariya" source="Orion">Prakash Padariya</keyword> as the Chief Information Security Officer for IT and security teams. ''In his role at OYO, Prakash will helm a security strategy for OYO's systems globally, including regions such as India, SEA (Southeast Asia), Europe, the USA and the UK,'' the hospitality technology platform said in a statement. At OYO, Prakash will lead the operations for teams working specifically for IT and cyber security services. He will also be responsible for leveraging technologies such as Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence to enhance the cyber security functions. Padariya joins OYO from the Netherlands-headquartered online payment solutions provider PayU, where he had served in a similar role, the statement said. While, OYO founder Ritesh Agarwal has <a href="https://skift.com/2019/11/11/oyo-ceo-claims-backer-softbank-isnt-trying-to-sway-its-hotel-strategy/">denied any interference</a> from Son in OYO’s business, a source confirmed that there was pressure on Agarwal from investors. This was one of the reasons why Agarwal <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/inside-oyo-hotels-founder-ritesh-agarwal-s-1-5-bn-share-buyback-plan-119091700522_1.html">reportedly wanted</a> to buy back shares from existing investors in November 2019. It is another matter that the buyback funded by bank loans helped OYO nearly double its valuation to $10 billion from $5 billion, at a time when it also reported its losses to be six times higher at ₹2,384.7 crore. The pressure was passed down the corporate hierarchy at OYO, according to sources. “You are either OYO or you are not. You will realise it in 2 months of joining. The pressure, the way we work, the aggressive stance they take, the timelines and all these things, many people will not like,” an existing employee told Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. When Business Insider first wrote about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/oyo-to-layoff-2000-employees/articleshow/72887138.cms">OYO laying off thousands of employees</a>, an OYO spokesperson said the decision was based on performance and merit. “In order to ensure this meritocracy based performance evaluation programme thrives, OYO continuously tracks performances of the individuals and depending on the results (a grading based system) and the individual’s interests, we may replace some candidates after giving them the opportunity to go through a performance improvement programme,” OYO had said. Everything works during good times A former employee said that just using the name ‘OYO’ was enough to make a sale and employees were judged on their numbers – the sales they have cracked, whether they are making enough calls, have enough lined up contracts and more. The grading system worked well until the pressure started building up. While OYO came face to face with complaints from users and hotel owners, the sales staff suffered, said the employees Business Insider spoke to. But instead of fixing the problem, OYO went about fixing the symptoms. The company had a profile called “Transformation managers” ⁠— people who overhauled hotel decor for more appeal— and that profile was dropped and everyone was transferred to the ‘Business Development’ role, said one of the employees Business Insider spoke to. “For one area, there are too many Business Development Managers than what is required. Because of this, there is increased competition. Also, OYO’s image in the market is not good right now which is why not many hotels are enthusiastic about signing up,” said another employee. The same duplication of efforts possibly led to the mis-selling and, later, job losses. “Unfortunately, some roles at OYO will become redundant as we further drive tech-enabled synergy, enhanced efficiency and remove duplication of effort across businesses or geographies. The latest message from the founder indicates that OYO will change gears for 2020. “Focus on profitable locations and buildings and avoid growth that dilutes our margins,” Agarwal wrote. But the panic has already set in. Sources told Business Insider that freshers who are just a few months into the system as well as others who have been with OYO for long are sending SOS messages out – looking for jobs and wanting to move out of the system before the sun comes down upon them. INTERVIEW: Pepper Content skip the traditional Middle East route, heads directly for the US market

<ul><li>Volatility will continue to plague stocks in 2023 as well with focus shifting to a soft landing and subsequent economic recovery.</li><li>Past recessions show that even as exports and India’s economic growth tend to slow down, recovery is expected to be faster.</li><li>While concerns over recession and interest rates will continue, the second half of the year will factor in the general election outcome. </li></ul>Equities have had a rough ride in 2022 and the new year is likely to be another volatile year. Volatility will continue to plague markets in 2023 too, but markets are still expected to generate positive returns next year. After swinging 20% in 2022, equities are going to end 2022 with 5% gains – despite high inflation, rising interest rates and the dollar’s persistent strength. Some of these concerns are likely to spill over into 2023 as well. But the debate is now centred around a soft landing by leading developed economies and a gradual economic recovery. It’s not surprising that many strategists believe that the benchmark <keyword id="2931774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty50" source="Orion">Nifty50</keyword> could oscillate between 17,000 and 20,000 in 2023. Even if the world slips into a recession, India is expected to see much lower contraction in economic growth compared to other economies. According to a Bank of America analysis of recessions across three decades, India’s growth contracts by 180 basis points in a recession, compared to 280 basis points seen in the USA. Bank of America says that economic growth contraction for India is less protracted (1-3 quarters against 2-7 quarters for the USA) and India also recovers faster. This view is also echoed by Morgan Stanley, which says, “Emerging markets are likely to benefit from a relatively more benign world vs. 2022, and India's trailing outperformance could