<ul><li>Silicon Valley startup Airbnb has picked up stake in <keyword id="2550719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO-Rooms">OYO Rooms</keyword>, India's largest hotel rooms aggregator.</li><li>Business Insider had interviewed Airbnb's co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk earlier in March.</li><li>Here are excerpts from his thoughts on the potential for Airbnb in India.</li></ul>One of Silicon Valley's hottest startups, Airbnb, is betting big on India. The startup, which is a marketplace for people offering and looking for homestays and was reportedly valued at $31 billion at last count, has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/home-renting-giant-airbnb-invests-in-indian-unicorn-oyo-rooms/articleshow/68670636.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">picked up a stake</a> in a rival hotel rooms aggregator, OYO Rooms, today. Both companies are looking at opportunities to collaborate on a range of projects, including making OYO accommodations available on the Airbnb platform, a source told Business Insider. While Airbnb has not offered an official comment yet, here is an interview with the co-founder of Airbnb, Nathan Blecharzyk, that was conducted before the deal was announced. The following are the edited excerpts of the answers on the India-specific questions, including one about its competition with OYO, received via email on March 13. Q. Airbnb had aimed to sign up 50,000 homestays in India by 2020. How far have you come? And what is your projection for, say, 2025? How big a part of the global business will India be by 2025? Since the last time I was in India (which was early 2016) our community of hosts has gone from strength to strength and the number of Airbnb listings in India has increased by more than 150%. Our loyal community of hosts have welcomed more than 1.25 million travelers during that period, over 60% of which occurred in just the past 12 months. That growth isn’t just limited to foreign travelers; domestic travel on Airbnb in India has increased by 78% in the past year. Travel to emerging economies is expected to increase at twice the rate of travel to advanced economies from now until 2030 and emerging markets like India are leading the way. With over 45,000 listings, India is a key market for Airbnb. More than one million Indians have chosen Airbnb for their travel globally just last year alone, indicating a tremendous demand for Airbnb among the travellers. Needless to say, India continues to be a promising market for us. We are now working towards achieving 1 billion Airbnb users in the next ten years and India will play an important role in helping us achieve that goal. Q. Are you disillusioned by the recent policy developments in India? Has that affected how bullish you are on India? To the contrary, we’re committed to working closely with policymakers in India and we’ve worked diligently with them to promote home sharing. Q. How big a role do discounts play in Airbnb’s business model? Our platform is fuelled by hosts and guests who are loyal to Airbnb because we treat them like members of a community, not commodities. As a result, Airbnb isn’t governed by discounts and cash backs. Q. Other companies like OYO rooms have scaled their business much faster in India. Was it a conscious decision on part of Airbnb to go slow in India? If yes, why? We don’t typically comment on competitors. Travel and tourism is a large and growing industry in India, and there are going to be a lot of winners here. We are deeply committed to our community in India, we have a thriving business and we’re deeply optimistic about our future. Q. Is Airbnb going to remain a product for English-speaking urban elites? Does it not cap the scalability of the business? India is on its way to becoming one of the new ‘centres of influence’ in global tourism, and it’s going to be an engine of our growth, for us as we aim to welcome one billion users onto our platform in the next ten years. We really think Airbnb can be for everyone, and we have started to focus on specific segments and customize the products for those segments. We have our Plus offering, we have a high end luxury offering as well, and we also have Airbnb for Work, which is actually doing very well in India and it grew about four-fold year over year in India with about 6,500 companies that have signed up to do business travel directly with Airbnb. Q. How feasible it is to sell airline tickets in India? It is a heavily competitive market and deep discounts are imperative? We’re not interested in building our own airline or creating just another place on the Internet where you can buy a plane ticket, but there is a tremendous opportunity to improve the transportation experience for everyone. We’re going to explore a broad range of ideas and partnerships that can make transportation better. We haven’t settled on exactly what those will look like. Q. Will it be easier for you to focus on Indian travellers who are headed abroad than to convince Indians