It didn't.</h2><p>Jupiter's equatorial band has stayed stubbornly orange, even though scientists expected this year's portrait to show it fading to its typical beige hue.</p><p>That band has turned orange-red in the past. In those instances, the color change came with bright infrared light as deep clouds cleared away. This time, that didn't happen, because new red layer was much shallower.</p><p>Mike Wong, a planetary scientist at University of California, Berkeley, thought the red layer would be weak and fading by now. It's about as big as Earth and travels <a href="https://hubblesite.org/contents/media/images/2006/19/1910-Image.html?news=true">eastward, in the opposite direction</a> that the Great Red Spot moves.</p><p>"Solar ultraviolet light can cause a chemical change to some of this material that causes red spots, such as the Great Red Spot and the Red Spot Jr," Wibisono said.</p><div type="image" title="noir lab jupiter hubble" height="1304" width="2160" msid="87874631" hostid="261"></div><p>When it first formed, Red Spot Jr. was called Oval BA — that is, until it turned red in 2006, prompting scientists to liken it to the Great Red Spot. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-new-space-telescope-built-2016-11?r=US&amp;IR=T">James Webb Space Telescope</a> features a 21.3-foot-wide, gold-plated mirror and a substantially larger field of view than its predecessor, which will allow it to <a href="https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/content/about/comparisonWebbVsHubble.html">peer farther into the universe</a>. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captures photos of dark red storms raging in Jupiter's Northern hemisphere

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two telescopes have captured stunning images of <keyword id="34757" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jupiter">Jupiter</keyword> in regular, infrared, and ultraviolet light.</li><li>The images can help astronomers study storms and hot spots in the planet's atmosphere.</li><li>Infrared imaging revealed that Jupiter's shrinking Great Red Spot is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/images-of-jupiter-reveal-holes-in-great-red-spot-2020-5">riddled with holes</a>.</li></ul><p>Jupiter looks good in all kinds of light.</p><p>A set of images <a href="https://noirlab.edu/public/news/noirlab2116/">released Tuesday</a> show the planet in infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light. The combination reveals Jupiter's characteristic Great Red Spot - a cyclonic storm large enough to engulf the Earth - in stunning detail. Also visible in the <keyword id="6359897" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Photos">photos</keyword> is the Great Red Spot's smaller counterpart, aptly nicknamed Red Spot Jr. That storm, whose scientific name is Oval BA, appears to the bottom right of the Great Red Spot in the visible-light and ultraviolet images.</p><p>Astronomers were able to photograph Jupiter's atmosphere in these different wavelengths of light by using both a camera on NASA's <keyword id="145693" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hubble-Space-Telescope">Hubble Space Telescope</keyword> and an infrared imager on the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. The images were first captured on January 11, 2017. </p><p>Such photos can help researchers glean new insight into the super-storms, hot spots, and cyclones that define the gas giant's stormy atmosphere.</p><h2>The Great Red Spot is riddled with holes</h2><div type="image" title="noirlab jupiter hubble" height="1304" width="1400" msid="82558499" hostid="261"></div><p>The infrared image of Jupiter shows that the cloud cover of the Great Red Spot is full of holes. Through these gaps, heat from the planet's surface is leaking into the atmosphere.</p><p>In visible light, the holes look like swaths of different, darker clouds, but the infrared image confirmed that there aren't any clouds in those darker patches. They're just gaps in the giant storm.</p><p>"It's kind of like a jack-o-lantern," Michael Wong, a planetary scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, <a href="https://hubblesite.org/contents/news-releases/2020/news-2020-21?news=true#section-id-2">said last year</a>.</p><p>Wong helped produce the new infrared image of Jupiter. He thinks the Great Red Spot's mottled visage could be explained by swirling wind currents.</p><p>"The closest analog is eddies in the ocean," he said <a href="https://noirlab.edu/public/blog/jupiter-storms/">in a release</a>. "As the storm clouds spin, you can get little anomalies from these eddies that form streaks by just winding up."