Citizens face issues in availability of slots and major technical glitches on the Co-WIN app as India kicks off its largest vaccination drive ever

Indian hotel companies have shown resilience during the pandemic and now the markets are celebrating them

The report said that the group is in early talks with Just Dial regarding its latest e-commerce bet – JD Mart. In October 2020, Just Dial had said that it was set to launch its own B2B (business to business) marketplace called JD Mart. The potential and excitement for Just Dial’s new platform comes with the fact that the company already has a strong foothold in the market and a loyal user base. According to a report by financial services firm UBS, the company will be able to leverage its already existing 140 million quarterly unique users and 100,000 paid B2B subscribers to sell JD Mart. “We think Just Dial has developed a superior platform on the backdrop of an interactive user interface along with robust depth and breadth of B2B product offerings. JD's core strength is its large sales force (9,000), which should aid monetizing the new platform,” said the UBS report from October, 2020. JD Mart finds competition from the country’s oldest e-commerce platform IndiaMart, which has had an unchallenged run for 24 years. The company has fixed a price band of ₹553-555 a share for its IPO. The three-day public issue will close on March 16. It plans to use the funds to repay its debt partly. As of September, the company had a total debt of ₹814.48 crore, and it plans to repay at least ₹556.20 crore in debt. The Surat-based company has reserved about 2.20 lakh shares for employees. Half of the issue is reserved for qualified institutional buyers, 35% for retail investors and 15% for non-institutional bidders. <ul><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="5563078" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Divya-Gokulnath">Divya Gokulnath</keyword>, co-founder and director at BYJU’s shares how the startup has seen the busiest three months thanks to lockdown. </li><li>In March and April, BYJU’s added 13.5 million consumers, taking the total to 50 million. </li><li>Even before that, revenue has doubled to ₹2800 crore and the startup plans to go international soon.</li><li>Get the latest news and updates on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/">Business Insider</a>. </li></ul>The <keyword id="23248" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-learning">online learning</keyword> platform, BYJU’s has had its busiest three months. In March and April, BYJU’s added 13.5 million consumers. It was the first to announce that its content would now be available for free for all soon after the lockdown, and that got the $8-billion ed-tech giant, which was already profitable, a new wave of users, many of whom, the company hopes, will pay for the services in the future. The reason why Byju’s could afford free content for over 50 million subscribers is because the company had already doubled its revenue to ₹2,800 crore ($370 million) in the year ending March 2020, revealed co-founder Divya Gokulnath. “We have met our revenue target of ₹2800 crore. This has happened even when our consumer (students) and purchaser (parents) are different,” she said in an exclusive interview with Business Insider. The startup now has 50 million users on its platform, even though paid user count is 3.5 million. But a metric that made all the difference was the engagement rate. Students who used to spend 70 minutes on the app per session and come back twice-thrice a week, now spend 100 minutes per day. “85% of our students renew the courses year after year. That is happening because parents see effectiveness,” she said. Byju and Divya, teachers first The founders, Divya and her husband Byju, were preparing as early as February while the country went into lockdown only on March 25. “Both of us are still teachers first. We are very paranoid about the quality of classes, so the top management at Byju’s are actually all teachers who are taking classes on the app,” said Divya. Byju, who is quarantined in the US, stays up all night to take the classes. “He doesn’t sleep. He is available India, US and Singapore time,” she said with a laugh. In fact, according to Divya, the entire top management at Byju’s are all teachers taking classes on the app. Busiest three months So, in the times of the pandemic, BYJU’s rolled out three new features – it started live classes, introduced new subjects like social studies (history, civics and geography) and also rolled out the app in multiple languages. And this meant, teams worked overtime and put in double the effort to roll out new features within days. “Nobody predicted how things would be. We have opened up a lot of business avenues which we forecasted, it’s just that it’s happening earlier than what we thought. Right now, we are taking one day at a time. We have weekly goals and we break them down into daily goals,” she shared. What’s the new normal? At the helm of India’s biggest online learning app, Divya believes that the new normal will not be 100% online. She instead believes that the new normal will include the best of online learning into a school curriculum. She said that BYJU’s is at that sweet spot, where once a child comes back from school the learning on the app is all they would need. “School is critical for the wholesome development of the child. Every crisis presents an opportunity and this is that inflection point for <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">education</keyword>, where we expect the rise of a blended model of education,” she said. But here’s what online learning has cracked – there are no more backbenchers. “Lockdown has enabled the power of online learning be it students, teachers or parents all are adapting to online learning. Every student now has a front row seat in the class, the concept of backbenchers is gone. And this is an opportunity for students to take up self learning,” she said. A decacorn in the making and new plans According to reports, BYJU’s is now raising funds with a $10 billion valuation set to be India’s third startup to be a decacorn, after Paytm and OYO. While Divya doesn’t comment on the funding plans, she confirms that BYJU’s plans to go international are still very much on the works. “We are planning to go international in the next few months but we are also going deeper in India. 