to share their homes with strangers? Would that be your approach to evade some of the policy and infrastructure challenges? Global tourism is growing rapidly and as citizens, businesses and policy-makers open up to the sharing economy phenomenon, and we are seeing increased interest in emerging economies like India. Our loyal community of hosts have welcomed more than 1.25 million travelers since 2016, over 60% of which occured in just the past 12 months. Our growth isn’t just limited to foreign travelers. Domestic travel on Airbnb in India has increased by 78% in the past year. India has approx 410 million millennials, that’s more than the entire population of the US. This group increasingly makes up the dominant segment of consumers, and are looking for new and authentic travel experiences. So while India sees close to 1.2 million outbound travellers, the number of domestic guest arrivals on Airbnb in India increased by almost 78%, last year. We are also planning to focus to more on mainstream domestic travel over the course of the next 2 years i.e. by 2020-21 in line with the origin total addressable market of $17.5 billion which is dominated by domestic business, which is 74% of total total addressable market. Here's what Airbnb's co-founder had to say about OYO before the deal was announced

While several Indian startups are planning to tap the Initial Public Offerings (IPO) market as an alternative capital needs, they have already raised <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/market/data/indian-startups-raised-more-money-than-ipos-in-2018-1784121.htm">more money</a> through fundings and financing via the venture capital route, beating other Indian companies that raised money via IPOs this year, CNBC reported citing data from research firm, VCCEdge. Comparing the total amount <a href="https://officechai.com/startups/indian-startups-raised-money-indian-ipos-year/?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts">raised by the companies</a> under the two segments — startups getting funding under the Venture Capital (VC) and other companies listed under IPOs — stats show that while the startups raised nearly ₹449 billion in VC funding rounds in 2018, nearly 25 companies listed on stock exchanges elevated with ₹341.17 billion from investors. In 2017, the companies listed under IPOs raised over ₹772 billion. On the other hand, the startup VC investments were found to be comparatively low, raising ₹243.47 billion. The biggest company under IPO, Bandhan Bank, raised ₹44.7 billion from investors this year. In fact, startups are forging ahead with nearly twice the Venture Capital ( VC) funding this year, as compared to 2017. Separately, the <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/sebi-to-release-startup-listing-guidelines-by-january-20/">Security and Exchange Board of India</a> (SEBI) has recently floated changes in the existing regulations for the startup ecosystem. With this, the regulatory body is looking to provide IPO as a substitute to VC funding. However, the market regulator will release detailed guidelines by January 2019. It is also planning to launch a startup platform, with inputs from Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), for its listing process across sectors — including Information Technology, e-commerce and biotech among others. ‘<keyword id="152045" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unicorn">Unicorn</keyword> club’ India, which is the third -largest for startup ecosystem in India, <a href="http://v">added 8 new unicorns</a> to the list this year, adding up to 18 in total. Private companies with a valuation over $1 billion are the ones making to a ‘unicorn club’. Under the venture capital funding, India’s recent unicorns raised ₹70 billion in its latest round of <a href="https://officechai.com/startups/indian-startups-raised-money-indian-ipos-year/?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts">fundings from international investors </a>such as Naspers and SoftBank among others. For Indian startups, 2018 has been a year of bouncing back as venture capital funding doubles

<ul><li>Following the successful response to its recent brand films #AisiReachGaye and ‘Kalki Kal Dekhenge,’ OYO recently launched a new advertisement with Chitrangada Singh and Kunal Kapoor.</li><li>In the ad, Kapoor loses a bet to Chitrangada and plays golf while wearing a ghagra.</li><li>This unique set of ads from OYO has generated a lot of chatter on social media and has sparked a meme fest.</li><li>We speak to Mayur Hola - Head of Global Brand, OYO and Kavikrut, Chief Growth Officer, OYO about the latest campaign, its target audience and timing.