Post the equity dilution in the <keyword id="22756111" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Series-G-funding" source="keywords">Series G funding</keyword>, Agarwal's holdings will increase from 29.97 per cent earlier, to 32.57 per cent post the investment, sources told PTI. According to sources close to the transaction, "Ritesh has invested to protect his ownership dilution in OYO as well as a signal of confidence in the company's prospects. The investment is backed by Singapore-based family offices." <keyword id="20517346" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oravel-Stays-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Oravel Stays Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Oravel Stays Ltd">Oravel Stays Ltd</keyword>, the parent company of OYO, has raised Rs 1,457 crore from a consortium of investors in the latest funding round. The additional equity issuance was approved by 99.99 per cent shareholders in an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on August 8. The additional fundraise values the company at USD 2.4 billion, as the first Series G tranche issued to InCred in July. The investment is being made through Compulsory Convertible Cumulative Preference Shares, each priced at Rs 29, consistent with the valuation of the recent raise in Series G. The capital will be used to support OYO's growth and its global expansion plans, sources said.

Founder Ritesh Agarwal invests Rs 830 crore in OYO's latest funding round; Platform raises Rs 1,457 crore

Hospitality and travel-tech firm <keyword id="2808667" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="oyo" source="Orion">OYO</keyword> on Monday said it will onboard and add 300 hill station hotels to its portfolio by August 2023 to cash in on the summer vacation rush. In north India, the new hotels will be in places such as Manali, <keyword id="193753" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mussoorie" source="Orion">Mussoorie</keyword>, <keyword id="76016" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nainital" source="Orion">Nainital</keyword>, Srinagar, Shimla, Dalhousie, and Haridwar while in the South, it will be Ooty, Munnar, and Kodaikanal, the company said in a statement. Gangtok, Darjeeling, and <keyword id="57704" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shillong" source="Orion">Shillong</keyword> in the East; and <keyword id="6378734" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lonavala" source="Orion">Lonavala</keyword> and Mahabaleshwar in the West will also see new OYO hotels, it added. The company is witnessing a surge in demand for hill stations and the trend will continue throughout the next three months, an OYO spokesperson said. "With our expansion across key hill stations in India, we aim to provide a wide range of options for travellers, while also contributing to the growth of domestic tourism," the spokesperson added. In addition to expansion across hill destinations, OYO is also aiming to add 1,800 new hotels to its portfolio in 2023 as part of its ongoing bid for premiumisation. OYO to bring on board 300 hill station hotels by August

<ul><li><keyword id="7355473" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO-Life">Oyo Life</keyword> currently operates 40,000 beds across 9 cities. </li><li>By 2019 end, it aims to have 100,000 beds.</li><li>OYO has also claimed that it is now the largest ‘long-term’ coliving space. </li></ul>OYO Life has set ambitious target of adding more than twice its beds by the end of the year. It means the co-living venture of OYO will expand from its current 40,000 beds to 100,000. “We expect the co-living market to continue to grow further and we are geared to provide over 100,000 beds by 2019-end,” said Rohit Kapoor, CEO of new real estate businesses at OYO. OYO now claims to be the largest ‘long-term’ coliving space. It currently has an occupancy of 85-90%. “Originally targeted at young professionals and first jobbers, we have been seeing interesting case studies of customers across various stages of life ranging from students, couples, right up to families and senior citizens across diverse income groups, choosing OYO LIFE as their preferred option,” said Kapoor. In September, it also partnered with IIT Delhi and Plaksha University to manage over 500 beds. Oyo claims to provide students with amenities such as surveillance and security, Wi-Fi and food. The prices start at ₹6,500 and goes up to ₹12,999 per bed, per month. According to a report Student Accommodation Provider Association of India (SAPFI) and CBRE, the student housing sector will attract as much as $700 million investment and add 600,000 beds by 2023.

Oyo’s co-living venture wants to expand twice over in two months

Meanwhile, its operating revenue grew three-fold to ₹6456.9 crore. Whereas the company’s valuation has doubled to $10 billion between September 2018 and now. The magical boost in valuation came from the $700 million invested by founder and CEO <keyword id="1670338" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ritesh-Agarwal">Ritesh Agarwal</keyword> in October 2019. The money went into buying back shares from existing investors at a higher price, boosting the company’s value. Infosys plans to hire Google-certified graduates to meet its target of 25,000 US employees by 2022

Indian unicorn OYO has conquered China and is now the country’s largest hotel chain

The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) launched a ‘logout’ movement last month claiming that the business practices of aggregators are unethical. The movement saw hundreds of restaurants delisting from the app. But that’s not the end of it. Zomato’s delivery executives across Mumbai and Bengaluru are protesting for pay cuts. The company is also in the news for reportedly laying off employees at its Gurgaon headquarters. Oyo is in no better position. On one hand, it is battling legal complaints from a Bengaluru-based hotelier accusing Agarwal of cheating and breach of trust. A month ago, hoteliers too had begun boycotting Oyo, but the Delhi High Court had ruled the case in the company’s favour. To tackle these issues, Zomato reportedly held several meetings with the NRAI. It also backtracked by cutting off discounts from its Zomato Gold programme. It has also put its recently launched Infinity Dining programme on a ‘pause’ mode. Oyo, on the other hand, has refuted all claims against its founder and has been unfazed through its expansion journey globally. The branding has taken a hit Startups and their success is important not just because of their disruptive nature, but their popularity has made them almost invincible with a ‘can-do’ attitude. These issues have come to prove that it is not the case. And, it has started to show. This is evident in its survey rankings. YouGov measures a brand by the buzz it generates in two weeks. Zomato’s Buzz fell by 6.8 points, from 42.7 in the beginning of July, to 35.9 in August end. “Zomato’s Brand Index score which is an average of quality, value, impression, reputation, satisfaction and recommend scores, has also fallen from 38.5 on 31st July to 34.9 on 31st August 2019, the time period marked by the two controversies,” said YouGov. This is a big blow for Zomato which is known for its witty, quirky marketing campaigns on and off-line that has caught the fancy of millennials. The company however said that its own internal tracking system shows no significant dip in perception in the last 3 months. "On the contrary, metrics such as trust, brand love, innovation, etc. have shown consistent upswing. In fact, we have noted a spike in the user engagement with an increase in average time spent on the app, session counts, weekly downloads, etc. These results from continuous monitoring have reaffirmed our current approach towards consumer engagement and product innovation,” said a Zomato spokesperson. Brand expert Harish Bijoor believes that Zomato and Oyo both need to be worried. “We live in the era of nano-second social media hurt. Every social media comment that is hurtful to the brand is a scar. Too many scars, and the brand can get into a negative tizzy. Brands need to be careful, and more importantly quick in their reactions to issues. Both Zomato and Oyo have been through this. As of now, the brand image has not been hurt. it has been jolted, but not damaged,” said Bijoor.