</p><div type="image" title="noir lab jupiter hubble" height="1304" width="1400" msid="82558501" hostid="261"></div><p>To create the infrared images, Wong's team used a technique called "lucky imaging." That's when a ground telescope takes many short-exposure images of the same spot, and researchers then select the sharpest ones (which are generally taken in moments when Earth's atmosphere was creating little interference). By stitching together these images of each region, the researchers crafted a portrait of the entire planet.</p><p>Keeping tabs on Jupiter's Great Red Spot using different types of imaging may help solve the mystery of its shrinking. In the 1800s, the Great Red Spot was almost 25,000 miles across. Since then it's shrunk by 60% - <a href="https://noirlab.edu/public/blog/jupiter-storms/">according to Wong's team</a>, the spot is currently only 10,000 miles wide.</p><h2 dir="ltr">A view of Red Spot Jr. </h2><div type="image" title="noir lab jupiter hubble" height="1304" width="1400" msid="82558502" hostid="261"></div><p dir="ltr">Jupiter's Red Spot Jr. formed in 2000, when three storms merged together. Although the region appears red in the visible-light image, that's not always the case - when the spot first formed, it was white. Then it turned red several years later, and in the four years since Hubble took the newly released images, the red spot has changed back to white again.</p><p dir="ltr">Although Red Spot Jr. isn't visible in the infrared-light view of Jupiter, four large <a href="https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/jupiter/atmosphere?show=hs_jupiter_atmosphere_story_hot-spots">hot spots</a> near Jupiter's equator do appear in the image. Like in the Great Red Spot, these bright patches are regions where heat from the planet below oozes into the atmosphere. </p><div type="image" title="noirlab jupiter" height="1304" width="1400" msid="82558505" hostid="261"></div><p>Another feature visible in the infrared image is a bright streak atop a darker patch in the planet's northern hemisphere. </p><p>This band is likely a giant cyclone, or series of cyclones, nearly 45,000 miles wide.</p><div type="image" title="noir lab jupiter hubble" height="1304" width="2160" msid="82558507" hostid="261"></div><p>At visible wavelengths, the cyclones appears dark brown, so this type of feature is known as a "brown barge."</p><p><em>Morgan McFall-Johnsen contributed to this story.</em></p>

Epic dust storms raging for months on end. And giant hurricanes that could swallow Earth whole. If you think Earth has some bad weather, think again.</p><p>Now Mercury has little to no atmosphere, and therefore, no real weather to speak of. But you would feel the full brunt from the most powerful storms in our solar system called coronal mass ejections. These explosive storms form on the Sun and bathe Mercury's surface in high-energy radiation. So if the lack of oxygen and extreme temperatures don't kill you, the radiation certainly will.</p><p>This isn't as much of a problem on Venus, however. After all, the entire planet is covered with clouds. Bad news is, they're toxic. These clouds rain sulfuric acid that's so corrosive it would eat through your skin on contact.</p><p>On Mars the surface is rocky and desert-like. So wind can stir up loose soil, creating giant dust devils twice the height of Mt. Everest. But that's nothing compared to the dust storms that sometimes engulf the entire planet for months at a time.</p><p>And the weather on Jupiter isn't any better. Of course, there's the Great Red Spot. A hurricane-like storm that's been raging for at least 300 years. But there's another storm on Jupiter that's equally powerful. With wind speeds twice as fast as a Category 5 hurricane. Its name is Oval BA. But is commonly called the Little Red Spot. Despite being about the size of Earth. And it's been growing in size since astronomers discovered it in 2000.</p><p>Next door, is a weather phenomenon that's even larger: Saturn's north pole harbors a giant jetstream called "The Hexagon." Each of its six distinct sides are larger than Earth itself! And at its center is a massive, rotating cloud system. That's 50 times larger than the average eye of a hurricane on Earth.</p><p>Moving right along. Next up: Uranus. If you look at its tilt, you'll notice that Uranus spins on its side! Which makes its seasons more extreme than anywhere else in the solar system. For example, winter time has no sunlight. And because Uranus is so far from the sun, winter lasts the equivalent of 21 Earth years. That's 21 years with temperatures that can reach as low as -216 degrees Celsius.</p><p>Last but not least is Neptune. You'll want to pack a windbreaker for this visit. Nicknamed "the windiest planet," Neptune's strongest winds can exceed 1,930 kilometers per hour. That's one and a half times the speed of sound on Earth. And fast enough to fly from NY to LA in just 2.3 hours.</p><p>So maybe the acid rain, towering dust devils, and super-fast winds make our planet's weather look a little nicer- not too hot, not too cold, not too windy. Just right.</p>