65% of our students are outside the top 10 cities, that showed us it is an aspirational product for students who don’t have access to good education,” she said. The company has said that even though it has zero debt, it has opened avenues for additional funds to explore any growth opportunities that might come their way. Analysts too expect MMT to explore acquisition opportunities. “We expect the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak will lead to consolidation in the OTA space given stretched peer balance sheets, which could lead to more than 10 percentage points of market share gain for MMYT (in hotels) over the next three years,” said a recent report by Goldman Sachs. The company has also secured credit and guarantee facilities of approximately $100 million. “Which includes a $70 million facility from an affiliate of our largest shareholder and the balance from a commercial bank in India,” said the company’s statement. MMT’s top management remained hopeful of the quarters to come as they said that travel has seen recovery since July. “We have begun to see early signs of recovery in our domestic travels business. Our first quarter performance reflects the bulk of the impact the lockdown had on our business. During the quarter, we took painful but necessary fixed cost reductions and fully flexed our variable costs to ensure we had ample liquidity to re-emerge stronger from the quarter ,” said <keyword id="6467279" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deep-Kalra">Deep Kalra</keyword>, Group Chairman of MakeMyTrip. Mumbai metropolitan region reported two new cases of Coronavirus on Thursday (March 19), taking the total number of such cases in Mumbai to 8. One woman had returned from the UK, and another one had a travel history to Dubai. India saw a steep rise in the number of infected cases after 28 new cases were reported from 10 states on Wednesday (March 18), taking the total number of infected people to 184. CM <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> said that the number of suburban trains and buses would be reduced, standees won't be permitted and those seating would be kept at a safe distance as precautionary measures. Mumbai and Pune — the two worst-hit cities with maximum Coronavirus cases — has visibly reduced commuters in trains and buses. However, the number of private vehicles on roads and highways hasn't shown a noticeable decline so far. All beaches in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are near-deserted. Prominent hill stations in the Western Ghats, resorts, wildlife sanctuaries, tourist destinations also run almost empty. All major places of worship like temples, churches, mosques-mausoleums and gurdwaras have shut their doors for devotees. A few religious organisations and sects are offering online prayers, namaz etc. to keep crowds and the virus away. The state already elapsed into the partial shutdown with all schools, colleges, malls, theatres, cinemas, gyms and swimming pools closed till March 31. Besides the suburban trains, the decision could also include the <keyword id="603319" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Metro-rail">Mumbai Metro Rail</keyword>, Monorail and other public modes of transport which have a potential to virtually paralyse the country's commercial capital. Maharashtra currently has 38 COVID-19 positive cases including a 64-year-old coronavirus patient, who passed away at Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital, today. All upcoming local bodies and civic elections in the state have been postponed by three months, the shutdown of academic institutions in urban centres has been extended to cover all educational institutions even in rural areas. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray announced a special ₹45 crore fund to tackle the pandemic to be distributed among the Divisional Commissioners at Konkan and Pune, while ₹5 crore each will be disbursed to Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad and Nashik. The money would be utilised to provide various facilities at the quarantine centres including food, television sets, indoor games like carroms, etc. The district authorities have been authorised to make emergency purchases of ventilators or required medical equipment. Thackeray appealed that those who have been advised home quarantine must voluntarily refrain from stepping out in public to prevent any risk to others. Bollywood celebrities are lining up to invest in new-age companies. Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Hrithik Roshan are some of the many popular investors that startups have attracted. But Malaika Arora has been a part of this club since 2012. This fashionista has been involved with online premium retail startup – The Label Life, which offers high-end clothing, accessories and home decor and also features works of designers like Payal Singhal, Nikhil Thampi, Narendra Kumar, Malini Ramani, among others. Arora made news again earlier in May when she joined global stars like Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez to invest in an Indian yoga fitness chain startup, Sarva. Investing in passion In an interview with Business Insider, Arora talks about how her investments are linked to things she’s passionate about, and she’s not just ‘another’ investor. Arora was introduced to the startup world in 2012 after she identified it as an opportunity early on. “For me, or for anybody, opportunities are presented to you in life. And, some of them you have to grab with both hands. The kind of business that I am in, it allows me to pursue a whole host of other opportunities as well,” said Arora, referring to her main career as an actor. Arora however admits that when she started her journey with The Label Life, she didn’t have too much knowledge or information on the online industry. “I had no clue about the online space. I liked what was presented to me. Also somewhere you’ve got to follow your gut, assess the potential of the business and go ahead,” said the Bollywood star. Today, The Label Life also has offline retail stores in Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh among others. ‘Reflection of me’ Her latest investment has been in Indian yoga startup Sarva, a chain of yoga and fitness studios, which also boasts of pop singer and actor Jennifer Lopez and fiance and baseball legend Alex Rodriguez as co-investors. Sarva, which is building a burgeoning digital community, is currently present in over 91 studios clustering in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru along with other Indian cities. It also recently partnered with OYO Hotel &amp; Homes to set up wellness studios in select properties. Arora’s association with Sarva founder Sarvesh Shashi began with the establishment of the Diva Yoga centres in 2018. “It made me so interested in what Sarva has to offer because it was about something that I already feel connected with, believe in, that is a reflection of me,” she said. Sarva’s move to help yoga and fitness reach out to many more people by introducing digital classes, was another factor that convinced Arora of the partnership. “With Diva Yoga what we are doing is absolute tangible studios. In the digital space, we can connect you with yoga and guided meditation from the comfort of your home at very affordable prices. It seemed like the perfect marriage,” said Arora. Arora has been one of India’s biggest fitness icons, and endorses multiple brands that revolve around health and wellness. But when it comes to her investments, Arora believes it’s an opportunity where she can be more than just a face. “I get a chance to endorse a dime and dozen other things in my life and I do that purely as a face. This goes way beyond just an endorsement,” she said.