</li></ul>At a time when hospitality brands are observing a silent period, OYO rolled out a multi-film 360-degree campaign with Gul Panag, Kalki Koechlin, Chitrangada Singh and Kunal Kapoor. It was during the peak of COVID that OYO aired its first advertisement during the India VS South Africa ODI match. While it was a risky bet for the brand, especially before its upcoming IPO, to talk about travel without really propagating travelling, OYO’s new campaign has still won many hearts and has also organically trended on Twitter thrice for all of its ads. Last year in December, OYO saw its <a href="https://twitter.com/riteshagar/status/1479737071719759875">busiest month</a> as over a million people booked rooms with the brand for the New Year’s long weekend. We asked OYO whether this campaign was planned for December and delayed due to the sudden surge in cases, Kavikrut, Chief Growth Officer, OYO said no, it felt like the right time now. Explaining why OYO chose January to roll their campaign out, he said, “December was one of the highest travel peaks for India and yet, that's not when you saw this campaign. You're seeing this campaign at a time when you're stuck at home, and you're thinking about being out there either for travel, leisure or for business. You're thinking about where else I could be? And it's at that point of time, we want there to be a recall and memory of OYO in their minds and for what could it be? That's when you zoom back into the features and say, it could be anywhere which is nearby, Assi Reach Gaye ad is about that; you don't need to reach anywhere, you could just stay here. We felt like this is a good time to just put them out there. People will love the films irrespective of the time we are in.” As the whole country relives 2020 and people are stuck at home yet again, they have the space and time to watch new content and absorb it. Mayur Hola - Head of Global Brand, OYO added that any consideration campaign needs to start a little bit ahead of when you want the customer to act, particularly when you decide that the consideration you seek is from a newer audience. “So our intent to do it now is to be a little ahead of the game and not just advertise when things open up and people have already made plans. And a lot of audiences today react spontaneously. Consideration takes a little more time, hence, the need for the campaign that we planned. I don't think anything else plays a role at all in our choice of timing. This is simply consideration and perception that we would focus on and are giving it the time it needs to bed in,” explained Hola. OYO’s first advertisement of 2022, ‘Assi reach gaye’ featured Gul Panag and an adorable kid who stole all the attention. The film showcases how a kid, who hasn’t had a chance to travel due to the pandemic, would react on a long road trip. It takes you through many stages of his journey, starting with the child enjoying the views of the scenic hills, turning to boredom and finally to restlessness after spending hours in the car. Hereon, the film captures the many quirks of a now impatient 4-year-old child, who incessantly nudges his mom from the backseat and asks, “Assi reach gaye?” With over 4000 tweets, this ad trended on number 2 on Twitter. <div type="Youtube" id="ZK7WgxuO6X8" title="Assi Reach Gaye | OYO Rooms Official" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZK7WgxuO6X8/mqdefault.jpg"></div> It is for the first time that the relatively young hospitality brand OYO is targeting Indian families with a huge media splash. Hola mentioned that OYO has seen some very unique use cases, which inspired its latest campaign to some extent, and realised that while the brand has a young perception in the market, it is used by audiences across age groups. Sharing a few examples, he said, “We live in small homes across the country and people sometimes just don't have the space to fight. So on the surface, you have a couple checking into a room but really they're going in there to squabble because they can’t scream at each other at home. I know that feeling. We have unique use cases of people taking a pitstop, studying, spending the night after a party, which is a big one for us; people just found it safer to check into a room nearby wherever they've been partying and not take a long ride by cab back home. So, we're trying to talk about the various audiences who own us already, and reach out to even further audiences, in terms of families and so on. In one way, it is reflective of usage already and in another way, we want to add more to that pool.” Following the successful response to its brand films ‘Assi Reach Gaye’ and ‘<a href="https://youtu.be/ZWt_6msbML0">Kalki Kal Dekhenge,</a>’ OYO released a third ad film last week featuring Chitrangada Singh and Kunal Kapoor. With this film, OYO highlights its app’s ‘search the view’ feature which enables people to discover stays with a view they would like. In the ad, Kunal loses a bet to Chitrangada and plays golf while wearing a ghagra. Within a few hours, this film also trended on Twitter on number three with more than 5,500 tweets. The idea behind these ads, Hola said, is to put OYO’s app at the heart of everything. It promotes different features that the app offers. It will be seen in multiple channels across GEC, News, Infotainment and the Kids genre. It will also promote the first film across its owned PR channels.