take a breather in H1 2023, given relative valuations.” Volatility expected to spill over into the new year too The volatility that hit markets in 2022 because of factors including the Russia-Ukraine war, inflation, and recession fears in the US is expected to spill over into the new year as well. This is because central banks across the world are still battling inflation and higher interest rates will impact growth. In India, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has also voiced his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-hikes-repo-rate-by-35-bps-taking-rates-to-a-high-of-6-25/articleshow/96045841.cms">opinions on handling inflation</a>, having hiked rates five times this year. Das, in his recent monetary policy statement, said that due to the geopolitical uncertainty and financial market volatility, further calibrated monetary policy action is needed to keep inflation expectations “anchored”, saying that the RBI will keep an “Arjuna’s eye” on inflation and react as needed. “The year 2022 has been volatile for markets – both India and global. 2023 is going to be no exception to that. With inflation still being one of the key factors to watch out for, it would be interesting to see how things unfold and how swiftly central banks adapt to it. Indian markets have outperformed global peers by a margin,” said Srikanth Subramanian, CEO of investment platform Kotak Cherry by Kotak Investment Advisors. Besides, there is continuing fear around recession hitting major global economies in 2023. “Key point to note here is if recession hits hard, then India will also face the heat and it will be very difficult for Indian markets to stay decoupled for long,” said Subramanian. The sharp fall in <keyword id="123399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-markets" source="Orion">US markets</keyword> indicate recession fears among investors as the benchmark index Dow Jones Industrial Average is down by over 10% in 2022 so far while the tech-heavy Nasdaq has tanked over 30% so far this year. At the same time, Indian markets have been quite resilient but may not remain so for long if a <keyword id="58692" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-recession" source="Orion">US recession</keyword> comes true. Benchmark indices <keyword id="6484188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex" source="Orion">Sensex</keyword> and Nifty50 have gained about 4% in 2022 so far. Morgan Stanley says, “If the global economy slips into recession, it would not be good news for India, which exports about 20% of its output.” Second half of the 2023 will factor in the general election outcome While concerns over recession and interest rates will continue, the second half of the year will factor in the general election outcome. “Going into H2 2023, the market should start factoring in its view on the general elections (slated for May 2024) with either outright repositioning or considerable hedging of portfolios,” said a report by Morgan Stanley. Besides, analysts believe markets will improve in the second half of the year given that the inflation is likely to settle by then along with a loosening monetary policy. “Global growth outlook is likely to improve in H2 CY23 (especially US) due to sharp moderation in inflationary pressures in CY23, loosening monetary policy towards end CY23 and lower base,” said Antique Stock Broking in a report. Further, analysts are overweight on financials, consumer discretionary, technology and infrastructure. Morgan Stanley says it is overweight on consumer discretionary, industrials, financials, and technology and underweight all other sectors. Electric vehicles, clean energy, digital transformation and air travel cycle are among the key themes for 2023. “We continue to pursue ideas around clean energy spending, defence indigenisation, a new residential property, auto, and air travel cycle, a multiyear credit cycle for financials and life insurance, digital transformation, and market share concentration, plus horizontal growth for discretionary and staple consumption and electric vehicles as key themes for 2023,” said Morgan Stanley. <ul><li><keyword id="6354525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthcare">Healthcare</keyword> analytics firm <keyword id="2862106" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tricog">Tricog</keyword> has raised $10.5 million in a series B round of funding.</li><li>Using <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">Artificial Intelligence</keyword> and Machine Learning, the startup helps in the wellness, screening and diagnosis of acute as well as chronic heart diseases. </li><li>The latest round of funding is the startup’s series B round, two years post its series A investment. </li></ul>Healthcare analytics firm Tricog has raised $10.5 million in a series B round of funding. The investment comes in from UTEC - The University of Tokyo Edge Capital, Japan; Aflac Ventures, LLC, Japan; TeamFund, USA and Dream Incubator, Japan and also saw a participation from Inventus Capital and Blume Ventures. The startup helps in the wellness, screening and diagnosis of acute as well as chronic heart diseases. Using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, the five-year old startup has helped 3 million patients over the world. It also uses its virtual cardiology services for help in remote clinics. The latest round of funding is the startup’s series B round, two years post its series A investment. “We have witnessed phenomenal growth from our initial investments, both in terms of footprints in new geographies as well as revenue growth. Through this round of investment, we reinforce our commitment to strengthen our AI-powered platform for faster diagnosis, expand our product line and establish strong presence in Africa and Asia including India, China and Japan,” Dr. Charit Bhograj, CEO &amp; founder said. Tricog’s Insta ECG platform has been deployed in over 2,500 hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres to help diagnose and manage patients with critical cardiac diseases including heart attacks. “We’ve seen Tricog’s evolution from an India-based ECG healthcare startup to an integrated, AI-driven full-stack ‘virtual cardiologist’ platform. Most Indian B2B startups have traditionally focused on Enterprise/SaaS.