OYO is now targeting families through its communications to ring in its next phase of growth

In a series E funding whose details are undisclosed, AirBnB has invested in the Indian hospitality unicorn. Airbnb picks up a stake in its Indian rival Oyo Rooms

<ul><li>Software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform <keyword id="2645087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rategain" source="Orion">RateGain</keyword> intends to raise ₹1,335 crore through this IPO.</li><li>RateGain is seeking a valuation of ₹4,537 crore (about $600 million) at the upper end of the price band.</li><li>RateGain’s grey market premium (GMP) was at ₹85 on December 6.</li></ul>The initial public offering (IPO) of RateGain Travel Technologies will be launched tomorrow, December 7, and it is something that retail investors can get a scoop of, several stock brokerages have suggested. The software-as-a-services (SaaS) platform, which solely focuses on the travel and hospitality segment, intends to raise ₹1,335 crore through fresh as well as offer for sale (OFS). The price band has been set at ₹405-₹425. The lot size has been fixed at 35 shares, meaning a retail investor will have to shell out ₹14,175 to buy the shares. RateGain’s grey market premium (GMP), premium at which investors are comfortable buying the shares before it gets listed on a stock exchange, was at ₹85 on December 6. RateGain is seeking a valuation of ₹4,537 crore (about $600 million) at the upper end of the price band. The stock brokerages, who have previously raised concerns of valuation of digital businesses like Paytm and Zomato, too seem to be comfortable with the valuation being accorded to RateGain. “While there is no listed peer available for a direct comparison to RateGain in the domestic market, its valuations at ~50% discount to unicorns like Zomato and Paytm give comfort on the valuation front. In the new era of internet and AI [artificial intelligence]-based software services, we believe the premium valuation of the company is likely to sustain,” Reliance Securities said in its latest report. A unicorn, in startup parlance, is a firm valued at or over a billion dollars. The brokerage has also recommended retail investors to subscribe to RateGain’s IPO as there is “high growth potential, unique business proposition with minimal competition and valuation comfort.” The company, however, still is under threat of COVID-19 as well as any situation that may disturb the global travel scenario. Arihant Capital has noted that the company has been making a loss since fiscal year 2019 and aggressive investors can subscribe to the IPO for listing gains. Its softwares covers an entire set of data points including pricing, rating, ranking, availability, room description, cancellation policy, discounting and packages, among other things. The company has over 1,434 customers spread across 110 countries. The company counts Lemon Tree, OYO, InterContinental Hotels Group, Kessler Collection, and several other hotels and online travel aggregators (OTAs) as its clients. It also works with online ticketing platforms like GroupOn and distribution companies like Sabre GLBL Inc. “RateGain’s profitability has not been encouraging over the years, due to the acquisition of loss-making entities and higher depreciation (impairment of goodwill),” Reliance Securities added. The company was profitable till FY2019. The company has fixed a price band of ₹553-555 a share for its IPO. The three-day public issue will close on March 16. It plans to use the funds to repay its debt partly. As of September, the company had a total debt of ₹814.48 crore, and it plans to repay at least ₹556.20 crore in debt. The Surat-based company has reserved about 2.20 lakh shares for employees. Half of the issue is reserved for qualified institutional buyers, 35% for retail investors and 15% for non-institutional bidders. Anupam Rasayan’s business has two verticals — life science related to speciality chemicals and other speciality chemicals.
